Guys -- there are many very good candidates every year and the voting is often controversial, for sure. As the creator of the Dan Hodge Trophy, I am sometimes disappointed in the outcome too, but I understand there are different viewpoints. You may be interested to know that Dan Hodge was very supportive of Emmett Willson's selection when we discussed the candidates and he learned that Emmett had won Vegas, the Midlands and the All-Star Classic. -- Mike Chapman6 points

Had a few of these brewing in the chamber, felt like I needed to get them out. -I would not be shocked if someone other than Lee or Glory won 125 this year. I foresee gas-tanks being an issue for both guys, and it wouldn't entirely surprise me if someone else emerged at the weight. -Keegan O'toole is pretty good. Like, he is pretty good and will probably win a few titles but his trajectory isn't what I thought it was. Don't get me wrong, he is a great collegiate wrestler, I just expected more of a jump from him this season in dominance. Kinda feels like Carr is going to win this weight to me. -Yianni is the HEW champ right now, guy hasn't taken a break in years. It seems like it's showing, either that or he has nothing left to prove. -Beau Bartlett is going to win 141 and everyone should have seen this coming. - Austin O'Connor is going to get a second title against all odds.2 points

I’m confused on how that’s what you got out of any of my input in this thread, especially a response pointing out the public nature of a tweet. Maybe re-read it and look at the context? I don’t get how you can think I clearly don’t like Bono (which is false, BTW) from anything I’ve ever written or posted ever.2 points

Pretty sure he has to do 4 years active coaching + 4 years of reserve coaching before he can move on to civilian endeavors2 points

Past credentials is just ONE criteria out of seven. It shouldn’t guarantee Lee anything because if he wrestles a limited schedule he’ll be trailing in other criteria such as record, number of pins, etc.2 points

Not a chance. Damion doesn’t take short-sighted desperate risks. You’re thinking of the previous coach that moved two states to the East.2 points

Why these two years? In 2023 we will crown two new 100%ers (I refuse to contemplate otherwise). The last time that happened was 1957. With Spencer Lee and Yianni Diakomihalis 100% guaranteed (guaran-damn-teed, some may say) to finish their careers having won 100% of the NCAA titles they are eligible for, I decided to see how often this has happened. There have been four other occasions where two wrestlers completed perfect NCAA tournament careers. In 1931, Conrad Caldwell and Jack van Bebber did the deed. Followed by Rex Peery and Ross Flood in 1935. In 1939, it was Joe McDaniel's and Stanley Henson's turn. Finally, in 1957 Ed Peery and Dan Hodge each won their third consecutive title. The 1930's was a whole other animal when it came to the NCAA tournament. The tournaments were much smaller than they are today. Participation was almost always fewer than 100 wrestlers across seven or eight weights. Travel was a big issue so there were generally fewer than 30 teams and almost all of those came from the center and eastern two thirds of the country. In 1957, Ed Peery won an 18 man bracket at 123, going 4-0 as the #1 seed. He won the final by unanimous referee's decision in overtime (I always find these referee's decisions to be odd). That was also the Peery family's unprecedented ninth title as his father and brother were also 100%ers in their day. I wonder what ever happened to the third generation. Dan Hodge won a 24 man bracket at 177, pinning 4 of his 5 opponents (2 in under a minute). In his three tournaments Hodge pinned eleven of his thirteen opponents. Only Don Wem and John Dustin were able to go the distance in those three years. The 1957 tournament was the largest up to that date with 213 wrestlers (that total would not regularly be eclipsed until 1963) from 62 teams.1 point

165 has three returning champions which is pretty cool. I feel that while it is not the strongest, 197 could be the most unpredictable1 point

Me too. As good as Carter is, I doubt he beats Lewis a third time1 point

Pure VT orange and maroon lens natty champs: 149-Henson 157-BA 174-Lewis Highly unlikely but one of those will win a natty championship in March1 point

Given how terrible most people's online security protocols and password choices are, I suspect this will be sufficient to allow dictionary attacks (against someone's master password) to become extremely relevant again.1 point

I had vague recall of a younger Peery that wrestled in the Dapper Dan event. Searched and verified the relationship, but sadly Greg Peery. passed away at a relatively young age in 2017. Sorry, on phone and can’t get the link to work.1 point

Appreciate the optimism that we are gonna witness history , but spencer has wrestled twice maybe in 12 months and yianni already lost one match and went to OT in another and seems like he’s over the whole college/ folk style thing , I believe that if yianni didn’t have a chance at being a 4xer he wouldn’t have even come back this year combine that with a very hungry and pretty deep weight guess we ll see how it goes ….. fun fact about Dan hodge sometime in the early 80s he ran into a group of recon marines in a bar/ restaurant type place while on vacation , a few of the guys wrestled themselves, so they knew who he was and went and talked to him , shook his hand, but the biggest of the group was a guy about 6’4 270 pounds , he instantly challenged hodge to a wrestling match , hodge laughed it off and said no but the guy persisted and eventually later on hodge agrees but tells the guy he’s not going to hold back , long story short they wrestled for about 10 seconds and hodge doubled him so hard the guy chipped his elbow on the ground and broke 2 ribs and instantly gave up , add insult to injury the big guy got disciplined by the marines for what they considered an injury sustained in a bar fight1 point

I know I am in the minority here but I think that 157 is pretty tough weight class. Will Lewan, Ed Scott and Brayton Lee are ranked outside of the top 8 right now.1 point

You are right I did post without knowing all the circumstances because I figured it would take some incredible, borderline impossible circumstances to justify it. But I will admit I probably shouldn’t have done that. Anyway, I did some research and I think it supports my claim. Here is WIN’s article for reference https://www.win-magazine.com/win-awards/hodge-trophy/emmett-willson-2004-hodge-trophy-winner/ Wilson had some very impressive wins no doubt, admittedly, much better than I expected. However, we don’t know for sure if he would’ve won D1 nationals. If Scott Moore had not gone to D1 nationals that year, he would’ve won the award. Furthermore, the article also points out 7 different wins over ranked D1 wrestlers. That’s impressive for sure! However, every single one was a regular decision. Then they say the reason he got it over Matt Gentry or Greg Jones (the only undefeated D1 champs) was because he had more pins. That doesn’t seem right to me knowing he didn’t have any bonus on the top D1 guys and then rewarding him for getting more pins. It’s just too tough to compare that to the grind of a D1 schedule when we say one loss eliminates you from the award.1 point

If he has half a schedule, he will likely still have more bonus points than almost anyone else.1 point

Everyone is going to talk about carr and o toole all season and then Griffith is gonna beat them both and win OW at ncaas , his match with otoole last year was razor thin and carr wrestles alot of close low scoring matches with top guys I think that works against him with Griffith1 point

Again side-stepping @Jason Bryant's literal presence in this thread. Also, read Hamitlon's article again if you didn't see a mention of the NPO. It's discussed three times. https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/10168119-nebraskas-burwick-stuck-in-eligibility-squabble-after-leaving-wisconsin And again, you are, beyond all that, ignoring that Bono himself came out, 6 weeks after Wisconsin "wasn't going to comment any further" and super ***duck duck goose** commented by insinuating, not that Kyle Burwick didn't qualify for the NPO....he (falsley and, like a coward, without naming anybody related to this issue) said that NPO rules didn't apply to Burwick at all. So, when given the opportunity to make the argument you're assuming is his reason, that BUrwick DID have an opportunity to participate and chose not to, he very obviously did NOT make that argument. He instead tried to lie/mislead to everybody about what the rules were. And you're just here whistling, assuming good faith on Bono's part. Wonderful.1 point

Yes, a consortium of me, an Iowa fan from Florida (Bono's home state) who is much more likely to dislike Nebraska and Mark Manning than Wisconsin and Chris Bono, a guy named Idaho, and Jason Bryant (just to name a few) are all conspiring against Bono. We have an article from Andy Hamilton, one of the preeminent journalists in this sport already posted in this forum. We literally have @Jason Bryant, one of the most reputable and respected voices in wrestling media, in this thread who you and others have managed to conveniently sidestep quoting or addressing throughout this thread. Except, when Bono said it on Twitter, that very same day Snyder responded with the full text. You're being purposely obtuse. This post here is emblematic of your entire approach where you make broad assumptions but criticize people for doing the same, even though the context of the situation is much more favorable towards the opinion counter to your own. They said they wouldn't comment on it, and then about 1.5 months later, Chris Bono, a university employee of some import in this matter, Tweeted about it. Disingenuously, obfuscating the issue to make it look like something was true when it wasn't. GTFOH.1 point
