  1. I actually was wrong. She was "reluctant to take the PK" because of a scoring drought. I think it is possible that she moved up from the 5th spot to the 4th, to alleviate pressure on herself. My apologies to Mrs. Garciaparra-Hamm and her fans, as well as to the members of this board.

  3. This sport is proud to be poor. Weird because just like hockey, the best are anything but. Reminds me a lot of my tiny rural hometown where dreams go to die. Except those of us who left and excelled. There is nothing wrong with having increasingly higher expectations once a foothold has been established. There is a problem with mediocrity and accepting mediocrity as not only a baseline, but an acceptable norm. For example, if I got 6th in state would I be happy doing that year in and year out? Because Flo is consistently an underachieving state placer when it should be competing for Fargo titles with dreams to compete for world titles. Sure, it gets the tournaments (beating the state champ during the season) but it can't actually broadcast for crap (dropping a match in the second round) and then expects the customers to just take it (dropping another match in the consi semis). FloWrestling is Marinelli incarnate.

  4. Looks like Flo is telling people to "reach out about your account" for any possibiluty of a refund. Now, you can have the added frustration of trying to chase after refunds after experiencing outages. Everyone feel better?

  5. You all flunk the class for failure to turn in your homework on time. It was bugging me to see if TF were down because MD were up at the 2023 tournament. Nope. They were actually a little below average last year too. In tabular form: In graphical form: Not much to say here other than the last two years were nothing like the prior five. Now, if PSU breaks Iowa's total points scored record because of incremental bonus earned through incremental takedown points, is it tainted?

  8. Evolve or die. Life was better after the invention of the horse and buggy than it was before. People weren't loyal to it when a better product came along. Right now, Flo has the broadcast rights that keep their subscribers from cancelling despite poor service (by 2023 standards, not pre 2000 standards). The market will eventually correct itself if that continues. Whether its ESPN+, Twitch or some other service.

  9. ugh... schultz is looking better domestically... not sure if beating this version of coon means anything, but, he did it... the army guys all looked "better"... i had thought Ildar looked tired going into the Final X and was very surprised he ended up on the team... he rips my heart out every time internationally... i feel like he has had all the skill necessary to medal, but, seems like he freezes up a bit on the big stage... but i am always rooting for him... bey was on suspension for awhile... on the army team and looks more focused than he has ever been... no better athlete in the sport, so, if the army has him more centered he is always a threat in any match with his athleticism... hopefully sancho learned a much needed lesson letting a 17 year old kid toss him on his head and losing his shit afterwards... he is scrappy... xavier is a wild card... was out of competition for a minute and injured in vegas... i did not expect him to make the team but he did the damn thing... the rest i fear will be there mostly for the experience...

  11. Aight, what tournaments used to be covered well but have since totally disappeared. 1) Russian Nationals 2) All Zeb Miller Productions 3) They did a great job at prep nationals and nj states a while back Now that I think about it, I wish Flo would stick to their documentaries, bc those things are tremendous. They should hand the broadcasting to a new team. Even though I dislike much of their product, their ability to tell a story artfully with unsung corners of the sport really is tremendous.

  12. The problem lies in FloSports’ “arrogance”, so to speak, that they do not need to improve because the customer doesn’t have a better choice. The wrestling community is its own worst enemy when it comes to being complacent with the status quo (mediocrity). I don’t think customer complaints made to Flo make any difference. It needs to be more of a consumer advocacy campaign directed to USAW and UWW. An open letter/petition calling on USAW and UWW to demand excellence from Flo when broadcasting their events and hold Flo accountable when they do not uphold those standards. This is likely how they lost the MLS contracts. Outside of that, it’d take a coordinated boycott, which would be a tough nut to crack. This isn’t like the ignorance of Bud Light calling its customer base cavemen fratboys and mocking women, since there is a plethora of other (better) beers out there… we don’t have the privilege of having many options for consuming wrestling content.

  13. That doesn't sound like me.... But, as long as I have you here. My guess is that we will see a good sized jump in the regular season where there are some big skill mismatches that will make catch and release a viable strategy. But in the NCAA tournament we are unlikely to see that kind of talent disparity. For example, the TF without back points is the rarest of all animals. Going back to 2015 where they list whether something is a tech fall or major there have been 169 tech falls listed in the brackets and each and every one of them is listed as TF-1.5 (i.e. there were back points). Instead we look at majors that were near tech falls to guess which may have been bumped to tech falls with the addition of an extra take down point. In the 2023 tournament there were 88 major decisions. The breakdown was: 8 point major: 29 (33%) 9 point major: 24 (27%) 10 point major: 16 (18%) 11 point major: 5 (6%) 12 point major: 9 (10%) 13 point major: 5 (6%) 14 point major: 0 (0%) My guess is that very few to none of the 8 and 9 point majors become tech falls with the extra point. For example, lets say the score was 8-0 with 3 take downs, an escape and a riding time point. In the absence of more takedowns the new score would be 11-0. Of course, there is now a greater incentive to ride less and take down more, but I still think almost all 8 and 9 point majors would stay majors. That leaves us the 10 - 14 point majors. All 14 point majors would become TF, but there were none last year. And almost all 13 point majors become TFs (lets say all). But the probability decreases as the difference decreases. If 67% of 12 pointers, 60% of 11 pointers and 50% of 10 pointers become 15+ pointers then last year we would be looking at an extra 22 tech falls. Is 22 extra tech falls a lot? Damn straight it is. From 2015 to 2022 there were an average 23 tech falls. so, yes, a near 100% increase would be a lot. Note: There is one huge caveat. I only looked at major decisions in 2023. And the more careful reader may notice that 2023 was not included in my range in the paragraph above. If you want some free beer at the next NCAA tournament ask someone in a bar to set a line for the number of tech falls in the 2023 tournament, and you will pick over or under. You should almost certainly pick the under. There was a stunningly small number of tech falls last year which may also mean there were an abnormally large number of majors. I do not know because I did not check the number of majors any other year. Perhaps that could be your homework assignment. Think of it as extra credit. Tech Falls by Year: 2015 12 2016 25 2017 33 2018 28 2019 22 2021 28 2022 12 2023 9

  15. I've heard it said that sports are 90% mental and 10% physical. That is wrong and stupid. If that were the case, Stephen Hawking would have teched Jordan Burroughs at the 2012 Olympics instead of spending the afternoon in his London flat working out fiendishly difficult equations. The famous soccer player Mia Hamm said that the most important attribute a player must have is "mental toughness." Of course, soccer players with mental toughness also writhe around on the ground after another player touches them. They're running a 10k with a ball! Soccer players should not speak unless spoken to, in my opinion. But what about physical capabilities? It has been said that in sports, there are four physical traits an athlete must use: Strength, speed, conditioning, and positioning. Yet, the race doesn't always go to the swiftest, and the fight doesn't always go to the strongest. No. There must be something else. I've spent twelve years researching the relationship between athletic celebrations and success in sports. It is nearly a 100% correlation. I'm ready to call it causation. Whenever there is an athlete or athletes celebrating, a victory has been won. Examples: I think coaches have got it all backwards. First, teach your athlete a capital celebration, like Kamal Bey's Back Flip Superman or Zane Richards' Lezginka dance, and then they cannot fail. Statistics show this to be true. After that, maybe work with them on their pummeling or high crotch a little. With a superior celebration in their back pocket, your athlete will train harder. Because you only get to celebrate if you win. ___________________ This post first appeared at The ILLINI Wrestling Blog and Forum and Beyond.

  16. Fujinami just beat Shidochi by pin. The score was 7-2 at the time of the pin. Fujinami got a single to make it 2-0. Funjinami shot and got in on a leg, went for a turn, but Shidochi used momentum and turned Fujinami to make it 2-2, but Fujinami regained control, 3-2. After the break, Fujinami got in on another single to make it 5-2, then was going for a lace, but stood up and walked over shidochi to try and get a pin. Shidochi was bridging for a really long time, but Fujinami was just too good and finally secured the pin. Both looked amazingly sharp, but Fujinami was just faster and just a little sharper. Amazing.

Safe to say everyone would be under 100 wins. 21. Which year was the Iowa/OSU debacle? 2023 at Iowa BTN televised 2022 Bout at the Ballpark Flo streams - I only recall minor issues 2021 No Dual - COVID conference only schedule 2020 At Iowa BTN televised 2019 This was a massive dual. Both entered undefeated ranked 2 and 3 behind an undefeated PSU. It was the last dual of the season for both teams and was won by OSU. Picc pinned Spencer Lee. I recall minor issues watching this but not a total meltdown. Was this the year? 2018 At Iowa BTN televised. 2017 This was a pretty massive dual too. OSU was ranked #1 and Iowa #3. I don't recall watching this one. If I did I am sure there were issues with the stream freezing that caused me to reload and such. 2016 Grapple on the Gridiron. This was actually the first dual of the season and was actually wrestled Now 2015. It was at Iowa and on BTN.The total meltdown I remember was the 2017 Season Finale between OSU and PSU at Gallagher-Iba. 2015?

  23. That’s what a guy who drives a Honda Fit but dreams of one day of owning a Smart car would say. Not an exact parallel, but the point is the same. Like I said, we are our own worst enemy in wrestling, being satisfied with mediocrity. It is ok to want more, to want better, to not be grateful just for being allowed to exist.

  24. It'll be interesting to see how the 3TD affects scrambling and whether it results in more or less stalemates. Will it motivate guys to take risks and scramble through to a takedown, or will it be more hanging onto legs and waiting for a restart to not give up 3?

  25. What's the evidence that there is this issue at these schools? Out of curiosity, I checked Flo's class of 2023 recruitment list for top 100 recruits: Brown: 2 Columbia: 0 Cornell: 4 Harvard: 1 Penn: 1 Princeton: 5 Stanford: 4 Something less than 10% of the D1 schools with 17% of the top 100 recruits. 2024 Cornell: 3 Penn: 2 Princeton: 2 Stanford: a whopping 7

  26. Even though they were not yet fixed at 33 wrestlers per weight, it looks like 2008 had only 2 more matches than 2023. And it looks like 2009 is when they went to 33 man brackets. Though there was one 32 man bracket that year.

  27. The 4 point NF rule was enacted for the 2015-2016 season and it looks like there is a clear increase in bonus points following that. 2016 there were more bonus point victories than in the previous 8 season and over the next 5 years bonus point wins were even higher. Every year 2016-2021 was higher than the highest year 2008-2015. The last two years seem to be real outliers. They had the fewest bonus point victories of the 15 in the table. Maybe this is a COVID effect. You have wrestlers sticking around for extra years starting in 2022, but the same number of qualifiers. The guys that stuck around are generally better than average wrestlers which probably pulled up the ability of the average wrestler at the national tournament. So the 33rd best wrestling in the field in 2022 and 2023 are likely better than the 33rd best wrestler in field in 2012. This could possibly make for more competitive matches than we had been used to seeing. What year did they change to at large selections and using in-season results to select qualifiers?

  31. As customers, we have invested in the company. When one invests in something, it is reasonable for them to expect growth and returns. Say you bought a new car and the engine blew up after 1000 miles. You go back to the dealer, and he says, "Tough shit. If you think you can make a better car, maybe you should buy a factory, hire engineers and build your own car." Would you just say, "Yeah, you're right. I couldn't do it. I guess I'll just buy another car from you that'll blow up after 1000 miles."?

  32. I can't think of a time when I saw a wrestler at NCAAs trying a catch and release strategy to try and chase down a TF/MD. I think this is almost exclusively a feature of dual meets where a bonus point is more significant in deciding the outcome and the team goal is at the forefront. I would suspect you'd see it more there. At NCAAs I would think there would be a bigger effect on MD numbers than FTs. A three point match is now almost on a knife edge between OT and a MD. 2023 was the least competitive team race in the range of years in your table. I'd expect a tight team race to increase the importance of bonus points and turn some of those MDs into FTs. I added a column to your table with margin of victory in the team race. There is a weak correlation

  38. This will probably save athletic departments, because they were looking to be in a world of hurt due to NLI/collectives. If people could write-off donations to collectives, my guess, within five years, the only donations they’d be getting would be the mandatory donations by season ticket holders and people wanting their names on buildings. This will give athletic departments a leg up on getting more big donations from rich people who don’t like paying taxes on money they give away. Collectives will rely on smaller donations, since most of us peasants just do our taxes on TurboTax and take the standard deduction, anyhow.

I feel pretty solid that Stanford will be hard to pass up for them. Robideau already committed to Minny. Him and Perry (to PSU) are the only commits for 2025 so far (unless you count the very likely to OKST for Lockett).

  42. Zane Richards is now 3-0 against last year's Silver and Bronze World Championship medalists. The combined match points were 22-9 in his favor. There appeared to be no problem with the cut at Final X. He beat the Iranian at the World Cup. No weight/gas issues there. Zane's in a very good place right now. The Albanian (former Russian) World Champion will be a problem, but he is almost a genetic duplicate of Richards. He could be Zane's older, uglier, slightly thicker-legged brother. So excite!

  44. Some had years to figure out how to be competitive and beat the number one guy. That was their goal. You don't have years to figure out the field at The World Tourney. The guys that won deserve their chance, but I believe some lack of experience may thwart them along the way. I don't think Zane, Lee, Valencia/Macc or Marstellar are the answer but they did their job and I'll be happy to be proven wrong.
