  1. Lucas Byrd may be known domestically as a 2x All-American but globally he is recognized as an all-time Short King along with his 6'2 Tall Queen https://www.barstoolsports.com/blog/3470025/congrats-to-worlds-cutest-short-king-and-tall-queen-couple-on-graduating-the-university-of-illinois

  5. The Ivy League has this really pretentious rule based on the notion that their student-athletes should be going to college primarily for their education. Many of the ivy leaguers are arrogant enough to think that taking classes at their fancy university is better than doing so at the local community college. Cornell wrestling is out to disprove this by showing that you can go to community college first, and then seven years later graduate with the same degree.

  6. In 1929 Oklahoma State's 115 pounder, Dell Shockley, entered a three man bracket, got a first round bye (yep, he got a bye to the final), then lost in the final and the true second match. 0-2 BBQ, but still an All-American. I can find no record of Dell Shockley before or after 1929.

  8. No clue what Byrd was studying but, if he uses all four (five) of his available years, he'll be a multi-time AA with a BA/BS and MA/MS from the University of Illinois. Well done, young man. Champaign is a great college town. Not exactly a lot to do outside of town but a fun place to go to school all the same.

  13. That is a great question that should be asked...answer = they ALL should have been charged just like Trump. And they "why" for them not being charged, please don't be disingenuous, you know for a fact that justice is applied unequally. What absolutely sucks about all this is the next time a R is in control of the justice department/FBI it will be used against the D's...it will become a vicious circle. To not see that is putting your partisan glasses on and then burying your head in the sand.

  16. Agreed. I think it's more likely Jamison mans 141, with Williams/Alvarez battling for 149 and the loser of Williams/Alvarez goes 157 to compete with Mirzo (Juco transfer). No insight, just a guess.

  27. He only received 1 forfeit. W Dec (32), L Dec (1), W Dec (16), W Dec (18), W Dec (26), W FFT (12), L MD (11), L Dec (5) to finish 8th. 16 was the highest seed he beat via non-FFT to make the podium. Still he won 4 matches to get there. As JB pointed out, two forfeits with no wins getting you to the podium is not possible since full wrestlebacks were implemented in the early 1990s. In today's format you would need to somehow get 4 consecutive forfeits in the consolations to get to the podium without winning a match. I guess on the front side it would take only 3 but that would require someone to enter the tournament injured and not wrestle which has happened (Nick Suriano, Dustin Schlatter, etc.) but less likely than a forfeit in a later round.

  28. For those curious Click here to watch. A FloWrestling subscription is required. 1) How are the mats set up? Mat 1 Greco, Mat 2 Men's Freestyle, Mat 3 Greco-Roman 2) What does the schedule look like? True-third matches are the undercard and begin at 12:30 EDT / 9:30 PDT Best of three matches begin at 2 EDT / 11 PDT. Session 1: First matches in each series are scheduled to go 2:00 EDT - 4:30 EDT Intermission: There will be an intermission which is scheduled at the end of round 1. The scheduled time is 4:30 6:00 EDT. I am not aware if there is a hard restart at 6:00 or if there is a hard 90 minute intermission. Session 2: Second and third matches (if necessary) are scheduled for 6:00 - 9:00 3) Are they going in order of weights? This is still TBD. Match order is scheduled to be released during a Friday press conference and this thread will be updated accordingly. 4) Can I watch on multiple devices? Unsure at this time. I personally would like to watch on three televisions that each use a seperate Roku stick. Typically I cannot do this for Flo events. I am hoping for the best but expecting the worst. *You can use a computer to extend to three displays (for three mats) by using three tabs on your web browser.*

  29. In 1984 Rudy Isom lost his opening round match at 167lbs to Jeff Jelic 4-3 of Pitt 4-3. He then won two consolations matches by FFT assuring himself of a top sure 8 finish. He ended up winning his next match 1-0 to make the consi semis and then lost before falling to Relic for a second time to finish 6th. Has anyone ever had an easier path to AA? It would be wild if someone lost in the first round won twice by FFT then lost two consecutive matches to finish 8th. Has anyone ever only won matches by FFT en route to an AA finish? If so, what's the highest finish achieved in this manner? 1984 Bracket http://www.wrestlingstats.com/ncaa/pdf/brackets/NCAA 1984.pdf

  33. "Glorified" - I see what you're saying. I guess it depends on who is doing the promotion. If it's the people themselves, then it seems more like celebration. If it's those other than the people themselves, then seems more like glorification. Can't get around it being a messy topic - no absolutes there. It is, without a doubt, a gray area. "Second bullet" - I'm in your camp here, too (maybe surprisingly... maybe for both of us.) It is the word 'very.' I believe the 'straight' community is not quite as big of a majority as most people think. The 'non-straight' community is extremely difficult to count (for obvious reasons.) This, too, is a gray area. Final agreement - we don't need government-financed months and parades and flags dedicated to people being themselves in order to get votes for politicians. We do need the freedom for us all to have parades and flags and celebrations about who we are, regardless of the viewpoint of politicians.

  37. 1981, 134 lbs was a ever bigger $hitshow. As big of one as possible. Clar Anderson of Auburn st the time makes the semis. Apparently all his previous opponents thought he would lose in the semis for sure as they all missed weight on the backside to give a injured Randy Lewis a forfeit in the 7th place match. http://www.wrestlingstats.com/ncaa/pdf/brackets/NCAA 1981.pdf

  43. I was going by a USAW press release on May 23 which stated "Match order will be available by Friday's press event." A USAW MFS preview on May 29 that I didn't read prior to my post stated "...In weight order, which is how the matches will be conducted at Final X." So there is our answer.

  45. It's unlikely to have ever happened in the Division I tournament since the wrestlebacks fully expanded to include every first-round loser. In 1984, there was still the follow-the-leader system that would look like a full international repechage, but where the entries got pulled back in if their opponent made the semifinals. I saw a kid in D3 (18 wrestlers in the bracket) get two medical forfeits on the backside to end up placing, but that 1984 thing was surely an anomaly given that two wrestlers got hurt on the front side in that quarterbracket where Isom came back through, including Melvin Douglas.
