  2. Yes to Hamlin. I tried to get McGonagle called the New Hampster- but that didn't go over too well. Kilrain was from Braintree, Mass- Braintree Catholic before prepping a year at Blair.

  4. No Jimmy usually pretends to be pro-Iowa but with some sort of backhanded compliment thrown in. Something like, “if Iowa State can’t beat Iowa with half their lineup suspended, should Dresser be fired?”

  5. Wow, some rose-colored glasses for the Goldman era! Indiana was the doormat of the B1G for many years under Goldman.

  6. Was Hamlin the one they called Vermonster? Going way back, I think Lehigh great Colin Kilrain was a New England guy too. As for the higher goals, hear you but think it also applies in many states. I’m good friends with a guy who coaches for a top club program in Virginia. He told me not too long ago that’s a problem here, most kids set the goal of being state champs but aren’t working to be national caliber/D1 types.

  7. I’ll be quite happy if they finish close to this. Very young team, we saw how they performed against VT, now let’s see how they perform against quality wrestlers in a tournament format. Most intrigued to see where Geog finishes.

  8. ESPN and the UFC going in on college wrestling is a huge opportunity. I hope that the NCAA realizes this and is open to reforms that will make the sport better for fans. The three-point takedown is a great experiment. Hopefully kids will compete in big televised matches this year rather than duck.

  10. Watching the replay I'm sure others observed the same that Penn St is peaking way too early. Its a very long season, they will be trashed by March and won't stand a chance. Who here has the courage to tell Wkn & Jimmy?

  13. If you give up your drug dealer you get probation for the time of your drug dealer's sentence. If you do not give up your drug dealer then you do the sentence of your drug dealer. Drug dealer sentences should be SIGNIFICANT. Example: if you sell drugs (a felony) to someone who ODs then you should be subject to homicide charges. Just like if you are committing armed robbery and "accidentally" kill someone you are subject to murder charges. Strolling through the capitol and taking selfies - no incarceration. Trespassing fine of $100 or so is sufficient.

  14. I would like to see an improvement in recruiting with the Indiana program but that’s hard to do until the staff can prove they can developed multiple guts into NCAA qualifier that are getting a shot to AA. Recruit want to know they have guys in the room who can get them to that same level and coaches that have a track record for getting the none blue chips guys to another level. Once the in room guys can get there we will see how good Escobedo and companies recruiting skill really are. To me there a few more years on Escobedo’s progress clock before you can really start questioning if he’s getting enough out of the room and able to pull in solid recruits. Sure asking for IU to be a Top 10 national program anytime soon is a stretch, but the expectation should at least be consistently be in the middle of the Big10 with a a few AAs each year shouldn’t be.

  16. Sunday afternoon, one of the most anticipated duals of the year takes place as Iowa will travel to Ames to take on Iowa State. Yesterday, we released our preview and predictions for the action that takes place. With Iowa slightly down and Iowa State looking very solid, this dual represents the Cyclones best chance to earn a victory in almost 20 years. The last time that Iowa State was able to defeat their in-state rival was December 5th, 2004, when they prevailed 19-16 in Iowa’s fabled Carver-Hawkeye Arena. It’s been a long time since December 5th, 2004. Just how long? Below, we have some fun facts about how different the collegiate wrestling landscape was the last time Iowa State defeated the Hawkeyes. - Head Coaches at the time were Bobby Douglas (Iowa State) and Jim Zalesky (Iowa) - Stars for Iowa State in the dual win include Grant Nakamura (125 lbs) who won by fall, Nate Gallick (141 lbs) who beat Alex Tsirtsis in tiebreakers, Trent Paulson (165) who won a shootout over Joe Johnston, Nick Passolano (174 lbs) who also won a wild one over Luke Lofthouse, and Trevor Smith (197 lbs) who won via major decision. - The December 2004 win for Iowa State is their only victory in Carver-Hawkeye Arena which was built in 1983. - A few weeks after the dual, Iowa finished in second place at the Midlands, Iowa State was third and Illinois took the title with 130.5 points. - A couple months after this dual, Iowa lost to Northwestern for the first time since 1968. That dual saw Adam Fellers get the start for Iowa at 197 lbs. - Iowa would go on to outplace Iowa State at the 2005 NCAA Championships. Iowa was seventh with 66 points (0 champs/4 All-Americans), while Iowa State was tenth with 57 points (0 champs/3 All-Americans). - Earlier in 2004, Oklahoma State won the second of their four straight national titles. They outdistanced second-place Iowa by 41.5 points. - Tom Brands was in his first year as head coach at Virginia Tech. Iowa and Virginia Tech met in a dual and the Hawkeyes won with a 38-0 shutout. It was one of only four losses on the year for Brands at Virginia Tech. - One of Brands’ assistant coaches at Virginia Tech was Doug Schwab. - Kevin Dresser just coached Christiansburg High School to its third consecutive Virginia AA state championship - Terry Brands was in the midst of his third and final season as Head Coach at Chattanooga. Later that season, he’d have two All-Americans Michael Keefe and Jon Sioredas (current Cal Poly head coach). - Iowa assistant coach Ryan Morningstar and Iowa State assistant coach Brent Metcalf just started their senior year of high school wrestling. - A few months before this dual, Iowa State assistant coach Cael Sanderson won an Olympic gold medal in Athens, Greece. Cael’s men’s freestyle Olympic teammates were Stephan Abas, Eric Guerrero, Jamill Kelly, Joe Williams, Daniel Cormier, and Kerry McCoy. - Speaking of Cael; Only he and Pat Smith had won four DI national titles at this time. Three others (Dake/2013, Stieber/2015, and Diakomihalis/2023) have followed. Diakomihalis was five at the time of Iowa State’s last victory. - Iowa State national runner-up Cody Sanderson was the head coach at Utah Valley, which was known as Utah Valley State. - At this time, Iowa State was in the midst of inking the top recruiting class for 2005. That included #4 Cyler Sanderson, #5 Mitch Mueller, #10 Jake Varner, #13 Nick Gallick, David Zabriskie, and Nick Fanthorpe. - The top recruit from the class that just hit campus was Illinois’ Mike Poeta, while Dustin Schlatter (OH/Minnesota) would hold that title for 2005. - Penn State had finished 12th at the 2004 tournament (46.5 points - 0 champs/2 AA’s) and did not crack the top 20 in 2005. - The most recent Hodge Trophy winner was Montana State-Northern’s Emmett Wilson. - The 2004 national tournament featured wrestlers from Boise State, Boston, Cal-State Fullerton, Duquesne, Eastern Illinois, Eastern Michigan, Fresno State, Oregon, Slippery Rock, UC Davis, and UNC Greensboro. All these teams have since dropped wrestling. Fresno State has dropped wrestling twice during this span. Additionally, Millersville had four wrestlers at the 2004 tournament. They have since made the decision to compete at the DII level. - At this time American, Kent State, Missouri, South Dakota State, and UC Davis had not crowned a DI national champion. - The only current DI head coaches that have been with their current school since this time are: Jim Andrassy (Kent State), Tom Borrelli (Central Michigan), Joel Greenlee (Ohio), Mark Manning (Nebraska), Brian Smith (Missouri), John Smith (Oklahoma State), and Jay Weiss (Harvard). - Currently, there are seven DI wrestling conferences. For the 2004 NCAA Tournament, there were 11. Ones that no longer exist include the CAA, East Region, EWL, and the West Region.

  19. I lost all sorts of matches in many different ways, so to imply that people who want to see the rules evolve are bitter losers is silly. I just feel TDs are harder to get and should be rewarded more. 1 TD should be worth more than 2 escapes, IMO.

  20. I live in NH now, but don't really follow HS wrestling at all. From what I've seen the best of New England usually go to a smaller PA state school or sometimes Lehigh, where they often struggle to make the starting lineup. Occasionally they get to be AA contenders like McGonagle or actual AAs like Jack or Robert Hamlin. I feel that decline of D1 wrestling in New England has held the region back. Also to some extent, I feel aving the New England championships limits the aspirations of the best guys .. They ultimate goals most New England wrestlers is to win New England instead of the higher goals kids from other states have

  21. You seem to be confident in your way of thinking. That's OK. Mine very much differ from yours. That's OK, too. You believe your way and I'll believe mine. And... listen carefully... THAT is exactly the most fundamental concept of what it means to be American.

  25. Payam Zarrinpour finished 7th in 2007 at 285 to become Sacred Hearts' first, and so far, only AA. Unseeded he upset 10 seed Cody Parker (Cal Poly-SLO) in the first round 12-3. Next he took out 7 seed Matt Fields of Iowa before succumbing in the quarterfinals to Penn State's 2 seed and eventual runner-up, Aaron Anspach. In the blood round he knocked off Iowa State's Dave Zabriskie 9-6. After Zarrinpour lost 7-4 to Wade Sauer of Cal State-Fullerton he finished his run with an 11-8 victory over Bloomsburg's Mike Spaid.

  29. I have thick enough skin to shrug off the punches and share my views. Abortion, environment, voting, and LGBTQ rights were covered in the first response. It is of little value to weigh in on abstract concepts, and I’ll say please again… what are OP views? Voting rights act of 1964 100% support. Separately on voting, I haven’t thought deeply through nuance considerations around age, civics knowledge, societal contributions, etc. I am pro citizen proof. As the father of teenagers, I question youthful maturity. Should the citizen have a developed brain of a 25 year old to vote? As a responsibility/contributor guy, should the non retired citizen have held a job for some period in the previous year? Should the voter have passed the same civic test the legal immigrants citizens do? I want to make it as easy as possible for qualified citizens to vote. Multiple voting days. Voting holiday should be the biggest celebration of all holidays. Environmental protection Super necessary, depending. Incarceration of low level non violent offenses Lengthy incarceration for low level offenses can make a bad situation worse. Often a bad use of my tax dollars. Example situation. There is no need to incarcerate someone for doing drugs that only impact themself. When the crime impacts others, incarceration may be necessary. What nuanced situations are you thinking about? Policing in the US Needs to be much more heavy handed and funded in the worst blocks of the most violent neighborhoods. Broken windows policy… ——- My views originate with the golden rule. I don’t need to infringe on you/others unless you/others are infringing on the rights of me/others. The government and others should treat me the same way.

  31. Ah, but do you grasp the essence of my statements regarding J6? There is a difference between expressing a nuanced viewpoint and actively sympathizing with or endorsing criminal behavior. The differentiation is important, and the meaning is large. Concerning conspiracy, I hope we can all acknowledge that people sometimes conceal the truth. Who do you instinctively mistrust due to their secrets? Why do you mistrust them? What if this person was in power? Or perhaps they already have power? Many people (not just Democrats) suspected irregularities in the 2000 and 2016 presidential elections. I confess. I believe there are irregularities in the 2020 election data, and my suspicions heightened due to the perceived lack of transparency.

  33. Yes. All of those climate folks should turn off their air conditioner's, turn off their gas heaters or heat p, pumps, they should get rid of their cars and ride bikes or walk. Instead of flying either walk or row a boat. The ones with multiple houses need demolish them and live in one small 1200 sq ft house. Any product that requires petroleum to make or build , which is just about everything must be discarded immediately.
