I don't think inside information is applicable here. Most people think inside information in the US is about fairness, but it is actually about theft. Using information that does not belong to you to profit in capital markets is the crime. The idea is that it harms capital formation if it is allowed to happen. And capital formation is valuable to an economy. I do not think that applies in any way to betting markets which are not viewed as having a similar importance. I am not aware of any laws that disallow betting based on an information advantage. As a matter of fact it is legal in some jurisdictions to "cheat" at casino games. But it is also legal for casinos to ban you if they think you are doing things like counting cards.4 points

@D3 for LU, @ILLINIWrestlingBlog, @nhs67 Yeoman's work this past week and a half. Thank you for all the commentary, pbp, and info.3 points

Beleniuk just pointed to Crimea on his singlet and pointed to the larger part of Ukraine as if to say "this is ours."3 points

@Jason Bryant Thank you for filling in so many blanks. And for everyone who wasn't in the arena, I got a chuckle from the Serbian announcer. He started out fairly monotone, but the began to mimic JB's more weatern style (or maybe it was a different announcer). Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. But you win the announcing game by pinfall.2 points

Not so fast, my friend. USA will go medal-less in this world championship for Greco-Roman. D32 points

Well, that was quick and unfortunate. I'm out, D3. Thanks for being such a good play-by-play and color commentator!2 points

Nobody is actually providing any good reason why this should be the rule, just that it is the rule. Which is a stupid reason for a rule to exist.2 points

Team placings haven't changed: Azerbaijan 47 followed by Iran 42 and Uzbekistan 37. We're done here... tootles! D32 points

I'm not a greco enthusiast, but the drama is still magnificent to see. D32 points

Confusion here... UWW shows USA/GR w/ 12pts... FLO shows the US w/ 14pts. Obviously both are more than the 7pts I mentioned earlier. I'll wait until it's over... D31 point

Team scores now jive with UWW on Flo. UWW won't update until a weight is completed in their system, but they seem to be in line now.1 point

Agreed as far as needing someone to replace KS at 97kg - we haven't had such a consistently great heavy guy since big Bruce was competing 25 + years ago.1 point

87Kg second set of repechage matches... Ukraine vs Uzbekistan on Mat B, Azerbaijan vs AIN on Mat C. D31 point

The Serbian won on Mat B, 6-0... both the Iranian & Serbian are into their respective bronze medal matches. D31 point

Iran takes it on Mat C, 6-5... leg foul by Hungary prevented him from taking the lead over the iranian. D31 point

A lot of angry Iowa fans on here who have an issue NOT with the fact that an Iowa athlete knowingly broke the rules, but with the fact that the rules exist, or that other schools weren't busted as well...hmmm... It seems your anger is misplaced...1 point

I thought the rumor was Byrd was heading up to 141? That is the opposite direction from 57 KG.1 point

Gambling has the extreme potential to warp incentives for players and coaches due to the close nature of the sports community at colleges. This in turn threatens the trust that fans have that incentives will not be warped into throwing games or throwing scoring attempts or whatever else can be get bet on. Harming that trust threatens reductions in fan base and alumni support as well as negatively impacting school reputation / branding. In addition, I’d like to think that colleges still care, a little, about good character development. Creating an environment that breeds collusion / corruption goes against that goal. Thus the rules. I agree with them and their severity. The rules are extremely easy to abide by.1 point

57 kg - Vito A 65 Kg - Yianni 74 kg - Dake 86 Kg - DT 97 kg Snyder 125 kg - Gable If USAW is still offering the same award from the Living the Dream fund that they offered to JB in 2016 (and I think for Snyder in 2020) then a Gold in Paris could earn Gable $500K - the same would apply to Taylor - That is 10 Xs the amount Gable could have earned at this years WC. I think he is going.1 point

I'm not aware of 1 and 2 being reported anywhere. As to 3, I've already addressed that. Yes, it's the rule, but there's zero reason for it to exist. Again, for no reason. For example, other students at Iowa or Iowa State, even say a football player's girlfriend, would be free and clear to make bets on the respective football teams with the same or better access to that inside information. Finding information to find bad lines is how truly successful sports bettors succeed.1 point

57kg: Arujau - Arujau is just too fast and too technically sound for the field, even a helathy S. Lee 65kg: Lee - Lee has Diakomihalis' number, and now he has shown he can figure McKenna out. He may have been 7th at Worlds, but he was the third best 65 wrestler there. 74kg: Dake - this one worries me a bit. Something looked a tad off to me at Worlds. Is that what it was? Just a tad off. Or is time starting to move in the same direction for Dake as it is the rest of us? 86kg: Taylor - Too big, too strong, too fast for anyone in the world right now, and I do not see that changing in the next year. 97kg: Snyder - I do not see anyone domestically close to Snyder. 125kg: Parris - Parris showed his chops in Belgrade. The real deal internationally and a clear number one domestically. Rumor has it that there is a minor league, pretend wrestler who can challenge him, but for that to happen he would need to get a permission slip signed by his boss.1 point

Greco tournament has been just as nuts as the free. The finals at 97 and 130 just completely bonkers. I feel bad for the people that don’t see Greco for the beauty that it is. You don’t know what you’re missin.1 point

Bronze medal bout... Turkiye's Selcuk Can certainly looks like a certain character from Revenge Of the Nerds: Curtis Armstrong aka Booger. Congrats Boo... er-uh, Selcuk Can in winning the bronze medal! D31 point

I've also started announcing it as Turkiye starting at the 2021 World Championships in Oslo. Czechia also gets the same treatment.1 point

... I see what you did there. From Wikipedia: Turkey adopted its official name, Türkiye Cumhuriyeti, known in US English as the Republic of Turkey or more commonly known as Turkey, upon the declaration of the republic on 29 October 1923. In 2021, however, via the UN, Turkey changed its spelling to Türkiye. You're clever individual... heh, heh. D31 point

Its my understanding that it was the state not the NCAA that did the investigation. The school was presented with the evidence and had to report it to the NCAA Nothing uneven1 point

i think missing one year of eligibility is a fair punishment. anything less than a loss of 1 ncaa tournament is meaningless. i just wish it wasn't their last year of eligibility.1 point

I’m not going to lie, I came into this expecting to click his thread and feel bad for him and think it was ridiculous. Then I got to the part where he said “yeah I knew the rules. I didn’t attend the meeting. I just did it anyways because it’s not a huge deal” and he lost any sympathy I was going to give him. That’s a good PR example of how not to explain your situation to the public.1 point
