  3. That's usually my schtick, Mike. I think you're off by a decimal point. $10,000÷1800 is about $5.55 per sheet. Nonetheless, I had no idea of the volume or cost of shipping containers. Thanks, that does help to put it in perspective.

  4. If foreign companies were kept to the same standard for environmental regulation (it's one world after all..) and anti-competitive practices were addressed, I don't think there would be much justification for off-shoring of so much manufacturing. However, most literature I see on the topic almost always skews towards justification of off-shoring. Tells me all I need to know about the value of a Nobel in Economics... And to have it primarily done in a country that is, euphemistically speaking, a competitive rival, is just adding insult to injury. The writing has been on the wall for quite some time and the pandemic has made it impossible to ignore.

  5. Ok. facts. Oldest daughter was born in NY, AJ JR lived there briefly as a baby, but all 3 boys born in Texas. 50 of the Ferrari family moved from NY to Texas in 2000. All of those family members live right by each other, that is why they feel they still live in NY. Straight from the man. I was incorrect...

  6. This points to a nit pick of mine. I know Flo likes to say their rankings are not ratings or predictions. But then they sometimes are. To me the most glaring example is their team tournament rankings. They come up with their scores by assuming their rankings are where each wrestler will finish thereby turning their ranking into a prediction. Minor point, but that is my especiality.

  10. My wife and I wandered into a bar/pub in Bloomsburg, PA to get a late supper about 5 years ago. These guys started playing and the windows were rattling, the glasses and plates were rattling, even the fillings in my teeth were rattling. I don't know what a defibrillator feels like cranked all the way up, but I'm thinking this was about it. Drive was the exact word that I thought of that night. I honestly could feel the bass like it was in my chest, both the strings and him pounding on the body. You really get no feeling from this video, but...

  11. Reminder: I use Intermat, Flo, and Wrestlestat individual rankings. I treat the rankings like they are seeds. EP (expected points) are based on the average advancement and placement points scored by each seed from 2010 - 2022. Max Place & Adv assume each wrester wrestles to seed and takes the most optimal path (advances in the championship bracket as far as possible). Mean Place & Adv assumes each wrestler wrestles to seed but takes the average path for places that have multiple paths. Expected AA is the probability weighted number of All-Americans a team can expect. All sorts are based on EP. Intermat Pre-Season Top 20 Intermat Current Top 20 With Missouri, Cornell and Iowa State moving up it looks to be a three team battle for the last two podium slots. Meanwhile Arizona State, and Ohio State head in the other direction having dropped 12 and 14 points, respectively, from their expected totals. Both teams will look to reverse what has been a rough start to the season. At the top, there has been a modest tightening, but PSU still holds an expected 16.1 point lead over Iowa.

  12. He lost. ... unless some group gives him the money and lawyers so he can stomp around like a spoiled child claiming he was cheated, and the election was stolen and other ridiculous nonsense. Then we'd watch as our democratic electoral process is dragged through sewage by lawyers because massive, unbalanced wealth makes it possible. (Which is hard to believe is even possible in a modern civilized country - yet proof is readily available.) We should be able to get along just fine. One less unqualified dope in Congress is good for all of us. He lost, we all get over it, we move on.

  16. A 40' container has 2390 cubic feet of volume. It costs ~$10K to ship from China to the USA. 4'x8'x1/2" sheetrock is 1.33 cubic feet. That's about 1800 sheets of sheetrock per 40' container. That's about $0.55 per sheet in shipping. Even small gains on labor, material and energy costs will quickly dwarf the shipping costs. I'm not advocating for China based production, I'm just doing the math.

  17. I absolutely believe that American companies are incentivized by tax law and corporate law to outsource products to other countries. I know nothing about the production of sheet rock and very little about the production of plywood, but both absolutely have to be extremely automated, using very little direct labor. To me, this eliminates the old "cost of labor" justification for outsourcing to China, yet that's what I see in Lowes and Home Depot, Chinese sheet rock and plywood. When you add in what has to be very significant shipping costs, things don't add up. These are two extreme examples, yet they prove the point. When I go to the grocery store and see fresh milk from China, I'm moving somewhere, I don't know where. Other countries, for example Switzerland, very much try to keep their manufacturing at home. We need to use their example.

  18. Warner is a 3x AA and has proved he steps up at NCAA's so it would be very surprising if he did not AA. Group 1 - Alred, Pinto, Cronin, Bubba Wilson Group 2 - Murin, PK, Assad, Brands, Teske Group 2 surely looks more likely to have an AA than group 1 if you take off your corn colored glasses.

  24. I take an alternate semi-head in the sand approach to trying to figure out what's going on in Washington, lower governments, and the business world. I consume very little "news" from much of anywhere. I simply watch what's going on in the world around me and ask Scott Adams' question, "Which is more likely". This is how I have come up with my view that what any of us individually believes, or how we vote, is immaterial. As long as the general public is split about 50/50 on what we've been told are "the issues", "they" can contiue to pick our bones and our childrens' bones nearly clean. It's all simply a shell game. We're the patsies, the rich, powerful guys are the winners, and our taxes and purchases are the money being put into the game. The real problem is there is almost no integrity or empathy in government or Big Business. Granted, I'm less "real time" than someone who is keeping more abreast of the goings on, but I like to think I get BSed less. I'm not reading the recipe nor watching the cook prepare the food. I'm merely eating it and know it tastes like crap. And, it's the only place to eat in town.

  32. He would most likely be as successful again. He was a force of nature and got his wrestlers to buy into the reality that they were Champions - and they went out and proved it. Cael is the same - just different methods. Both are great leaders who get their kids to push for excellence even if some don't quite get there on the mat.

  33. Interesting idea. He completely dominated college wrestling as a coach for years. He may have done better these days but his mindset of nose to the grindstone doesn't sit as well these days with youngsters as much as having fun. Maybe having fun is all in the attitude. Obviously the PSU guys grind it out but they think it is fun. Perhaps Iowa's guys think it is hard work. Both are the top 2 teams in the nation with two different philosophies. Cael somehow has made it work and made it work fairly quickly. Prescient he was padawan. mspart

  36. I went a couple of clinics at Grove City years ago....Jim Humphrey (Indiana) one week and Dave Schultz (Wisconsin) the other. I'm sure they had ulterior motives for being there (wink)....at the clinics were Kenny Ramsey, Rex Holman and Adam DiSabato.....Hellickson got all 3 though. The Schultz clinic was super....not that Hump was bad. Schultz renamed a hold the "Grove City leg hook" to add a little humor.

  39. I didn't read the post, but I fed it into chatGPT, and asked it to rewrite it for clarity and split into multiple paragraphs. The result is below. I have no idea how well it did (because I didn't read the original post), but at least it's something to start the discussion. There are many factors that are trending high school wrestling towards becoming a niche sport. These issues have been discussed in various posts, but it is unclear which factors can be addressed most easily. One factor is the growing battle for participants, especially with fewer multi-sport athletes. Another factor is the trend towards co-ops in small districts for sports such as hockey, swimming, gymnastics, and even football. This could lead to a similar trend in wrestling. Another issue is the increasing number of forfeits due to a lack of willingness to consider fewer weight classes. This not only reduces opportunities for wrestlers, but also negatively impacts fans who may not know if the wrestler they want to watch will have a match or a forfeit. The reliance on long tournaments also discourages many families from committing to them. Finding coaches who are also teachers within the school is becoming more difficult, making it harder to recruit new wrestlers and exacerbating the belief that youth experience is necessary. The continued reliance on coaches for input on improving the overall health of the sport is also an obstacle, as most are only willing to support initiatives that benefit their team in the short term. While the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has provided some guidance, the concept of offering three options for weight classes further weakens the health of the sport. It is hoped that younger minds will come up with ways to grow the sport, as little progress has been made in the last 20 years. It is also hoped that someone will convince their state to pilot something new and different, such as margin of victory scoring or matside weigh-ins with locked line-ups. This could help convince fellow students and casual fans that watching a dual match can be time well spent.

  42. Wresltestat has it as a OSU victory at 22-9, but it gives Bergeland the win at 141 and we might not see him: https://www.wrestlestat.com/compare/dual/57/oklahoma-state/42/minnesota 125 - Tossup, they are 1-1 against one another 133 - Heavily favor OSU here, but the score will be closer than the match us. Nagao us stingy. 141 - I think Young beats Bergeland if he shows and wins against whoever they throw out if otherwise 149 - Will we see Blockhus? I am taking VV if he does or doesn't show. 157 - G and Lee will be a very interesting match if it happens. Lee is a grinder who gasses people. 165 - Tossup. Sparks or Carlson can beat Sheets, but Sheets wrestles good, close matches and is plenty capable if the W. 174 - Plott in a match that the score is closer than the match looks. 184 - Whittlake via Decision on Salazar or Foy. The further in to the season we get the more comfortable Whittlake will be. 197 - Surber via domination on Joles. 285 - Doucet comfortably. It is hard not to see a blowout for the 'boys being as we haven't seen the Gofa lineup at it's peak strength yet.

  44. Well . . . to be perfectly honest, in my humble opinion, and of course without offending anyone who thinks differently from my point of view, but also by looking into this matter from various differentiated perspectives and without condemning another's perspective but still trying to be objective and disinterested in my analysis, and by considering each and every sound argument, I honestly believe that I completely forgot what I was going to say.
