Is Yianni the most over hyped US wrestler ever? Since he was a sophomore I’ve been hearing how amazing he was at freestyle…hell when he lost 2-0 to Zain then sued a huge portion of the wrestling world was ok with it bc “yianni was our best chance to medal” …meanwhile yianni has taken a lot domestic loses -Zain ,J.O. , Nick lee and multiple Ls to McKenna.. has there ever been a US wrestler this hyped that has taken this many domestic loses

I mean I’m talking about freestyle , obviously he’s in the Mount Rushmore conversation for folk..my point was all the hyped big time US wrestlers from the past 20 years or so most never took domestic Ls maybe once in a blue moon, yianni stays losing to these guys , heck Nick Lee and McKenna have very real chances of keeping him off the team again

I think the better question is has there ever been a more d bag post than this?

The guy has been hyped as a freestyle savior since his freshman year , despite losing to 4 different us peers in that time frame and I’m a douchebag for asking a question about the hype ?Maybe the only Dbag on this thread is you

No.  It isn't.  It is the most dbag one in this thread, though.

When he had that crazy match with I believe Musukaev. I said he needed to tighten up his defense. People jumped down my throat ….I still think that’s the case, his style isn’t the best for Free.

He competes at arguably one of the consistently toughest FS weights. Metcalf was head and shoulders our best rep, with sky high expectations, and look what happened.

Yes but I’m not so much getting on yianni for lack of international success he’s still young but domestically he has 3 guys in his weight for Olympic trials that have multiple wins over him and you never hear half the praise for those guys that yianni has gotten for years ..metcalf if I remember correctly was pretty dominate domestically, obviously his lack of world success is well known …

I mean Yianni lost 2 straight to Zain filed a lawsuit , gave smug interviews bragging about how he has Cornell lawyers and they are the best, flew across the world to wrestle Zain when team usa went to a ranking event, hurt zains knee , then Zain had to cancel his wedding and mess up his training for worlds just to beat yianni for a 3rd straight time a few weeks out from worlds , when you rock the boat and cause that much commotion in the wrestling world I personally think you need to back that up and years later he might not even make the team this year , I also don’t see much of difference in ability from then til now

so for people calling me a DBAG I’m sorry that when yianni started suing people for a rematch the benefit of the doubt went out the window for him in my eyes

Yianni had gone undefeated internationally there for a period while his domestic peers had been losing.  And he beat good international competition...

he's a 4 time ncaa champ and is in the spencer lee, did it with an ACL torn club. World silver, what exactly does he have to do to justifying getting coverage?

Very nice differentiation, precision, and concise response on the exactness of the dbagness.

Forums (Fora, I suppose) are the exact place to ask and discuss/debate questions of this nature without the hurling of ad hominen insults.  Seems many do not realize this and think insulting someone personally is discussing/debating.

4x NCAA champ

2x world team member; additionally 2x world team alternate. All occurred before he graduated.

World silver at a weight with a 20ish year Team USA drought.

What about that still-growing resume says “overhyped?”

The most over hyped and overrated guy we have ever had was Jordan Oliver. Every year something would happen. Suspensions, weight issues and excuses why he would lose close matches. Then every year come trails everyone is picking JO

Thank you for giving a legit response to my question , and that is a good one , JO seemed to come up short a lot

Ok for the 3rd time on this thread this is about freestyle , I already pointed out that yianni is in the Mount Rushmore discussion for folk style he had an absolutely amazing career…but you say still growing resume and my whole point was he’s currently 4th on the US ladder for 65kg behind Lee , McKenna after losing to him today for a 3rd time and Zain whose a world champ and coming down from 70 , but when yianni first came on scene he was talked about like the next synder or Burroughs and he’s not even close to that level

Yes, there have definitely been multiple people saying “he was the best chance to medal,” but didn’t those usually occur AFTER he took those domestic losses?  I’m not sure if that qualifies as “hype,” it may be accurate and is based on who he’s beaten internationally, not just him “coming onto the scene.”

Again, freestyle, 1x world finalist, 2x team rep, 4x Team USA finalist.

You’re comparing him to two who have legitimate ground to go down as the best US wrestler, not just FS but any style, of all time. Yianni has already done more than JB in the same time frame (college career) so idk what you want other than to wait out the duration of his career?

i think part of it is that he lost to domestic contemporaries, not just savvy vets wrestling FS full time.

no one expected him to lose to Nick Lee 3xs.

another thing is, i think, he's been a superstar for so long people forget how young he is - 1 year removed from college (and already has a SR medal).

he's revered. and those kinds of stars often have unreasonable expectations put upon them (spencer lee).

anyone that thinks he's 'overhyped' probably have themselves to blame. no one is going unscathed at 65kg over a multi-year period.

Metcalf, Mocco, Schlatter (maybe due to injury in part), Askren.

Many of the best domestic wrestlers have been humbled against international competition. We are in a golden era where a guy who has won "only" one world silver medal at age 24 can be viewed as overhyped.

True but technically he’ll be 25 in April.  Burroughs got his first world gold at 23.

(of course to be compared to Burroughs he’s doing pretty well)
