  3. Here is why I think $500k is puffery. North Dakota State dominates FCS football. They have won 17 national titles. They last won in 2021 and made the finals in 2022 and the semis in 2023. They have their players poached on an annual basis. In a recent interview their coach talked about this. He said he advises his guys to ignore the $100k offers that come from Group of 5 conference schools, bet on themselves, spend another year at NDSU and try to get a $500k offer from a Power 5 conference school. If football players are getting offered $500k to go to top programs, I just do not see a wrestler getting offered $500k. Sure there are QBs getting a lot more than that, but QB is a class of its own even within football. As for the scholarship offer argument, the analysis I have seen is wrong. Let's say a wrestler stays put at SDSU and keeps his scholarship. That is worth about $23k for a year. If instead, he transfers to Iowa and gets $100k, but has to pay for college, that costs about $46k per year, or $23k per semester. If he goes for a full year he nets $54k ($77k if only a semester). Will he get $50 - $75k in NIL to stay at SDSU? Is $50 - $75k enough to get him to move? Remember, we are talking about a college kid who hasn't sniffed $50k in his life, and is likely to make that about that much coming out of SDSU with a construction management degree. So it is like getting another year of salary. Here is another reason I think $500k is not happening. If the offers really are for $500k for one year or one semester, then I would say someone is a fool for not taking it. If you are a PSU wrestler and someone offers you $500k to switch schools, then you have to do it. Until you see someone leaving PSU, or Iowa, or OSU to go to one of the others, I just do not believe $500k is real.

  5. overall take aways I thought everyone looked great. Medals shook out relatively how I predicted I knew the kid from Japan was good at 61kg but I was not aware he won their senior nationals in December and made the finals at 65kg to qualify for the olympics against Kiyooka. Overall I think the guys that impressed me the most did not even win gold. Keuter did better than any american that has wrestled Masoumi which includes Parris and Feldman. Blaze kind of dismantled Abbasov who is a 2x euro champ and 3x finalist and had previously beaten Davino 5-0. Barr was able to go 6 minutes with a russian nats champ who beat the world champ from last year in the finals. Whats potentially most impressive about this team is that I believe 7 of our 10 guys still have at least 1 year of junior eligibility left and most have 2. As far as the other nations go when Japan has someone who is good they seem to be really really really good. Its interesting to me how they either seem to win gold or not place. Russia is still very good but we really seem to have an edge over them at the age levels at least over the last few years and I think that is a great sign moving forward. side bar I saw Bassett catching some heat for his semi loss. He wrestles at an insane pace and definitely lets guys get in on his legs. However he just won bronze in his first juniors and has two years left, if he were anyone else people would be talking about how amazing an accomplishment that is. I do think he will struggle a bit with very technical wrestlers who finish quickly at the highest level but if guys don't build a substantial lead on him early they are going to get chased down and he's going to get more physically mature which is only going to help his style.

  7. Athleticism is part of it, but what you just described is cultural. Kids in Spain, France, etc. play in the square after school - I've seen it up close and it was amazing to see the creativity the young kids had to use to avoid all of the obstacles - people, cafe dining areas, dogs, etc. The US isn't behind other countries athletically in soccer, quite the opposite. The biggest deficit the US faces, IMO, is tactically and to a lesser extent, technically. Athleticism helps overcome some deficits, but at the highest levels - especially in the men's game - athleticism can't overcome tactical or technical shortcomings. To me this is all influenced by the early years of learning. Did your first few coaches tell you to pass from point A to point B? Or did they teach you how to be comfortable on the ball so that you can be calm, read the game and make the appropriate pass and/or movements for the situation? It's programming versus ideas. Ideas win in the long run. Structure makes parents feel good, freedom helps kids learn sports in their own way. I do want to distinguish between the men's and women's games because they play out differently. It is far more likely that you can physically overwhelm teams in the women's game than it is the men's game. There is a greater advantage for a women's team to be more athletic than their opponent than there is on the men's side. BUT...that's not enough at the top end, as the US found out last World Cup. The Olympics was a vastly different approach for the US women and showed what superior athleticism coupled with tactical acumen can do. I think @Jim L is correct that coaching (training methods) and competition are major factors, in addition to the local cultural influences.

  15. Trump was asked at his "policy speech" if he would commit to reducing the costs for child care and what policies he would enact. His response: "Well, I would do that, and we’re sitting down — you know, I was, uh, somebody, we had Sen. Marco Rubio and my daughter, Ivanka, was so, uh, impactful on that issue. It’s a very important issue. But I think when you talk about the kind of numbers that I’m talking about, that — because child care is child care. It’s, couldn’t — you know, it’s something, you have to have it. In this country, you have to have it. But when you talk about those numbers compared to the kind of numbers that I’m talking about by taxing foreign nations at levels that they’re not used to but they’ll get used to it very quickly. And it’s not going to stop them from doing business with us, but they’ll have a very substantial tax when they send product into our country. Those numbers are so much bigger than any numbers that we’re talking about, including child care, that it’s gonna take care. We’re gonna have — I, I look forward to having no deficits within a fairly short period of time. Coupled with, uh, the reductions that I told you about on waste and fraud and all of the other things that are going on in our country — because I have to say with child care, I want to stay with childcare, but those numbers are small relative to the kind of economic numbers that I’m talking about, including growth. But growth also headed up by what the plan is that I just, uh, that I just told you about. We’re gonna be taking in trillions of dollars, and as much as childcare is talked about as being expensive, it’s, relatively speaking, not very expensive compared to the kind of numbers we’ll be taking in. We’re going to make this into an incredible country that can afford to take care of its people and then we’ll worry about the rest of the world. Let’s help other people. But we’re gonna take care of our country first. This is about America first. It’s about: Make America great again. We have to do it, because right now we’re a failing nation. So we’ll take care of it. Thank you. Very good question."

  16. I agree with this, but I would ask the question: Which is more satisfying? 10 Top 5, 9 medals, 1 gold 8 Top 5, 7 medals, 3 gold We're very happy, but Iran aren't sulking much either. I admit I'm a little jealous of their 3 golds despite our hardware. Absolutely valid question. But my initial thought is that 9 of our 10 guys came home with a medal, maybe not the color of medal they wanted, but it does show what they achieved, and it is an accolade that they will have for the rest of their lives. I thought about getting into the weeds about how some particular matches went, but I figured what was the point, so I just wanted to congratulate our wrestlers, staff, and everyone else who contributed to a job well done.

  20. Ohio State will have 2 different teams. Pre-Christmas OSU 125 - Kilkeary + McCrone 133 - Bouzakis + Davino 141 - Mendez 149 - D’Emilio + Cannon 157- Gallagher 165 - Hepner 174 - Welsh 184 - Rogotzke 197 - Shumate 285 - Feldman Post Season OSU 125 - Kilkeary 133 - Bouzakis 141 - Mendez 149 - Cannon 157- Sasso 165 - Kharchla 174 - Welsh 184 - Rogotzke 197 - Shumate 285 - Feldman i see Kharchla and Sasso coming in second semester and taking 157 and 165. The two weights I have the least confidence is 125 and 149. I could see coaches sending 125,149,157 and 166 to the southern scuffle to finalize those weights for the post season.

  22. I'm saying that if USA Soccer wants to consistently compete with Brazil, France, etc... they need to get those guys who become elite football, basketball, and baseball players. In our culture that ain't happening very often. I guarantee you it does in San Paulo or the suburbs of Paris.

  24. Great showing by the men's free team. 10 of 10 in the semis is great. 1 of 10 getting gold is a bummer, but then again, 9 of 10 came away with medals. My quick take. Lilledahl: Kid is just so cool and consistent. Have we ever had anyone get 4 straight age group world medals? Second win in a row over the Russian who just took 2nd at Russian Nats. A+ Blaze: I thought he'd take gold, but the kid from Japan, Ono, is something special. Slick ankle pick. Wouldn't be surprised to see him as Japan's senior rep at 61kg Worlds. Blaze was otherwise his usual self, stingy on D and opportunistic on O. Bo: Fun to see his high-paced style translate to freestyle success. Probably gave up more points than anyone but also scored more than anyone. His wide-open style makes him beatable in a style where one mistake can enable your opponent to rack up a bunch of points. Not reading too much into his semis loss as gave up a very tight gut position on a TD, and it was game over. Duke: Despite his semis loss he was one of the most impressive. Great attacks from so many positions. Reminds me of Dake. Before this weekend, when was the last time he lost? LaDarion: Kozak is eating crow right now for predicting a DNP finish. C'mon Jon, LaDarion literally teched Shapiro, last year's U20 champ, who beat all these guys! (j/k. Love Kozak's work.) But really, LaDarion looked outstanding, and his 3-3 finals loss was to an Iranian who's been wrestling at a really high level. (What's up with crowding the center though? What US coach is teaching that? Ticked off the Iranian, that's for sure.) Barr: Did way better than I thought he would. Techs to the finals, and held his own against the reigning Russian National champ. Don't see how PSU can sit this kid. Mirasola: Reminds me of a less polished Jake Varner. Semis match was tough to watch... I wanted to slap his opponent for being such a baby, then Mirasola played "can't touch me" for the last 15 seconds and got dinged. Bronze match wasn't very pretty. I see the upside but he could use a redshirt. Rademacher: OK, where the heck did this kid come from? Is this the same kid who got teched by Beard, and got majored by a half-dozen guys last year for Oregon State? Looked strong and polished in all his matches. Can't ding him for losing to a sr. world champ in the semis. Keuter: At first I thought he looked like Ivan Drago, but then I realized that with his upright style he wrestles like what Terry Brands would look like if he were 100 pounds bigger. Anyway, huge props to this kid, who looked very solid, and despite losing in the finals he gave that mountain of an Iranian a closer match than any other American has been able to give him.

  30. Absolutely, but he at least pretended to handle it like a second recruitment. Looks like he might lose his job this year, too. All part of God's plan, I'm sure. The difference with Rivera and Keck is that we have reports of PSU associates initiating contact.

  31. Beat me to it. Also they allegedly contacted Keckheisen and offered him 'an obscene amount of money' to join their squat in '23-'24. Both cases seem to be done with proxies, which may have been legal (who knows what the rules are now, let alone in the past?). However, PSU is definitely in the poaching game. People associated with PSU are actively poaching guys, some of whom were definitely not in the portal.

  32. OSU 125 - Kilkeary 133 - Bouzakis 141 - Mendez 149 - D'Emillio 157- Gallagher 165 - Hepner 174 - Welsh/Kharch 184 - Rogotzke/Welsh 197 - Geog/Shumate 285 - Feldman I like McCrone, I believe Kilkeary gets the early starts and McCrone has to win the spot back. Hepner starts. I can't see Sasso at 65 (which has been mentioned) or Kharch at 84. Maybe Rogotzke RS's and Welsh goes 84? Geog / Shumate is a push for me. 65 to 97 depends on too many things to be sure of anything...

  36. RL, Here are 3 of the 34 counts against Trump . THE GRAND JURY OF THE COUNTY OF NEW YORK, by this indictment, accuses the defendant of the crime of FALSIFYING BUSINESS RECORDS IN THE FIRST DEGREE, in violation of Penal Law §175.10, committed as follows: The defendant, in the County of New York and elsewhere, on or about February 14, 2017, with intent to defraud and intent to commit another crime and aid and conceal the commission thereof, made and caused a false entry in the business records of an enterprise, to wit, an invoice from Michael Cohen dated February 14, 2017, marked as a record of the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, and kept and maintained by the Trump Organization. SECOND COUNT: AND THE GRAND JURY AFORESAID, by this indictment, further accuses the defendant of the crime of FALSIFYING BUSINESS RECORDS IN THE FIRST DEGREE, in violation of Penal Law §175.10, committed as follows: The defendant, in the County of New York and elsewhere, on or about February 14, 2017, with intent to defraud and intent to commit another crime and aid and conceal the commission thereof, made and caused a false entry in the business records of an enterprise, to wit, an entry in the Detail General Ledger for the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, bearing voucher number 842457, and kept and maintained by the Trump Organization. THIRD COUNT: AND THE GRAND JURY AFORESAID, by this indictment, further accuses the defendant of the crime of FALSIFYING BUSINESS RECORDS IN THE FIRST DEGREE, in violation of Penal Law §175.10, committed as follows: The defendant, in the County of New York and elsewhere, on or about February 14, 2017, with intent to defraud and intent to commit another crime and aid and conceal the commission thereof, made and caused a false entry in the business records of an enterprise, to wit, an entry in the Detail General Ledger for the Donald J. Trump Revocable Trust, bearing voucher number 842460, and kept and maintained by the Trump Organization. The other 31 counts read similarly. In order to secure a felony conviction, Trump had to falsify records AND something else. Based on these indictment counts, what did Trump do to make these felony items? Please be specific. If you don't want to do that, please be specific on what the jury found to make these felony items. I submit to you that the indictment does not specificly allege any action that Trump took to make these felonies. When does that ever happen? Amendment 6 of the Constitution states: In all criminal prosecutions, the accused shall enjoy the right to a speedy and public trial, by an impartial jury of the state and district wherein the crime shall have been committed, which district shall have been previously ascertained by law, and to be informed of the nature and cause of the accusation; to be confronted with the witnesses against him; to have compulsory process for obtaining witnesses in his favor, and to have the assistance of counsel for his defense. With those indictments, can you honestly say Trump was informed of the nature and cause of the accusation? Of course you will say so, but if you are being honest, you cannot say that. What specifically does the indictment say he did? It doesn't. And that is the fact. mspart
