  1. It's closer to the international style because of the 1 pt escape. So the net value of a takedown is 2 points, assuming you can't ride. the 2-1 ratio of takedown to escape was always stupid and overvalued the ability to score near the end of a period.

  4. Two stories from my junior year of HS: The 2 biggest weights then were 215 and 250. Our previous year 250 pounder was an incredible athlete. In fact he went to PSU for football and after was the first pick in the second round of the NFL draft. A new kid went out for wrestling who was about 5' 7" and 245 lbs and had great balance. Anyway, the new kid beat out the incumbent in wrestleoffs, so our previous 250 sucked about 10-15 lbs to make 215. He was kind of a strange bird anyway but he started showing up in the locker room with this little buddha statue that he prayed to. Before every match he prayed to this thing. Whether it was a lower weight or the buddha, I don't know, but he started the year like 10-0. Then we had a match against Ithaca HS and he got stuck by some short, fat kid. After the match, he went in the locker room, threw the buddha against the wall and smashed it. Our 127 pounder, who wasn't afraid of anybody or anything, hollered across the locker room that the Penn State football coach called and wanted him to quit wrestling because he didn't want the little fat kid from Ithaca to hurt him. It wasn't easy keeping them apart. He did quit wrestling. Amazing to me, he never did much in the NFL because he was "too small" for LB. We had home and away matches with a smaller school about 100 miles away in Upstate NY. I'm not sure what time we left for the away match, but it was snowing and it wasn't our usual bus driver. I don't think the driver took us over any hardtop roads the whole way there and I think it was about 8pm when we finally got there. The gym was tiny but they had a good team and the place was rockin'. After I wrestled, I got talking with this cute cheerleader who was only about 5 feet from the end chair I was on. After the match, I ran into her again in the lobby and we talked. After a few minutes, I thought I should get heading for the bus. I walked outside just in time to see the bus taking off. I started sprinting in the snow and banged on the bus. It stopped, I got on, and our coach gave me a real dirty look. Hey, a feller's gotta have priorities. If I'd walked out of that school 30 seconds later, I may still be there.

  5. Did Ramirez have the chance to enter the Open? If he did - did he enter? If he entered, did he compete? If he competed, did he outplace O'Toole? If he didn't, was it because he lost to O'Toole? Did he lose to someone O'Toole beat? Did he lose to someone that lost to someone that O'Toole beat? Did he lose to someone that lost to someone that lost to someone that O'Toole beat? Did he lose to someone that lost to someone that lost to someone that lost to someone that O'Toole beat? Hint: It's the last one there. He lost to Derek Gilcher 10-0 in the Consi of 8 #2 who beat Tommy Gantt in the Consi Quaters 9-4 who lost to Jake Shields 6-4 in the Consi Semis who lost to Kegan O'Toole (the same one who earned the spot) 10-2 for 3rd place at the US Open. If Ramirez wanted the spot he should have outperformed O'Toole in the qualifying tournament that holds seniority.

  6. Not a bad lineup.... LR putting together a good roster for a newer program. IMO getting Dutton and Bailey were huge for their program. They are becoming a model for starting a program and building from scratch. I hope to see them get an AA soon... the first NC to come from that program will be royalty.

  8. I dont think it is any secret that black athletes, especially those expelled from Foxcatcher, were pretty hurt/angry so many stayed on after that round of Dupont sickness. Add to that anyone who continued after Dave's murder... It is pretty hard for anyone to stomach.

  15. I haven't seen any or heard any rumblings about Plott redshirting besides forum posters saying "Should he? Could he? Would he?" And the dude just won U23s. What would he do with his redshirt year? I for one am excited about next year's lineup. Bunch of new dudes on the mat and as coaches. It's been a weird couple years as a Pokes fan with the whole Ferrari vs Mastro feud and subsequent lineup shifts.

  16. This whole thing speaks to a larger issue with wrestling in general… Much of our community wants it both ways They want the recognition, support, and resources of the big sports… But refuse, don’t want to, or whine about being expected to do the things that those big sports do. I’m willing to bet money that this sort of thing doesn’t happen or get fixed real quick in basketball/football stuff and jobs might be on the line. If we want to be treated like we belong up there we need to act like it

  17. I believe that many of our posters are actually incorrectly spelling the term "greyshirt," especially when dealing with Cornell wrestling.

  19. predicting what John W. does is a fool's errand. i have speculated on it several times but he keeps everyone on their toes. i promise you, his own staff doesn't even know what he's going to do next. there's even a credible possibility that he will resign later this fall.

  31. From a Feb 2014 ESPN article about grayshirting: “Nobody really remembers when it first began. Some coaches say it's been around forever, while others say it started to catch on only over the past 10 years. ” Giving credit to the term “gray shirt” to Mike Grey and changing the spelling would have been a great story.

  36. I'll believe it when I see it. I'm sure it's been discussed and will continue to be discussed as we get closer to the season. Wittlake's status is is still a bit unknown (has another year, but is working through health issues, may or may not want to return), which seems to be the main reason for Plott potentially taking a redshirt.

  38. My understanding for conference placements is that for at-large selection, wrestlers are either one-spot away or not, and the only other time the 15% comes into play is between conference foes. For seeding, conference champions are above everybody else, and otherwise, they are only compared, again, between conference foes. Am curious as to how concussions or skin check failures would affect the minimum matches at conference tournaments. As far as the two-second injury default, that's still in-play, but the wrestler will now need to do it twice, and take both losses. The bumping of the allocation criteria wouldn't really affect the balance between larger conferences and smaller conferences that badly, but what it would do is bring A LOT more of those bids to the at-large pool instead of being pre-allocated.
