Wonder if the ‘grind’ would fell less crappy if we just went to mat side weigh-ins. Take the crappiest part of wrestling - the hard weight cuts - out of the picture. I’m no doctor but it might also help prevent injuries - less stress on body. Sorry - don’t mean to derail. But thought it was related.3 points

"given the expectation level of the participating teams" that's a heck of a qualifier look at how utterly underwhelming some of the high seeds are. 25 of the 40 Top 4 seeds never AA'd. that's a far cry for the Midlands we know and love. i admit, i don't know what the solution is (and that i'll watch it regardless b/c i love wrestling), but man, i miss the great fields and head-to-heads3 points

It pretty much seems more and more coaches and athletes do not really want to wrestle outsdie of the big show in March anymore. Even at most of the big time duals, the marquee matches often do not happen. Instead of disappointng fans, let's just cut all the b-ll s--t and start with the conference tournaments, take two weeks off to rest, and then hold NCAA Finals and be done with it. Sheesh.2 points

My two cents: How could anybody fault Ayala for this? I respect him MORE for wanting to actually wrestle, and why the hell wouldn't he want to go against the great Spencer Lee? ESPECIALLY if he doesn't go with him in the room. Ayala had nothing to lose here. Lee should put the ego aside and look at it from Drake's point of view. Lee is a warrior and if the shoe was on the other foot, he'd have done the same thing.2 points

It's funny because Minnow is a paying hater. At least Basch owns his colors. Minnow legitimately tries to ruin peoples lives just to twist what they say and manipulate their emotions. Look what he did with Swatfords brother last year. Both Swatford and his brother are actually stellar gents. Top notch and more like every day guys than 99% of D1 wrestlers. Minnow took a fiscally and emotionally sensitive situation and abused it for clicks... JUST TO BE OKAY WITH BEING WRONG. I may poke fun at Swatford and his brother - or at least I did on the old forums quite a bit, but for anyone who knew nothing about Minnow before then, that shows you all you need to know about his character. For those who continue to tickle his juevs with your tongues? Do better.2 points

Byrd always rumbles. He went into the match rumbling but got hit with a cradle. Not sure exactly, but it was something like 9-1 and 11-2 during the match. Lucas then went to work with lots of takedowns, stacking them like pancakes at Merry Ann's Diner in Champaign, ILLINOIS. He took the guy's soul, but the scoring table took the win.2 points

Sadly, the original Nudgers have grown old and the new Nudgers aren't interested in Nudging...2 points

But if you’re watching a college match you probably already understand the scoring system. This just seems like trying to fix a problem that doesn’t really need fixing. Much bigger fish to fry if we’re making changes IMO2 points

This - Rob Koll was actively advocating to make wrestling a second semester sport while he was at Cornell, and for all I know, still does so (mail is slow from the Left Coast though, so we don't hear from him so much anymore! ;-). Coach Grey seems to be sticking to this policy so far - Cornell's Fall Term portion of the schedule was pretty light, with CKLV being the only major tournament scheduled, and a few guys have sat out of early events. Arguably the grind of completing Fall Term coursework and exams while training at a high level is a huge ask for student athletes. Rob and Mizzou's Brian Smith also started the South Beach Duals a few years back with the thinking that the winter break should also provide a bit of a break for the wrestlers. The guys would wrestle a few matches, but it was not as much of a grind as Midlands or the Scuffle; afterwards the team would stay in Florida for a week or so and train on the beach (some of the videos posted on the Cornell website were a hoot!) and enjoy the warm weather (Nice change from Central NY!). This event seems to have morphed into the Collegiate Duals. I think Cael Sanderson has adopted a similar approach over at Happy Valley - the BiG dual schedule is such a grind, there is no need to overload the schedule in November and December. I expect this is a natural progression in coaching/scheduling philosophy. Maybe it would be better to recognize it and view the schedule prior to January as "pre-season" with a few quality events, and perhaps an opportunity to shake out a lineup and get some work in for guys lower on the depth chart; but for the established veterans, look for the real season to begin in the second term.2 points

I am totally missing the boat on these Twitter files. What did Twitter do wrong? The Trump Administration wanted to completely control a false narrative of Biden being an embarrassment and a criminal while providing Biden with no time to defend himself. This is called an October surprise and is an well established dirty political trick. Twitter filtered dick pics and what else to stymie this narrative? As time has proven out, nothing on that laptop is consequential. Search for yourself at https://bidenlaptopemails.com/ How is it that the Trump administration aren't the dirty ones here? They took a hard drive under active FBI investigation and gave it to a SINGLE far right news media corporation - via a private citizen at a news conference! - for the sole purpose of slander. Why not provide to everyone if they are so interested in 1A?2 points

I'm thinking this guy deserves his own thread. True freshman, takes out Cohlton Schultz 4-0, pinned Trent Hilger in the semis, now has Davison in the finals. Can he take out 3 top 10 HWTs? I'm curious how the Hilger match went (it was a late pin). Especially surprising since Pitzer wrestled 215 in high school last year, and Schultz/Hilger are BIG boys. I assume Pitt was planning to redshirt him, but Gavin may need to rethink that. As an aside, check out Pitzer's impressive collection of first period pins last year: PA-Wrestling.com : Mount Pleasant Vikings Wrestling : Dayton Pitzer. 45-0, with only 4 guys making it past the first period (and only 2 past the 2:40 mark).1 point

Lee wrestled in the finals. Didn't have to. Didn't need to, but did. If he hadn't everyone would be bitching about him not wrestling. If someone wants to wrestle...you whip some ass. If you don't, what is the point? ~Hillbilly Hi Koo1 point

Up is down, black is white. We have multiple threads based on the complaint that no one wrestles anyone anymore. And now we have a thread about a wrestler upset he had to wrestle someone.1 point

He spending most of High School learning to follow and lock down 170-190lb wrestlers. Definitely an assist when it comes dealing with keeping up with college big guys on the mat.1 point

Spencer obviously was annoyed. I get his perspective, not wanting to put unnecessary miles on the injured knee against a teammate.. I get Drake's perspective of wanting to wrestle. Seems to me this probably should have been a Brands decision, but in the end its much ado about nothing, IMO. It's an aggressive sport.1 point

He was directing it at the coaches, but from what it looks what he said was about Drake not about them. (Stare down of Drake walking off) Then turns to the coaches and says what looks like “He wanted to go. He wanted that” Then after the hand raise said something that harder to determine but seems to point his mouthpiece towards Drake when he says it So again if things was figured out pre-tournament from the coaches then they dropped the ball and Spencer’s annoyance is misplaced.1 point

Minnow is a paying hater, though. He loves bragging about how he is a booster, yeah?1 point

Gotta consider with the weakness of this event the possibility of this final matchup was there. Any issue on how they would approach the situation could/should have easily been worked through the coaching staff prior to tonight’s match. If not Spencer’s annoyance should have been with them not Drake.1 point

Have seen bits and pieces. 149 (Thomas over Parco) and 165 (Monday over Hamiti) were good. Also not sure if this was already mentioned but broadcasters said they talked to Kenny Monday who confirmed Quincy was planning to stay at 165 for the remainder of the season.1 point

I never understood the issue of wanting someone to FF in the finals when two teammates face. I’d almost always want to see them wrestle it out under normal conditions. I get in this case the coaches and Spencer would like to be cautious so he can stay healthy, but in that case he can be the one to FF as has already occured several times in the past. Drake wanted to be a competitor even if the odds were against him, and I can’t see any of the coaching staff or hardcore Iowa fans trying to advise against that mentality. But either way the in mat drama was a little much, and trying to dig into any practice room drama is a little much here.1 point

Probable is a strong word for theories that have no evidence, making them impossible to verify and equal impossible to disprove. If you tell me about a UFO encounter you had, I won't believe you, but I also can't disprove it. But I'm interested in any of the theories out there that you deem "probable" that could have had election result altering impacts. Not sure why/how you changed the author of my comment to Bernie. He shouldn't be blamed for any of my ramblings. Also, while we can't be sure everything from the Jan. 6 committee is 100% true, they are releasing the testimony and documents to back up the conclusions they have made.1 point

Can we guarantee that a 100% biased Jan 6 committee is telling us the truth? Are there things they did not investigate? The Rs submitted names for the committee and Pelosi said no. She chose biased Rs to be on the committee so that everyone on the committee voted to impeach Trump. That is not what I call a fair or balanced committee or hearing by such a committee. That's what we want of course. mspart1 point

Four ILLINI in the semifinals to include Lucas Byrd, Danny Braunagel, Edmond Ruth and Zac Braunagel. These guys were all the higher seeded wrestler in the quarters except that little Brawny got a big upset against Peyton Hall. By the way, I haven't seen trick knees like Peyton Hall since Tyler Nixt. What an incredible defensive resource. PREDICTION: I think in the next couple of years there will emerge a new kind of wrestler: The stud who only has a loss on his record to Lucas Byrd and Edmond Ruth. THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT! Ermak Kardonov is a Russian wrestler who is really good at freestyle. He's at the ILLINI RTC now. Watching him deal with bottom and top wrestling at the Midlands was both tense and hilarious. Go Ermak! KAREN-TYPE WHINES: If you are going to stream a tournament, you need to also have a dashboard or brackets that a body can click on to take you directly to the match you want to see. Having one company stream while another company carries the live brackets and dashboard sucks. I almost swatted BTN Headquarters because of this. A second peeve is the lack of nudgers. Apparently none of these companies can find or afford to hire someone to nudge the camera when the action moves to the side of the mat. ALL I'M ASKING FOR IS A NUDGE. ARE NUDGERS SO HARD TO FIND? IT WOULD TAKE THREE SECONDS TO TRAIN A NUDGER IN THE ART OF NUDGING! ONLY FOR HARDCORE ILLINI FANS: I was really impressed with Dylan Connell and Danny Pucino. Connell got beat 1-8 by Pitt's Reece Heller in the dual, then turned that into an SV loss at Midlands. He's still in the mix for a placement. Same with Pucino. These guys are wrestling their first full years at ILLINOIS, and will be forces for good in the future. Really disappointed that nobody at 125 or 157 from the team could show up and pick up their teammates.1 point

We talked about this on the old forum. I don’t like it. Sure, 6-5-4-3 is arbitrary but I think it works in determining who the better team was that day. And you’d still need an a arbitrary amount for a pin with this. And yes, the 9 1-0 matches vs 1 pin scenario isn’t going to happen, but something like 1 team winning 7 matches with an average margin of victory of 7 but losing 50-49 because they lost 2 by pin and 1 by 10 definitely could (I found 1 or 2 examples just in the past couple yesrs in the last thread) I don’t see how it would even be much if any easier to understand for fans. In high school many duals will end up with ~250+ total team points1 point

Nope - you're wrong, Willie. Midlands is a good show, given the expectation level of the participating teams, and super high quality B1G+ broadcast. Highest caliber guys weren't there, but it's a rebuilding year for the tournament after hiatus. No reason to believe it doesn't make a big jump next year. It's good. OK - you're only half wrong. Soldier Salute sucks rocks. Truly terrible. Cool that proceeds go to a deserving fund. But doubt the proceeds will amount to much given how lame it is.1 point
-
That scenario ... will never happen unless it's gamed to be that way and if it's gamed that way, someone (more than one) should be fired. Good luck finding ANY scenario (we've looked) where you have 9 one-point decisions vs. one fall. Just doesn't happen. Won't happen despite it being statistically possible. I like point scored and a fall is 20. Yes, there CAN be a 22-point tech fall, but again, you're looking to create some safeguard for the statistical anomaly. Right now, 4 wins can beat 6, 3 cannot beat 7. 3 COULD beat 7 if you get three falls and the rest of the offense is a dude, but hey, you know the rules, you want to win the match, score points. Let's NOT not do something because of the chances to get struck by lightning.1 point
