I really enjoyed the Max Dean exciting last regular season match era.5 points

For the final edition of this post, prior to the final edition of this post, I thought I would take a look at the full season. Using Intermat's rankings from today to determine the current top 10 teams I traced their expected points back through time to the pre-season rankings. The gap at the top has grown significantly as the PSU freshmen first entered the rankings and then began to climb the rankings, growing from an expected lead over Iowa of 16.8 points to the current gap of 30.9 points. Meanwhile, the expected gap between #2 and #3 has shrunk from 14.8 to 10.2 While #1 and #2 have remained fairly constant, #3 and #4 have not. Ohio State, Cornell, Michigan, and Iowa State have each had dalliances with the podium positions, but with Nebraska's meteoric rise and Missouri's relative stability these two now occupy the expected podium positions. But that occupancy is not a foregone conclusion. The race for the podium has tightened up significantly. At the beginning of the season there was a 98% difference between #4 (52.1 expected points) and #10 (26.3 expected points). That is down to a 25% difference (48.8 vs 39.1). Per usual, I am only looking at placement and advancement points based on the historical results from 2010 - 2022.3 points

Max suffered from a bout of diarrhea. Lost 17.38 pounds in the process. Day of the match Cael asked him to sit it out but being the man Dean is he decided to wrestle. This is insider information and I feel somewhat guilty for sharing this but Dean is currently in the hospital. He might die. Let us pray3 points

Stupid because there's ~50 other moves he could've picked from that work on Lee every time.3 points

Sports Illustrated -- though this version of SI is a shadow of its former self-- says Penn State might break Iowa's 170-team points record. https://www.si.com/college/pennstate/wrestling/penn-state-wrestling-nittany-lions-finish-unbeaten-regular-season-with-win-over-clarion2 points

If they wrestle out of their minds they will be lucky to get within 30 points of the record, which won't even put them in the top 10. To say SI is a shadow of its old self is among the understatements of the year.2 points

Let's just hope that he survives in the hospital and makes it to NCAA's. I mean it's going to be hard for me to argue against Cinnabon when he makes his, "Why PSU won't place in the Top 10" thread and I'll be clinging to Dean's death, Brooks' loss to Pinto in the Quarters, and RBY skipping for a gaming tournament as excuses.2 points

Well, I couldn't help myself. Using Wrestlestat's RPI estimates, this spreadsheet has tabs for all of the weights and all of the people that could potentially earn a pre-allocation. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1g7fJRHTrJOg6q9Vx2ftxVYDFiJBEB3HMyic4IoGCLc0/edit?usp=sharing Explanation of format: The first two columns - name and conference are self-explanatory. The third column lists the wrestlers winning percentage* and the fourth notes any wrestler who has a top 30 RPI or a winning percentage of .700 or better but was not in the top 30 of the last CR. A caveat that there is a max of 29 pre-allocated spots and one has to go to EWL/MAC/Pac12/SoCon even if they don't have someone who meets the criteria, so there are more wrestlers who have 2 of 3 criteria than there are pre-allocated spots and this is before the last CR anyway, so the guys at the back of the top 30 who had a rough week or two may find themselves replaced. I also included some guys from weaker conferences who have a .700 winning percentage that technically need CR but don't have nearly a good enough RPI for the coaches to add them to the top 30 now, if they hadn't done it already, so no need to tell me that Palumbo or Stoltzfus are longshots. That said, Here are the splits by weight, pending the new CR: 125: ACC 3, B10 9, B12 6, EIWA 4, EWL 1, MAC 2, Pac12 3, SoCon 2 133: ACC 3, B10 9, B12 6, EIWA 7, EWL 1, MAC 1, Pac12 3, SoCon 2 141: ACC 4, B10 10, B12 7, EIWA 5, EWL 2, MAC 1, Pac12 1, SoCon 1 149: ACC 5, B10 9, B12 7, EIWA 3, EWL 2, MAC 2, Pac12 2, SoCon 1 157: ACC 3, B10 11, B12 8, EIWA 3, EWL 2, MAC 2, Pac12 1, SoCon 1 165: ACC 5, B10 10, B12 7, EIWA 4, EWL 1, MAC 1, Pac12 2, SoCon 2 174: ACC 3, B10 7, B12 7, EIWA 5, EWL 3, MAC 2, Pac12 2, SoCon 2 184: ACC 6, B10 9, B12 6, EIWA 5, EWL 1, MAC 1, Pac12 1, SoCon 1 197: ACC 5, B10 9, B12 7, EIWA 6, EWL 1, MAC 1, Pac12 3, SoCon 1 285: ACC 4, B10 9, B12 8, EIWA 5, EWL 1, MAC 1, Pac12 1, SoCon 1 Feel free to comment here or on the spreadsheet if you think I made any mistakes (and I probably did). * Also using Wrestlestat's calculations for win%, which can be off for these purposes if a wrestler moved up or down in weight. Looking at Patrick Glory's profile, they give the all-D1 winning % even though a handful of matches were at 133, so, grain of salt - especially for the guys right around .700.2 points

I was thinking back on this topic from other forums, but nevertheless intrigued if others think of schools having wrestling as a Varsity sport would be sick. I would love to see Western Oregon University (D2) bring back wrestling. I think it would be very benefical and bring enthusiasm to the wrestling scene even more with Oregon State, Linfield (D3, revived this current wrestling season) and other NAIA schools that brought wrestling to the local region of the Pacific Northwest and beyond of having more opportunities as of late. There is some hard nosed talent over on that side of the nation that can really benefit saying close to home. Especially back to Western Oregon. The program was shut down due to Measure 5 of property taxes and ultimately because of it, the program was cut with 65 seasons of program history in 1991 with a few of those wrestlers actually making the national champions at that season. Hopefully the "Mat Men" come back sooner then later. Here a link of there history for those interested. Link: https://wou.edu/westernhowl/the-history-of-westerns-wrestling-program/1 point

5th place is worth 2 more points today than in 97, 6th place is worth 3 more points, giving PSU 5 more placement points given your assumptions. The only other difference is that Iowa had a single match termination which was worth 1 point. Today it would be worth 1.5 points.1 point

I'm liking how Ventresca is wrestling lately after going through a mid season slump. It'll be more clear after ACCs, but I'm picking him to win there and then make some noise at NCAAs.1 point

That nothing but predator prosecution. That is weaponized government. He is a threat to the left. When he exposed the sales of aborted baby body parts and they went after him instead of the sick MFers selling chunks of babies. All his work speaks for itself and the old trick of trying to discredit the source only works on simple minded people. He's attacked for being right.1 point

I don't know how you can disrespect him. His shit is real, and he exposes people with their own words. That's odd school investigative journalism. You may not like the fact that he exposes people on your side, but if nobody broke the law we wouldn't need police.1 point

Lived there from age 24 through age 30 on an extended work assignment. I had some flatmates in Kings Cross who were from Liverpool and introduced me to the scouse accent as well as the dish (a bit of an everything stew). One thing UK is completely ignorant to in my experience is wrestling. I joined an MMA gym while very out of shape and managed to do very well against those slobs.1 point

Just vacations and work trips. But I am a big Liverpool fan. So if you hear me saying things like he gave him a Scouse kiss, it's twitchy bum time, he ate all the pies, he hit a purple patch, or they are at sixes and sevens, you will know where it came from.1 point

If they indeed do break the record, the Hawkeye report room will explode. There was already a topic where they discussed taking second to Penn St, which they figured, but absolutely don’t want them to break the most points scored record.1 point

This is who earned the Conference Allocations per weight class: (Again this is using wrestlestat RPI rankings which are a tad different). Also, If they are in Red means they did not meet qualification standards. If a wrestler was not previously ranked in Coaches rankings cause of match amount and have since met the minimum amount of matches. I gave them the ranked they are placed in national rankings. (ie Rocky Elam has now met minimum match threshold and I have him down at #4) - Ventresca would have RPI but hasn't wrestled. Flynn would have both RPI and WIN % So if they are entered possibly ACC gains a qualifier and the MAC loses one. * As of now Henry Porter of Indiana doesn't meet the requirements. But after beating Brayden Palmer he will move up in the coaches rankings to give them an AQ. * This weight had a few others that could be considered and actually met criteria (Petite of Buffalo needs to be included in the Coaches rankings.) Alex Hornfeck of West Virginia and Andrew Clark of Rutgers - Nelson Brands didn't meet the criteria He is 6-4 which doesn't qualify him for RPI and his win % is below 70%, So he would have to finish 7th or higher to qualify for nationals. Because, if he finishes lower than 7th his coaches ranking will probably drop (it is currently 20) - Coaches Ranked Bernie Truax 33rd last rankings... I think logic will take over and he will be ranked higher this rankings. So I made the adjustment1 point

With a 2005 WC gold and a 2008 Oly gold, is there any question that Bouvaisar could not have added two more WC gold if he wanted to? I don't think there is a good argument for that. I think he got tired of it all but wanted that Oly gold in 2008. I think there might be an argument if Saitiev was not in the discussion for GOAT. mspart1 point

Tbh I dont think it will happen, more like a "rooting for the underdog" pick. As for reasons to entertain: I think Vito is the only wrestler with the athleticism and skill set necessary to challenge the top two. But, put a gun to my head (or knee) and I'd pick RBY1 point

Yeah, being from New Jersey I took an interest in fellow Jerseyans Larry Sciacchatano, Ricky Dellagatta, Clarence Richardson, etc., going down south. The SEC had multiple AA's 8 times in 11 years from 1975 thru 1985. They also had 4 different teams (Kentucky, Auburn, LSU & Tennessee) place in top 10 scoring. So while saying that "the SEC used to have some tough wrestling" may be giving the conference a little too much cred - "more of a myth than reality" may be a little bit harsh.1 point

I’ll throw Lachlan McNeil’s name in at 141. He wrestles a high pace, is solid on his feet, and has some nice wins this year. UNC guys also generally overperform their seed at the NCAA tournament. I think Lachlan is pretty likely to at least make the blood round and depending on his matchup can win there to AA as a redshirt freshman.1 point

Saitiev was OLY gold from 1996 through 2008. He did not medal in 2000 as we all know. He won 6 WCs. His last WC was 2005 and he came back for 2008 to win gold. He is the best there was. His brother Adam was also very good but had the misfortune to be younger than Bouvi. But he won 2 WC and 1 OLY gold. Sadulaev has 5 WC and 2 OLY golds. So he is close to Saitiev. But I think Bouvaisar was a better freestyler. He is hands down considered the best there's ever been. mspart1 point

I was trying to emphasize and add on to your point. My bad if it came across differently.1 point

Glory could have struggles with weight management and injury recovery - any word from Princeton? Do not think Yianni or Vito are too worried, but the Penn #2 seeds are capable and will have a strategy on home mats. Beard might be the least worried #1 seed. O'Malley has a really tough path at EIWA's w this seeding. Conigliaro in quarters, Foca in the semis, and if he makes the finals could be Incontrera or Pasiuk. All of these guys have a shot at round of 12 and would expect at least a few AA's. A lot of parity at 141 and expect it to be a wild bracket. Hines is dangerous - suprising the number of losses he has. Have not seen Griess at 285, but 30 wins is impressive. I wonder if Goldin has a shot at the #3 seed at 285 and wonder if he even wants it? 165 - #2 seed may be right, but I am not betting against Monday.1 point

Again for the people in the back. Title IX was the excuse not the reason. UTC doesn’t have Baseball or Men’s Soccer but has wrestling. Other schools wrestling teams/coaches made doing it the other way … way too easy with grades, behavior and the coaches doing the “anti politics” wrestling coaches take weird pride in. We also never really pushed to get our guys in Admin. beyond just coaching. Im well aware of what happened to Norte Dame and ODU. There were still dozens of schools where the wrestling team made it pretty easy to pick which team to cut1 point

Well ... sure ... that may be the problem. Did they ever complete the bridge/road to nowhere and who could find RI even if they were looking? Although, Russia is big into wrestling and its my understand you can see Sarah Palin's back yard from Russia, so ...1 point

The obvious schools are USC and UCLA. They should not be allowed to join the Big Ten unless they can field varsity wrestling teams. Overall, I think the trend of schools bringing back wrestling will continue, particularly at the lower end (d3, etc.). Seeing the increasing participation and recognition of girls wrestling is great. more colleges sponsoring women's wrestling, which will help the sport grow on the boys and men's side as well. Easier to invest in coaching and facilities when potentially double the number of athletes benefit. Also, with title ix concerns, it's good that there now exists a sport that can "balance" out wrestling (and it ends up being wrestling!). I wonder what would happen if more top schools would follow Iowa's lead and invest in the women's side. the growth for wrestling as a whole could really explode.1 point
