I created this graphic aboutr a year ago, but figured it was time to up date it for the presumption that Gable Steveson would become a three timer. Since I used wrestlestat data for things like the average time for a techfall or pinfall and the rank of defeated wrestlers, I limited the analysis to 2014 - present. With the exception of Alex Dieringer, whose career began in 2013. For him I dug around to get win and bonus totals, but used the 2014 - 2016 wrestlestat data for time and rank. So, perhaps those are a little better than they should be. For Steveson I assumed he would run the table, but maintain his historic bonus rates and finish with 23.5 NCAA points (he had 24.5 and 22.5 in his two title years). Reducing that number salad to rankings per category we can get a better idea of relative career ranks. Using these metrics Steveson ranks third best, behind Jason Nolf and Bo Nickal, but just ahead of Zain Retherford. Of course this ignores gold medals won while still having college eligibility remaining. Reasonable minds might not want to do that.3 points

When a wrestler takes a redshirt is a factor. Gable’s losses were as a true freshman having not taken a redshirt. Nolf and Nickal had redshirt true freshman losses that are not part of this data.2 points

Great job everyone. It was a pretty chill couple of days. That will 100% be short lived. Including myself, who will 100% go overboard at some point. We all have our moments. Just remember we're all good people on here. That care about our country and culture. Case in point - @VakAttack you're my dude. I know i go hard on you sometimes. We are diametrically opposed on most political issues. But I'd do anything for ya.2 points

I'm anti-poaching of guys who weren't looking to transfer, and I'm anti recruiting-over of homegrown guys who put in the time and achieved a high degree of success. I have been, and will continue to be, vocally critical of any and every coach/program that does that. The fact that these abhorrent practices happen to overlap with my general dislike of Iowa is mere fortuity.2 points

no official position right now, he has to wait until his OSU contract is done. I THINK that goes down this summer, do not quote me on that. But he has been doing a lot of one on one's with several of the kids. I am told he is really good at telling them what shots and style fits them best (the younger kids) and I am also told he is amazing at game planning. I would be shocked if he does not end up full time on the staff. I was not a big fan while he was at OSU, but I only seen the off the mat stuff. I can see now why Lockett, Carroll, Thompson and some of these kids like him as a coach.2 points

I'm thankful someone told my ancestors to "go west" so I didn't have to grow up in Jersey.2 points

Given that he lost a match his redshirt season, that is accurate. If he had wrestled his true freshman year as Gable did, Cael would have a loss. On the other side, if Gable had taken a redshirt like Cael, he would have been an undefeated college wrestler - either 3x or 4x depending on what route he may have gone.Perhaps he would have continued on if he knew he could go undefeated and win 4 titles, eclipsing Cael. If things were swapped, we may be talking about Gable being the best of all-time rather than Cael.1 point

Internationally...I guess I'd say '84 is probably the best weight for him. 86KG is ~189...so 197 is between 86 and 97. 92KG is closest to 197, but I am guessing that Sinclair is looking at the Olympic weights(I'd guess the same of Barr, Ryder, Arnold, Ferrari...anyone on that level). Just given his size as it stands today, him cutting to 74KG or ~163 is probably what a lot of guys with Olympic aspirations would do, but he's shown repeatedly, he's not going to make the sport miserable and cut a lot of weight(it's actually a great trend in the sport and I think makes for a better product and better Wrestlers in the long run). That may change as he climbs levels and it's not so easy for him, but I would guess 184, and he wrestles 86KG down the road.1 point

I can't count the Hodge as a real factor. It is so subjective. Is Jason Nolf a lesser wrestler because he never won a Hodge? It is interesting looking at the data. I am not sure where I would rank Lee using my own eye test. As dominant as he was, he is also a guy that was caught staring at the lights multiple times.1 point

What is it about the Stillwater visit that convinced him to eliminate northern Iowa and is that a bad sign for southern Iowa?1 point

I think he's in no mans land. I have a feeling he's tired of cutting weight. He tried to move up to 184 last year and lost the wrestle off to Negron. Took awhile for him to work his way back down. Tried 184 again this year but I don't think he can beat the JC champion who transferred in. He's wrestled some in open tournaments and is 1-5. I've watched him for 3-4 years now. Seems like a good kid and doesn't give up but he's cursed with a bad body and limited skills.1 point

From a strictly dietary standpoint I’m sure you can get enough protein. Not all protein is created equal though. Meat is the ultimate source for building and maintaining muscle.1 point

I remember when we first saw Hasimikov walk out to wrestle- ('79 San Diego) - One of us said- How are you supposed to wrestle THAT!?1 point

He was 100% outcoached, though not as thoroughly as last year where Dresser et al. just forgot what riding time was.1 point

It’s not like I’m trying to pass this off as news. It’s funny. And maybe even true. But it’s not news. Worth a watch too lol. For the record there is no evidence she drinks Hennessy. Can you even get it in India? https://www.tiktok.com/t/ZTYkXDVhv/1 point

Short of Mexico deploying their military to the border, which is as impractical as us doing it, no you are not going to stop people from doing it. Even if you did that, people would figure out a way around it. Which is why the whole "seal the border" makes no sense. I don't think people realize what doing something like that would actually do, and it would go very very badly for a lot of people. Ostensibly the point of border patrol is to make sure people who don't have a visa or anything don't come into the country. Which is fine if you have say a hostile neighbor. Instead we're just villainizing desperate poor people who are mostly looking to avoid living in extreme poverty. So we are wasting money and resources to protect us from people who want to come here to do menial jobs? And I'm sure you'll say that drugs and trouble come across. I'm sure that along people willing to risk their life to come here and wash dishes at Olive Garden, some have probably less than sterling criminal histories. Drugs on the other hand, the huge majority come through legal ports of entry. So even if you could stop a few enterprising people who think lugging a 50 pound pack of drugs across an unforgiving desert is a good idea, you wouldn't make a dent in drugs coming into this country. The days of guys like Sal Maglua, Jon Roberts, Willy Falcon, Mickey Munday, etc are long over.1 point

I am deeply thankful that we have permission to speak freely again, that local high school wrestling starts next week, and that my family is in good health. The smoked cowboy lollipops will be delicious. Today is a beautiful day and I am happy for it. What are you grateful for?1 point

Nope. I owe you an apology. I mis-read this sentence: The fact you did not say you already knew this leads me to think you did not know... I missed the first "not" and flew off the handle. I am sorry for falsely accusung you. That is something I try not to do, but failed at in this instance.1 point

Everyone brings up the Slav win which was awesome, but they always fail to mention that he lost to Cardenas 13-6 and Beard 20-6. The Barr match was also 2-1 with 40 seconds to go and cochran was in on a shot that I will say Barr maneuvered out of masterfully. As far as the Mirasola win goes I think it more so shows that he is not where I thought he would be coming out of high school. Sinclair teched him at senior trials and then sinclair went on to lose to Andy smith pretty badly so I think we may have had too high of expectations for those guys. I do think Barr is absolutely in contention to AA but with as deep as 197 is this year I am not placing him high on my podium at least not yet.1 point
