The UFC's decision to stream wrestling matches, regardless of quality or quantity, is a significant step forward for the sport. This initiative exposes college wrestling to a new audience already captivated by combat sports. The UFC's approach of turning dual meets into events is also commendable, as the varied settings add an extra layer of excitement and attraction to college wrestling. Additionally, the inclusion of less discussed teams in these dual meets provides them with valuable exposure, which bodes well for the future growth of Division I wrestling.3 points

Ok i finally decided to waste 17 minutes of my life ... WHY ... WHY? First thought was felt like I might be watching a SNL skit. Second I was wondering WHY WHY WHY aren't people asking the right questions. The first should be if there's an epidemic of sports betting in college then WHY WHY is one of the lead rule breakers a head & top assistant coaches' nephew & son. Reporters should be asking the head & asst coach WHY WHY did he do it and how can we expect to clean up this epidemic if two of the top coaches in the country can't even keep their son/nephew from gambling on his own school. WHY!!??2 points

103..you are correct! I was actually stalling: by running the clock out, keeping my lead, not taking risks... but I WAS scoring at the same time. RT is scoring. Getting him frustrated and tired was scoring. Feeling him quit underneath me was scoring. Scoring to me didn't necessarily mean points. It meant that I had control and an edge. That translates to his reactions being slower if/when he gets to neutral, which then makes my job easier. On top was a rest for me and a lot of work for him because of how I was using, weight, torques, leverages, and imbalances to make him fight hard to stay even and HIM not get called or stalling. Any "turn" or pinning combination requires tying up or anchoring wrists, ankles, arms, legs, waist, etc. "Stalling" is obvious. Smart stalling is not. No ref could assume that with all the action, movement, change offs, and "turn" attempts, that I was stalling...because I wasn't according to the rules. The only time it was obvious was in the last 20-30 seconds of a match, in neutral, with a very good opponent or in the closing seconds of a championship match (not all of them tho). Usually, that's when an opponent will try "desperation" techniques...which are very easy to see coming and counter. Since we had no TechFall rule, there was no point to take a risk that might not work out well for me. Get ahead, stay ahead, wrestle smart (smart stall), work the clock, get my hand raised. There's a lot more to this...I haven't even gotten into edge of the mat strategies, off the whistle strategies, scouting strategies, technique strategies, drilling strategies, etc. You also have to remember, back then we did not get to avoid top or bottom...everyone had to take top and he had to take bottom if he didn't get pinned along the way...and the matches were 8 min...long freaking time to wrestle.2 points

Not shameful at all - I think he is right there, too. IF they all stay or navigate to 184 (Arnold/Thompson) 184 is going to be batshit, man. McEnelly being left out is my bad. I mean no sleight to that young man, either. There are quite a few others that will be in there, too. Shumate (or Rogotzke), Ferrari, Whiting, Fishback, etc...2 points

Gable's flips are crazy high amplitude. Dake used to do backflips, too. But nothing like Gable. A standing backflip isn't as difficult as some may think. It's more about technique than athletic ability. The straight back and arm swing make it pretty easy. I was surprised to find that out when a HS gymnast friend showed me. So, this gymnast gal, so super-hot, she finished gymnastics practice about the same time wrestling practice finished and we bumped into each other in the hallway outside the wrestling room. We start talking about gymnastics and next thing I know we're back in the wrestling room and she's teaching me how to do a standing backflip. She's got to spot me, so she's a little handsy. I didn't complain. Success - it wasn't that difficult. I thank her, we chat a bit then call it a day. Shut the lights back off and then... we wander a bit around the dark wrestling room. Wait - what was I talking about?2 points

Before we begin the show, I just want to wish the happiest of birthdays to my man Earl Smith. Tonight’s VT-Rutgers matchup was actually supposed to be Earl Night, but he has a soccer game or something to go to. That mistake aside, I’m proud to call Virginia’s second favorite son not only my captain, but also my friend. So have a day, my man. You’ve earned it. Now let’s see if I can sneak an F Word in here somewhere. If Tom Brands ever decides to step down, who would Iowa need to go after to compete with PSU?? Who could they actually get? Dean Wrestling First off, I don’t think Tom Brands knows the words step down/retire/quit. But if there ever was to be a change, there’s no shortage of candidates of Hawkeye alumni. Spencer Lee has always been discussed as the future man in charge and I don’t disagree. But the point is moot for now because Brands is not going anywhere any time soon. Who is really #1 at 133? Madison Hollenbeck If you asked me 20 years ago I’d say Nelly. Because two is not a winner and three nobody remembers. But it’s not 20 years ago and there are no St. Lunatics here. By the time this hits the newsstands, you’ll have heard every argument about it and I’m not sure what else I can add to it except for what I’m about to say to the next question. For the record, I still think Vitali Arujau is the best wrestler at the weight until further notice. Are rankings just actually for clicks? Derek Conrad Well, I think everything is for clicks in some aspect. The point is to draw traffic to your site and sell ad space. As you can see, I have no ads because I write the dumbest column in the history of the sport. But rankings are just one person’s opinion and of course, it will vary from site to site. Flo has a formula they use and so does InterMat. WrestleStat has an algorithm that sometimes makes for some strange movement, but those guys constantly tinker to try and get it right. My advice is to take them all with a grain of salt and just as a reference tool for matching guys up. Did Flo put Crookham at number one to juice the conversation for the week and maybe get ahead of the curve if he really does end up on top at the end? Maybe they did. But that’s the business we are in. Clicks and conversation are what fuel us. Am I mentioning Ryan Crookham, right now, just so Earl can use his picture in the header? You’re damn right I am. It generates clicks. What is the appropriate date for Christmas music to start? Salty Walkon The day after Thanksgiving. Frankly, I just don’t know why businesses even do this before then. Trust me, nobody is yearning for Jingle Bells on November 17. We all want our Mariah Carey but don’t shove it down our throats. Go full bore on Black Friday and we will all accept it. I have to think of everything around here. I'm tired of it. Keys to victory for the Scarlet Knights to pull off this upset end keep the Jagger Night streak alive? Dysen Gould There are a few paths to victory here. The simplest is probably a 5/5 split with a Soldano pin to cover any bonus point losses. In that scenario, I have it 18-17 Rutgers. But even then, some of those proposed wins are still tossups that you absolutely have to win and you’re asking one of them to be via pin. Sure, Soldano is a pinner but sometimes it just doesn’t happen. I’ll say this much; the new takedown scoring may severely affect the way the wind blows in this one. If VT can pull majors in their most favorable matches then it’s likely because of the new scoring rules. On the flip side, Soldano may not get a pin but his style may lead to various seven-point moves that will be huge on the Rutgers end. 165 is the pivotal match in this one. VT should be the favorite on paper, but Tony White is no joke. A win here in the home opener against a team like this could be just the thing Tony needs to get to that next level. The whole dual is just fascinating and could be on the shortlist of best duals of the year when the season comes to an end. Or it could suck. Jags, back in 2004, I witnessed a guy smoking between matches at the Scranton Open. Was this you or someone you know? Richard Mann I wish. Coincidentally, I was living in Northeast PA about 45 minutes from Scranton in 2004, but I was tending bar rather than huffing Bogeys at open tournaments. That was also a miserable time in my life and I will speak no further of it. I wasted so much time of my life serving old men beer in one-dollar pilsner glasses during the day shift. Just miserable.1 point

hmmm...where to start. I just love how people always blame others for their station in life, or wrestling. If I get broken down, it's the guy on top who is stalling. If he spirals me, he's stalling. If he throws legs, he's stalling. If he hooks my ankle, he's stalling. If he catches my ankle, he's stalling. Watch the NCAA's and notice how many "good" wrestlers break down to an elbow and then their wrists get tied up, or get their arm chopped, or flatten out and have no clue how prevent or counter. Not the top guys fault. Here was the moment in my career that one sentence changed my entire outlook and career. Back in the day, college coaches could actually come to a recruits h.s. and practice with him. It was my senior year and Fred Powell from Slippery Rock came to Maple Hts. to roll around with me. Fred was an NCAA Champion. I actually got the better of him when we went takedowns. Then we went top and bottom. He got on top and put a figure 4 around my waist. It was legal back then and he literally beat the shit out of me (making it clear that he was pissed about the TD's). When we finished with "Escapes," I sauntered over to my dad (my coach) and asked, "How do I get out of that?" His response, "Don't get into it you jackass!" Epiphany! The reason you can't get out of a situation is because you haven't been trained to: 1) prevent it and: 2) to counter it or: 3) neutralize it. Same with legs, same with spiral, same with cradles, same with singles, doubles, fireman, headlocks, etc. There are "setups" and symptoms to everything that is going to happen. Setups to TD's, breakdowns, escapes, legs, and turns. With very few exceptions, if prevention fails, there are counters to everything that happens to you. Just because you can't turn someone doesn't mean you are stalling. I'm gaining RT, clock's running down, he's getting tired fighting all the torques, leverages, and imbalances. Part of my objective on top was to wear him down and frustrate him, and get in his head because he knows he can't get away unless I let him. I kept the ref happy (you read that correctly) by constantly changing off and working him much like a gymnast works a pommel horse...ankles to hips to shoulders to wrists back to hips to ankles and repeat as necessary. I would attempt the obligatory techniques that were known to be precursors to "turns" or pinning combo's but his reactions usually allowed me better positions for control. There's one thing I recognized early on in my career. Some guys spend so much time on bottom and although they can't get away, they are wise to many of the turn techniques and can counter rather well. Trust me, I scored my share of back points..we didn't have tech falls. Whether we won 2-1 or 20-1 it was still a 3pts for the team. Full disclosure, I pinned one guy in hs and one in college. I have never in my entire career (since 8th grade) ever been warned for stalling on top or bottom. Been warned and called for stalling in the final 30 seconds of a match but the calls were inconsequential to the outcome. His fault for being behind so that I could have that allowance. It's part of the strategy. Like all other strategies, stalling is a science. it was a big part of my game plan and smart wrestlers know how/when to use and disguise it. Anyway, I will still stand by the premise that if you cannot escape from bottom, regardless of what the top guy is doing, it's lack of coaching or your lack of learning. Being on bottom gives you the opportunity to score and limit top guys RT. I looked at every position as an advantage to me because I was very well coached. My goal was to get my hand raised and do within the parameters of the rules. pmilk1 point

I wouldn't doubt that. Also with his progress this year, i wouldn't be surprised to see him get drafted. Nebraska does have a great heavyweight just not on the wrestling team lol1 point

I heard on a podcast that a lot of college and freestyle wrestlers who go pro are usually pretty good about #1 and not getting injured themselves, but struggle with basic stuff like not having your back towards the camera during a move and slowing the pace of the action (not trying to do too much too quickly) so the audience can take it in and react. Not willing to put guys over makes sense too. That, and having the charisma to sell their persona which is a big challenge for all pro wrestlers. I'm not sure if the problem is Gable or the way WWE is developing pro wrestlers. Didn't Angle go through a long process learning all this stuff before making his debut on TV? Now it's more of a sink or swim model and Gable will need to figure things out quickly. Seems like a lot of WWE fans are hating on Gable. Why doesn't he lean into that and go full heel, make them really despise him? That would give him immediate attention and jumpstart his pro wrestling persona. Maybe he's already doing that, idk because I don't keep up with WWE.1 point

@Dark Energy asked "what about The Other Guys?" in the Big Board Big Boys thread. And he wasn't talking about Allen "Gator" Gamble and Terry "The Yankee Clipper" Hoitz. He was talking about the teams that do well recruiting outside of The Big Board Top 20. But before we get into that, a shout out to The Brain, @Husker_Du, for setting me up with a better, more complete, and higher quality, consistent data set for The BB. He was kind enough to fill in the blanks for me and replace the years Flo attempted to replicate his Brain, with his actual Brain. So now there are little bits of Willie all over these rankings. Read on if you dare. Breaking down The Big Board into groups of 20 and merging it with the AA data we get the following Kings of the Quintiles below the first quintile. Northwestern and Missouri have done the best mining the wrestlers ranked 21 - 100 (plus and honorable mention) with 14 AA's from those ranks over the past 10 recruiting classes (2013 - 2022). However, it has been a struggle to keep these guys, as Eierman, Rivera and Micic all transferred. The other teams with double digit AA success are Virginia Tech and NC State. As expected there are not a huge number of NCAA winners from these quintiles, but there aren't none. The deed has been done five times. Nino Bonaccorsi at #30, Max Dean at #74 and Ryan Deakin at #97 we know about. But there was also Darian Cruz (#37), and Seth Gross (#47).1 point
