In nearly ever match wrestled, regardless of style, both wrestlers go to the middle, and the ref raises the winning wrestler's hand. Again, I'm not going to make it into a bigger deal than it is, but I'm also not going to make an excuse for Barr running off the mat when he should have went to the middle and taken his loss.

When David Carr was young, his grandmother sewed him a teddy bear. He has had the teddy in his wrestling bag for every event he has ever wrestled. Recently though, Metcalf brought his dog to practice, and the dog got a hold of the teddy bear and shredded it. Metcalf felt bad so he got the shoes custom made for David. Awesome to see that David won the tournament without his safety blanket in his bag. I like to think that when he pointed towards the sky after the match, he was pointing to that teddy bear.

A light handslap after the match isn't how wrestling works and Barr knows that.. especially in freestyle where you also shake the refs hand before and after. It's not that big of a deal, but it was poor sport behavior.

Regarding JB, I think Caldwell’s whole strategy was to just stall and keep it as close as possible and hope to steal it at the end (can’t blame him… it was his best chance). If that’s your goal it’s easier to keep it close, but hard to pull out the W. JB was clutch in those close matches through the first several years of his world titles. He was 3-0 vs Caldwell that year including a major in the NCAA finals. I don’t think that close win takes anything away from JB. In fact it may add that he was diverse enough to pull out a win against a very defensive opponent. Regarding Ruth, I think you have a fair point. I think he often looked like he lacked interest (don’t know if that was the case - just eye test). If he is locked in and at his best, yeah you might be right that he is the best 174 in the last 25 years.
