  1. With the USA's struggles at 65kg over the past twenty years and the revolving door that is USA reps at the weight, I went back year by year to 2006 and looked found every medalist in Worlds and Olympics. During this span, 12 wrestlers have represented the red white and blue. 6 of them were 1 time reps. 4 have represented the USA twice. Zain has been the man on three separate occasions, and Metcalf leads the pack with 4 trips to the World Championships. This made me wonder if other countries have had a similar lack of continuity with their representatives, as well as similar struggles to place at the worlds most competitive weight class. Here are the most to least medals by country since 2006. 1. Russia: 12 total medals from 8 different wrestlers. 4 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze 2. Japan: 6 medals from 3 different wrestlers. 4 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze 3. India: 6 medals from two different wrestlers. 1 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze 4. Iran: 5 medals from 3 different wrestlers. 1 gold, 3 silver, 1 bronze 5: Georgia: 5 medals from 2 different wrestlers. 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronze 6. Cuba: 5 medals from 2 different wrestlers. 1 silver, 4 bronze 7. Hungary: 3 medals from Muszukajev. 1 gold, 2 bronze 8. Azerbaijan: 3 medals from two different wrestlers. 3 silver 9. Mongolia: 3 medals from two different wrestlers. 3 bronze 10. Turkey: 2 gold medals from Sahin. 11: USA: 1 gold from Zadick, 1 silver from Diakomihalis. 12. Italy: Chamizo 1 gold, 1 bronze / Armenia: 1 gold and 1 bronze. 13: Ukraine, Navruzov, Kazakhstan, Puerto Rico all with 1 silver and 1 bronze each. 14. Poland with 1 silver. 15. Moldova, Kyrgyzstan, and Albania with 1 bronze each. Some other interesting notes that I discovered during this research include.. No wrestler has won 3 golds at 65kg, and only three have claimed 2. Otuguru for Japan, Romonov for Russia, and Sahin for Turkey. Only Tushishvili of Georgia, Lopez of Cuba, Punia of India, Romonov, Muszukajev, and Yonemitsu have medaled 3 times at the weight. Only Tushishvili and Punia have earned four medals with 1 silver and 3 bronze respectively, and no one has 5 medals. Of the 40 medalists over the past 20 years, exactly 20 of those wrestlers earned just 1 medal at the weight class. I spent far too much time putting this together (I'm sure someone better with excel could have done it much faster than I) and maybe @Wrestleknownothing can create an interesting graphic from this information if it suits his interest. Nevertheless, if you actually take the time to read this, I'd love to for you to share any takeaways you might have from the information, how it pertains to USA wrestling, or just the landscape of 65kg as a whole.

  6. That ignores a whole lot of stuff. In spite of the fact that their average finish was third....read that again....their average finish was third.....across ten guys, it is only "underperformance" because their average seed was 2.6 AND they could do no better than finish first in any weight. I will go out on a limb here and say that no team will ever have an average seed of 2.6 or better AND outperform that seed with six or more wrestlers. The highest average seed to ever outperform their seed is 2024 PSU which was seeded 4.0 on average and finished 3.6 on average. Of course, to do that they needed the prohibitive favorite to get injured, forfeit two matches, and get seeded 9th so that there were 8 potential slots of improvement. Let's say Starocci was seeded first instead. Then they would have had an average seed of 3.2 and an average finish of 3.6 for an identical -0.4 performance as 2025.

  7. Dear wrestlers, only tell us what we want to hear. Not what you want to say. Everyone on here complaining about the wrestlers is doing exactly what the wrestlers are doing. The hypocrisy is priceless.

  15. He's been fired from multiple coaching jobs for lying or other misconduct. He actually isn't in charge of anything in Cabo Verde anymore and he was not selected to participate in the Olympics. He did try to obtain a quote but he didn't get it. He undermined people, stole, and misrepresented himself to both Cabo Verde's Olympic delegation and UWW. So he is not a good guy at all. He even got kicked out of coaching at a qualifier last year for using fake credentials.

  16. I think we also have to take into account that is a weight class that CONSTANTLY chews itself up domestically. If we had a system which allowed guys to win a shot at two teams instead of having to re-justify themselves every year, we would have a medal, but there are so many guys just beating the sh*t out of each other on the way to a spot, they are far less than spry when it comes time to compete internationally. My evidence for this is the success that the whole michigan room (and seabass) have had once they extricate themselves from the annual spring meat grinder that is the US Open World Team Trials Gauntlet. They have a locked up spot and they get to rest and train and peak properly instead of just running the gauntlet over and over again. Our system is equitable domestically, but it hamstrings us internationally.

  18. Nice work brother. I have no great answers, but I'll offer a theory. 65kg, in general, has one of the highest concentrations of talent, but even more so outside the US, since the average person is smaller outside the US. If you look it up you'll see the US average height/weight is higher than all the countries you listed above, save Poland. As a result, that's the weight range where a lot of other countries' best wrestlers are, so it's most competitive. It's concentrated there in the US too, just not to the same extent as other countries.

  25. Tell me a wrestler. Let’s say who competed his whole career 6th grade - senior year. And misses the podium by one spot. Tell me that doesn’t bother him for the rest of his life. Imagine your woman. Same situation and you didn’t make the podium because some dude decided to compete and got to sit on top of that podium…. Keeping you off of it. Be trans. Who cares. 27. Main event is Dake/Zahid, for sure, but I’m most interested in Duke/Yianni. It seems like everything’s finally coming together after a few bumpy years for Yianni, and PJ is on a tear. Carr/Mesenbrink should be the most fun to watch, but I’m expecting a blowout. Great time to be a wrestling fan!

  31. I did this as well, but I didn't finish it so my computer crashed. 125-Both the finalist are back. 133-Ono has ONE year to learn Folkstyle. He can take Crookham down 3 times, but Crookham is a MONSTER on top. If he were to not score early and choose down, he's likely getting ridden for 2 minutes AND very possibly getting turned(and maybe multiple times). 141-Mendez as you said, 2 TIME DEFENDING CHAMP, Hardy. Lots of others COULD win any of these, but just the obvious. 149-The guy who has won the title two years ago and took a 2nd last year! 157-Shapiro could certainly win that match as well as Taylor. 165-MM is the clear favorite and I'd bet the house on him, but a guy like Mantanona on his own little vision quest COULD give him some problems. But 165 is a near lock. 174-Haines wins it...BUT lets say for the sake of argument that Sinclair goes 174 next year? Sinclair is absolutely...without a doubt talented enough to beat Levi Haines. Haines is still the clear favorite, but Sinclair is built like a '74. I really believe 9 out of 10 kids his size, height, build, everything, they'd cut to 174. He doesn't cut at all and I believe could make '74 and do so while not losing any of that gas tank. Just the opposite, when he wrestled '97, he was getting worn down by Wrestling guys who were probably 20-25 pounds heavier and cutting while he was weighing in under weight. But he LIKELY won't do that. 184-There are 5 guys here who could win it. McEnelly...when would a guy who took a 5X(lets say 4X) Champ to the wire and lost in SV, then loses at the NCAA to a guy who went 3,3,2,1,2 also in SV NOT be the overwhelming favorite? Maybe in a year in which you'll have another incredible young talent in Ferrari? Or how about Ryder? I would have preferred to see Ryder stay as a fan of the sport. I don't know that they got much better. Aedon Sinclair is a darkhorse here. He's as good as anyone in that 2024 class IMO...I even went back and added him as a threat at '74. Welsh was on the easIER side of the bracket at 174 when he lost to Starocci in the finals. It's NEVER easy to get to the finals, but 3 Champs were in that bracket and he Wrestled none of them to get to the finals. 197-Of course AJ Ferrari if he can stay healthy. HWT- I think PSU should be the favorite at 133, 157, 165, 174, 197 That's pretty good. I think they CAN win at 125, 141 and 149. But this past year, they just as likely could have won at '25, '41, '49, '57, '65, '74, '84, '97 and they looked to have the biggest threat to Hendrickson. Penn State is THAT far ahead of the field(though Okie St is looking like they'll be gaining a LOT of ground in '27, '28...that doesn't mean each individual Wrestler is that far ahead of the field. 149-

  32. It’s always possible, but the only two schools that would be more geographically remote would be Alaska and Hawaii, and they have the ocean. It is a special acquired taste to enjoy a region that even many red blooded heartlanders find tiresome. Southern Illinois is a booming metropolis comparatively.
