  2. I was going through Euros and noticed Mongush and spencer had a common opponent and was diving a bit deeper into mongush and it made me think Worlds may not be the walk in the park I thought it was for Spencer but I wanted to set this up more like a dual format than just those two. 57kg: Lee (2x u20 world champ olympic silver) vs Mongush (u23 world champ 2025 senior euros champ) common opponent Bazargonov spencer won 6-3 Mongush won 5-0. Mongush also notably lost in the finals to to suda 8-8 at 61kg who is probably our 61kg's biggest opp at worlds. I will go spencer here but I think Mongush is his toughest opponent and he is on a pretty wild growth trajectory. 1-0 61kg: Jax/Vito (senior gold and bronze)/(cadet silver) vs Uguev(2x world 1x olympic gold at 57kg) Uguev still won euros this year in a controversial one to Haryutunyan. Suda that I mentioned above is probably our toughest opponent I think either guy we send beats Uguev. 2-0 65kg: Real (ranking series bronze) vs Mamedov (junior world champ senior bronze) I love Reals trajectory and how freely he has been wrestling but Mamedov is a very unique challenge that I do not think Real can overcome right now. 2-1 70kg: PJ (Junior bronze) vs Baev (world gold, junior gold, u23 silver) PJ's gives him a shot against anyone I think but Yianni got to his legs and finished pretty surgically once he got through the head hands and Baev is wrestling as good as anyone at any weight right now. I think Baev takes this one 2-2. 74kg: Carr (cadet bronze, Junior gold) vs sounds like sidakov will be going (3x world gold 1x olympic gold) Sidakov did lose to valiev at Euros prior to the injury which should give some hope that he is becoming more human. That being said Carr did not have many answers to Salkazonov who has always been a tier below sidakov so I am not ready to predict that level of upset until I see it. 3-2 Russia. 79kg: Haines (pan am champ) vs Usmanov (junior silver world gold) Usmanov is a monster I think Levis inexperience internationally may prove troublesome for him but a the same time he is going to present a pace that the European guys will not like. Usmanov is a monster though I would pick him against whomever America sent aside from maybe Kyle. 4-2 Russia. 86kg: Zahid (world bronze, junior silver) vs Naifanov/Kadiev (junior gold,u23 silver, 2x world bronze)/(2x junior gold) (the russians on X think Kadiev is the second coming however to my knowledge Naifonov beat him last time they wrestled and he was the rep at euros so I am expecting him to be there. Whoever they send I think Zahid is the best wrestler at this weight. The only question is if his cardio allows him to be the best for 6 minutes. 4-3 Russia 92kg: I am not sure who Russia sends here Karugliev is their best guy but he wrestles for greece Trent should clear whoever goes at this weight perhaps Kadiev bumps. 4-4 97kg: snyder vs Sadulaev we have seen this one before one guy appears to still be close to peak of his powers and the other has lost to a 20 year old from japan this year so I do not expect the upset we always hope for 5-4 Russia 125kg: Wyatt kills whoever they send 5-5

  3. In response to my returning points thread, someone on 34andcounting asked what kind of points could a freshman be expected to score at the NCAA Tournament. Using Willie's Big Board data I decided to take a look. One huge caveat is that the numbers below are fitted lines through some VERY noisy data. The first thing I looked at was the odds of qualifying for the tournament based on BB rank. There are 12 years worth of graduating classes in the data (2013 - 2023) that have completed true freshman and redshirt freshman years. For these calcs I am including true freshmen and redshirt freshmen for each high school graduating year. For example, for 2022 grads I include 2023 true freshmen plus 2024 redshirt freshmen. 80% of Success is Showing Up 100% of #1 Big Boarders qualified for the tournament as either a true freshman or a redshirt freshman. These are your only sure things. By the time you get to the #10 BB it is a 50/50 proposition whether they even qualify for the tournament, never mind score once they get there. No Participation Points But you can't just show up. Once a freshman makes the tournament they still need to score. Combining scoring with probability of making the tournament steepens the curve somewhat. At almost 18 points per, #1 BB can be expected to score in the high teens in their freshmen year (true or redshirt). But that is it. No other rank cracks double digits. And by the time you get to the #10 ranked freshman recruit you are looking at about 4 points. Bring in da' Noise, Bring in da' Funk That really should be Mitchell Mesenbrink's walk out music. Remember what I said about the noise in the data? Mesenbrink is the physical embodiment of that noise (and he was trained by the Master of Funk). As the #59 ranked wrestler in his class, the line above suggests he is good for about a half a point in his freshman year. Well, at 19.5 points he is what we would call an outlier. And the reason you should take this with a grain of salt.

  4. I just threw up a new database that has all ~40k matches that have taken place at the NCAA D1 championships. Check it out here. I just noticed the search and filter aren't working. I'm going to have to reach out to try and figure out why. Enjoy!

  8. Short answer, He targeted kids who were from small towns and depended on scholarships to be there. Nobody ever swung on him because he was an extremely well respected doctor and, in their minds, nobody was going to believe a child over an incredibly liked and tenured professor of medicine. So some kept quiet. Many did speak up. Near 200 formal complaints had been filed, when it was all said and done, and the school didn't do anything about it. Actively covered it up. This includes Jim Jordan.

  9. I agree on prospect camps, but if its a good one and they want you there it opens tons of doors. I suppose for the East Coast it is less necessary bc things are so close in proximity. However, for kids in a place like AZ it could be the ticket for a lot of these guys.

  17. I feel like a jerk for turning the conversation away from Askren, but this post hits on one of the most important lessons of my life. Nietzsche was wrong when he said, "What doesn't kill you makes you stronger" and believing him can lead to an insidious shame cycle. Sometimes what doesn't kill you now just makes you an easier target the next time.

  18. If you know anything about the way colleges operated then (and now)... Everyone at Ohio State knew about the doctor. Plenty of people complained about him. Those who complained were told by the administration to pound sand. As such, friends and teammates warned their friends and teammates about the doctor and told them to make the best of it. It's laughable to think that Jordan could've done anything about the doctor then. And, yes, whether you agree with Jordan's politics or not, his political opponents are going to make hay about it. They do not accept his denials, nor would they forgive him if he changed course and said he did know. Hopefully, one more documentary on this type of "incident" means there will be one less similar case in the future. But, be forever warned - predators are going to go where the kids are, and there's lot's of kids on athletic teams and at college campuses.

  20. Just watched it and oof that was a tough one, especially being a buckeye myself. After making this post, I ended up reading into the allegations and noticed Strauss had a lot of publications on steroids and PEDs. I wondered if that played a role, and it seems it did. I bet every university had a similar roid guy back then cuz dudes were freaking jacked. Look at Coleman and Kevin Randleman, for one. It was particularly sad watching how Russ Hellickson and Jim Jordan went from family to these guys and role models to straight up turning their backs on them. That was pretty heartbreaking. I'm impressed with the whistleblower in 95. I can't believe their response to somebody being sexually assaulted is "hey how about you come in tomorrow, and you, the doctor who assaulted you, and I can talk it over". That's a no from me dog. He handled it like a champ and, had the doctor's boss not straight up lied to him about complaints, would've sued em.

Low IQ folks throwing crap at the wall to see if any sticks and only going after what does. All the while staying on the offense and hopefully not giving your opponents enough time to create their own offense. It is somewhat effective for mental midgets who want to feel powerful... like Trump and his low IQ followers.

  39. So has Hellickson never said much more? I am curious how much Jordan may have been involved in his silence. To be fair, if Jordan said something like “if you admit you knew then you’re going down too,” which probably wouldn’t be wrong. Edit: But it was sad how multiple guys felt Hellickson in particular was a father figure to him and then felt betrayed

  42. Just watched. (spoiler) I wouldn’t say it was “very political.” Politics weren’t mentioned until the last 25 minutes or so, and only about Jordan, I don’t think there was anything about the “GOP in general.” Towards the end was definitely anti-Jordan, but it was based on the stories of the multiple wrestlers (and referee) that were interviewed. They said Hellickson had told them he would support them, but then ghosted them, and they blamed Jordan for that, since they said Jordan also called them asking them to publicly support himself. But I think the bigger “hit piece” was more against Ohio State, rightfully so. Jordan was of course also mentioned earlier in the doc, but usually in conjunction with Hellickson. There was definitely the implication earlier on that they blew off allegations at the time. Which then was contrasted to the female fencing coach actually making complaints. One thing I don’t recall reading about previously was the steroid allegations. I thought the story of Dan Ritchie, as well as the hockey player were particularly sad.
