  1. Most athletic programs operate at a loss. The NIL will still be the main thing that lures wrestlers. The schools themselves don't have extra money to be giving out 100k to athletes. The schools that do have huge football programs that make their money, and even then, I think we are going to see inner battles to sharing that pot to cover operating costs of other programs. Alabama rakes in money, but they don't even have wrestling. LSU, Texas, Georgia, etc. all make a lot of money to cover the short fall of programs and then some, but they don't have wrestling. This is going to end up being more about football and basketball, which of course is what is driving this whole mess. On another note, the wrestling programs that do have money in their actual program budget are the same teams that have big donors for NIL. The rich get richer with this in one sense, but in another it's just the same programs, with the same big donors. Overall, I agree, and I have always said that this is bad for wrestling in the long run.

  6. Almost every athletic program does NOT bring in enough money to even cover the operating costs let alone have money to give athletes. But, let's pretend they do......Of all the sports teams, both men's and women's teams, how does the school decide which athletes get money and how much? As @ionel pointed out, there will be equity issues. Is football, basketball and any other big program at a school willing to share all their profits to pay out everyone? Is it straight across the board money? Lot's of problems.

  13. Women's wrestling should take the lead and become a 1 semester season. Start in January and end in April with the championships set away from the Men's wrestling and BB tourneys. If it gains traction it could lead to Men Wrestling following.

  14. Interesting article on Dake today about turning down a massive offer to coach. He will be the next big name head coach next Spring. Appears this is the final ride. As a side note - Read that it was Ok State before Smith decided to come back for one more year. However, I need to find where that was said. https://www.cnbc.com/2024/05/24/us-olympian-turned-down-massive-job-to-pursue-gold-medal-dream.html

  16. A man who “illegally” entered the United States through the southern border warned in an interview that Americans should be “worried” about how wide open the border is under President Joe Biden. The Turkish man told Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin that he had to pay a Mexican drug cartel $10,000 to smuggle him into the U.S. “In fact, American people is right, completely true,” the man said. “Who comes into this country? They don’t know.” “Okay, I’m good, but how if they’re not good?” he asked as he motioned to other migrants who were with him. “How if they’re killers, psychopath, else? No guarantee of that. Like, no security, no security check, no background check.” He said that he was worried about who was crossing the border because there are many people who “are not normal.”

  19. The expected revenue sharing per school under the settlement is $20 million. Over 150 schools in the list had revenue over $20 million. If your point is that for most schools the expenses are greater than or equal to the revenue that is misleading. These are non profit corporations. They spend what they take in. It's a feature of the system. Since they were not sharing this revenue in a meaningful way with the players, the revenue was taken in web to either the school, the coaches, administrators, and support staff. These groups will obviously have to take a haircut to share the revenue with the players. It was exploitive that they were able to keep it all for all these years.

  22. I don't know about everyone, its working really well right now though. despite how common it is, its really hard to teach. Two years ago I was "wrestling" (I was getting killed so badly that term might not be appropriate) an AA who isn't even known as a collar tie guy and his felt like an iron lego snapping onto my head. I had people on my head maybe a million times and never felt anything like it. It wasn't more than ten years ago that I heard a lot of prominent coaches be very wary about letting some athletes touch the head at all, because there are a lot of very effective counters, but PSU has definitively shown that the pros outweigh that danger...

  28. This will mean the end of competitive D1 wrestling, not that it's actually been all that competitive for the last 20 years or so since realistically only 3 or 4 teams even have a chance of making the podium anyway. Now schools will just buy the best wrestlers. Who has the most money in D1 that has a wrestling program? Ohio State does. Michigan is 2nd among schools with wrestling programs. Coaching will be at a premium, but the little schools will all suffer. I predict over time that the rankings of the best wrestling schools will line up fairly precisely with those schools revenue with minor variations due to the ability of the coaches.

  29. He says he’s not enrolling until fall 2025, and plans to be at 149. Interesting thread actually… https://iowa.forums.rivals.com/threads/otto-black-commits-to-iowa.441962/ I do like the theory of if he can get Iowa fans to care about Greco then that could help with the overall support for Greco. Then another Iowa fan suggested some of their other guys try Greco to which of course LJB basically said they would suck without first training in it for awhile

  32. I am aware of everything that led up to the FBI's visits. I'm just extremely disappointed in the way the DOJ handled both of these cases. I'm disappointed in President Trump and his lawyers for their poor judgement in handling this matter. I'm surprised that President Biden could have so many documents in his house, at U Penn office and the beach house for decades. Documents that a senator or vice president are not allowed to have outside of the SKIF, little alone take them home. I'm very curious about the material or documents in the 1850 boxes Joe gave to the University of Delaware University. The boxes are not allowed to be opened until 2 years after his death.

  36. I pointed this out a while ago. When I was in grad school at VT, a friend got his PhD in Biomedical Engineering. MS before that. He loved the program at VT. 37. Bearclaw is a type of Danish. California has the most Danes among all US States. So most likely Cal Baptist, Cal Poly, Stanford, or Bakersfield. Bakersfield seems more appropriate for a pastry Although his home state of Utah has most Danes per capita, so perhaps Utah Valley?

  40. A big supporter of Women’s Wrestling … but … please don’t combine them into one Site/Tournament. Missouri did this for their HS State Tournament and essentially RUINED what had been an awesome & entertaining event for the last 40 years. Radically changing the format, accelerating rounds & separating the Boys Classes to different days just felt like a hurried, half-baked, disorganized, cheapened version of its former self. I fear the same would eventually happen to the NCAA D1 Tourney if they were to entertain this idea.

  43. Many years ago, I spent an afternoon with Grace Thorpe, Jim's daugther, in Yale, OK. She told me that her father loved to wrestle a "backyard style" and never was defeated. Pretty interesting. Also, Bob Mathias belongs in any conversation about the greatest athlete ever. He won the Olympic decathlon gold medal in London in 1948 at AGE 17 -- and won again four years later. He told me that he wanted to go again in 1956 but he was ruled ineligible by the AAU for starriing in a movie about his own life. He was also a star running back at Stanford and played in the Rose Bowl. Glen Brand, 1948 Olympic wrestling champion, told me he was in awe of Mathias when he won the decathlon in 1948 and Glen considered Mathias the best athlete he ever saw.
