  1. I've been hesitant to attribute the pokes' early season success to any technical training changes made by Taylor and co. I assumed that the team's aggressiveness, bonus point pushes, and ability to get off the bottom have been a result of a general excitement following regime change. We are still seeing elbow ties, an abundance of stutter steps in space, and shin whizzers or bust (not too many busts at this point). But then I noticed something: None of the coaches are wearing vests. Even Caldwell has abandoned the Stillwater sartorial staple. The trainer is the only holdout.

  2. Speaking of fiction, you're living in a world where a bronze medal is closer to gold than a silver one.

  5. Your apathy has caused you to not pay attention. There have been a ton of top 10 match ups. O'Toole v Haines Ramos v Spratley Ayala v Knox Hardy v Jamison Lovett v Henson Downey v Taylor Keckeisen v Plott Buchanan v Munoz Hendricksen v Feldman

  6. I haven't been this apathetic about a wresting season in 40 years, there is more talent out there than ever. There were some great matches at the All-Star but since then it seems like every marquee matchup that is anticipated doesn't happen, dudes don't wrestle or show up for the tourney at all. Last year at this time Crookham had beaten Vito and Blaze beat #1 Ramos as a HS Junior. and there were a dozen other storylines. We are almost halfway through the season. what are the highlights so far? Anything. Josh Barr meeting expectations is all i can think of so far. Perhaps Ferrari.

  8. I guess my point is that I rarely see a 125 who isn’t doing terrible things to their body to make weight, and McHenry is a guy who looks like he weighs 115 soaking wet. That young man is a world class athlete and he’s giving up 15-20lbs to his competition. I’d have the same feelings about it if he were still at Michigan. Hell, Iowa too. Now, is he a statistical outlier? Absolutely. The entire world is getting bigger, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see 57kg go up to 59-60kg in the near future. So I understand why there isn’t a weight class that low. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  10. As all expected. And in 3rd - half a Penn State B team.

  11. Well, at least let me be clear what my conclusions are. 1. Both Brooks and Lee are obviously world class wrestlers. 2. Brooks tends to wrestle more freely in his biggest matches while Lee wrestles a little tight, perhaps negatively impacting his biggest matches. 3. NLWC is a far better club than HWC. Too many results to not know this is the way that it is, so not sure why it was implied in this thread that HWC was better.

  12. You are stating opinions as facts, and then just saying othes can't have opinions. Brooks can not have been closer to winning gold definitionally, since Lee made the final and Brooks did not. Brooks didn't even get to compete against Yazdani, and you're just presuming Brooks would have beaten him, whereas Spencer actually did beat everyone in his bracket except the gold medalist. Brooks didn't beat either guy that made the Finals.

  13. I rarely think, “Man, this 5’5”, 132lb kid looks like a giant” but he made McHenry look tiny. Threw him around a couple of times but McHenry was too quick and too skilled overall. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  14. So you think 4 wrestlers were closer to winning the 2023 NCAA title at 125 than Spencer Lee? That 6 wrestlers were closer to winning at 165 when Alex Marinelli was finishing 8th? Ok.

  17. Jordan over McHenry 5-4 At 157, top seed but unranked (although the # 2 seed is ranked 25th) Noah Castillo of UTC goes down to Jack Neis of American Ryder and both Mirasolas into the quarters

  18. Kueter’s choice was extraordinary because usually someone that has any chance at the NFL will choose football because of the potential money, not because of the lack of a 220 weight class. Even if you added 50 new guys which I doubt, you’d probably be taking 50-75 guys from each of 197 and heavyweight, leaving 197/220/285 at around 200 guys each which would be about 20% lower than any other weight.

  19. Such a psu blue glasses answer. He didn’t even win true third….. and we don’t even know if he would beat the Greek. Sounds like pure jealousy or anti Iowa hatred tbh.

  23. Speculation but that would be my guess. If it’s someone that is not in the portal, it would be a Yianni moment for Cenzo, who previously went on Basch’s podcast to complain about Woods being recruited to Iowa from Stanford.

  25. Poorly televised? You must have watched something other than the ESPN+ stream I saw. Professional announcers, professional camera work, accurate scoring and clocks, only mispronounced "Foca". Got "Shapiro" correct. Only saw the gymnasts in the background on rare occasions (did see that coach in the red and white outfit a few times).

  28. Senior year of high school I walked off the football field at 230+ in November. My wrestling coach wanted to me stay in the 180 to 190 range. I wanted to play football and made first-team all-prep in football. Lost 20 pounds in the wrestling room but no way was I cutting another 25 plus to get to 185. I got my butt handed to me by some guys who I had actually blocked well on the football field. It was a long season for me - would have loved a 215 class.

  30. My excitement level is low as well. Maybe it’s injuries, lack of top teams or big matchups happening at what I consider watered down dual meets and tournaments. Take the SS for example, the match with Arnold and Ferrari not happening killed it. The highlight match of the tournament and it doesn’t happen due to a MFF. We can get KOT vs Haines but not Ferrari/Arnold. Hopefully the second half of the season heats up, January-March is a great time of the year when wrestling is going full steam.

  31. I feel my excitement level as being lower than it usually is at this time of year. Not sure why exactly. It could be my fault entirely.

  33. Seems like the least amount of TV aired matches/events I’ve ever seen. Used to be able to catch some duals and at least a tournament final or two between one of the ESPN channels, Big10 network, and the ACC network by this time of year. Now almost everything’s behind a paywall of some sort.

  36. I have felt for years that the Football selection Committee had been dodging bullets with the 4 team playoff model. The very first year when Ohio State won it, they were really 5th or 6th but the Big 12 didn't play a Championship game which knocked them out and put Ohio State in when they beat Wisconsin 59 to 0 for the Big Ten Championship. Ohio State won with their 3rd string quarterback Cardale Jones.

  37. Hello all, glad to see this thread again Senior nationals are going on right now for FS. Today was the 1st day. No real big news. Goleij beat Bazri in the semi at 97 and will almost certainly beat Babaloo in the final tomorrow. So he will likely be Azarpira's obstacle in making the 2025 world team. 57 still very weak. Sarlak and Veisi lost to an unknown guy from Qom in the last seconds, lol. The final will be the Qom guy vs Valizadeh who went to junior worlds this year but had the results of DNP. He beat 17 year old Khateri 8 - 5 in the semi. I think none of these guys, including Sarlak who has to be around 25 or 26, would medal at junior worlds let alone senior.

  43. I can imagine an entire squad of one trick ponies doing Lee's armbar, over and over and over again. I suppose that's an improvement over locking up and pushing. Naw, Iowa needs to hire somebody else. I hear John Smith is looking for a gig.
