This is getting a little lost in Socratic questioning of what "poaching" truly means. I do not know if the events in December led to PSU representatives reaching out and seeing if Rocco would like to join them, or if Rocco reached out to see what they could offer him if he hopped on the PSU train. At the end of the day, PSU is not getting Rocco Welsh for free, and they brought in a high profile transfer from another school. I'm not claiming villainy. I just don't understand the efforts to act like PSU is operating in a more virtuous manner than any other of the big players.6 points

…is the only person that beat Michael Caliendo in an attached match, that hasn’t won a NCAA title? Looked into Kharchla’s wrestlestat after Rocco Welsh claimed he needed better partners. In 2023 he beat Michael Caliendo at NCAA’s, although Kharchla only finished R12 and Caliendo got 7th. But I noticed that since his redshirt year, Caliendo has had 14 losses. They were to: Mitchell Mesenbrink 6x Keegan O’Toole 3x Shane Griffith 2x Dean Hamiti David Carr and Carson Kharchla. That’s got to be some sort of record for most # + highest % of total losses to eventual National Champs right?5 points

Research... Jason Nolf scored the most points across four NCAA tournaments. (98) Ed Ruth with most NCAA tournament wins (21) Ed Ruth with most wins in a career (136) Ed Ruth and David Taylor with most wins in a season (38) David Taylor scored the most points in a single NCAA tournament. (30.5) David Taylor with the most Gorriaran awards (2) David Taylor with the most Outstanding Wrestler awards (2) David Taylor with best senior level success (Olympic Champion) Zain Retherford had the season with the highest domination score (5.56) Zain Retherford had the highest bonus rate over his career. Zain Retherford with the most dominant season awards (3) David Taylor and Zain Retherford with the most Hodge awards (2) Aaron Brooks and Carter Starocchi with the most titles over four seasons (4) Carter Starocchi with the most titles (5) Bo Nickal with the most pins in a season (18) Bo Nickal with the highest pin percentage in a season (58% - 18 pins in 31 matches) Bo Nickal with the highest pin percentage in a career (48% - 59 pins in 123 matches) Mitchell Mesenbrink with the most technical falls in a season (18) Mitchell Mesenbrink with the highest technical fall percentage in a season (67% - 18 TF in 27 matches) Mitchell Mesenbrink with the highest technical fall percentage in a career (51% - 27 TF in 53 matches) In 2012, David Taylor was the first Penn State wrestler in 21 years to claim the Most Outstanding Wrestler Award. Cael and David kicked off the dominant PSU run. Best College Wrestler: Zain Retherford takes the title. His 5.56 peak domination score (highest), 3 Most Dominant Awards (most), 3 NCAA titles, 2 Hodge Trophies, and 94-0 finish over three years reflect unmatched consistency and dominance. David Taylor’s 30.5-point tournament, 2 MOW Awards, and 2 Gorriaran Awards are impressive, but his 2 titles and lower bonus rate place him behind. One more title and David's legacy puts him into first place for college. Carter Starocci’s 5 titles and total NCAA points are strong, but his lack of Hodge/MOW awards and lower bonus rate degrade his case. Nolf’s 98 NCAA points and Ruth’s win totals are notable... Best PSU Wrestler Overall: David Taylor. His Olympic gold, World titles, and unparalleled senior-level success, paired with a stellar college career (30.5-point NCAA tournament, career points, 2 Hodge Trophies, 2 MOW Awards), make him the clear choice. Zain Retherford’s college dominance is unmatched, but his senior-level career (1 World title, no Olympic medal) doesn’t compete with Taylor’s. Aaron Brooks’ Olympic bronze is promising, but he’s early in his senior-level career compared to Taylor's legacy.4 points

Life tip: I do not know what Pat Mineo says. The reporting came from Willie Saylor and Justin Basch. And the idea that I have to take what Welsh says here at face value is laughable. Lets assume for the purposes of this conversation that there WERE improper conversations had between Penn State and Welsh; he's at Penn State now. Do you think he's going to rat out the institution he just committed to for recruting or tampering violations? GTFOH, lol. As to Teemer and Buchanan, both guys were graduate transfers and thus not beholden to the transport window. According to Willie re: Teemer, he had an offer standing in front of him for a long time and he was just unsure what he wanted to do. This is such a ridiculous take I'm not sure where to begin, especially given it's from a guy advocating for Penn State. Glazier DNP'd (and did so again this year). Did you see the lineup Penn State put out there this year? The reason Iowa is so far behind (not that they would be competing with Penn State anyway) is because of doing it exactly the way you want them to. They relied on homegrown lesser recruits for years. It was not working. I dunno, your Mr. "Take Whatever the Wrestler Says at Face Value", right? So listen to Stephen Buchanon talk about his time at Iowa and what it's done for him and his love for the sport. Or watch his teammates mob him after he wins a title, including both guys that lost in the Finals earlier that session. Or listen to Patrick Kennedy talk about his love for the Brands brothers and what they did for him. Seems like the culture is just fine.4 points

Carson was right there with O’Toole the year he won his first one. Would have loved to see how good he could have been if he had stayed healthy and not blew out his knee. Same goes with Sammy Sasso. This season would have been very interesting to watch as an Ohio State fan if Kharchla stayed healthy and Sasso didn’t get shot. You can even include Nick Feldman and his neck injury where he hasn’t been the same since.3 points

He also wrote about it on the message board recently. Good discussion and beneficial to anyone interested in wrestlers being honored. When I first came up with the concept back in 1994, I sat down with Dan Hodge (my first book was "Two Guys Named Dan" in 1976 and we became very good friends) and told him of my plans to create something similar to the Heisman Trophy, to draw more media attention and to give college wrestlers something extra to shoot for. Dan endorsed the idea and said if I named it after him, he would like pinning to be an essential part. In 1956, Dan won three national titles (collegiate, freestyle and Greco-Roman) in two weeks time by pinning all 13 foes. I quickly agreed that pinning would be a main factor. But since then, Bryan Van Kley (who bought WIN from me many years ago) and I have tried to "keep up with the times" by including dominance to mean techs and majors, as well as pins. And we consult with many former coaches and leaders of the sport who are on the voting committee and try to listen to what fans are saying (WKN and JB, in particular) and some of my longtime friends who have been involved with the sport for over half a century. Bryan and I are proud that over 20,000 fans vote on line each year and that all the colleges that have a winner play it up big, both at the annual wrestling banquet and at a football game in the fall, often with 70,000 fans in attendance. And we greatly appreciate our sponsor Asics. The goal was always to make wrestling more visible and to honor those who excel at Mankind's Oldest Sport. -- Mike Chapman We are lucky to have him on the board.3 points

Once is luck, twice is a coincidence, three times is a pattern. The first was Snyder, the second was making Asians champs finals, the third time was beating 2023 92kg world champ Aitmhukhan (who won as a junior!!) - that bracket also had 2023 92kg junior world champ Azimi from Iran take third [lost to Autmhukhan in semis].3 points

Four more to add this year. Is that a new record? 4 transfer champs in one year. It was very nearly 5 with Troy Spratley losing a close match at 125. Mitchel Mesenbrink Cal Baptist->PSU Dean Hamiti Wisconsin->OSU Stephen Buchanan Wyoming->Oklahoma->Iowa Wyatt Hendrickson Air Force->OSU3 points

If I can only have one, would take folkstyle. Freestyle is fun and I admire the achievements, but not for me the primary goal fo thye sport. Have not studied it, but I would guess that folkstyle wrestling dwarfs freestyle in the U.S. and our collegiate wrestling is so much fun that even Ono wants in. We should ditch greco at the olympics - what a huge bore. Worth it to add back 3 weights in freestyle.2 points

I have a 2006 F150. It runs like a champ. It has 270,000 miles on it. Original engine and transmission. (not rebuilt). I get 17 to 18 miles per gallon on the highway. To replace it with a new F150 is 50K to 75K.2 points

If this is real. I don't think 15th in their weight class recruits are really getting any real money that would result in a negotiator. This looks more like someone who thinks the state of NIL is sad so they are making up a super sad story. But if they're serious, they should receive about 2 pizzas for their work setting up the NIL deal for a mid level freshman wrestling recruit.2 points

What has Jordan Williams done off the Mat? Far as I know, he got drunk twice and one of those two times there was "malicious damage to property." It feels like kids are REALLY going over the top on this kid. He's not accused of the same thing a former Okie State Wrestler has been. Just did some stupid kid stuff. Also, I've seen repeatedly how Sinclair is going '84, but is there any thought to him going 174? I think he's a legitimate contender next year at '74(even with Haines)...I just don't see it at '84 with McNelly, Ferrari, whoever wins the job at PSU(not doing the whole list again). When you see him next to these guys...he's just smaller. He's shorter and I don't want to sound mean here, but he's not real defined. Suffice to say, I think he's got a little...extra weight he could drop, get down to '74 and be a beast.2 points

I guess I didn't convey my point strongly enough. I was arguing that NONE of these kids are getting that kind of money that is being thrown out on the internet. I have the honor of knowing many of these kids and their parents. I am sure they would love to see the type of money that is 2x , 3x even 4x what they earn per year. I just don't buy it. BUT.... Here is where the math does work out, at least for me on a $300k "bag of money" - a kid gets full out of state tuition, which at some schools is easily $60k/year. Then housing and meals - housing $15k-$20K/year, meals $6k to $10k/year. So far that is $90k/year. Then a local car dealership offers the athlete a high end pick up truck to drive around for the year - loaded Ford Raptor or similar $112k. Now we are at just over $200k a year. Add some stipend in exchange for work or representation, and you can package that as a huge offer, but in reality, these kids don't add much to their pockets. Don't get me wrong, that is HUGE value they are receiving as athletes, but they are not getting a $300k check to deposit into their bank accounts.2 points

Thought pretender previously. Think he's legit now. He's younger than I thought also. I thought he was mid 20s for some reason. I wonder why we never saw him at junior worlds.2 points
