A couple guys have shown the path to beating Lee, you get one attempt. Yes wizzards & witches might have a slightly better chance but picc your spot it is a very very thin path.3 points

He plays a smart game. His hand-fighting is elite (because of great conditioning and those angry Brands genes). I would also argue that his reattacks are super-elite. He will shoot against popsicles, but against really good opponents, he waits until you shoot first. His reattacks are amazingly quick. So, it is the smart play for him, but it also means a lot of sweaty palms and 3-2 decisions against really good wrestlers.3 points

Nelson Brands hand fighting is elite. He will be in matches with anyone because of it. Would not be surprised to see him make an AA run.3 points

He'll be fine...has the winning percentage and will have the coaches' ranking (unless the 14 coaches that rank 149 have sudden amnesia about who he is, minimum for both of those is 8 matches).2 points

~half the schools are Ag schools. The pre-seeds are sent in to the Ag schools about a week early and go to the green house. The ones that sprout are brought to the final seeding meeting. The tallest sprout on Friday gets the top #1 seed and so on down to the shortest. This may or may not be how it works but it's as good a guess as anyone else has. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯2 points

Well, when they're on bottom they are intent on staying there for the rest of the period. Bad joke for a bad team with a fan in a bad mood.2 points

Here's a link to all the all-americans from Portland State, mostly division II, but some division I .....maybe Saunders, Yatabe and Dan Russell with the most division I finishes. There are four pages of all-americans you can navigate through here. Fadz https://nwhof.org/national-wrestling-hall-of-fame/champions-database?school=2032 points

I'm a PSU guy and outside of" my team" my favorites are Yianni and Labriola. There is bias for both. Have family that wrestled for Cornell and Labriola is from my neck of the woods. But even without those two Spencer still isn't one of my favorites. There are other wrestlers I just so happen to have a liking to. Even back in Cael's era my two favorites were Abas and Greg Jones. Doesn't mean I didn't acknowledge Cael's greatness2 points

Witcraft was not playing with fire, he was going to get pinned at some point in the match unless he pinned Lee early. Witcraft is dangerous from his feet.1 point

That is the way he coaches. I remember planting myself behind him in Reno more than 10 years ago to soak in his wisdom. He spent the match enumerating how much money he wasted paying for the guys trip. Seems mindless to me, but can't argue his success.1 point

I know they outclassed OSU in every position, but I was particularly impressed with their reattacks. I say "particularly impressed" bc it's hella difficult to reattack when your opponent doesn't shoot and just stands there and looks at you. So, they just pulled the trigger when the Cowboy attempted a half-assed snap, e.g. Assad.1 point

I really appreciate the discussion. I've heard that B1G coaches arrive at their seeds multiple ways, so I'm not sure which is true. What I've heard multiple times (and it seems most likely to me) is that they send in their seeds for all the weights. The seeds get averaged out into pre-seeds. Then the coaches have a meeting in which they have the right to challenge a wrestler immediately above their guy. For example, the coach with the five seed challenges the four seed because his kid has a head-to-head win over him. I would hate to see the coaches reinforce ducking. A wrestler can only wrestle the man in front of him. On the other hand, Mikey Carr is an example of a wrestler not wrestling many matches--though I think he's got a valid doctor's excuse. Every year, though, I have to trot this old chestnut out:1 point

If you cut him I literally believe he'd bleed black and gold. I think he's the closest to an embodiment of Gable, more than the Brands or anyone else. The way he wrestled. And the way he thinks and talks, he has that plain, guileless way of expressing himself - it's striking.1 point

With the current Bad Knee Lee, Fix grinds out the 1st period then throws in boots and that'll be all she wrote. But give me a healthy Lee over Fix any day. Teske hung with Fix for 6 minutes until he got caught out of position in a stupid scramble.1 point

Thanks for all of the feedback! Like I said I am no pro so definitely take these for whatever my amateur opinion is. @ILLINIWrestlingBlog @ionel @SocraTease The conference records I have listed are what they are against the other conference opponents who I think will be the starters. So Mike Carr for example wrestled who I believe will be the Minnesota backup and Maryland backup. So I didn't "count" them in his record but I tried to give "credit" for him beating those opponents. Same thing with PSU records. Illinois Thoughts/Reasoning 125 the bottom 5 got weird to me and I definitely could be off. Lujan has a coaches ranking in the top 30 but lost to Steen (PSU). Lujan (MSU) beat Moran (IND) and then Moran beat Vespa (PSU) as Steen didn't wrestle so that is one where it doesn't technically appear on Steen's season record form but I would think it is fair to ding Steen for a "loss." Renteria's (ILL) win was against the MSU backup so I don't know how that factors into the equation? Will definitely be interesting. For Lucas Byrd, that was an interesting one because Mendez beat him but it was back at the MSU open in the very first weekend of the season. Mendez also has the #9 coaches rank and Byrd the #10 and Mendez only has the loss to RBY who Byrd didn't wrestle but there is definitely an argument for Byrd if seeding only goes off of dual meets in conference. 141 got all mixed up from 4-11 with results and that isn't the only weight class this happened. I can definitely see the argument a lot of different ways. Looking at this again I could definitely see Bergeland being lower than I have. Based on my "seeds" #4 Tal-Shahar: Wins: #5, #6, #9, #11 | Losses: #7 #5 Bergeland: Wins: #7, #11 | Losses: #4, #8 #6 Olivieri: Wins: #9, #10 Losses: #4 #7 Pucino: Wins: #4, #8 | Losses: #5 #8 Filius: Wins: #5, #9 | Losses: #7, #11 #9 D'Emilio: Wins: 2-1 #10 | Losses: #4, #6, #8 #10 Mattin: Wins: 1-2 vs. #9, #11 | Losses #6 #11 Zargo: Wins: #8 | Losses: #4, #5, #101 point

I am traveling and BTN won't allow me to watch the match off my cable package remotely so I am left to radio. Grace and Ironside are a nice team together and very pleasant but, geez, they literally don't seem to understand the basic necessities of a radio broadcast. It's like watching the match with two cool buddies commenting. Except I'm not watching, all I've got is their commentary, which only occasionally includes painting a verbal picture of the match, or mentioning things like scores, time, who's doing what move, etc. It would be perfect to listen to synced up to a TV broadcast. But alas.1 point

This is a disingenuous answer. You pretending that being a jerk is equal to unsportsmanlike conduct is playing make believe. Tons of stuff is being a jerk but doesn't come close to the level of unsportsmanlike conduct. The actual rule says unsportsmanlike conduct, includes, but is not limited to, such acts as failure to comply with the direction of the referee, pushing, shoving, swearing, taunting, intimidation, baiting an opponent, throwing ear guards or any other equipment, spitting, the clearing of the nasal passage in other than the proper receptacle, repeatedly dropping to one knee to break locked hands, indicating displeasure with a call, failure to keep shoulder straps up while on the mat and failure to comply with the end-of-match procedure. The closest application for a leg cradle (or for being a jerk in general) would be taunting or intimidation. But any ref that is trying to parse evil intent from appropriate actions is guilty of massive overreach. If the wrestler isn't actually doing something wrong, it is not the job of the ref to try to figure out if the right actions somehow have wrong intent.1 point

I was going to comment right after the dual, but I've earned my grey hair and decided to use my 12 hour rule and think before typing. "Knee jerking" can really be hard on an old mans knees. Another nail biter loss for the Tigers, but give credit where it is do, Okie State was better, and it's always hard to win on the road when a team is defending their home mat. I guess I ought to actually be happy this is a topic on a wrestling forum. I've followed Tiger wrestling long enough to remember the days when Okie State would just "roll the Tigers up in the mats!" To be able to be disappointed is actually a far cry better than the days of just accepting your "ass whooping." As much as Mizzou's coach Smith has improved the program, and I for one are grateful, I ask the question, "Is that a product of recruiting, and how much of that is development as a result of the program?" I guess this could be another thread topic for the forum, but how many of the current wrestlers in Mizzou's program came in as freshman and started and how much have they actually improved? How much is their success linked to their previous high school prep, and or club affiliation, compared to their success/growth in the Tiger system? Of course, this is my biased observation, but some of the Mizzou wrestlers have wrestled the same way from the day one and have not made the adjustments to beat the higher tier AA level wrestlers. Is that a knock on the coaching staff, a result of HEW, all the above? I'm sure this question is not exclusive to just the Mizzou program. Is it coincidental that two of the highest scoring Tiger wrestlers are Askren proteges and command a higher selection of technical weapons vs tactical strategy? I know you need a little of both and maybe I'm getting way off topic and should have waited another 12 hours before punching keys.1 point
