My personal favorite. I am biased because I consider Jayson a friend but truly an amazing match!5 points

I hate those calls. I maintain that instead of the ref awarding points, the match should be restarted with the non-offending wrestler getting choice of position, like after injury time. Like in football or basketball, we can move you closer to the goal line or give you a free throw, but you have to do the actual scoring yourself.4 points

Just a thread to share some memorable NCAA tournament matches/moments. One that always comes to mind for me at this time of year: Mcllravy v. Abas (1993): Many many others—add one if you feel like it.3 points

Since the NCAA ended D2/D3/NAIA wrestlers from competing in the D1 tournament in the early 90s, here are the guys that I am tracking who have AA'd after transferring from a non-D1 & non-JUCO institution. Christian Lance - Ft. Hays Steve Fittery - Shippensburg Bill Stouffer - Grand Valley State Mo Lawal - Central Oklahoma Jody Stritmatter - Johnstown Tim Morrissey - Western Colorado Donnell Rawls - Winston-Salem3 points

I never wanted to do this but it's been long enough to share this with the wrestling community. The true story of why Kolat left PSU is because living under the shadow of legendary greatest of all time Chertow was too much to bare3 points

Floyd "Shorty" Hitchcock excelled as a wrestler during his days at Bloomsburg University. He posted an 84-7-2 dual meet record and won 3 PSAC Championships. His senior year he won both the Division I and II National titles in the 177-pound weight class and was named the Outstanding Wrestler in both tournaments. He also won a silver medal at the 1973 World Games in Moscow. During his high school coaching days at Lake Lehman, he guided the Knights to 4 District 2 Titles and was a 4-time district coach of the year. In 1981, he coached Lake-Lehman to the PIAA Class AA State Championship. Two of his former high school stars were Rick and Rock Bonomo, who later achieved All-American honors at Bloomsburg.2 points

This one has been intriguing for me all year. He wasn't just a D3 wrestler, he was a D3 stud (1, 4, 2). He has been a solid member of the lineup all year, ranked in the mid-high teens the last half of the season. This gives a good look at how D3 compares to D1.2 points

Not only that, his record vs BigTen opponents isn't very good at NCAAs. He was the 4th seed last year and couldn't get past 29 seed Caleb Fish. The year before he had Hamiti down 10-5 until Hamiti reeled off 10 straight points in winning 15-11. He also lost to Kharchla at that NCAA tournament when he started shooting for stalemates and could not hold a 3rd period lead. Fish made Mesenbrink work this year but still lost to him by major, and I think if Ramirez is there vs Mesenbrink in the semi finals it looks like Hamiti vs Ramirez from two years ago. Maybe I am wrong, but that is my take on it.2 points

Pain. But an all-time upset that deserves to be posted. Imar had already beaten Nolf twice and was 2 for 2 on the path to becoming a 4 timer that was an absolute wrecking machine until he met the inside trip from hell. Joseph had ice in his veins and deserves his flowers.2 points

You need a 5 gallon tank to wrestle Griffith and Ruth. You need a 20 gallon tank and a reserve tank to wrestle Messinbrink2 points

The cartoon was almost better than the match. I don't believe it's on the internet anymore. The video of Dake in the tunnel after the match was pretty good, too. Pretty sure he called Molinaro an idiot about 20s into the post-match video: https://www.flowrestling.org/people/5938692-kyle-dake/video?playing=52720082 points

Just like Rivera and DeSantos, Fix is good but not good enough. Unless he wins it all this year(which I do not see happening) he’ll be one of the best 7 year 2nd best D1 wrestlers of all time.2 points

How many different wrestlers at 125 lbs were ranked #1 this year? More than 30, maybe? What are the odds one of these #1 guys wins it all? Is there a 125 lb wrestler who was not #1 who is an actual threat?1 point

I was referring to Griffith and Ruth. Having success against very good wrestlers that wrestle at a very controlled pace is much different than wrestling a very good wrestler with a high energy fast pace. I did not say anything about Ramirez. Should be some really exciting matches. Can't wait.1 point

Coach in high school used to quote this moment any time someone would make a brash decision that contradicted what he was telling us to do in a match. I will never forgive Molinaro for this choice.1 point

I'd like to preface this by saying I think MM is going to win, but Julian is very hard to score on despite letting it fly most of the time. He was beating Keegan going into the third and other than that the most points he's given up this year is 5. I do not expect this to happen but the only way I can see Mitchell losing is that he shoots himself out of the match to where Julian can get a 2-3 takedown lead and some riding time or potentially a takedown and backs and then just pump the breaks enough in the third to weather the storm or get in some long scrambles.1 point

While Caliendo and Amine might be physically stronger, Ramirez might be the most powerful 165lber in the nation with a considerably large gas tank. I have a feeling you haven't actually seen him wrestle this year.1 point
-
No they don’t. I know you don’t like math/statistics, but the probability of that happening based on the current seeds is extremely low, I’m guessing less than 1%. But I’m learning, “all about the matchups”, isn’t it.1 point

In South Florida IWB is simply known as "The Stand-up." No one is really sure if it its for his favorite wrestling move or his attempt to earn some extra weekend cash.1 point

Remember the "I choose down" moment by Molinaro in the finals against Dake? Molinaro got taken down and ridden like a donkey by Dake in the first period then chose down to start the 2nd period1 point

Great thread! Thanks Strange! Enjoyed them all so far with the exception of the Metcalf loss. Hat's off to Caldwell but I lost the pool to my brother over that match.1 point

Carr has had success against long wrestlers, his technique is rock solid just that KOT was slightly better the last two times.1 point
-
Yep. Hamiti had it in the bag until about 90 seconds to go, and then he absolutely imploded. I don’t think Ramirez or Carr have ever felt anything like that. They also don’t have anywhere near the length to counter Mesenbrink that Hamiti does. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk1 point

Two points. Not all who root for a team have the same mindset. Plenty of humble PSU wrestle fans wary of a tough loss. So far this year, the team has met the standard of great without a lot of flat/bad (team and each wrestler) days. But this tourney is so tough that PSU might falter from the seeds/expectations. Would be a big surprise to have them finish below 1st as a team, but as Spencer Lee teaches us, even the most vetted NCAA competitor can get knocked off. These risks make it fun for fans! As tough as Brooks looks at 197, the #2 seed has been off the charts this year as well. Brooks is human and that match could be one of the best ever.1 point

Yes. Also the same Ramirez who ducked Carr. He may score a few, but will not be able to keep up with MM for seven minutes. He will wilt. Wilt. Wrestling MM is just a bit more taxing on the lungs than those guys.1 point
