  2. Zac Braunagel wins his first-round match against Turkmenistan! He was down early because his failed throw was turned into two for the Turkmen, then he was hit for passivity. Then, Zac went to work wearing out his opponent. He got pushout after pushout until he got his own passivity point, then he hit a four-point throw on the edge. His opponent challenged and lost. Final 8-3 for Zac! He's got a living legend in the next round, the multi-Olympic and World medalist from Ukraine, Zhan Beleniuk. So, he can shock the world or get some repechage action. GO ILLINI RTC!

  5. It never ceases to amaze me that in a sport where 100% of athletes get injured, some do not want to believe it when an athlete says they are injured.

  6. 57kg: Arujau - Arujau is just too fast and too technically sound for the field, even a helathy S. Lee 65kg: Lee - Lee has Diakomihalis' number, and now he has shown he can figure McKenna out. He may have been 7th at Worlds, but he was the third best 65 wrestler there. 74kg: Dake - this one worries me a bit. Something looked a tad off to me at Worlds. Is that what it was? Just a tad off. Or is time starting to move in the same direction for Dake as it is the rest of us? 86kg: Taylor - Too big, too strong, too fast for anyone in the world right now, and I do not see that changing in the next year. 97kg: Snyder - I do not see anyone domestically close to Snyder. 125kg: Parris - Parris showed his chops in Belgrade. The real deal internationally and a clear number one domestically. Rumor has it that there is a minor league, pretend wrestler who can challenge him, but for that to happen he would need to get a permission slip signed by his boss.

  7. Greco tournament has been just as nuts as the free. The finals at 97 and 130 just completely bonkers. I feel bad for the people that don’t see Greco for the beauty that it is. You don’t know what you’re missin.

  12. Nelson Brands is probably in the worst position out of anyone in terms of having to live with this-it is really terrible to think about how this might impact his family relationships. His opening up about the situation was a ballsy thing to do given how awful it makes Iowa athletics and even his uncle and dad look in terms of running a program. Based on his post: 1. He was absolutely right to be banned. He bet on an Iowa sporting event as a D1 athlete at Iowa. That's where the story starts and stops in terms of what is fair punishment. It's the job of the compliance office to make it clear that ANY betting gets you banned, including March Madness pools, fantasy football, etc. With the history of point shaving in NCAA athletics, this simply has to be the rule and there has to be strict enforcement for those who break it. 2. Iowa failed him as an athlete. The fact that he did not realize the punishment for gambling was loss of eligibility (what other punishment can the NCAA provide?), and that he was able to miss a compliance meeting in 2022 suggests Iowa did not succeed in educating their athletes on the NCAA rules. How could somebody whose parents run the program not know that you get banned for gambling? He attended how many years of these meetings and still was not aware of this? I don't see why Brands would lie about not knowing about the consequences of these actions.

  13. @WildTurk, I wrote an article a long time ago about the first Iranian women's team to attend the grappling world championships. They actually won a few medals. This was around the time that "Wrestling Diplomacy" had opened up their country, with American teams traveling to Iran and Iranian teams traveling to America. But the Iranian women never returned. Hardliners in Iran took over, and the politics have gotten chilly. I was hoping with the Women's Revolution in Iran this past year that things would change for wrestling and grappling but so far nothing--although I did see a reference to Iranian women winning a 2019 no-belt championship--whatever that is. As you can see in the picture below, the ladies did wear a hijab, but their faces were uncovered.

  18. 2013 (17) - Jr World gold 2014 (18) - Jr World bronze 2015 (19) - World gold *2016 (20) - Olympic gold *2017 (21) - World gold *2018 (22) - World silver 2019 (23) - World bronze 2020 (24) - Olympic silver 2021 (25) - World silver 2022 (26) - World gold 2023 (27) - World bronze *also won NCAA titles Aside from Snyder earning world-level medals in every year since 2013, including five golds and three silvers, I agree with you. The US just isn't performing at 97kg. Time to put that old dog down. By the time the 2024 Olympics roll around, he'll be 28 and way past his prime. It's really hard to see why there aren't young guys knocking Snyder off. It's not as if you have to be a world-level gold medal contender to beat him. I'm not sure you really thought this one through.

  19. To be honest, one of the worst takes ever on this forum. Dude has medaled in every world/Olympic tournament since 2015, with basically the only thing keeping him from have more golds was the best pound-for-pound wrestler in the world. It would be one thing to say Snyder appears to be slipping a little, but at this point he will still perform better than anyone else we could put out there.

  31. I didn't see Zac's second match against the current Olympic Gold Medalist and previous Olympic Silver and multiple World Championship medalist Zhan Beleniuk of Ukraine because I was busy working on this: But according to Coach Medlin, it was a 1-5 loss for the Brawlnagel that probably tuckered out the Ukrainian. I hope we don't see "Brent Metcalf Syndrome," where you wear out your opponent so much they lose their next round match. Rather, hoping for repechage. Still, you gotta respect the fact that Brawny will put up his best against the best and not lay down. In his last three international matches, Zac has faced two MULTIPLE Olympic and World Medalists, and the cumulative score for both matches is 2 for the good guy and 7 for the bad guys. And he's just starting.

  32. B..b..b..but he's Russian. And on this forum that means he's a lying, doping, evil, Putin-supporting propagandist. Actually, it's quite disgusting, some of the disrespect that we see here. Whether it's Sadulaev, before this tournament recognized as the greatest active freestyle wrestler, suddenly accused of or considered a propagandist, or Tadhudinov, the world champion, an obviously excellent technical wrestler with unbelievable fluidity in movement, tall and strong but certainly NOT musclebound, being accused of doping and looking like Boltukaev. What's wrong with people? I mean, the Iranian fans accept losses, and show great respect for David Taylor, have always loved JB. Why can't you just accept that our guy lost and maybe on that given day their guy was the better wrestler?

  37. Taylor and Dake were committed to continuing their amateur wrestling careers. They kept at it, even when JB was beating them. They had firm goals that they single-mindedly pursued. This is what cultivates greatness. You are too focused on early results. Dake and Taylor didn't get the results in their early freestyle years after finishing the NCAA careers, but can you argue that they haven't done well? Gable Steveson won the Olympics the same year he won NCAAs. He missed Worlds that year, and then, after demolishing the domestic field at hwt. and taking the spot in 2023, he dropped out of Worlds again. This is a pronounced lack of stability. I don't know what's going on in the young man's life, so I will not go so far as to say it's a lack of integrity. There may be issues that I am unaware of. One thing is for sure. He's not stable, as he qualified for Worlds and dropped out. Dake and Taylor have NEVER done that, and they never would.

  38. Colleges are partnering with online sports betting and casinos. They are basically selling their students. But then they are banning students who gamble. I am fine with strong punishments to keep college students away from gambling, but the hypocrisy bothers me.

  40. Oh no don't dare bring that up. 57/65/74/86/97/125 are the chosen weights for a reason. Did you know that John Smith, a legendary American Cowboy from a previous generation, found them inscribed on golden tablets in the ancient caves of Fila. Declaring himself the chosen one, he presented his mythical findings to his deacons at the village of Lausanne, SUI. As a result he was declared a Prophet of United World Wrestling and his lineage leads the Church of Tweener Gripes of Latter Day Weights. The most prominent of his kin, Markus, was recently anointed bishop of one of those Latter Day Weights where his flock presented him with a medal of bronze in the city of Belgrade.
