We were all predicting that 125 this year would be bedlam. And it was. Depending on which service you follow, there were 6 or 7 different #1's throughout the season. And the #1 seed, Braeden Davis, failed to AA. That has only happened five other times in the last 20 years. And it has only happened one other time since seeding was expanded to 16 in 2014. By almost any measure the bracket was pretty well busted. Four of the wrestlers seeded in the top 8 failed to AA (#1, #4, #6, #7). And the sum of the seeds that did AA was 78 (2+3+5+8+10+12+15+23). But that only makes it the fourth most busted bracket since 2014: For this I went conservative and used 17 as a plug number for the unseeded. Unsurprisingly, 2021 with all of its weirdness was the most busted year. edit: fixed year table6 points

I've avoided commenting as maybe the only NU alum/ex wrestler on here, but I agree with much of what was said. I think the loss of assistants has hurt. I think the mass transfer hurt. The graduation of Deakin and Yahya hurt. From the private school in the B10 that could compete with the big boys, we sort of fell off a cliff, and lost that shine. I think Matt is a good coach and the kids like him. But in the NIL area things are going to be tougher. We're not going to get top-level transfers unless they want a top level grad school - and no one is going to go to NU Law or Kellogg and have the time to be a top B10 wrestler. As for academics, I can see kids thinking that school might cut into their training time, but that's not gonna change. Stanford has the problem to an even greater degree, and they are managing. No simple solutions here. Going to take a lot of incremental steps and then hopefully a breakthrough with a few kids who can put the shine back on the program.3 points

Chattanooga... Chattanooga...Chattanooga... Chattanooga had a very young roster last year and return basically everyone except Brayden Palmer and broke the ten win barrier for the first time in nearly ten years. Here is what their starters looked like this year... 125 - SR, 17W - 4L 133 - SO, 18W - 6L 141 - FR, 25W - 4L 149 - JR, 13W - 4L 157 - JR, 11W - 4L 165 - FR, 17W - 11L 174 - FR, 17W - 8L 184 - SO, 5W - 8L 197 - FR, 7W - 8L 285 - JR, 6W - 12L One thing to note is that I did leave the names off... that was deliberate. I wanted you to see the numbers as only numbers. Many of these gents were only a match away from qualifying and won two or three matches at their conference championships, as it were. Now 184 is deceiving in that the kid who ended the season started it at 157lbs, so some lineup shuffling and the weights will fall right in to place. Especially if they can get a transfer along the lines of a Rocky Jordan in. One of their redshirt frosh at 125 is a pinner, and that looks promising, especially in a dual sense, but they have two guys coming off redshirt that will be vying for the spot there as well as a two year starter returning to the lineup after being displaced by Palmer dropping. This lineup, with a replacement at 125 and perhaps a small shuffle in the 165-184 range, has potential to grow together and increase their peak wins, which is typical year after year. Those 17W should become low to mid 20s and those Ls should be about the same (assuming they qualify for NCAAs and take 2-3 losses there as well). I think this team could challenge both App State and Chattanooga, especially in a dual format (5 of their first 7 matches against Campbell were one takedown, close decision losses). I hope the coaching staff is out their shooting their shot with the likes of Billy Janzer (Rutgers 184/197), Kraisser (Iowa State ~157), Alvarez (OSU, Rutgers 141-165 ), and the two Navy 125lbers. They land two or even one of them, and that could provide the leadership needed to help with that next step next year.3 points

I'd consult with both Askrens and John Mesenbrink on who to hire as coach. Instead of poaching youth for college within the same state - let the AWA program alone since its running successfully. But make sure you have their view before going forward. The goal is alignment3 points

Using the current method of scoring these are the Top 30 and ties: New to the top 30 this year: Aaron Brooks #10 and tied with Ed Ruth (was #125 prior to this year) Daton Fix #17 by virtue of five tournaments, as you can see he is 125th on a per tournament basis. Carter Starocci #27 (was #128 prior to this year) Also moving up: Vito Arujau was #230, is #51 (tied with Andre Metzger, Rick Bonomo, Mark Branch, and Troy Nickerson) Keegan O'Toole was #190, is #35 (tied with Jordan Oliver) New to the rankings this year: Trent Hidlay #157 with 65 points (Jared Lawrence, Tolly Thompson, Eric Voelker, Chrsi Campbell, Gary Breece, and Rex Peery) Greg Kerkvliet #121 with 69 points (tied with Doug Schwab) Parker Keckeisen #90 with 92 points (tied with Ross Flood, Carlton Haselrig, Mark Lieberman, Chris Pendleton, Travis Lee, and Michael Lightner) I know I will have my detractors here, but I also like to look at their scores in years 2 through 4. You will notice in the table above that when you sort by total you have to go all the way to #30 to find the only three year era wrestler, a little known kid named Dan Gable. In the table below, I also knocked out Gables' pigtail matches for this. Years 2 - 42 points

Obviously some coaching changes could shake up a few rosters and make them seem almost, if not actually entirely different than last year. Given what we see right now and what we could see, I think there are a few teams that come to mind that could make another leap next season... and I don't think either of them are Stanford (with Koll's massive recruiting class) or North Carolina (I think he is at least a season away - if not two - from a trajectory leap there). Cal Poly, Chattanooga, and Illinois. Cal Poly They came in to the season with high expectations and because their upward trajectory didn't seem to pan out and LRA came 'out of nowhere' it can be ignored that they had a comparable season to last year. That is still a massive improvement for 3/4/5 years ago. If they were to play with their lineup a bit and get a solid incoming transfer (or two - ahem Saldate), they could make another step forward. They will need to with OSUW, ASU, and LRA all improving as well. I want to see them land Saldate (I will explain what I, as a fan, want to see below). They either need an incoming 141 125 - Mendez, SO 15W - 12L 133 - Romney, SO 19W - 9L 141 - Heracules Windrath, TrFR - He will need to live to his name... 149 - LEGEND Lamer, SR 15W - 12L 157 - CHANCE Lamer, JR 19W - 7L 165 - Wick, SO 14W - 12L - Coming off Injury 174 - Saldate, SR 25W - 8L - Incoming Grad Transfer 184 - DASCHLE Lamer, FR 8W - 4L 197 - Priest, SR 9W - 9L OR Hodges, FR 4W - 3L 285 - Tinker, JR 11W - 7L Their only true hole will be at 141lbs and I understand their valley could be right where they are now, depending on injuries, but their peak could be an outright P12 title. Saldate a double bump? Why? Because I don't think Wick has the strength, even if he has the length, to go 174lbs. I would be okay with the swap, though. Saldate could have a helluva chance for content on social medias with 'bulking' or whatnot. I think the 'smaller' Lamer brothers swap and both will see an increase in productivity. Big Lamer will wrestle outside his weight class for a season, though. He'll be fine as I think he should focus on 184lbs long-term anyways. Priest? He is a 165lber at heart, but he always gives it his full-go. Anyone else care to give it ago? With a breakdown with hows and whys? Illinois and Chattanooga to follow...2 points

Issues w/ the review: * Destroys the flow of the match; constant stoppages & standing around (the list could very simply end right here); it’s embarrassing * Conditioning aspect is removed; this rewards the naturally gifted as opposed to the grinders * Changes how a wrestler would compete (e.g., a wrestler that is awarded a 3 PT TD will not necessarily wrestle all the way through a position if he feels safe where he is and has already secured points) * Alters the dramatic energy of the final moment; wrestler, coaches, & fan emotions/energy are all paused when the brick comes flying in; the official is on the phone as opposed to raising an excited competitor’s hand (I’m not a fan of over-the-top celebrations but the current disruption is lame) * Holding mats so that the same weight class is contested at the same time; I’m indifferent to this generally speaking – but not when the review is in play. Matches typically wrapped up at the same time before the review. Not now. Just an abundance of nervous pacing and waiting since an official is likely on the phone for at least one of the 8 mats in the lighter weight class (all to silence on the individual ESPN+ mats which foolishly did not have a single announcer present as they used to – an awful step backwards in coverage) Solution: * Remove the review entirely (which would get my vote); or, if absolutely needed… * New challenge rules to make them very few & far between: ^ Limit the number of challenges allowed ^ Drastically deter coaches from throwing the brick (e.g., a lost challenge results in 2 points for the opposing wrestler) ^ The review time-limit would need to be capped at no more than :30 (if more time is needed, it’s simply inconclusive & the call stands); any amount of time over :30 is unacceptable. I think the reality is that even if they were to achieve this – which is a compromise many don’t even want (including me) - we’d still be stuck w/ the follow-up effort to straighten out the clocks, audio/video issues, etc. It will still be a mess. ^ Consider an unsportsmanlike team point deduction for coaches that throw bricks in desperate attempts simply because they have one to burn (official discretion) My .02: I’m a life-long fan of the sport. The actual wrestling was excellent. Unless the review is wiped out or dramatically changed, though, I will be leaving it as a spectator - & I won’t be the only one.2 points

Wisconsin season ticket holder but lifelong Hawkeye fan… I know, right. 1. Wisconsin’s wrestling facilities are abysmal. They sorely need an upgrade. 2. The Badgers simply cannot compete with the NIL capabilities of Penn State and others. What is the answer to increase the collective funding? 3. Like it or not, having Askren “on board with whomever the Badgers might hire is extremely important… losing too many high-quality wrestlers to out-of-state programs. The in-state wrestlers who stay, honestly, are not “those guys!” 4. Attendance at home meets is not amazing… wrestling is most definitely a fringe sport at Madison. Can changing that help grow the program? Gents, these are just my random thoughts about the program; take them for what they are worth.2 points

We can name as many names as we want, but if UW moves on from Bono (which they should) the main requirement for whoever gets hired will be to establish a great relationship with the AWA club. They have so many talented wrestlers that we need to keep in the state. My personal choice would be Ben Askren because the hire would give the program quite a bit of buzz in the wrestling world.2 points

100% agree... I'm not going to bag on Stutzman because he did have some great years by their standards but for them to not sniff an all American in 11 years is kind of rough. Would love to see them at least 2nd behind Cornell in the state vs having Columbia, Long Island and the Binghamton outperforming them.2 points

Aaron Nagao was a transfer to Penn State from Minnesota this season and did not reach the high AA expectations that were placed upon him at the beginning of the season and actually finished worse than last season. This might be Buckeye bias but I saw this dude handle the current 141 national champ and face of the tOSU program, Jesse Mendez, fairly easily. Now you'd look like a fool to think Nagao would be better than Mendez in any capacity. WHAT HAPPENED WITH NAGAO???? Would it be a possibility that getting beat up in the PSU room shot his confidence where he probably beat up on most of the dudes at Minnesota? Anyone have anything to add?1 point

You won't see the Lamer brother's switched... if you are up close you will see why. A two weight bump for Saldate is a BIG jump. I am pretty such Daschle is settled in at 174... I could see it in a couple years, but right now he is not strong enough to bump up I don't see Hercules starting at 141...they need a transfer there. THey could also benefit from a Lujan transfer at 125 and give Mendez another year to develop.1 point

Well, another college wrestling season is in the books. It always seems like it flies by and then you realize how far back November was and you remember how long it really is. We were probably in about week nine of the football season. Halloween candy was still strewn about. The World Series just ended. Ok, you get my point. We go to witness all the heartbreak and triumph. We started out with 17-year-old high school kids tearing up open tournaments and ended with teammates making history by both winning their fourth title. Personally, I thought it was an excellent season with a final tournament to match. So, let's talk about it! 15 years from now, you look back and think about the 2023-2024 season, what’s gonna stick out to you? Dysen Gould Well, the Brock Hardy incident certainly “sticks out” for me right now and years down the road. I can’t remember 15 minutes ago, so I seriously doubt I’ll remember Vance Vombaur placing from the #26 seed. Or Shane Griffith coming back from 5-0 in the quarters. I doubt I’ll remember Parker Keckeisen going bonus all the way through. Or the Chairgate incident between Mekhi Lewis and Ben Pasiuk. I probably won’t recall Mason Beckman making Daniel Cormier nearly quit on live television. Hopefully, I’ll forget Virginia Tech ruining the perfect Jagger Night record. But I will remember that spladle for the rest of my life. Who never technically won NCAA’s but is a national champion in the Jagger personal record book? Rhino That would be you, my friend. You’re a great man. I drunkenly called you on Christmas Eve last year and you loved it. But also, Peyton Robb for what he went through just to come back this year and get on the podium again. And Trent Hidlay for being not only a beast but everything you want in a wrestler and teammate. Austin Gomez for never giving up on his dreams and never holding back out there on the mat. Now he’s earned a trip to the Olympics this summer because of it. And Kevin Claunch for having the guts to wear a sun hat. All champions in my book. How much are we booing Fix at the Olympic Team Trials? Personally, I'm trying to sound like the ghost of 2nd places past every time he steps on the mat. Thicccolas Oh, come on now. I’m probably as guilty as anyone is when it comes to goofing on his longevity, but it’s all in fun. The man is an exceptional wrestler. Over a seven-year run, Daton has five conferences, five AA’s, four finals appearances, multiple Senior world teams, a Senior world finals appearance, and a Junior world title. In an era where guys compete less and less, Daton Fix just never stopped. Yeah, things seemed to take a weird turn last week in all his matches. But he might deserve some applause for everything he has accomplished in his career. Or boo him. I don’t care. You bought the ticket and this is America last I checked. Which outfit was your favorite? Rachel Gallardo I admit I’m partial to the red sweatpants that Earl busted out on Saturday night to honor the Tiger Woods Sunday red. Can the Jays get 90 wins this year? Eric Asselin You do have 28 games against the Yankees and Boston. I’m sure you can conjure up 62 more wins somewhere. Daniel Vogelbach is worth at least ten wins by himself. Will Danny Burgers be an All-Star this year? IndianaMat You just saw me say the guy will lead Toronto to 90 wins. I’m expecting MVP votes. Which school with a coaching opening is the best job? Luke Wise I feel it’s pretty even between CMU and Buffalo with the slight edge to CMU. I just hope both schools give their best effort in looking for the next guy. With so many great coaches in the land and so few D1 jobs, you have more than enough candidates. Hire the guy who is the best fit and not because he went undefeated in his career or something. That stuff never works. And now to close out the regular season mailbag we take it to the newcomer of the year and his never-ending run of questions. Once more, take us home, Burger King of Kings. Who's the coolest wrestling person you've interacted with on Twitter? Old School Wrestling Clips. His rizz level is Anakin Skywalker class. I’ve never seen anything like it. Do you save my unanswered questions, or do you need me to resubmit? It would behoove you to resubmit them. Who are you going to challenge in street league 2024? Not Jesse Mendez. Possibly Hijo de JL Vice. Idiot troll, I bet he says hi to my face. Favorite delay/challenge brick of the tournament? I loved all the delays in the 133 final. I don’t care who knows it. I‘m sure it was awful in the arena but it was perfect from the couch. First off, we were only the third match in so the crowd was properly buzzed to just be raucous. Add in all the online takes and opinions and the fact that this is a common occurrence in Fix matches and it was pure anarchy. Well, that’s going to do it for this week’s bag. Soon I’ll pick the third annual All-Jagger team that still has no actual criteria. Hey, it’s the highest honor we got.1 point

I saw the match online. In the vid, JS was shooting toward the viewer at the dude's left leg. Reinoso, or whoever it was, moves his left leg to the right until he and JS are facing the camera. Then, the Cuban sorta squats on him. JS ends up losing the match. My memory is that the vid is in waay low def, like John Smith vs Alan Fried low def It must be that match from 1990 at Cerro Pelado. . . and the vid is out there or lost in the interether . . . or it's time to go back to my shrink for a refill.1 point

Bono gets the full blame for the program declining because every All American level guy has transferred away from UW except Barnett and the biggest issue is that the state of Wisconsin has a ton of elite high school recruits that all decide to go elsewhere. Some people in the state blame Askren, but the reality is whatever issues Bono and Ben have is Bonos problem because he needs Ben's athletes but Ben doesn't need Bono.1 point

I've watched every televised Buffalo dual over the last two years. He seems to be a very passionate coach with good results from limited resources. I view them as a team in a similar situation to Binghamton, but the Bearcats have been more impressive than the Bulls by a reasonable margin. Buffalo should aim to outperform teams like Binghamton as an appropriate benchmark.1 point

This is tough, are we talking about getting Wisconsin to actually kind of be a program again...or "who is the guy who can come in and make this amongst the best 3 teams in the nation?" In my entire lifetime, Wisconsin has always been the same kind of team...extremely inconsistent across the lineup, but always with a few dudes who the average ncaa qualifer wants nothing to do with. After a brief perusal of AA data, Wisconsin has only had 2 seasons since 1980 with more than 3 AA's, those was 2010 and 2011. The functional high-watermark for the program, which could be something that is an issue at the institutional level instead of the coaching level, is effectively 3 AA's. In that time span since 1980, Wisconsin has had 6 National Champions. Call me crazy badger fans...are you guys a little delusional when it comes to the actual historic strength and institutional support of your program?1 point

i would say Michigan had a good season. That being said, it would appear in this NIL era, Michigan has a strategy of bringing in transfers each year to make their program competitive. As far was getting team trophies, they've got 2 in the past 3 years, this strategy appears to be working. But if they want to contend to with PSU, they will have to start developing their own guys.1 point
