Wrestling is a very tough sport, but it sure seems like that family gets hurt a lot.

They're the opposite of stiff, but to some extent stiffness seems to translate to sturdiness.

Yianni is one of the only guys at that level who I think is still confused about what his style is. I remember him saying he can't break people like Dean could(from top or a handfight), there was a phase when he obviously trying to be the guy who could suck in any leg and finish before his shoulders blew up, then he started trying to keep guys off his legs entirely but so much of what made him good was those defensive positions, he had elbows ties and misdirection but seemed to give up too many points on his own shots also.....it just never congealed into an tight style...sorry thats a tangent on getting hurt, but if you think about style he's the opposite of the Brands, who leaned into the ultra basic seemingly their whole lives and managed to maintain improvement the whole time (which seems to be whats limiting them as coaches Iowa is just too basic).

Well, the Brands boys pulled the trigger early and often.  The current Iowa guys do not, with the exception of Caliendo.

Is anyone in the know aware if Ferrera can make 125?

I am not in the know, but I doubt it.  Greg Diakomihalis is back in time for the Southern Scuffle (reportedly) and will be the 125 for the rest of the year.

I'd like to know if greyshirt Isaiah Cortez can make 125 next year.  His only loss this year is a 4-1 SV to Davino at the Clarion Open.  Davino beat Ferrera that day 10-4.

Isaiah at 125 is, in fact, the plan, according to an insider - not off the record but also not "public". Feel free to take this with a grain of salt but i'm not making it up.

is Greg D still the best option at 125 with his injuries and  extremely limited # of matches

This'll get worked out at the Scuffle. If the Scuffle is not formally a wrestle-off, it's still a significant data point in the decisions for a bunch of weights going forward. Greg D. returns at 125, Ungar at 133, Fernandez at 149 (though i doubt he replaces Joy barring an injury regardless of Scuffle results) and maybe 165 since Rogers bumped up from 157 with the return of Shapiro; Rogers/Cerchio split the work at Journeymen.

Koll would have found a way to get Knox and Vega to stick around.

idk i think waning influence - especially with the retirement of wrestle-centric AD Andy Noel - was part of his departure. that may have changed getting outbid for vega but idk if he'd have been able to buck the administration if they weren't going to let him bring in a guy facing felony charges.

The issue I have with this "plan" is that it didn't take into account Anthony Knox.  Would Isaiah have sat behind him for four years, or did the "plan" know that Knox was no long in the "plan," or is this the new-this-week "plan?"

new plan, i think. imo if knox was coming, isaiah competes for 133 with ferrara and at worst sits for two years (unless he loses the spot after Ferrara graduates to some TBA recruit).

Like he did with Ferrarri?

I almost typed out "Koll would have never gone after a guy like Knox after the bleachers incident" but then I remembered he tried to sell his soul for 2 years of Focus

Pretty sure Billy George wasnt kicked off the team after he kneed Nate Brown in the head, either.  And how long did it take Nickerson to remove Baylor Fernandez?

my bad - i thought i read it was a felony charge and appreciate the correctionn but the broader point about koll's pull stands. in any event, it is not to pull holier-than-thou's-school nonsense; cornell's got a rap sheet everywhere that it matters so i'm not throwing stones (except very specifically for Cael stealing a national title from us with a guy kicked off of ISU for sexual assault).

I don't think thats a....divergent conclusion from mine. Emphasizing basics, position etc can be paralyzing. Theres so many ways to scores points in a wrestling match, being dogmatic or narrow minded about how do it certainly has a price.

Maybe a 2nd edit is needed? Facts seem to be a bit off…

Andrew Long, the albatross that follows Cael still after all these years. He recruited/coached him at ISU, kid had drinking issues and run ins with the law got him in trouble there. Cael gave the kid a second chance and brought him to PSU - turned out to be a mistake - committed his assault AFTER the season and he was gone from PSU never to be back.
Not defending Andrew Long here, but you’re making it sound like Cael brought in a known rapist to win a title, no he brought in a drunk 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️ won a title, THEN the kid regressed badly and was gone. It’s slightly better?? 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️

fair - though it wasn't simply public intoxication at ISU. and if I am reading the timeline of his other charges right... ISU was his second chance. If we're being honest, though, I am in favor of multiple chances and this particular one sticks in my craw for entirely parochial reasons ... and the fact that he went rogue again IMMEDIATELY after helping PSU to the title.

I get it. Cornell had a great team that year and lost a close one. I’m sure it still stings.

The kid was given lots of chances and mucked them all up. Hope he’s straightened his life out. I’m all for second chances - on a case by case basis - I don’t usually go deeper than a 2nd chance. Cael was fairly young in his coaching career for this - 3-4 years in. I think he learned a lesson cuz he’s never done that again. Granted he doesn’t have to now, but still think that bit him in the a$$ and he learned from it.

Theres a lot of “creative information” re: PSU shared here by “fans” of other schools, so just wanted some accuracy as to what happened…it’s not good either way, but the timeline mattered here.

Isn’t there some kid on the psu team who last year got super drunk.  Acted a fool… was fighting with the folks at the house he was at.   Refused to leave said house.   and while getting apprehended resisted arrest and ran away only to get caught.   Wonder if we will ever know this “kids” name

Incident Details
  • The Confrontation: Police were called to the Tau Kappa Epsilon house on East Prospect Avenue after the 20-year-old All-American refused to leave the property.
  • The Escape Attempt:When questioned by police, Davis allegedly used a friend as a shield before attempting to flee on foot.
  • The Struggle: After being tackled, Davis reportedly "wrestled" with an officer, leading to the destruction of police equipment, including a wristwatch, a radio earpiece, and a body camera.
  • Intoxication Levels: A breath test and medical records later revealed a blood alcohol content (BAC) of 0.225%, nearly three times the legal driving limit. He was eventually transported to a hospital for a suspected alcohol overdose.

Legal Status and Consequences
  • Charges: Davis faced multiple charges, including resisting arrest, evading arrest, criminal trespass, underage drinking, and public drunkenness.

Hope he received a bill from campus police for destruction of their equipment.

Isn’t Iowa’s current coach a sex offender? Is he registered? How do they work it out for away meets and tournaments?? Does he have to notify local police when he’s in town to coach??

Don’t worry it’s working its way thru the system and he’ll be punished accordingly per PA law. And he’s currently getting a 1yr time out from wrestling. Just like Brands did when they had their little boys will be boys moment in HS.
