Put on your finest singlet and get ready to walk the red carpet. It is award show season at Intermat. Gas up your private jet, sit in your limo waiting to make your entrance, and then be prepared to lecture the rest of us about greenhouse gases. There Is No Team in I Presenting our first award tonight is a man who is all about team. Because he always puts the team first (or The Lord, it alternates) opening the envelope is our very own A.J. Ferrari. A.J.F.: And the winner is...me, I am the ultimate winner. I am number one on each of my hands. But for some reason this piece of paper says @MLB9 and @Dogbone. Who the hell are those guys? Well, they are the Intermat celebrities who came closest to nailing the final team score. At 6-28, they each were within a point of perfection. The Happy Valley Insider folks covered themselves in glory as well. On the flip side, you would have to have been nuts to pick Iowa keeping this one close. And so we have a lobotomized @Mr. PeanutButter tied with a crazy @crzyctldy at the bottom of the heap. But good news, an HVI poster takes the overall "lead" here. Something to work on for next year? Details Matter But before you start with the victory laps let's talk about process. How you got there matters. After all, what is a team score, but the sum of a bunch of individual scores. On that front we have a different set of winners. Take a bow @Perry for having the smallest absolute error across all ten matches. @Interviewed_at_Weehawken takes runner up while @CHROMEBIRD and @Truzzcat round up the balance of the podium positions. Visionaries (aka Know It Alls) Yeah, but too much details is for nerds. All I need to know is who got the most matches correct? This is clearly the most important category by a long, long way. I don't need to do any fancy pants math to tell either. All I need to do is look at the illustrious list of luminaries who got 9 of 10 calls correct. We like to argue a lot on these here boards, but I think there is one thing that is beyond dispute, these dudes/dudettes know wrestling. Back to the Math, NERD Putting it all together. If we reduce all of this to ranks and average the ranks we get a new rank. As rank as the concept of all that math may be to some of you, you will just have to hold your noses as we crown our champion. The straightest shooter among us took aim at, and hit, the bully's eye. Congratulations to @Interviewed_at_Weehawken for being the most comprehensively correct. Now @nhs67, we may need to have a word. Thank you everyone (also receiving votes @Barracuda141, @Le duke, @Eagle26, @Pinnacle, @JimmyBT, @Pish, @1032004, @ionel, @PortaJohn, @VakAttack, @Gus, @TylerDurden, @BIGTENFANBOY, @TheDFP, @fishbane, @flyingcement, @BAC, @Jimmy Cinnabon) for participating.9 points

I'm no Iowa fan....but from Stanford to Iowa last year Woods improved. He went from NQ and 6th at Stanford to going undefeated and losing in the finals last year to Allirez. Last year he had a lot of good top 10 wins, even destroying Hardy in the semis. To say he didn't improve from Stanford to last year is inaccurate. This year is a different story. He has definitely regressed at this point in the season as compared to last year. The only way he could have not regressed from last year was to be an undefeated NCAA champ. I don't think he will, but If he runs his way through the B10 tournament and NCAA to win it, did he still regress?6 points

No one thought Wally Pipp, one of the best power hitters of the dead ball era, would lose his starting spot to Lou Gehrig just because he had a headache one day. After tonight's Rutgers dual we have to ask, will Starocci lose out to Barraclough? Will Kerkvliet lose out to Cochran? After all Cale has no loyalty to anyone. Just ask Nevills. How did I do @Jimmy Cinnabon?5 points

First I saw this document on the NCAA site but it has all the dates for rankings releases https://ncaaorg.s3.amazonaws.com/championships/sports/wrestling/d1/men/2023-24D1MWR_ChampionshipsTimeline.pdf Feb. 15 - 2nd Rankings/First RPI Feb. 29 - 3rd Rankings/Second RPI (conference allocations released) Mar 11-13 - release of at-large bids I think in the past brackets came out on a Wednesday a week and a half before the tournament which would be March 13.5 points

Two fantastic interviews. Thoughtful questions, thoughtful answers. No one treats it like a burden. Thanks for sharing these. With the way Ryan speaks and the respect he shows the media, it is easy to see why he is an effective recruiter.5 points

There's been some good discussion here. And then there's the bunch of low effort bad faith posters, including @BIGTENFANBOY who, contrary to his handle, isn't actually a fan of wrestling, as evidenced by the fact that he only ever visits to bash on Iowa. Decided to crawl out of your little hole a little early this year, eh? There's also @Le dukewho makes approximately 60.9% of their posts about Iowa (ex lover spurn you for a hawk?). Have you checked HVI? You'd fit right in. Several other posters have piled on but otherwise there have been some really good observations and ideas shared. I doubt anyone from the Iowa program reads these boards but I know the staff is aware of the overall online chatter. Here's hoping that, just as the Brands' changed their recruiting philosophy, they continue to adapt and strive to elevate the program to the next level. Personally, I'd be interested in some new assistants.3 points

Keep in mind there are six of them this year, under various names...(the Cowboy Shootout at Wyoming, the Last Chance Open at Iowa State, the F&M Scramble at Franklin & Marshall, the National Collegiate Open in Smyrna, Delaware, the Patriot Last Chance Open at George Mason, and the Wildcat Open at Davidson)3 points

Metcalf to Gilman - "Once you leave the bubble you will understand" Years later Gilman to Metcalf - "I apologize, and you were right. I get it now." That right there explains the problem at Iowa. As for the Iowa/PSU comparision... Iowa gets constantly compared to PSU because theyre constantly comparing themselves to PSU. If they would focus on imdproving themselves and being the best versions of themselves, maybe they would catch PSU. Instead theyre focused on and obsessed with chasing PSU. They bring this mindset on themselves.3 points

Did any one person get more airplay than Ms Swift? Perhaps Mahomes, Kelce and the SF QB and their long haired receiver. What a circus. Good game in the end and Taylor was happy so what more could anyone in the world want? mspart2 points

This tourney tends to feature back ups plus anyone who needs to get matches to qualify, or bump their win %, for seeding purposes. The back ups are there to be fodder for the starters who need to up the match count or win %. In the past Dresser has arranged the brackets so that starters do not hit until late in the bracket, even though this is blatantly against the rules. And if by then they have enough matches or win %, they forfeit. It is a very cynical "tournament".2 points

A college kid at a YMCA asked me when boys become men. I said 'Well, 25 is when boys get cheaper car insurance, which matches the rough age when the rational brain is fully formed.' The kid said but 'what about these 50-year-old boys?' Well, for me, my first mental transition was about six months after my dad died; I switched from being dependent to being individually accountable and self-responsible at 20 years of age. The second was after marriage when finding out my wife was pregnant. A man contributes positively to his family's well-being and sets an example for others in his community. A sampling of character is being present, supportive, awareness, admitting faults, continuously learning, giving, patience, respecting, and financial responsibility.2 points

You are not wrong about NU being one hiccup away from not having a men’s wrestling team. They provide the bare minimum to all of their sports as it stands. Although they do know that Football pays the bills. As for all others they( coaches)are treated like a step child. And athletes alike. As far as IU, as bad as the program got it still resonated with AD to finally change coaching and is starting a comeback of sorts from the dumpster fire. I’m here to say there is a pretty good following in Bloomington indiana. Don’t think is going to get dropped anytime soon.2 points

And Dave Schultz, Gary Bohay (aa ASU and world fs silver), the older Kistler brothers (multiple aa, ASU and Iowa), Pat O'Donnell (aa Cal Poly). A very strong team, then the program was cancelled after the 1980 season2 points

It's a combination of factors. Several new faces in the lineup, a couple of veterans growing into their weights, Coleman as coach (if you watch the duals he's got a notepad and is making notes), Caldwell promoted to coach, RTC and NIL started rolling this past offseason, changes to training methods, new facilities, two sets of warring brothers (Ferraris and Mastros) gone. Personally I'm just happy to see them doing well again - top five is definitely where the Cowboys like to be. 3rd in 2019, 2020 lost to covid, 3rd in 2021, and then a couple of rebuilding/ohnowebetterchangesomethingsquick years in 2022 and 2023. People were mad about the money but now they're mad about the timeline: it appears that PSU was doing the RTC and fundraising years before it was actually allowed by the NCAA. So teams like the Cowboys/Hawkeyes/everybody else were still leaning on the allotted 9.9 scholarships per season while PSU was using millions of private dollars to bring in elite college & HS wrestlers, train them with Olympians, and promise them jobs after graduation. The NCAA did eventually change their rules to allow all teams to do this, but PSU essentially got a several year head start and then also avoided sanctions when their actions came to light. This is just what I've gathered as a casual and interested fan of D1 wrestling, not trying to drum up rage or anything.2 points

Imo, the whole "get out of the Iowa bubble" thing is about folks escaping the grinding beatdown "everyone's got it in for us" culture. It even permeates a good portion of the Iowa fanbase... PSU gets all the breaks, Carl cheats, our guys are afraid, the refs hate us, everyone we wrestle is stalling. It gets tiresome. You can't fuel a program on hatred and blame.2 points

Nice update from Sasso and Tom Ryan yesterday. He's recovering and feels like he's at about 60%, has had surgery on his back, leg, intestines, who knows what else... patched up with screws and other hardware. Working his way back to a possible return to the lineup next year. The neural pathways from his brain to his left leg aren't what they used to be, so Sammy's figuring out how to wrestle with one leg while he works on regaining responsiveness in that limb. Bigger picture, you can see how this whole ordeal has shifted his perspective on things. Dude is full of positivity and gratitude and determination to not let it bring him down. He'll go pretty far in life with that attitude whether he returns to the mat next year or not.2 points
