https://vault.si.com/vault/1975/02/24/driving-up-with-a-compact-carr I'm sure very few of you ever had the pleasure of watching Jimmy Carr (Erie, Pa. and Univ of Ky). I have a long and interesting history with the Carr family dating back to 1975. Great people, great competitors. I believe that if Jimmy hadn't started training year round at such an early age, he would have been the next Gable or Sanderson. Just an incredible talent. Balance, technique, speed, strength, smarts...just an incredible athlete. I know from spending time reading comments on various websites, that no one from any era could have been good enough to compete with wrestlers today...I would vigorously dispute that precept because of folks like Jimmy (and others of course).4 points

Clearly the concern is overblown, he loked fine, nothing to worry about, was able to read the press names in proper order. With Putin as Ukraine President and Trump as the new VP the war will be over and Euro and US have nothing to worry about. A great night for the USA and Europe!4 points

Indeed. The ultimate goal for a kid that was a serious wrestler in the early/mid eighties was the Olympics( maybe that has changed). There was nothing bigger to us. Attended many World Cups when they were held in Toledo when the Soviets were there, they were great, but they weren't the Olympics.2 points

I understand what you are saying. I would say there is more to being a successful coach than just imparting the techniques that made you a champion. I guess we will find out if this is a good hire or not. At least we know he is a good character guy and has walked the walk himself. That's a good start.2 points

U of New Orleans' AD was at the Collegiate Duals in December of 2022 which took place in New Orleans. He seemed to be very engaged and talking to a lot of different wrestling-related people. Didn't appear to be a guy that was just invited there and hanging out for a few minutes, so I was hoping maybe that would be the case.2 points

Attendance numbers are out.... credit to @CraigOR. I feel that collegiate sports are in general coming to an end. Now that the cat has been let out of the bag as far as paying for athletes it will probably take the same route other business takes. Business isn’t worried about anything besides money.1 point

Biden claimed he has more blacks on White House staff/admin than all the other Presidents combined. IDK seems a bit hard to believe considering Obama, Clinton (1st black pres), Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, James Monroe, John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, Martin Van Buren, John Tyler, James K. Polk, and Zachary Taylor. What say all: true, bit of embellishment or out right lie? Was @nhs67 asked to serve on Biden staff or have inside intel?1 point

Not trying to sh*t on them, just countering your point that they were 5th despite only had two meets, plus showing off my top notch math skills. 1,940 for a meet does not seem terrible either, especially compared to some of the other "big-time" programs1 point

If you've never been to the Olympics, you may never understand. The aura is totally different. It can't be matched in any other arena.1 point

Private equity could be a huge problem for anything that doesn't generate a profit. Private equity gets paid based on increasing the value of the investment. If you cut off a part that costs more than it generates it would seem that the overall value has increased. Some pretty historic programs still reside in the Big 12 - OSU, ISU, ASU, and WVU. Losing even one would be the biggest program drop in years if not ever. No school that has won a team title at the D1 level has ever dropped the program.1 point

Your comparison does not make sense. It isn't like buying a mom and pop. It is like a mom and pop buying the Walmart. Walmart is the bigger name. You can try to argue about wrestling being bigger than the Olympics, but that just simply is not true. You are entitled to your opinion. However, I feel it must be mentioned that your opinion can also be wrong - which it is in this case.1 point

@Hammerlock3 to add on to this check all your windows and exterior doors. Caulk where necessary. Check your window panes and make sure they are up to snuff. Weather strip all your exterior doors. Homeowners waste a lot of money on heating and cooling due to poor maintenance on easy fixes1 point

I got all my national wrestling news from the monthly periodicals, AAU Wrestling News being the most notable. I remember features about Andre Metzger, TJ Jaworsky, Kendall Cross, and more locally Matt Demaray and Corey Olsen.1 point

I think a World Cup with Russia,USA,Iran,Azerbijan,Japan,Mongolia would be really really awesome. I honestly think Iran could have as good of if not a better team than Russia this year they can win 65,86,125 pretty realistically. With an outside shot at 97.1 point

Agreed. In no universe is one team vs another team bigger than…we’ll call it 16 of the top 20…wrestlers in the world in the grand event that you only get one opportunity in four years. You could do two duals a week no problem. Which..would be fun, but…1 point

We will see no NCAA sooner than a league influx of programs. burn it down, separate by amateur (non-revenue) and professional (revenue with revenue sharing), and get back to it.1 point

Easy answer is the Olympics. I am not going to be blinded by whatever political nonsense is going on. Every kid who loves wrestling grows up dreaming of the Olympics - not wrestling Russia in a dual.1 point

Kolat is not in trouble. He is 3-1 against Army. As previously mentioned, that goes a long way. Navy is not a trophy school. As far as being like Henson, I disagree. They are night and day. Henson got himself caught up in some questionable behavior at WVU. Kolat has far more integrity as a person and coach. That goes a long way. My two cents.1 point

J'Den is an athletic specimen, no doubt. But to me, that's why he's a good fit for this job, where he'll be coaching other guys with superior athleticism. He can help athletes learn how to use it, as he did. You don't get to be a multi-time world champ on athleticism alone. Nor do I think J'Den relied on his athleticism any more than our other top guys, or is even a better athlete than them. Look at our Olympic team. Lee, Zain, Dake, Brooks, Kyle, Mason... all exceptional athletic specimens. I also don't see how you can criticize the quality of his offense, as his technique is pristine and he had an extremely high conversion rate. It's true that he didn't put as many points on the board as other top guys, but I think that's because he knew he didn't need to, since his defense is so good -- and the name of the game is to score more than your opponent. Those are valuable lessons at the international level. I'd be more inclined to agree if he were being brought in as a high school coach or lower-tier college coach, as I have no doubt it can be tough to teach how to make a technique work to one who lacks your athleticism. Anyway, I guess we'll see, but I'm glad to see him on board.1 point

Something I always find issues with is drainage around the foundation. Backfill settles, homeowners add landscaping rock and mulch, rainwater from the roof washes away material, and before you know it, water is flowing towards the foundation.1 point

Did T-Mobile in our current home and had, at a time not long ago, three gamers in the house; all streaming (Hulu, Netflix, etc no cable or dish) on the TV; and a remote worker. Have never had any problems. So for whatever it’s worth….1 point

T-Mobile has a 5G home internet plan as well. It was plenty fast when I did the test drive (caveat, I don't game), but didn't play nicely with the work VPN. Overall, if you can get fiber, I think that's still the way to go even if it's more expensive. I have AT&T and it has been solid.1 point

We moved a year ago, initially only one option but couple months ago Verizon Home 5g became available. Its half the cost of our previous and at least twice the speed. Others in our area on Starlink if you have data access think VzH5g better.1 point

A dual would be pretty awesome, but we are talking about the Olympics. Despite some of the #1's not being present, I'll still watch and enjoy Olympic competition. Sure, 57/74/86 and 97 wouldn't be as stacked, as well as the GR/WFS categories, but it's wrestling. We watched the 2022 worlds without Russia/Belarus and these Olympics probably won't be much different.1 point

Had an interesting group conversation at work yesterday morning, following the four day 4th of July weekend. What everyone was talking about, was what most of the discussions were at the various holiday celebrations throughout the weekend, particularly as it pertained to issues in our country. The central theme to that was in those weekend discussions, we all agreed we didn’t hear people talking about the border, or gender identity, or gun laws….we heard people talking about the parks, about the good things going on in their schools, about the kids going into their colleges and trades. I can honestly say I didn’t hear the words immigration or abortion the entire weekend, and many of my co workers had the same experience. (Keeping in mind as well that we work in government). So it just reinforced to me that the vast majority of Americans, and their daily concerns, do not at all revolve around what the people on TV and podcasts tell us we should really be up in arms about. They may spit about it online in their various venting forums, but when it comes down to daily life, the clickbait concerns are not all ‘our’ concerns, but more the concerns of those wanting to push the buttons. A small percentage follows the little herd, but they are extremely loud so they just seem like a bigger crowd than they really are.1 point

Pat Downey Junior College champ (2015) 1x D1 AA (5th at 197 in 2016) Junior world silver in freestyle (2012) US senior open champ (2019) US World Team Member Freestyle 2019 Wins include Jared Haught, Drew Foster, Kenny Courts, Quentin Wright, Robert Hamlin, Sammy Brooks, Tyrell Todd, Tyler Caldwell, Josh Asper, Gabe Dean, Kyle Crutchmer, Brett Pfarr, Myles Martin, Nick Heflin, Joe Rau, Ethan Ramos, and Aaron Brooks. Most of those came in freestyle as he only wrestled 22 times over two seasons in NCAA competition. I'm pretty sure Downey has a bachelor's degree from ISU and an associates from ICCC. AJ Ferrari 1 x D1 AA (1st at 197 2021) Cadet World Bronze in Freestyle (2018) Ferrari's wins include Younger Bastida, Jake Woodley, Stephen Buchanan, Tanner Sloan, Jacob Warner, Myles Amine, and Nino Bonaccorsi. Those were all in NCAA competition and Ferrari didn't compete much more than Downey with only 30 NCAA matches over 2 seasons. Pretty sure Ferrari doesn't have a college degree. I'd say Downey has the both the better wrestling and academic accomplishments. Some might value Ferrari's NCAA title over Downey's freestyle accomplishments, but I am not among them. Academically Downey is the only one with a degree and he has two of them. He might also have some graduate coursework completed. These factors favor Downey. On the other hand Downey has the more extensive rap sheet. Probably was arrested at least 2x as many times as Ferrari. Whilst Ferrari has been successful in getting his criminal charges dropped and expunged Downey plead guilty to at least one of his assault charges in high school. Financially my impression is that Downey is perpetually broke and Ferrari makes decent money via his social media following. The wealth difference might also partially explain their relative success in defending their criminal charges. Overall these factors favor Ferrari.1 point
