Bro- Are you even aware of how you respond to people in the "non-wrestling" threads? I mean for the love, in this thread alone you clearly have a problem with people that are thinking differently than you. This statement by you is complete hypocrisy. The problem with Brooks is the arrogance that comes through while preaching- it was the same when he said something to the effect or implied that David Taylor wasn't godly enough. That's what is annoying as hell to people. The same way when yourself and others preach about how trump and maga is essentially your religion or prophet. The problem isn't Christianity, it's his penchant for being at the height of pompousness when droning on about it... Carr is equally if not further down the religious continuum and he doesn't act like that and comes across way more likable. I suppose everyone is a hypocrite to some extent when it comes to believing in their own value system and reacting negatively to a differing of opinion and you my friend are no exception- far from it.3 points

He stole from little kids, at the very least... and that isn't even getting in to the $hit he allegedly did. Bad, evil, and incompetent are all not good. Once you cross a certain threshold, unacceptable is unacceptable.2 points

In wrestling we are particularly given to holding up certain figures in borderline religious, certainly cult-like ways. The wrestling community doesn’t know what to do if it doesn’t have somebody to bow to as the next “gable”. This (apparently, I’m just hearing about most of this stuff this week) leads to narrow, myopic, and uncritical or highly unobjective lenses being applied to lots of situations. Sex-related and abuse-related topics all bursting forth at once smacks very much of a broader issue of a lack of accountability or standards maintenance as a community.2 points

Many athletes have spoken about their faith, taking advantage of a post match win interview (such as after the NCAA finals) to profess their belief and yet, to my memory, none of them have elicited anything near the type of reaction that Brooks has. Jason Nolf, David Carr, Stephen Buchanan, Alex Marinelli are just the few wrestlers that come to mind who where very vocal about their faith in Christ. Some of these wrestlers have their fair share of detractors but I have yet to see anybody criticize them for their religion (other than Marinelli, who is ragged on for everything, including the audacity to have a wife, apparently). Carr seems to be a universal favorite in fact. The only thing I have seen negative about him are jokes about his boogers. What Brooks did was obnoxious, pompous, "you-are-wrong" preaching. He could have been Muslim, buddhist, rastafarian, hell, he could have been preaching about veganism and it still would have come off as obnoxious due to the tenor and intensity of the message. If anything, if he were Muslim the reaction would have been far more heated. you also have the interview where he said his underhook "was from the holy Spirit" and therefore superior to Yazdani's who only got his from "some coach". Not only is that obnoxious, I would say that ventures on the edge of delusion. Then there's the Basch interview following Olympic trials which has been brought up a few times. Dissing on your teammate is one thing (note that this was the eggsact thing Bartlett was dumped on by PSU fans when he made his first and only message board post) but then to claim DT isn't faithful enough in the same breath as comparing yourself to Jesus was just a wild ride of delusion. Finally, have you seen his YouTube channel? I haven't watched nearly every video because they are literally painful to get through but the parts that aren't legitimately unhinged are so aggressive in their "you are lacking" (therefore I know the way) messaging it makes a man wince. You mesh these things together, along with a few other interviews I've seen over the years, and you get the portrait of a generally unlikeable person who loves preaching and telling people about all the ways they are lacking (implying he is better) while breaking rules repeatedly. In all the videos I've seen of Brooks, he does not come across as a guy that is fun to be around. That's why I called him an asshole and that's the crux of this discussion. To try and twist this into something political is smooth brained and pu$$y sh!t Now to be fair, I thought Brooks came off as very personable in this interview and I felt true sympathy when he talked about his struggles this past year. I can no longer say that Brooks comes off as an obnoxious asshole in every video I've seen of him. Perhaps he's turning a corner2 points

Isaiah Powe is an interesting one; he took a 25 - 2 record into NCAAs his true freshman year, went into the portal but then returned to Chattanooga. . . and followed it up w/ an 0-3 sophomore year. To be fair to him, his 3 losses were Mendez, Latona, and Eligh Rivera of Princeton; all in November and then he went MIA after that and back in the portal. Something seems off in all of that but there's also some real potential in the right room.2 points

This is the most tired and trite of simultaneously defeatest and enabling comments you can make. It’s a wrestling specific issue in that this is a wrestling forum and we are talking about wrestling, and we care about the continued health and safety of the sport, and all athletes therein. The excessively physical nature of the sport needn’t be expounded upon, but respecting and protecting the physical wellbeing of your opponents is a fundamental tenet of the sport in a way that is extremely rare in sport. I’m pretty sure that is self-evident though.2 points

I appreciate your effort, so I am gonna restate my position as well as I can, and if someone points out an instance where I was implying something else I'll apologize. "In a world where we are all moving forward productively, you should not criticize someone for saying what they think, especially if you should have inferred that belief already." -Me. If you don't support his belief that is a different and much deeper question than whether he should have said it or not. Aside from that, I think Brooks has 1.5 feet in the a$$hole camp, I think he's immature and narcissistic in his perception of religion and use of his platform, and I think his public statements are self serving and do nothing to promote the causes he claims to be advocating.1 point

I think your understanding of the matter is what is shifting because of how detailed and verbose we have to be in order to get the point across that this isn't a matter of denigrating his belief in god but rather his attitude. And after having to fully lay out the reasons people find him a bit insufferable at times you may finally agree but that would mean admitting you may have been partiallly wrong or at least give ground to the opposing viewpoint which is a bridge to far for some on here.1 point

there is some serious goal post shifting going on. Whether or not Brooks should be criticized for stating something he believes is a different subject than whether everything he's every said is in good taste and in keeping with the humility his claims imply he should be embodying.1 point

It’s not a right, it was a crime for the first 200 years of this country. If you steal a stop sign and it causes an accident that kills a pregnant woman, you can be charged for two counts of murder. Abortion is now legal in some states, not in others. Your concern is that it’s not federally funded everywhere.1 point

Public Funding for Infrastructure: Illinois taxpayers are contributing nearly $200 million for infrastructure improvements related to the center. This includes $174 million for roadwork in and around Jackson Park and $50 million for renovations to the Garfield Green Line station, with half of the station's renovation costs covered by a federal grant Federal Reimbursements: A significant portion of the state's expenditure on these infrastructure projects is expected to be reimbursed by the federal government. Reports indicate that at least $139 million—about 80% of the public funding—will likely be covered by federal funds.1 point

In fact, in an email to FactCheck.org, James Pritchett, the director of public and media communications at the National Archives and Records Administration, confirmed that the Obama Presidential Center will be a “private entity” and “will not receive any funding from the National Archives.” NARA operates the other presidential libraries, but it will not operate the Obama library1 point

They’re all *I poop my pants, don't laugh at me*ty, sex-based or sex-adjacent issues of power dynamics, all of which got covered up, swept under the rug, or otherwise ignored or minimized by other responsible adults, oftentimes for years even decades. The issue is that many of the people who were committing these acts, hiding these messes, or sidestepping responsibility for being a responsible adult are people who have been lionized as a considerable part of modern wrestling lore. That is all the same issue, and it is not a small one. The fact that in the span of a month Snyder’s situation went from “oh nooo bad bad bad” to “[shoulder shrug] eh, not much to write home about all things considered” is the big whiplash aspect of this.1 point

The actual overall problem, with admitting that's there's actually a problem(s) in the wrestling community/world. Beyond individual situations is that. There are 2-3 unspoken rules/axioms that ALWAYS come into play whenever actually addressing any situation, (And by situation, it can be anything from inappropriate relationships, cheating, poaching etc. the "issue" and the severity can vary) comes into play 1. "That's just how it is at da high level, if you have a problem with it, it's "obviously" because you're a non competitive pussy who's not willing to do what it actually takes to win" a sub variation is "how could it be bad for the sport long term if my team or kid benefits??, huh, like f looking at the big picture" 2. "Yeah it's bad, but this going public will be a black eye for the sport so it's not worth it" 3. Someone is protected or it would drag someone who's not really at fault down too. OR if this gets revealed too many will go down. And I've seen multiple times that someone tries to share, and gets ignored or silenced. Or even loses coaching privileges. That's leaving aside the cases of safe sport doing nothing after interviewing victims with evidence. and as someone said on another thread, due to wanting access, the interior reporting isn't going to dig into what they heard at drinks with some coaches. And everything feeds back into just shoving down or excusing everything1 point

I know it is just the algo, but I am really curious what would cause it to spit out Parco > Brown at 149, when Brown had more wins and more wrestlestat ranked wins (and better losses)1 point

Too bad they couldn't figure out how to correctly rank Ivy greyshirt freshmen. For instance, at 149 Jaxon Joy (who went 29-1 last year) pinned Hibler. At 165 Louis Cerchio (who went 29-6) beat Myers and majored Taylor.1 point

Power dynamics always trump claims of consensual. The SOU situation will also be painted as consensual by the accused (assuming they accept the relationship at all). It’ll be the only credible claim considering evidence like texts etc.1 point

It's gross what people in authority will do or will allow to be done. It's gross that in sports so many people in authority will ignore gross stuff to avoid upsetting a winning program. It's gross that wrestling is like other sports and other places where authority is abused.1 point

Ain't that the truth. Bro literally has his name on the wrestling room and it's not enough. In the future though, deep-pocketed entities will likely be able to take equity stakes in athletic programs once pay-for-play really gets going. ADs and department stakeholders are going to have to learn to live with ceding control of their programs1 point
