  1. 5 point swing at the beginning. Pj stepped out before the throw would have been interesting if that was challenged.

  3. I don't think there's ever been the time when the US has ever had 5 high schoolers as good and accomplished as these five: L Lockett J Forrest M Blaze P Duke B Bassett How would you rank them, in freestyle? Anyone more deserving of top 5 than these five? (The Open's done but still plenty of time for upsets at U20s...)

  4. I saw a lot of people on social media act like they are surprised by this too. Stanich is a beast. He placed 5th in the country as a true freshman in 2024. Beat several AAs as a redshirt this year. Has two years in a D1 room. The fact that Bassett is even close to that level is impressive. Definitely not an upset

  5. The US Open winner gets to advance to Final X at the same weight category in which they won. If a weight has a returning World/Olympic medal winner, Final X is then set. If there is no returning medalist at the same weight, the 2nd Final X participant will be determined at World Team Trials. If a returning medalist is changing weights, they are not eligible to accept a Final X bid, they must go through the US Open or World Team Trials Challenge Tournament. Champions from the US Open are not eligible to compete in the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament.

  8. Okay so I am I getting this right, but Aeoden Sinclair competed in both 92Kg Seniors reaching the finals and also wrestle 86Kg, in U20’s again to get to the finals. What a stud. The young kids came to play at this tournament.

  11. I think freestyle is way worse than folkstyle. Not that folkstyle refs are Greek gods or anything but they're in generally good shape for their ages.

  12. Still a ways to go but that kid PJ wrestled in the finals, Melvin Miller, is still just a sophomore. He is lightning quick and gave Duke all he wanted. 70k is a big weight for a 16 year old to impose himself on much more mature opponents. Very impressive run to the Finals. He might just make that list in the next year.

  13. I was being a tad tongue in cheek but I really am confused about how old these wrestlers are. Every bracket I'm like wtf, they're __ years old? How is this person wrestling this person for age world teams when one is halfway through college and the other is halfway through high school. I think one is a young phenom about to take over only to find out they're 20. Seems absurd.

  14. worth noting Zepeda lost to Ninninger 6-3 on the backside but gave stanich his toughest match 8-8. Ninninger got teched by Bo in about 2 minutes. It seems like if you can withstand the pressure of Bo you are in the match there are just very few guys that can do that. If you cannot you are getting teched.

  15. showed the first chink in his armor that I've noticed. His feet seem a bit slow. Domestically Melvin may honestly be the only guy that can exploit that though I do not see Yianni or James green picking his ankles. I dont think there is anyone junior or senior that can go upper body or whizzer seat belt with him. Definitely surprising to see both Rodideau and Melvin push him a bit I still think he makes it to final x against Yianni though. I will say I think if he was pushing the issue melvin would have gotten hit for attention because he was clearing ties and circling as soon as he did not get that underhook to go cross pick.

  17. I dunno about "should have lost." Maybe in the Kolat "let's rescore the match in a back room after its over" era but not today. Coaches could've challenged it but didn't. Duke also wrestled defensively to sit on his lead, which wouldn't have happened had he not had a lead. Regardless, Miller pushed him. Not many guys can score on Duke.

  22. purely an observation and I am sure just a coincidence, but its sort of funny that Herring and Jax make commitments and go on to have the best performances of their lives (to PSU and OKST respectively) and Bo commits to Iowa and takes his first age level domestic loss in almost 2 years.

  24. I like the new system. The US Open had really lost its luster for a number of years. If the best you could get from it was a bye to the finals of the WTTs, where you *still* had to win to make Final X, it really wasn't much of an incentive. Too easy to just wait for WTTs so the best guys skipped it. The only guys who went were the ones who needed to get their top-8 placement to qualify for WTTs. The result was that the premier senior-level freestyle event was more of an afterthought, and just one of multiple ways to qualify for WTTs. The quality of WTTs does take a hit since it'll eliminate some weight classes (two this year), but I don't think it hurts the event all that much. And it may make the remaining WTT weight classes that much more competitive, as some guys will shift weights to try to make the world team at a weight where there's still an opening. So this year, expect some of the 61kg guys to be at 65kgs at WTTs. Overall its a change for the better.

  29. I think you are 100% correct. I know personally, there were guys I wrestled multiple times, and whether I knew I was better or not, some guys you just know it's not going to be a fun wrestling match. I assume everyone going into a match with Mesenbrink is thinking "this spaz is just going to slap me silly and take 1000 shots in the next handful of minutes." Wrestling against Mitchell looks like a terrible time, win or lose.

  32. Article 43 – Technical Superiority Except from the fall and the disqualification, the bout must be stopped before the end of regular time when: - There are 8 points difference in Greco Roman style and 10 points difference in Freestyle between the wrestlers The bout may not be interrupted to declare the winner by technical superiority until the action is completed (see article 27). Article 27 – End of the Bout The bout ends either when a fall, a disqualification by injury of one of the opponents are declared, or at the end of the regular time. A match ends by technical superiority (8 points difference in Greco Roman wrestling and 10 points difference in Freestyle and Women’s wrestling). When a wrestler scores 8 points more than his opponent in Greco-Roman Wrestling and 10 points more in Freestyle and Women’s Wrestling, he wins the match by superiority. In any case, the referee must wait for the end of the action: attack, counter-attack or takedown where the wrestler is in a position that may lead to a fall. If the referee has not heard the gong, the mat chairman must intervene and stop the bout by throwing a soft object on the mat, in order to attract the referee’s attention. Any action begun at the time when the gongsounds is not validated and no action performed between the sounds of the gong and the referee’s whistle is valid. When the bout has ended, the referee stands in the center of the mat facing the mat chairman’s table. The wrestlers shake hands, stand on either side of the referee and await the decision. They are forbidden to lower the shoulder straps of their singlet before leaving the competition hall. Immediately after the decision is announced, the wrestlers shake hands with the referee. Each wrestler must then shake hands with his opponent’s coach. If the above provisions are not observed, the wrestler at fault will be penalized in accordance with the Disciplinary Regulations. It would seem that Carr was not in a position that would lead to a fall, so they stopped the match when MM attained a 10 point lead. At least that is the way I interpret it.

  33. No, nonono you don’t want this. They had this rule already in the early 2000’s, I did all my freestyle/greco during this time, and you had to hold exposure for an extra point in between each turn, it slowed the pace of wrestling down a sh1tton. This limitation is precisely what made freestyle and greco boring to the point it almost got yanked from the olympics.

  34. Dake and I are the same age. I've been saying it for the last handful of years that I can't believe guys like him, Taylor, and Burroughs could still maintain the grind that it takes to be near the top of the world after your body has physically peaked. How many 34 year old wrestlers are winning world titles from any country? Dake also just isn't an 86kg wrestler.. at least right now.

  36. Anyone new to wrestling tonight must wonder about the span of wrestler's sizes: From the fireplugs of Marsteller, Hidlay and Cronin at the one end to the relatively rangy, wiry or whispy Forrest, Gross, and Wick at the other end.
