I know a wrestler whose routine is to not have a routine. That way if his routine gets messed up it won't mess up his routine.6 points

The last time I wrestled was HS. I always blew my nose right after warmups. Our 112/120 pounder was a very good wrestler, but he got very nervous before he wrestled. When the previous match was starting, I'd always get up and start messing with him when he was behind the chairs warming up. I'd always try to get him in a headlock and give him a noogie. It helped to get the ants out of his pants. Our UNL was also very good, but lacked "the killer instinct". I always got in his face just before he wrestled and got him wound up, even if I was totally wiped from wrestling earlier. Good memories.4 points

First thing I put on was my headgear and it was the last thing I would take off for each and every practice after I arrived on campus and met someone with cauliflower ear. I wore it on the scale, on the bus, while running, everything we did, I did with my headgear on and snapped up.4 points

It's ironic that we say wrestling is for everyone.....as long as you're not too small or too big.2 points

Mine was that I would always to lay flat on back before a match or tournament and count the lights. I figure if you got it out of your system before the matches started, you were good.2 points

Rememer when Gilman used to be Capt Iowa and gave a lot of long winded interviews where he was succeeded in being rude and boring at the same time? Starocci is the same way. No one ever seems to mention it, probably because he is so good he can get away with it to be honest.2 points

Totally disagree. Ali, even when hated, was charismatic, creative, clever and funny. Starocci is none of those things. It's coach/athlete speak minus the typical respect for the opponent. When he starts trash talking in rhymes, let me know.2 points

People pointed out that gray shirting is much more likely to be done and doable for upper middle and high income families.. than to lower middle and low income families. especially because access to sport in general and especially sports like wrestling is getting expensive The TS started a specious argument that redshirting as an active student on campus is comparable.. when it is not. For me at least, it isn’t about “begrudging” anything. It’s stating facts on the ground.2 points

So are we eliminating them or not? At the risk of sounding absurd, this issue should have been resolved in four pages, not five. (see what I did there)2 points

Courtney is out this weekend. Figs will be wrestling 125 for ASU.2 points

The concept is stupid. Go to college, earn your degree - then play sports while there. Not good enough to start - oh well. Next year. Get hurt, that sucks. Move your life along. Eliminate redshirts. Do we redshirt Tuba players? Do we redshirt chemical engineers? Do we redshirt actresses? Do we redshirt pre-Med majors? Do we redshirt aspiring diplomats?1 point

No just live in Maryland and a giant wrestling fan hoping they can be good again.1 point

Not a big deal... until I'm proven wrong. Good greco guys and ncaa folk tend to not mix well. Look at the Koontz Bros. At tOSU. Very solid greco guys, but backups at best at ncaa d1.1 point

Imagine Kollin Moore or Kyle Snyder at 215 in college...1 point

That's too funny. I was typically the guy with ants in my pants trying to dodge the noogie lol1 point

I don’t think either of those weight classes are needed. A 215-225 class would be good. For the bigger guys over 285 I imagine they are going to be linemen for football.1 point

Figured I would just throw this in here. Kaleb Larkin listed in the 2023 now. Many wondered what happened to him this year.1 point

Well I didn’t but I also am losing my hearing pretty fast as I age. So there’s that1 point

Kurt McHenry and Malik Heindselman say yes. They want a chance to be runner-ups to Lee at 118.1 point

To me, what was great about SVV''s music threat at the Closed Mat was that so many were contributing to it, and all contributing things that they like. Nothing wrong with putting in stuff you like. To me, it just creates one big playlist for me to listen to from time to time. And NOTHING wrong with that Frank Marino stuff. Can't say I've ever heard him, but I loved it.1 point

What exactly have either of them said that would qualify as "shit talking"? I've only heard them say things like I train to be the best, I believe I am the best wrestler, etc. Never trashing their opponents, but only expressing confidence in their own abilities. I'd call this confident talk, maybe even boastful, but it's certainly not shit talking.1 point

Great point. But if you don't award the MFF points, then the reverse could happen. A team could potentially choose to MFF as a strategy to preserve a close team win and not risk giving up bonus points.1 point

My opinion is that this should have been a rout for the Rs easily. But for Trump hanging over everything, I think it would have been. Rs did not do well because of Trump. That's my opinion. D's, I's, and some R's don't like Trump and would not vote for those he endorsed. mspart1 point

is there a glut of 110 pound college kids who want to wrestle or a glut of 400 pound blobs.... in todays culture those 400 pounders aren't gonna want to work very hard 118 might be fun to watch 400... not so much1 point

This isn't entirely accurate either. At least not entirely complete. Yes, if you wrestled that year you are able to get a fifth ACTIVE year. But if you red shirted that year, you are able to get another red shirt year. The covid year means that it doesn't count against your NCAA D1 clock. 2020-2021 is a bonus year. From an NCAA (not necessarily an Ivy League-or any other conference or school) eligibility standpoint, the college year 2019-2020 is immediately followed by 2021-2022. If you think of it this way, all the other rules still apply.1 point

Is this argument more about the perceived "have's" and "have not's", or about redshirting?? To me those are two separate arguments and I find it hard to smoosh the two together, but that is just me. I am all for redshirting and really don't see what baring it is if your family comes from wealth, or it doesn't. People can argue all they want until they are blue in the face that this is somehow inherently "unfair" because of one's personal socio-economic situation...seems pretty illogical to base something that overwhelmingly seems like a good thing for college athletes (redshirting), because some may have a situation in which they come from a family that doesn't make as much money as another family. My family was very poor growing up, and I was the first to go to college on both sides of my family and had to take loans out, work a part time job and try and wrestle...never once did I think taking a redshirt benefited the rich kid, and it however somehow hurt me. Everyone's life situation is different, and I didn't begrudge the kids who had money, I instead focused on myself and what I had to do to better myself and my financial situation...whether there was redshirting allowed or it wasn't made no difference because of my lack of money in college, it did make a difference in how prepared kids were for doing athletics and academics in college regardless of income level...in a good way. As for the argument that even NIL is for the super elite and "the privileged" (sure like to know how you define that ), again NIL isn't inherently for or against anyone...it is there for anyone to take advantage of...just because one person may be better at marketing themselves than another person doesn't mean it isn't fair.1 point

First, I am glad we are communicating civilly. I am glad you are tangibly invested in the issue of support for education and student athletes. To me, it adds credibility to you. Here's a couple more tenets that I live by: 1) I refrain from telling tell any parent how to best raise their children. 2) I refrain from violating any laws of the land in which I inhabit. 3) I believe in the inalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness -- taken together as one whole. People should be free enough to pursue what makes them happy as long it does not infringe of the inalienable rights of others Based on the above tenets, I can't get too worked up about a parent holding a child back for whatever reason that does not violate law. Personally, I wish all young people could have the opportunity to take two gap years between HS and university. I believe most HS graduates these days will end up working until they are 70. SS benefits may be cut and only one's best 35 years count. Say one works 40 years in a job (excluding pro sports careers), one needs only enter the workforce by 30. It's my opinion that it's best to take time to find a career one loves, and can love for a lifetime, in the interest of one's pursuit of happiness.1 point

I understand why people would argue against redshirts and/or excessive extra years.. Saying that exclusively having gray shirts would not almost exclusively favor well off families is ludicrous.1 point

I’m college I was very routine. I would eat the exact same thing, warm up the exact same way with a pre-weigh in workout and a post weigh in warm up. I was a 125 and absolutely hated when they drew weights. My routine was all about performing exactly 1 hour after weigh in. Could never figure out quite how to get it right if I was the 4th or 7th match of the night.1 point

No he isn't a real pro boxer. But he makes money at it so that could be a justification for the term. He is at best an amateur boxer and probably would not do well in that circuit. mspart1 point

No. He was a 2x PA state champ but he's really undersized. He might be AA caliber in a 118 pound weight class though.1 point

You got booted for mentioning that? That's ridiculous. Did they ever ban anyone else for mentioning some other wrestling forum? That's just beyond the pale. mspart - I've been asked before. So here it is for all to see. When I first got onto the internet and email and stuff, I was in Minneapolis/St Paul area, living in Apple Valley. My first name is Arthur but I go by Art. The airport code for Minneapolis/St Paul is MSP. And there you go. mspart1 point

If sports weren't important to a school, then football coaches wouldn't be making 4 million a year while the professors make 90K. I don't think wrestlers redshirting is the problem.1 point

I was born a few months after the '67 riots and had family hurt, grievously, on both sides. We didn't move to Novi until ~1975? Some if my superstitions were quite dark for some time. My nephews and grandkiddos, though? I have one that listens to only shuffle dance electro during warmups. He lost to some kid he had never lost to before when his ipod broke? Swears it cost him the match. I have one who has different colored shoes with matching leggings. He alternates them depending on home/away and doesn't wash his socks once the season starts. My grandaughter wears a purple singlet under her blue and reds. I remember an old high school teammate wore a shoulder brace even though he never had any shoulder issues. His grandfather swore by it that it helped with throw defense and he believed him 110% all through high school.1 point
