  1. Kennedy has one year of eligibility left. As to this farcical post, first we can let Gabe Arnold speak for himself: The most logical way this played out, to me (and this is without insider info) 1. Gabe, Kennedy, and Brands all want to go 174 in the offseason, and all are healthy. 2. Brands at that point was beating the other two, so Gabe makes the decision early to go up. 3. Kennedy is small for 174, let alone 184 so that's not viable for him. 4. The presumption was Brands and Kennedy would battle it out for 174, but most people thought Brands was the favorite in that match up. 5. Brands gets hurt, so Kennedy can slide in to that spot. Arnold is already up at 184 and doing well. Brands is injured, so he can't be counted on to bump up in that scenario, which would have allowed Arnold to come down and challenged Kennedy. 7. Brands is out for most of the season; Kennedy wrestles well against lesser competition; Gabe does pretty well at 184, but not lights out. 8. Kennedy meets some of the tougher guys, and the results start to dry up; Brands is cleared, and is coming back. Now this is all deductive reasoning, but it all makes sense. And no, I don't think Gabe was placed at 184. I think it's very likely RS freshman Gabe Arnold was struggling to beat a healthy former 5th place finisher at the NCAAs, so he decided to go up (and will come back down next year).

  2. Just ask him. Hey Angelo, what is your ceiling at NCAAs this year:

  6. People wrestle Starocci slow and cautious because his positioning and hand fighting is insane

  7. Good god. Gents, I am sorry my sarcasm is difficult to read, since it is in text Also, sorry Turk. I was being snarky because 3 pages of this thread were because folks wanted Ferrari to be called for stalling, despite scoring the only offensive points and taking the only shots of the match... regardless of the preference of being on one's knees...

  8. I belive nhs67 was being sarcastic and making fun of the Iowa hater with that comment. Big gritty win by Ferrari! Pull his shirt and give him two more shots at starocci and a chance to become a legend in the sport. Who knows, if the stars align perfectly for Iowa maybe they can compete with Penn State for 1st place. Ayala, Parco, Teemer, Caliendo, Ferrari and Buchanan could all make the finals. Lilledahl and Davis could both miss the podium, Kasak is banged up, and Kerk seems to be mia lately. Iowa should take their shot now. They don't get any closer to winning next year. They lose Parco, teemer and Buchanon.

  9. Anyone else think the potentially dangerous call in the SV part of the Plott-Ferrari match was rather quick and perhaps unnecessary. I would like to see the sequence again, but it appeared to me that Plott was close to the TD and could have worked for it or maybe gotten it with the 3 second exposure rule. The ref seemed to be calling most everything quick and tight

  11. 89.9% still higher than all but four wrestlers against any competition. For the guys want to stick to this "oh, he can't do it against the top guys" narrative, that has not been the case this year. His only non-bonus was against a guy who spent a disproportionate amount of time out of bounds. It turns out that it takes two to tango. Edit: If you limit it to just top 50 wrestlers, Starocci is 8 for 9, or 89.9% (as mentioned above). That drops him down to......well, it does not drop him down. He is still third on the list. But what if we limit it to top 33 guys, likely tournament qualifiers, well at 83.3% (5 of 6) he drops to....again, he does not drop. Still third.

  13. The amount of wishcasting and stretching some of you have to do to get to your fantasies about Iowa falling off a cliff are insane. As to PK having a higher ceiling than Brands...based on what? I've said this multiple times and in multiple places: They've each been to two NCAA tournaments. Brands took 5th once and went 1-2 once. Kennedy made the bloodround once and made the R16 once. Kennedy has one single bonus point in his two trips, over a clearly injured Phil Conigliaro, Brands has no bonus wins. If you look at the list of their wins, and try to decide who has better wins, it's not even close. Kennedy's best wins, by far, are over Edmond Ruth and Cam Amine (which was reversed at NCAAs). Brands has wins over Dustin Plott (twice), Chris Foca, Peyton Mocco, Edmond Ruth, and Ethan Smith. It's pretty clear that Nelson has had the better career and if reasonably healthy is the better choice.

  14. The idea that Brands was out there just to save the major might hold more water if we hadn't seen Kennedy wrestle Hamiti twice and keep it to a decision both times. It's pretty clear to me they're trying to get as much data about Nelson as they can before they have to decide.

  15. Brands at the press conference usually says, "we're going to put the best team on the mat", it shifted to "we're going to put the team on the mat that makes the most sense given all the circumstances"

  16. Aren't twins (the Brands) almost by (biological) definition a conspiracy of sorts since they shared the same breath in the womb and probably will continue to do so (in a broad sense) until the tomb? Conspire: literally "to breathe together," from com/con "with, together" + spirare "to breathe"

  17. 100 percent stalling. It is also extremely difficult for the other wrestler to attack or be offensive, so it slows down the entire match. It is comparable to a bottom wrestler bellying out or curling up not to get turned. Ayala wrestles from his knees sometimes. Dake has used it in freestyle. I think both Ferraris use it because they are taller and their legs are exposed. I bet both would get taken down a lot more if they weren't allowed to stall. It can be effective as a stall tactic, but it should be called stalling.

  18. Or the Brands could develop a 197 instead of poaching another teams.

  20. I understand the argument of dropping to a knee being stalling but the match last night is a poor choice to illustrate dropping to a knee as stalling. Ferrari was the more offensive wrestler. I disagree that simply going to a knee is stalling. Wrestlers can stay offensive while on one knee.
    2 points
  21. It's stalling. When dropping to a knee a wrestler is avoiding engagement and taking a defensive position. If someone backs up throughout the match and likes to fire off shots when getting to the edge would you say that also is not stalling?

  22. Jimmy, not knocking you for this thread but I think it's too soon. WKN has great points and I agree with his take but the problem is the dual is so fresh and a lot of posters on this forum are too emotional to have this conversation yet

  23. I think dropping to a knee when not in contact with the opponent should be stalling. Or at least there should be a count before stalling is called. I also think the count should be cumulative for that AND for grasping an ankle while on top.

  29. I think you guys have limited imaginations! He's a Jr A 17-year-old who is cutting to Wrestle 215. We're not talking about a 195 moving up like Mirasola. Then you look at his build? I wouldn't be surprised if he's 6'5 by the time he steps on the mat for Okie State(he looks 6'4-6'5 right now to my eye). And you look at his build...Wrestling other 215s, he looks like he's awkwardly bent over because he's got that big thick back and he just uncoils with those long arms. Kid looks like he can tie his shoes without bending over. THAT is going to make his offense a LOT easier to get to without nearly as much risk at the next level. He's longer than Keuter and thicker through the chest/back and Ben Keuter, who...lets be clear, is a blue-blue chip recruit who is simply NOT dominant yet as a guy who has only Wrestled 1 full year of College Wrestling, but is still competitive. So I think he's bigger, I think he's got more room to grow and I think you're underselling what Ben Keuter is. But I think Ross is bigger, longer, he's got room to add a lot more weight. Most importantly, the way he coils up and explodes, it's just too easy. And he's not diving in on a head inside shot and working to finish, he's finishing it cleanly like Jordan Burroughs or he's out of there. The shoulder injury? He's going to a coach who is a pretty good point of reference on how to rehab a shoulder injury(though...I suspect he'll be beyond that well before he gets to Stillwater. And shoulder rehab can actually make you stronger, make the supporting muscles stronger. My shoulder was MUCH stronger 12 months after reconstructive surgery than it was just prior when it was slipping in and out(no silly lethal gun having to pop it back in, but you can feel it). Go back and look at Greg Kerkvliet at the same age. He wasn't more physically imposing than Ross and I don't think he's near the athlete...and he's been one helluva College Wrestler. This kid moves different than any HWT we've seen in a while. Maybe since McMullen from Northwestern who wrestled at Wyoming Seminary years back, but if memory serves, he was not nearly as long and didn't have the same frame. I'm a big Baseball fan. I like following the prospects as much as anyone. You look at a 16/17 year old pitcher from the DR or a HS Jr/SR and the key word is 'projection.' How much...projection do they have left. When Stephen Mocco got to College, he had very little. He was great as a Freshmen, great as a Sr, but he didn't improve much(there was only so much he could). I'd argue Ross has an enormous amount of projection available. I think you're going to get a 6'4-6'5 250-260 pound HWT with RARE quickness. Now...if you're a Michael Mocco fan, well...yeah, no kidding. You don't HAVE to pick PJ Duke or Marcus Blaze just yet, but here again, I'd say Ross has more room to grow and improve than Mocco, though, to be fair, I think he's got room to grow as well. But...I'll plant my Flag on Deshaun Ross and if he stays healthy...*and NOT because he's had some minor injuries in HS, that's...the norm these days. But just because if he is all in on Wrestling, I think he could be something nearly unprecedented. Stephen Neal-ish?

  31. Some of the possible semifinals at NCAAs might prove be more exciting than the finals. Perhaps it could be like football, where the matchups before the Super Bowl are more competitive or interesting than the final game. Hendrickson vs. Kerkviliet Haines vs. Hamiti or KOT Barraclough vs. Caliendo Buchanan/Barr/Ferarri (some combination) -------------- Bartlett/Mendez/Alirez (some combination) Keckheison vs. McEnally Shapiro/Kasak/Teemer (some combination) Van Ness vs. Lovett (redux) Robinson/Figueroa/Ramos (some combination)

  34. Ferrari is much more active from his knees against Plott than he was Starocci. That doesn't look like stalling to me (if being consistent, since his brother won a title as a true frosh that way as well). That said, in a different style anywhere else but the USA it is immediately called.

  35. I'm in favor of a five count for dropping to a knee. Shoot in five, get up before 5 or get called for stalling.

  38. Comments from huge anti musk/trumpers hold little value. No matter what they do you will be unhappy. To fast!!!! To slow!!!! Not enough!!! It’s like making whoopie to a bipolar woman. with that said analysis paralysis is a thing in corporate America. They often move horribly slow. The government is worse. Sometimes you have to over cut and re hire your mistakes with the goal of progress. keep going musk …. doing something is far better than the status quo of putting your head in the sand and raising taxes
