  3. I get that Burroughs may be too old now, but lets not pretend that he couldn't of won a challenge tournament to make a team after 2011, he just didn't have to. He sent Dake and Taylor to different weight classes. These are just the list of guys in the challenge tournament which always has multiple time NCAA champs. If JB loses it will be to to father time, not because he had to go through a bracket with Jarrett Jacques in it.

  6. Until we see Division I de-emphasize conference affiliations across the board, any format that fractures a conference-based structure is a death sentence, IMO. That being said, I like where you're going with it @killdozer, providing balance and logic to the topic - which we know isn't something we always like to apply to the sport.

  15. PAC 12: 1. Can wrestle with 4 teams as a conference for two years - but they only get the champion as an AQ and the rest fall into at large bids. So technically the conference is not done. 2. With the temporary merger with the MW for football, it is possible that AirForce and Wyoming move to the Pac 12 conference for wrestling. There are rumblings that some Big 12 teams are not happy with the conference. 3. The teams could all join the Big 12 for wrestling creating a logical East and West division (as noted by someone else). 4. Will Little Rock stay or join a conference closer to home? That's a good question. 5. As mentioned before, there are rumblings of teams not being happy in the Big 12. Is it possible there is an exodus of a couple of teams? IMO (as well as a majority of people) there are teams that should leave and connect to the Pac 12 as a Western conference - such as UNC, Utah Valley, Wyoming, Air Force, Cal Baptist.

  16. Most of us are happily clueless—ignorance is bliss. Now that it is known, it cannot be unknown. It's not just one day—over 100 days are recognizing a tiny percentage of the population. This seems unreasonable. https://twitter.com/JonSchweppe/status/1774199221895254125 But then again... who knew there were so many parent holidays? https://nationaltoday.com/parents-holidays/ I'm the bitter guy who finds holidays are actually forced shopping days. I'd rather have 100 days of Thanksgiving than any shopping, sexual choice, or whatever weird days people want to celebrate.

  17. I believe Pac12 gets an exception next year and wrestles with 4 teams and only an AQ per weight, no other allocation.

  18. It's a bad look for wrestling in general. MMA/UFC is half WWE, the false bravado, the calling people out. Bo is brining that into his life. It may be a needed piece of his career, now, but it's not necessary in wrestling. And Starocci saying he's going to end Boroughs career... It's all moving to social media click bait.

  21. Penn St has had an amazing run atop of college wrestling. He made his money in the upper weights, pioneering financing and special medical practices. He recruited amazing talent (especially in the upper weights) and for the most part, took them to higher levels and developed the most dominate multi-time champions in recent memory. However, the arms race has been legalized and competition by Michigan, Iowa and other schools is making an impact - the field has been leveled. Cael still owns the coaching advantage and will win ties. Cael also is a younger coach beating out the old blue bloods of Smith, Brands and Ryan. Over the next 5 years, these three coaches will likely turn over to the likes of Askren, Taylor, Burroughs, Snyder, Dake....Iowa style will be reinvented, recruiting against an aging John Smith will end, and who knows what happens at Ohio State, but the money and facilities are in place. Penn State has now had to dip into the portal instead of its recruiting prowess and talent development. Casey Cunningham likely retires after his son finishes in 5 years. After this olympic cycle, we will see elite athletes make their move. Askren to Wisconsin, Taylor + Dake to Iowa and Burroughs officially on staff at Penn to take over the ivy league. These big time coaching changes will spread the recruits around and level the playing field. These changes will hurt Penn State and benefit Ohio State the most, not because it is getting the next best set of recruits but because Penn State will drop down to sub 100 points which then makes them beatable.

  22. Just joking about the blue colored glasses people on this board that don’t see anything other than their Iowa hatred. I’m shocked 0 discussion occurred about Cstar’s wrestling IQ in injuring himself. Secured the tech fall…. Against a team they beat what like 43-0 (I didn’t look it up). Putting your knee in that position is pretty silly if you think about it. Take the tech and move on.

  25. ULR wants to join the Big XII and my guess is Oregon State would want to for all sports. I think what may happen is when Tarleton State joins D-I. They make the WAC which has Utah Valley, Tarleton State and Cal Baptist in the conference. Then have the Cal teams join in Bakersfield and Cal Poly. Then possibly Wyoming, Northern Colorado and Air Force join to make the WAC. So it would be WAC- Air Force, Cal Baptist, Cal Poly, CSU-Bakersfield, Northern Colorado, Tarleton State, Utah Valley, Wyoming Big XII - Iowa State, Little Rock, Missouri, North Dakota State, Northern Iowa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon State, Northern Iowa, West Virginia Or what I would like just add all to the Big XII. An 18 team conference. Also, I think Morgan State will join the EIWA before either the MAC or the SoCon

  26. Obviously your point is still valid, but did Burroughs have to go through a bracket in 2017 after losing at the olympics? I think we saw a realistic view of what Burroughs has left last year vs Marstellar. He is certainly not my favorite to even make the finals against Dake, but if you aren't on your game he will get you. If he makes the finals it will be from championship experience.

  27. This was a great read and brought back memories of a high school teammate that was one of our team captains and totally blind. Regardless of his handicap, he was just one of the boys on the team and one hell of a sense of humor. I can remember one particular incident when one of my teammates came into the locker room and asked if anyone had seen "so and so?" This voice pipes up from the row over, "I saw him walk by just a minute ago!" Recognizing the voice, I broke out in a big belly laugh. Mike had been a source of motivation to me when I started wrestling as he accomplished so much regardless of his handicap and always positive and encouraging. After HS, Mike enrolled at the University of Missouri where he completed his undergraduate degree and then Law degree and then went home to the Raytown area and opened a law practice. He has continued to practice law over 40 years and has served as a municipal judge. He has also been active holding various leadership positions on local charities and civic organizations. I couldn't tell you what his win and loss record was while he was a HS wrestler, but as a contributing member of our society, he was 100-0. He too, was one of my life heroes.

  30. Yeah, Snyder is an anomaly. I'm happy to admit I am wrong. Did Bastida and Davison weigh less than 230? And what did Caesar weigh? Aside from Snyder, we don't usually see college heavyweights go down to 97kg. Again, happy to admit I am wrong here, but I can't think of anyone. Even if you are small heavyweight, you commit to staying big and don't go down to 97kg. I hope Carroll looks great next week. I am a fan, I just thought he would be an immediate threat at heavyweight next year with a lot of guys graduating.

  31. Seth is great at this stuff. i just can't stand that cadence of talking that is ubiquitous on youtube vids. ughh. nails on a chalkboard. why! i wrestled with his oldest brother, Andy. And middle brother Matt was as good as a high school wrestler as i've ever seen. he absolutely torched Darrell Vasquez the year Vasquez won his 3rd or 4th title in CA. watching Matt in practice was so much fun. he was electric.

  33. Stephon Breedlove was one of my first mentors out of law school. I wanted to help the disabled and those who were considered poor. I met him at Advocacy Inc. in Lubbock. He was a great inspiration. He did not let the difficulties of not being able to see distract him. He amazed me with his knowledge of the law; he had to know by reading braille (now considered outdated by technology). The technology we have today has gone leaps and bounds since 1996. He told me about swimming competitions where he had to be hit on the hit to know that he was about to hit the wall. He was very competitive. He loved his wife who was blind also. And she was beautiful. One year, he wanted a good Christmas tree and asked me to help him pick it out so the salesman did not cheat him on an ugly tree. I asked why he wanted to put lights on a tree and decorate a tree. He wanted to repeat decorating a tree like what he had his whole life from a loving family. And he said the lights on the tree make it smell like the pine tree it is. He was a remarkable person and wonderful person.

  36. The thing I like about Cayden and Crosby on "Clash of Combat", is that they are the same age and going through the same grind (albeit at the Division 2 level) as the college wrestling stars they interview. So there is a more familiar, casual, sometimes goofy, and candid conversational vibe about it rather than the interviewee acting like he or she is talking to some media figure. It's college wrestlers talking to other college wrestlers and it's pretty unfiltered. A good example was when they just hung out on Real Woods' front porch and shot the shit for an hour. Still, the best wrestling podcast I've ever heard was the multi-part "Wrestling Changed My Life" show where they talked about Northern Iowa NCAA champ Tony Davis' VERY rough backstory in Chicago. That was eye opening, and unique storytelling for a sport that historically has stronger ties to predominantly white rural and suburban locations.

  37. It’s more accurate to say that Easter fell on Trans Day of Visibility. Only one of them is on the same day every year. TDV is always on March 31st. Easter falls between late March and late April and is different every year. If you are legitimately upset about this, you are a giant baby. I’m assuming this is why @Husker_Du was crying on twitter again?

Then went to Christiansburg high school just outside of Blacksburg and turned into a nationally ranked program. Then took VT from a near last place team finish at NCAA’s to a trophy team. Now he’s got the cyclones clicking on all cylinders
