  1. Noel counts for NY. It’s based on where the wrestlers list their hometown. Mark Hall listed Apple Valley, Minnesota, so he counted for them. It’s up to where the athlete (at least in recent years) go. Ed Ewolt started my list in the 1970s and I think he used whatever was listed in the program. Bartlett counts for whatever he lists on his Penn State bio. I do have HS stats dating back about a decade and am working on back filling that data.

  7. I have been to some of the worst shelters - women, children, and homeless. I have had to stay in one during the darkest time of Detroit history. You don't even understand how stupid you are and that is sad. You are making a mountain out of a molehill on one very legitimate and disturbing topic, which is obvious you don't actually care, to justify being a blatant racist that is okay with blatant, systemic racism. All people should fear leaders that share your mindset and morals. You are a racist cunt.

  9. The ILLINI Wrestle-offs had their share of surprises yesterday. We have some of the results--and we think all of the final results--at this link. There's also Super 32 news involving IMAR, Lucas Byrd, Seth Mendoza and a bunch of ILLINOIS lads in the quarterfinals or fighting it out on the backside. Finally, we are spotlighting ILLINI Wrestling Babies. Regular babies are okay, I guess, but ILLINI Wrestling Babies are AWESOME. Okay, we'll divulge a couple of the results: Kannon Webster beat last year's starter at 149, and Braeden Scoles beat the starter at 157 from two years ago. Looks like both the Brawlnagels are taking Olympic redshirt years, and Lucas Byrd is taking a medical shirt. That explains Tony Madrigal's transfer from Oklahoma. According to eyewitnesses, he was fantastic in his wrestle-off. He had to be as Kole Brower is a tough ILLINOIS kid.

  12. Updated to include the Illini. The all redshirt team this year right now would be: 125: Cooper Flynn, Virginia Tech 133: Lucas Byrd, Illinois 141: Andrew Alirez, Northern Colorado 149: Colin Realbuto, Northern Iowa 157: Cesar Alvan, Columbia 165: Dan Braunagel, Illinois 174: Matthew Singleton, NC State 184: Deanthony Parker, Oklahoma 197: Zach Braunagel, Illinois 285: Jacob Bullock, Indiana that's a pretty good team

  20. I have become dumber for having read some posters posts on here....wow. Internet at it's finest...people feel they can say the dumbest most a$$hole, racists things and justify it in their head that it makes sense. How you could correlate the worst word in the English language due to it's meaning and history, with a word that is slang for a women's body part is beyond me. And just as disgusting is to try and use the poor women who have been abused as to way to try and make a point, of which there isn't a point to be made. Sickening

  21. All the school board hoopla on sex Ed is the same argument as CRT was. Mostly imagination and even - hypothetically - if it weren't, it isn't wrong. Just parents who don't know the arse from a hole in the ground. Woodland Park, CO (mentioned above) is an interesting case. They elected some far, far right wing folks to the school board, which is their right. They then said they were going to "flood the zone" with changes so they would get at least some of their changes before law suits could stop them. Most of the carnival barkers at school board meetings can't even do this because it isn't what most of the parents want, plain and simple.

  25. Michigan State - Go Green! Go White! The Spartans have a huge variance as far as what they can be this season. On one hand, they have some strong veterans in their lineup, and a lot of leadership that they can lean on to develop their youth. On the other hand, they’ll have some weights with guys without much experience jumping into the lineup and expected to produce. In my mind, that’s a good thing and I trust the culture on the team to help these guys assimilate into full-time starters and contributors. They have adjusted their approach from a coaching standpoint to really focus on being ready to produce at the right times of the year, and I expect this team to be rounded into form come March. For more recent insight directly from Head Coach Roger Chandler, check out this interview I did with him from 9/25. TOP RETURNERS Chase Saldate had a breakout season last year. His regular season was particularly strong, earning him the fourth seed at the B1G tournament. He ended up dropping his first match at NCAAs, but battled all the way back to the bloodround before finishing up just shy of the podium when he was pinned by Bryce Andonian of Virginia Tech. Saldate tends to wrestle close matches, but when he gets his offense going he’s extremely tough to beat. His top game is as good as almost anyone in college wrestling, and he’s stingy defensively. If he can add a little bit more on his feet, he’ll get on that podium this time around. Caleb Fish needed an at-large bid to make the NCAA tournament last year, but made the most of it by making it to the quarterfinals of a loaded 165 pound weight class. He’s consistently gotten better with each season in the lineup and is referenced regularly as one of the guys who does everything you expect from an athlete. You can expect him to be where he needs to be as a student-athlete, is generally regarded as the toughest guy on the team (reference the interview above), and is going to be as prepared as anyone coming into the year. I expect him to be a consistent presence at 165. Don’t be surprised when he gets a couple “upset” wins in the conference. Layne Malczewski is entering his final year with the Spartans. He was my pick for breakout candidate at 184 last season, and I stand by it! He has battled injuries throughout his career, but he’s been brought up to me by other coaches, which is a good sign that they think about how they are going to approach matches with him. He has a lot of different attacks, is ready to use them all, and is really tall for the weight. In my conversation with him over the summer, he was adding size and is as healthy as he’s ever been. Let’s hope he can stay healthy and really see what he can do. Last Dance Layne! KEY DEPARTURES Rayvon Foley was in the Spartan lineup since his true freshman year. As a sophomore, he was an All-American and was consistently ranked in the top-ten and an All-American threat throughout his career. He didn’t finish his career as strongly as it started, but his contributions to the lineup and leadership will be missed. He reigns as Ann Arbor Pioneer High School’s most successful college wrestler. Peyton Omania, a Greco Senior World Team member in 2021, and another long-term contributor to the team. There is a solid contingent of Greco wrestlers on this team, and Omania’s presence and approach certainly contributed to that interest. He had shown flashes of greatness and was always a dangerous wrestler. Cam Caffey, a fan favorite over the years, held court for the upperweights for his entire career. Starting at 184, he was a B1G finalist in the 2020 season, which had the NCAA tournament canceled. After that year he bumped up to 197. He had huge wins at times, notably beating the eventual NCAA Champion in Max Dean during their dual with Penn State. His career ended at NCAAs last year when he tried to compete with a bad shoulder, an injury he suffered at B1Gs. He intends to continue to compete in freestyle and Greco, but he does leave a big gap at 197 that the Spartans will have to fill. NEWCOMERS Braden Stauffenberg, speaking of Greco, just represented the United States at the U20 Greco World Championships. He was 10-6 in his redshirt season, and will likely be representing the Spartans at 149 pounds this season. Anytime you can get youth and world-level experience into the lineup is a good thing, and I’m excited to see how he steps into this spot. WRESTLER TO WATCH Ceasar Garza stepped into the lineup last season right away. He won the MSU Open Freshman and Sophomore division last season, and became the starter a couple weeks into the season after their planned starter, DJ Shannon (transfer from Illinois), got hurt. He showed some growing pains early, but he also showed growth and improvement as the season went on. This last offseason he went 2-2 in his first major freestyle tournament, and a couple weeks later was an All-American at U23s. He’ll be someone to watch closely. Jordan Hamden another Grego World Team member for the Spartans, as he will represent the United States at U23 Greco Worlds next week. He’s been in the lineup for a while, and showed some flashes, but like I mentioned with Braden above, World Team members don’t happen by accident and I believe that experience and the confidence that comes with it will contribute to a successful season for Jordan. Tristan Lujan had a strong start to the season last year winning the Navy Open and was undefeated up until the finals of the Reno Tournament of Champions where he dropped a 5-2 match to Trevor Mastrogiovanni of Oklahoma State. As the season went on, Lujan lost some steam and had a tough B1G season. However, I believe in Lujan and feel like he’ll be more consistent this season and will end up wrestling in Kansas City at the end of the year. TOP OUT-OF-CONFERENCE DUAL Central Michigan University travels to East Lansing on Friday, February 23rd. This is an in-state rivalry where both teams show up ready to impose their dominance. This dual has implications year in and year out for recruits, NCAA seeding implications, and bragging rights. These duals have been close over the last couple of years with the Spartans coming out on top the last couple of seasons. Both squads have a lot of depth and should match up very well this year making for an exciting out-of-conference battle.

  26. Not only does Northwestern head coach Matt Storniolo sit down with Ryan Holmes to preview the season, but new assistant coach BJ Futrell has also joined the discussion. Each gives their perspective on why a move to Evanston made sense for Futrell and the team. The Wildcat coaches talk about a Northwestern team that has plenty of new faces for 2023-24, along with some veterans in new roles. The two also give their opinion on how the new takedown rules may impact competition this season. For the full interview: Click Here

  36. This pretty much explains it. At the risk of putting an link in and quoting some of it, this explains in very good detail what the current emphasis is. It also is derisive of any opposing view. This is not the complete article, but if you want to read more, click on the link. https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2022/09/how-to-teach-gender-identity-in-schools/671422/ What to Teach Young Kids About Gender Schools should tell children to be themselves. But some districts say too much—and mistake progressive dogma for established fact. By Conor Friedersdorf For the foreseeable future, parents and educators will be grappling with this polarizing question: What, if anything, should prepubescent public-school students be taught about gender identity? “Resources and lesson plans for those who want to teach about gender identity are becoming much more common,” The Washington Post reported in June. “Seven states now require that curriculums include LGBTQ topics. The National Sex Education Standards, developed by experts and advocacy groups, name gender identity as one of seven essential topics, alongside puberty, consent, sexual orientation and other subjects. And the federal government recommends that schools include gender identity in their sex education programs.” The push is to start young. California’s Department of Education urges kindergarten teachers to dispel gender stereotypes, laying groundwork “for acceptance, inclusiveness, and an anti-bullying environment,” because “some children in kindergarten or even younger have identified as transgender.” Some educators favor earlier interventions. The eight co-authors of the 2019 book Supporting Gender Diversity in Early Childhood Classrooms argue that too little emphasis is given to gender identity in the years before age 6, when educators have “a chance to prime all parents for supporting their children’s gender health” and “the opportunity to educate all children about gender diversity and introduce them to role models of a variety of genders.” But a rival faction has reacted by insisting, at the other extreme, that instruction involving gender identity has no place at all in early-childhood education. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a law in March that prohibits public schools from presenting any instruction on gender identity until at least the fourth grade. According to NPR, at least a dozen other states are considering similar legislation. The issue could be a political winner for the Republicans who are pushing it. A recent survey sponsored by the American Federation of Teachers finds that 58 percent of likely voters in battleground states disapprove of the way students are taught about “sexual preference and gender identity.” Asked to explain why, 31 percent said “students are too young for [the] material,” while 27 percent said parents are responsible for teaching it. mspart

A study was commissioned on a nationally representative sample of 1,505 yet-or-recent high school graduates about CRT and Gender Identity topics. The majority of these students shared feedback that they were taught directly at school or told what to think by an adult at school on these topics. https://www.city-journal.org/article/yes-critical-race-theory-is-being-taught-in-schools

  38. Reportedly, here is the Stanford wrestling situation nowadays: ***Three top-5 recruiting classes, a substantial regional training center (RTC) structure and group of athletes, and additional scholarships funded through self-endowment. Meanwhile the wrestlers have an average GPA above 3.5, "exemplifying the balance of academics and athletics for which Stanford stands."*** Meanwhile ACC affiliation will give them annual competitions against some academically motivated universities including (but not limited to) Duke, UNC & U.Va. Unfortunately Ga. Tech. does not presently sponsor wrestling at the NCAA D1 level, but the Yellow Jackets were recently ranked as either the best deal for the tuition dollars or the second best. Meanwhile Cal: Berkeley also does not presently sponsor NCAA D1 wrestling. And I'm not aware that Southern Methodist University (SMU) ever has. But maybe that can change. I think ACC teams will be very happy to have Stanford in their circle of wrestling rivals. As we know, rivalry can be converted into friendship in our great sport of wrestling during the off-season, and beyond. And there is no doubt that folks on each of the ACC's 3 coasts would like to get some experience studying and / or working on AT LEAST one of the other two coasts someday. If only they can afford the travel despite budget cuts... Either way, Rob Koll appears to have left behind a solid base after he inherited a program that was all but extinct. Hopefully he can keep wrestling alive at his alma mater in Chapel Hill, and enable it to increasingly thrive (and hopefully welcome Stanford's entry into the ACC despite UNC's, Clemson's & Florida State's reported prior disapproval).
