James English from Penn State (149 lbs 2014 7th place) may be the right answer. Regardless of whether anyone did so more recently he is the poster boy for the spirit behind the question. Gutted out a series of brutal injuries, including his neck, finally got his chance, I think as a 6th year senior, was hurt at NCAAs and still almost beat eventual champ Tsirtsis and then placed and beat former champ Maple in the 7th place match. I believe his points were the difference between 1st and 2nd in the team standings and Cael carried him off the mat. To me him and Whitmer are bookends for the honor roll of last year starters, both super inspirational.4 points

I would think Spencer will have to fight his way to the finals. It may not be an easy road for him but easy roads are for wusses. I have always felt that you need to be of the mindset that you are the bad draw. Therefore, Lee is the bad draw no matter where he is seeded or not if he has that mental outlook. mspart2 points

Not necessarily seal the deal so to speak.... but do you really think there aren't conversations going on between the coach and those funding NIL to land transfer portal guys? Edit: I agree it's not part of an official job description or that they broker the deal, but I guarantee you coaches are involved in some way in conversations happening. In that sense, it's become part of the job unfortunately.2 points

Sherwyn Thorson was a three-year starter on the Iowa football team's offensive line in the early 1960s and played many seasons in the CFL and is in the Winnipeg Bluebombers Hall of Fame. He was NCAA heavyweight champion for Iowa in 1962 after being runnerup as a sophomore in 1960. He missed the 1961 seson due to a strange academic situation. "Thumper" Thorson was one of the first college wrestlers to lift weights seriously and he is a member of both Iowa wrestling halls of fame. Art Baker (191 pounds, 1959) and Jim Nance (hwt, 1963 and '65) were NCAA champions for Syracuse and also were football stars in college and had successful pro careers, while Curley Culp did the same at Arizona State. Culp was a rare double, being first-team All-American in football and NCAA wrestling champion (1967). He had a lenghty pro career and is a member of the Pro Footall Hall of Fame. There are others too.2 points

Sure...but if you're getting your ass kicked every year because the other schools are out recruiting you, or taking your most talented Wrestlers...especially a school like Minnesota that had been a top ~5 program for so long, then your contract may not be tied to NIL...but your job may be.2 points

Freestyle is much more suited to his explosive style (and with him not having to worry much about control, just literally turning exposing their backs quickly...I think he'll be great.)2 points

Case in point ... Suriano drilled right thru a broken ankle/foot and still qualified for nationals.2 points

With respect, us white liberals will be the ones who determine what is racially offensive. I THOUGHT we'd already established this when we decided "LatinX" was a thing?2 points

I can not imagine going to bed let’s say 7 lbs over and thinking you will drift close to that amount. Nobody must have had a clue what the situation actually was. I know his cut was huge and damn near impossible. He is not a guy I would have expected this happening to. I would have guessed Sparks or McKee1 point

Yes...a very small...but loud group of us is HELL BENT on solving problems that...do not exist. We also apparently give out every possible award designated for a women to someone who was born a man. https://www.rappler.com/entertainment/movies/kaladkaren-wins-best-supporting-actress-first-summer-mmff/#:~:text=MANILA%2C Philippines – Kaladkaren made history, the festival's inaugural summer edition. YAH FEMINISM!!! Trust me, most liberals don't know, agree...nor care about these things, or think they're silly. How does a non-binary samurai kill people? They slash them! I tell people on social media about some of this shit and...they do not believe me...which makes sense as I barely do myself. "87% of people are trans, they just don't know it." Quote from an actual verified account on Twitter. "The Government should require licenses in order to be a journalist...if you get something wrong, they should be able to revoke it." That came from a "verified account of a white conservative, so...ya know, there's plenty of stoopid to go around. I find overwhelming majority of people are like MSpart or MPhillips. They may lean one way or the other, but you can generally have a reasonable conversation with them....but the crazies...they're getting crazier and they're getting more attention.1 point

Good point.... It will be interesting to see how NIL impacts a coach's job the next few years. The direction seems to be that a good marketing/salesman may be have a better program than a coach who knows how to develop talent. I'm wondering if we will see NIL deals for multiple years that are somehow tied to staying at the school... a contract of sorts.1 point

Yeah, that is true about the language. Latinx is some made up thing probably by some white leftist with nothing better to do than to think they know the spanish language better than anybody. Gender assignments are made on a host of nouns and articles. In fact you would get a weird look if you said "La hermano" - Must be a gringo speaking, don't even know that the brother is a brother. Latin languages just be that way. mspart1 point

That reminds me of a kid who played football and wrestled for Wheaton Warrenville South HS in IL. He wrestled 152 as a Sr and was a state champ. He was also the nose tackle on two state championship football teams. One of those years he wrestled 142. I remember watching him play. He would get really low and submarine his way into the backfield and just mess everything up grabbing at shins, ankles, feet, whatever. Tough as nails. And a great name to boot. Spartak "Sparty" Chino. I looked him up on Wrestlestat. He wrestled at Ohio and was a 3x NQ with a round of 12 finish. But I don't think he played football at Ohio.1 point

Latino = masculine, Latina = feminine. Latin is neutral. I am none of the above. I only play one on the internet. So if you would, just refer to me as Baron Von Luchador. I'm more German than Hitler envisioned in his highest standard or arian supremacy.1 point

I know Tony Azarian was an All American NT at Whitewater while Wrestling 158...IIRC. He was not a big guy. They went on a run where they were in the D3 National Championship game for ~9 years in a row, won a whole lot. Their coach left and is now the coach at Kansas. His record at one point was something like 110-4. They were dominant. And Azarian is still the leading tackler in school history I believe. That was D3...maybe NAIA. I think they started out as NAIA and then became D3. https://uwwsports.com/honors/athletics-hall-of-fame/tony-azarian/1301 point

I agree to an extent. Most coaches have autonomy to decide what is to be part of their job. They need not be directly involved in arranging NIL. But if NIL is part of acquiring some portal transferee, then coaches will more likely coordinate in some fashion with those who might provide NIL sponsorships. This isn't so clear to me. I believe that some states may have passed laws prohibiting university employees (which would include coaches) from facilitating NILs and many if not all of these states have rescinded their legislation. I think Ohio did not pass such legislation, but Pennsylvania did and then rescinded their's. Regardless, the university's athletic deparment's NCAA compliance office would be expected to maintain whatever records are necessary to ensure compliance with NCAA rules. Additionally, I expect athletes would've signed some obligation to act in good faith regarding the rules and providing records.1 point

Dude...I am not that difficult(despite all evidence to the contrary)...I will call you want you want to be called. If Latino people ask me to call them LatinX, I'll do so. I WON'T do it because Art Majors of America united and decided that's what it'll be.1 point

Mark Sindlinger was a three year starter for the Iowa football team and a 2x AA for the wrestling team.1 point

I think Mark Ellis 2x AA and National Champ did both football and wrestling at Mizzou. Football maybe a year or two before dropping and just wrestling full time.1 point

Antonio Garay did both at Boston College. Placed 4th at NCAAs in 2000 and was drafted in 6th round of 2003 NFL draft. Played parts of 9 or 10 seasons in the NFL. Bob Golic did both at Notre Dame. Placed 3rd and 4th at NCAAs in mid70s, then drafted in the 2nd round of the 1979 NFL draft. Played 14 seasons in the NFL.1 point

The Mets will pay a huge luxury tax on the $270 million they went over. (230 million cap). Part of that luxury tax goes back to the other teams and part of it goes to player benefits. Of course this was all negotiated with a union. This is part of the competitive balance. The A's took in the least amount of revenue last year, but still profited on the bottom line even w/o the revenue sharing. I have no problem with kids transferring... the portal is fine..... the problem is the NIL side... and it has a profound effect on the portal. Scholarship limits were a way to keep a level playing field. They don't matter anymore when you can bring in a guy for 250k which includes all of his schooling. You can have 30 guys on "scholarship" now. Scholarships are now for mid-tier guys. The problem that needs to be dealt with is how to keep a more level playing field with NIL. If this does not happen, we will see mid-low level teams not be able to keep and sustain competitive wrestlers and teams. The end result will not be good for NCAA wrestling. Am I against the portal? No. Am I against kids getting NIL money? No. I am against the free-for-all that is happening with no regulation. It will not be a good end result.1 point

Maybe be cool with both his WWE career and his return to real wrestling. That'd be the super cool perspective. I see you as more of a super cool guy than a Debbie Downer type.1 point

I think it was a good interview. Maybe even a really good interview. At the end of the day, as a fan of wrestling, we all have our subjective opinions of what makes for good wrestling and by extension good wrestlers. It is easy to look at records and titles and say who the good wrestlers are. But to me that is superficial. In my opinion, good wrestling is consistently working for pins and getting them. To me the real heart and soul of the sport is more on the mat than on the feet. Yes, neutral is a part of the sport, but I think it is a lesser part. You can totally win matches and titles in the sport with only takedowns and escapes (heck in freestyle you don't even need escapes), but to me you will always be lesser than those who put others on their back. So was there a double standard for asking if Spencer had a bad match that he only won 8-0, while Yianni eeks out 1 point wins all the time? Depends on your point of view. I have been watching college wrestling for the last 20 years (so I don't the 90s and earlier). To me, the top wrestlers are (in no particular order): Askren, Nickal, Ruth, Taylor, Metcalf, and Spencer with Nolf and Retherford right behind. Noticeably absent are the guys with the best record and most titles: Stieber, Yianni, and Dake. But such is the subjectivity of such lists. While Yianni is undoubtedly a very good wrestler, I am not particularly saddened to see him go. He was not, in that sense special. Spencer on the other hand was. I am saddened to see his collegiate career conclude, because he was one of the guys that you just watched with excitement because you knew he was probably going to turn a guy. He freaking took top in that match against Ramos AND turned him for 4 AND rode him out (who the heck does that?). That is the kind of threat the top tier guys have in my mind. And Spencer was elite in that way and Yianni was not. And everyone kind of knew that. That is why people did have different expectations between the two. Is it fair? Meh, who cares. It is an admiration and respect thing, more than a standards or expectation thing. Does that translate to real life pressure? Maybe it does. The fact that he is talking about it kind of shows that it did cross his mind. Good luck to his international career and personal life outside of wrestling. I will miss him at the college level.1 point
