Minnesota doesn't do wrestle-offs, but they had simulated matches last night in the wrestling room. At the contested weights, Blaine Brenner seems to be the favorite at 165, and Garret Joles and Gabe Nagel pretty even at 197. The true freshman class looked outstanding, and while I don't see any of them starting, I expect most of them to get close to the allowed five competitions in.3 points

No official score kept, limited room out of bounds, and running clock. Ref's were present this year but basically just practiced saying TD3 and talked about the rule changes and points of emphasis to the guys wrestling. The Gopher's coaches set the lineup based on early season open tournament results and past performance.2 points

every single wrestler that came out of that class had a chance at 5. no one is in a position to do it except for him. he could end up with 3 more NCAA titles than Dan Gable. wrap your brain around that.2 points

Holy Moly! In just one week I've seen sewer systems get attacked and now douche bags. As a collective group we should all appreciate sanitary systems that improve the quality of the things we love!2 points

What are your stipulations? NCAA finish? All Americans? Champs? Dual wins? Dual Rank. Conference titles? Academic finish tied to placement? APR? Lots of ways to quantify an answer - just wondering where I should start with the data mining.2 points

As clarification for anyone reading, the Pan Am Games and the Pan Am Wrestling Championships are two different things. The Pan Am Wrestling Championships are used to qualify a country at a weight for the Olympics. That is scheduled for March 6-10, 2024 in Acapulco. The Pan Am Games, starting Nov. 1, are like a mini Olympics for the western hemisphere. There are 45 other sports in addition to wrestling. Results here stand on their own. They are not part of Olympic qualifying.2 points

We are living in some very strange (SAD ) times. The amount of hate and anger mixed some the highest severe mental illness IN THE WORLD might be one of the contributing factors. My son who is an officer in the military just had one of his soldiers commit suicide. He was young with a wife and two young children. He had suffered an injury that may have ended his career and he was struggling with that. So many questions . Not many answers.2 points

Right now I don't think they're really doing much this year beyond informal room evaluations of the guys. All the high-level graduate transfers are probably automatic starters, and the remainder of the weights appear set except perhaps for 197. For now, look forward to the MSU Open in a few weeks to see how the new freshmen and everyone else is panning out.2 points

Look at this photo. Brooks at 184 is noticeably shorter than O'Toole 165, Starocci 174 and 6" shorter than Nino Bonacorris at 197. Parris may be close to a head taller than Brooks. O'Toole is listed at 6'0 so I estimate that Brooks is no taller than 5'10. A typical 197 pounder like Tanner Sloan is 6'2. Brooks is amazing and strength won't be a problem at 197 but I can't help but wonder if his lack of length will be an issue against the longer 197 pounders.1 point

Based on the latest roster (https://www.themat.com/news/2023/october/26/mota-pettis-golston-garrett-added-to-u-s-roster-for-pan-american-games) we are sending a rep to the Pan American Games at every Olympic weight in all three disciplines, except for 67 kg Greco. Do we really not have someone on the ladder we can send there?1 point

What weight do we expect Max McEnelly and Gavin Nelson at? Salazar is at 184 which is McEnelly ideal weight. How is Tyler Wells comparatively to Jake Gliva?1 point

We fell short in the last couple Pan Ams at that weight. At the 2022 Pan Am Championships at 67 kg, the medals went to Colombia, Brazil, the Dominican Republic and Peru. Most recently, at the 2023 Pan Am Championships, the medals went to Cuba, Chile, Colombia and Ecuador. Only the winner at the 2021 Junior Pan Am Games qualified his country. The winner in that contest was from Cuba.1 point

Does the Second Amendment protect citizens' right to bear arms for self-defense? Yes, read the history documented in these BRIEFs OF AMICUS CURIAE CENTER of petitioners (NEW YORK STATE RIFLE & PISTOL ASS’N) of respondents (CITY OF NEW YORK) Key points Self-defense is long recognized: Aristotle stated that “arms bearing” was an essential aspect of each citizen’s proper role (300 BC) On the Law of War and Peace by Hugo Grotius (1625) It has already been proved that when our lives are threatened with immediate danger, it is lawful to kill the aggressor if the danger cannot otherwise be avoided: an instance, as it has been shown, on which the justice of private war rests. We must observe that this kind of defense originates from the principle of self-preservation, which nature has given to every living creature, and not from the injustice or misconduct of the aggressor. Wherefore though he may be clear of guilt, as, for instance, a soldier in actual service, mistaking my person for that of another, or a madman in his frenzy, or a man walking in his sleep, none of these cases deprive me of the right of self-defense against those persons. For I am not bound to submit to the danger or mischief intended, any more than to expose myself to the attacks of a wild beast. John Locke wrote (1690) For no Man, or Society of Men, having a Power to deliver up their Preservation, or consequently the means of it, to the Absolute Will and arbitrary Dominion of another; whenever any one shall go about to bring them into such a Slavish Condition, they will always have a right to preserve what they have not a Power to part with; and to rid themselves of those who invade this Fundamental, Sacred, and unalterable Law of Self-Preservation, for which they enter'd into Society. And thus the Community may be said in this respect to be always the Supream Power, but not as considered under any Form of Government, because this Power of the People can never take place till the Government be dissolved. The 2nd amendment was ratified in 1791 and based on prior understanding Of the nine state constitutional protections for the right to bear arms enacted immediately after 1789, at least seven unequivocally protected an individual citizen’s right to self-defense. This is strong evidence that the founding generation understood the right to bear arms as part of the fundamental right of self-defense. In the first published appellate decision on the right to bear arms, Bliss v. Commonwealth (1822), an opinion of the Kentucky Court of Appeals (then the state's highest court), the court invalidated a state statute prohibiting concealed carrying of weapons. The court ruled that this prohibition infringed upon the "right of the citizens to bear arms in defense of themselves and the state.1 point

So let me get this straight. If you kill civilians, that is a war crime? Which war has been fought in the last 100 years that has not resulted in civilian deaths? Civilian death and property destruction is the main consequence of modern war. Israel is not targeting civilians. There is no other armed force that I know of that tries to avoid civilian deaths like the IDF. Perhaps US troops do similar. Certainly not Russian troops. So when Israel attacks, they have warned everyone what they are going to do. If civilians are present, they either were prevented from leaving or they are not really civilians. I see this as Israel having done their due diligence to prevent civilian deaths. Please show where Hamas has ever taken this tactic with regard to Israeli civilians. This is just one way to differentiate the tactics used and the intent of the two sides here. In my opinion, Hamas did not go to all out war, they went as far as to initiate an initial skirmish with civilians, not against armed forces. That is a war crime. Mowing down 270 youth at a music/dance get together is a crime, not just a war crime. Burning alive civilians in their houses is a crime, not just a war crime. What did they think would be the response from Israel? Did they think that Israel would roll over? I don't think so. I think they knew the response would be punishing and swift. I think the calculus was that other entities would come to help the fight. Hezbollah is certainly answering that call in a small way. But they were roundly condemned for their brutal and inhuman actions. And now Israel is prepared to take out Hamas as an entity. Is there a reason not to? Hamas' attacks have been constant over the years from Gaza. They had a sort of truce going on and apparently we and Israel relaxed about any violence. Then came 10/7. Israel is understandably incensed and their intent to eliminate Hamas now is also understandable. If Israel wanted to destroy civilians in Gaza, why have they historically provided, food, energy and fuel to Gaza? If Gazans and Hamas disarmed, what would be the result? Peace. If Israel disarmed, what would be the result? Annihilation. This again shows the disparate intent of the two. mspart1 point

IMO, Hyping winning a 5th title is a little disingenuous. He just career just happen to fall during an unprecedented event in NCAA history. Does anyone think any of the pervious 4Xer wouldn't have won their 5th title had they magically been granted a 5th year after winning #4?1 point

We should do away with fossil fuels...eventually. The EV and other technologies are unfortunately nowhere near ready to handle all of the transportations/travel needs of modern human society. Largely this is due to the fossil fuel lobbies efforts to hinder advancement in that area, but it is what it is.1 point

Hey, out of curiosity, are there any other countries with national styles of wrestling that have nationals on par with something the size of ncaa’s? I’m thinking of India, Mongolia, Africa, anything like that.1 point

You bring up a very good point, except for one small problem: Iran, Georgia, Azeribijan, Serbia, Hungary, Turkey, and Armenia all finished in the top ten in both styles. Iran was second in both. Azerbijan, the greco champ, finished 5th in FS. US, the champ in FS, finished...........22nd in greco. I realize the resources in these countries make the United States of America look like Somalia, but we might be able to find a dollar or two if we really wanted to put forth the effort, instead of just scrapping it because we aren't good.1 point
