  7. The OP subscribes monthly to BIG+ and chose Illinois..he only gets to watch Illinois. The last few years I would do the $15 monthly which would get me all the teams. This year the have a wrestling subscription that is $69 per year which gives me all the wrestling for the year (apparently it’s 50% off yesterday and cyber Monday) which is a great deal but I missed it because I subscribed a couple weeks ago. if you’re looking to watch all the BIG+ matches, wait till tomorrow and sign up for the wrestling package and it will only cost $35

  8. Good question. I calculated the probability any one seed ends as an AA based on results from 2010 - 2022. This is what that looks like: If you just count the wrestlers ranked 8 or higher, it ignores the fact, for example, that of the last 120 wrestlers seeded 8, only 60 finished in the top 8. Even a 1 seed is not a guarantee to finish as an AA, historically. So, I sum the probabilities associated with each team's current rankings (thereby equating ranking to seed). In that way you get expected AA. So a change of 0.1 can be thought of as a team increasing the probability that one of their wrestlers will AA by 10%. This is roughly the same as having a wrestler move from a 5 seed to a 4 seed. Thanks for asking @Crablegs, sometimes I rush to the final thought without posting all the ones that came before.

  10. I've done a preview of the ILLINI/Pitt portion of the triangular here. Andre at wrestlestat.com predicts a 15-15 tie, so it should be a good one. The marque matchups will be Lucas Byrd wrestling Micky Phillippi for the third time, while Zac Braunagel gets his first crack at Nino Bonaccorsi. This dual could come down to heavyweight. For those Pitt and Chattanooga fans wondering how to watch the match, it will be on BTN+, which is a subscription service. Here is some good advice for you: If you are willing to pay $9.95 to watch it, you can go to the website and select a "school pass" for ILLINOIS that is only that amount for one month. If you select a "sport pass" and select "wrestling," it is $69.95 for a year. You get a full year of B1G wrestling, but that's a lot of money. The steps: 1. Go to the website here. 2. You will have a choice between conference pass, school pass and sport pass. Pick "school pass." 3. Underneath that, you will see the logos for various B1G schools. Choose the big Orange "I" for the ILLINI. The first on the left. 4. Beneath that, select the "monthly pass" for $9.95 and follow the payment instructions. The good news is that I do this every year, and you can terminate the agreement online without having to talk to somebody in sales. Since this is only a monthly pass, you shouldn't even have to do that. I don't think they'll pro-rate your school pass, as the Big Ten Network sucks *****, so be ready to fork over the entire $9.95. I am not associated with the University of ILLINOIS or the BTN.

  11. Instead of always talking about how great their medical staff is, I'd go another route and insinuate that they suck all the time. Would help the narrative a lot! Ex: Instead of saying "We have the best medical staff in the country" say, "No way we get teched at 125 if our trainer hadn't screwed the pooch with Ayala and Lee, sometimes I think the guy is a dam junky!"

  12. You are totally correct on those points. And I think HR or anyone who thinks that about 2022 is wrong. Instead, Penn State is just better. The writing was actually on the wall in the 2021 finals when Lee and Starocci reversed the Big Ten results against Eierman and Kemerer. There were no injury issues there. And no significant talent discrepancy. And it's got nothing to do with how much money Penn State has and whether Andrew Long's repulsive behavior and Ed Ruth's penchant for weed and Cael having thrown a chair reveal a program peopled by fallible human beings, which they are -- but they're also the best wrestling coaches for and in this era. When Starocci beat Kemerer, to me the air came out of the balloon enough that the tide had turned (and whatever other mixed metaphors I can throw in). Kemerer was a top PA recruit, terrific guy, had hit his stride that year, dominated Starocci at Big Tens, and lost to the freshman at NCAAs anyway. When he gave up the TD in OT his body language was telling - the kid had made the adjustments and beaten him when it mattered.

  13. I previously compiled a list of all D1 All Americans from 1960 to 2019 and made it available for anyone here. Check it out and experiment with the data. Below is a list of seasonal brackets where the All-Americans of that year were National Champions in any year. These stand out 6 unique NCs 2008 - 149lbs 5 unique NCs 2014 - 125lbs 4 unique NCs 1976 - 142lbs 1979 - 142lbs 1981 - 134lbs 1986 - 142lbs 1989 - 126lbs 1994 - 142lbs 1996 - 167lbs 1998 - 118lbs 1999 - 149lbs 1999 - 133lbs 2007 - 149lbs 2007 - 125lbs 2009 - 125lbs 2017 - 184lbs 2018 - 125lbs The gap in that approach is that it misses DNP National Qualifiers that were NC in other years. For example, Paul Donahoe was a 3xAA and National Champion that DNP in 2006 at 125lbs. There was a good discussion on the old forum. See the toughest weight brackets.zip

  24. Iowa's injuries get held out more because of the perceptions about the Brands style. As mentioned, lots of injuries in this sport, including at Penn State. It's a tough sport.

  27. Tom Brands is a sharp dude. While they have seemingly experienced a rash of injuries, i don't think for one second that it's b/c of Tom's methods. 1) Tom's too smart for that and 2) think of the group w/ McDonough, Ramos, Metcalf, etc. none of them ever missed time and they were as just as much 'run through a wall' types as any of these guys. Actually let's take inventory or Iowa's injuries 1) Spencer (but he still won 3 so they didn't miss any points at all) 2) Murin wore an arm brace for a short period of time but he didn't experience any drop in ability 3) Kemerer - could certainly argue his placements could have been higher - particularly the years he took 6th and 5th - but i also don't think it was shocking. 174 last year was crazy last year and he lost to CStarr when he was healthy. is that it? who am i missing? Nelson, i guess but he's kinda been in a platoon most of his career.

  30. Nice job by Murin with the clutch win. Now just needs more of that at NCAA’s so he doesn’t finish R12 for the 4th time… What’s you guys think of Marinelli and Young as announcers? I thought they (particularly Marinelli) were OK, just a little homerish of course. It was kinda annoying that all the Iowa guys were on a first name basis and the Penn guys were always “this guy.”

  42. How is this even debatable? Both guys have one loss, but Yianni's is more recent and Gomez one the head-to-head, so he's ahead.

  43. I'm sure 90+% of us would agree with the "Young people are dumb premise". I think we would only disagree on the definition of "young". When my son was playing Legion Baseball, his head coach was this guy 80+ years old. He used to say, "Kids today are bigger, faster, stronger... and dumber than ever". Smart guy. Eventually, "we" will all realize that all this pissin' and moanin' by both sides is immaterial. As long as "we" are divided nearly 50/50, the super-rich will continue to pick the middle class's bones clean. It's not about abortion, it's not about gay marriage, it's not about who is using what bathroom, it's not about gun control, hell it's not even about clean air and water (as amazing as that seems to me). It's about money, pure and simple. Note how the issues change, the parties' position on issues change, politician's position on issues change, etc, etc. Things are continually adjusted to maintain the 50/50 balance. “Look at the orators in our republics; as long as they are poor, both state and people can only praise their uprightness; but once they are fattened on the public funds, they conceive a hatred for justice, plan intrigues against the people and attack the democracy.” ― Aristophanes, Plutus 408 BC (See, nothing is new.)
