  5. These two guys wrestling would continue a nice tradition that's developed at the Soldier Salute, which is that the highlight match is always some sort of intra-Iowa practice room grudge match which devolves into an utter sh!t show. Two years ago, it was Lee v Ayala. Remember that? Supposedly Lee, who was on the mend, just wanted Ayala to forfeit, but Ayala wanted to wrestle. They did, and Lee pinned him -- and after a little face mush, got up and immediately started chirping at Brands over in the corner, saying "he wanted this" or something similar. Shortly after, Ayala's mom started talking crap about Lee on Twitter, saying he won't practice with Dru, and so on. Good stuff! Last year, it was the Ferrari brothers debacle. First there was Anthony, who lost to Rathjen and shoved Rathjen after the whistle in frustration. Caleb laughed like it was the funniest thing that ever happened to him, and did a Ferrari flex on Anthony. Then AJ, not to be outdone, got into fisticuffs with Glazier after winning, only to get DQ'd, then did the infamous double-bird-splits to the crowd. So how do we top it this year? Somehow I doubt the Peterson-Ayala match is going to dredge up much drama, so I'm counting on Angelo to pick up where his brothers left off and uphold the Soldier's Salute tradition of creating some good ol' fashioned center-mat finals drama. Don't let us down!

  6. I agree Incontrera was handled in that match, but I really think Norman is just a problem in neutral. He outwrestled Hamiti in neutral in the CKLV finals as well. That misdirect that he hit in the second was so fast and smooth. His bottom wrestling is a big concern when it comes to KOT, Haines, and Hamiti.. but he looks like he could be the clear #4 in the country after seeing what Hamiti did to Wolak, and what he just did against Incontrera. I'd pick Norman over anyone not in the top 3 at 174.

  7. Last year. This year his dad said he busted his butt to bulk up to 184, but he (Gabe) would do whatever the coaches asked him to do because he is all about the team. His dad also said he never talks to him about it as he is not involved in the decision.

  9. Oh...well, in that case, I have no problem. I'm fairly sure the same thing happened when Barr wrestled Mirsaola. Barr spanked him pretty good. 10-1 IIRC? Mirasola wasn't going to Wrestle this year anyway(most likely)...but he wrestled the match. I get he's not a Ferrari level recruit, but he's not far off. I'm good with that. Let the loser know where he stands. Mirasola now knows he's not all that close to Barr at the moment. The biggest leap Wrestlers make is usually during their Freshmen season, in-season, going through the practices and then, in my experience, Soph year when you know what it takes. So I'd let them all Wrestle. If Starocci and Brooks were both at '84 as one was taking a RS, I'd let them Wrestle. I don't think it hurts anyone, only helps. You can't be scared of taking losses. That's almost certainly going to happen.

  10. Sorry, I should have clarified better. There is no reason to have Arnold and Ferrari wrestle in the finals unless the spot is on the line, and you are going to pull Ferrari's RS if he wins. Otherwise you just had your starter in Arnold go out and lose to the guy in RS in front of the country for no reason. The match in itself obviously doesn't burn the RS, but I don't understand why you wrestle it unless the spot is on the line. I felt similarly when tOSU had Davino and Bouzakis wrestle earlier this season. I don't see anyway that match was beneficial for Bouzakis this season. He took a pointless loss.

  11. There's no reason for this match to occur. That is why I would be shocked if it did. Why would you burn a year of Ferrari's eligibility with Keckeisen and Starocci in the field when he could potentially be a title threat as a freshman next year?

  13. He also never placed higher than 5th at 174, jumped 2 weights, and made it to the finals. Studs like Brooks, Hidlay, Nickal all made significant jumps in bonus rates going up to 197. It's just not an elite weight class. We've had one, J'Den Cox, true 197 pounder in the last decade that is world class. Could add Snyder if he didn't make that early transition to 97kg

  14. Nick Heflin only had a ~25% bonus rate after going up to 197.

  16. I believe Ben said last time he was on FRL that Aedon should be a 184 he's just never cut weight. Not sure if that meant he will never cut weight or he's just not prioritizing it this year since hes red shirting. realistically I think he could crack the top 5 at 184 although there are definitely defensive issues and mental lapses at times hes given up 10+ points on 4 different occasions this season I believe.

  19. It was all Buch. Takedown in the first with a tilt to go up 6-0 going into the second. Ended up scoring a couple more times, I believe it was 14-1 when Buch took a shot in the 3rd and Sinclair downblocked straight into an armdrag Scoring. 1st: 3 TD and 3 NF for Buch at the end of the first.. riding time well over a minute. 2nd :ESC Buchanon to make it 7-0, pretty clean TD to finish to make it 10-0, escape Sinclair.. he doesn't get into his stance as he circles to face Buchanon and he gets immediately doubled to make it 13-1. 3rd: Sinclair takes neutral, Buchanon takes a shot, Sinclair downblocks directly into an armdrag for a td.. escape Buchanon 14-4. Neither guys gets close to a score in the last minute and with riding time you have the final 15-4. Figured you might want more than just the final score for the prized Mizz Freshman.

  20. Pretty sure the first MFF in a tournament would normally count as a loss, but that matches against teammates do not count at all.

  29. In the silver brackets over to the Soldier Salute, they have this: "Double-elimination -- players that lose their first round gets consolation match." If I ever go postal, you'll probably hear on CNN about the guy holed up with hostages demanding that announcers and brackets and everybody else involved STOP referring to wrestlers as players. Also, there'll be some kind of demand about getting verb/noun agreement and spelling the name "Zac Braunagel" and not "Zach Braunagel."

  33. This is not true. In a twist of irony they found donors through organizations for the protests to be Biden supporters like George Soros, David Rockefeller Jr, the Prtizker's, etc. All Biden donors and this isn't some Alex Jones conspiracy. It was very well documented

  36. Pure speculation, but with him going to a different tournament than the rest of his team I wouldn’t be surprised if he hits the portal. I just wouldn’t be so quick to assume that Iowa would be the favorites to land him if that happens.

  40. Yeah, that was a pretty compelling and damning argument against going to Iowa. I don't really understand the debate here. I don't believe any Iowa Wrestling fan is actually happy with the "other than Penn State," asterisk that they keep using, or the 'what about Mesenbrink, Kerk...." I don't think anyone's saying the problem with Iowa is that they're recruiting guys like Woods or Teamer who were AAs, the problem is...they haven't done nearly as well at getting their own blue-chip recruits to come in and have a lot of immediate success. This Iowa. It's like Alabama Football. Does anyone think 'Bama is going to suddenly become alright with, 'well, other than Georgia how many team shave been better?' Brands started off his run at Iowa with the Va Tech 5. Those were 5 High School studs who came to Wrestle for him. That they had to transfer after sitting a year(like Mesenbrink or Kerk) isn't the point. Just as with Metcalf, Borschel, neither used a year of eligibility elsewhere. Penn State and Ohio State were always underachieving given the in-state talent. Iowa to a lesser extent, Okie State got the blue chip recruits because that's where you went if you wanted to be a part of something bigger, wanted to win multiple titles, team titles and maybe have international success. Now that Cael and Ryan are getting those blue chip recruits, it seems like Iowa needs something else. Okie State went and got David Taylor and certainly seems to be on the right track, but...Iowa appears like they're falling behind and using the money they have to buy a few guys each year who were high AAs. That'll keep a program like Iowa in the team trophy race, but...I'm not sure it's going to get them back to where they expect to be(unless they don't expect to be there any longer). Perhaps Bassett, Forrest and Ross end up at Iowa and can help get Iowa back to the Mt top. It's also help if Arnold, Ferrari and Keuter all live up to their potential and then stick around and pursue careers with the HWC at the Sr level. That'd be a massive boost. And before the "Iowa hater/PSU fan," comes out, I'm neither. I am amazed at what PSU is doing...but I grew up doing the same with Iowa...I just see the gap widening between them and PSU while it appears to be closing with the OSU's behind them. If it was JUST about picking up transfers, we'd be talking about Michigan.

  45. Losing a middleweight to add a weight between 197 and heavyweight won’t grow total participants. Raise 197 if you want to make the weights closer to international, don’t add one unless you’re suggesting 11 NCAA weights.
