It appears Austin Gomez has won the 65 KG spot. Curious if Anthony Valencia also won the spot? Additionally I wish Zahid Valencia and Cael Valencia would also wrestle for Mexico. Mexico, Puerto Rico... just need a few others to have our own little Eastern Bloc.3 points

What a strong ending to his career (I think he’s done) from 10 seed to 3rd in a tough 125. Last 3 years 2nd, 6th, 3rd. Not so long ago is seemed that many were calling for Figueroa to take his spot. Glad ASU stuck with him, he earned their loyalty. Figs is good but no way he would have done better than Courtney did at NCAAs this year.3 points

I don’t think it matters what kind of surgery he had , he AAed coming back from major shoulder surgery, with stress fractures in both his big toes , a torn acl in one knee , torn meniscus in the other knee , surgery 2 weeks before big 12s and a 28 seed ..Cardinale is one tough sob3 points

Luck ran out. He was gifted two matches (DePrez and Aiello) at NCAA’s last year.3 points

I can't believe people have to "rag" on Spencer Lee, here, or anywhere....most people will never know the greatness Spencer has reached....not even close! Not a Hawkeye fan, but I do respect Spencer. He's someone anyone would want to represent their program. U have the feeling his knees are so bad that he will never compete again. Fadz3 points

What does the label (?) "BRAINS" mean on your profile page? This label has bever been attached to me my entire life, so it must have some esoteric meaning. So, I started looking, and every (?) profile has a "BRAINS" label. Have we unwittingly signed-up for some zombie meals-on-wheels program?2 points

https://wvusports.com/news/2023/3/24/blog-cardinales-toughness-and-persistence-leads-to-another-all-america-season.aspx Not only did he AA as the 28 seed, coming off major shoulder injury from last season he started the season finding out he had stress fractures in both big toes . After some time off he returned around midlands and immediately tore his acl, after sitting out a few weeks he came back to practice and immediately had a complete bucket handle meniscus tear , he had the meniscus repair surgery just 2 weeks before big 12s and 27 days before the start of nationals . He wrestled all matches at ncaas including the meaningless 7th/8th match…guy is an absolute warrior and he did all this while in medical school this guy should be the one selling excuses are for wussies gear2 points

ASU could get Nevills or the heavyweight from Harvard. It is pretty easy to get into grad school at ASU. Even easier to get admitted as an undergrad. There wouldn't be a huge drop off if they picked somebody like that up while Schultz goes for the Olympics. But we will see how things shake out in Vegas.2 points

The problem with "common sense" is that it too often falls to the lowest level; poor judgement, after all, is pretty common. I'll go with an educated assessment every time, thank you.2 points

Earlier in Max's career at Cornell... he lost in the finals to LEHIGH's Ryan Preisch by fall. (Yeah, I know Dean wound up AA'ing @ the NCAA's while Preisch missed the podium that season /2018.) If you have a Flo subscription check out his match for the '18 EIWA finals... it's not for the feint of heart. https://www.flowrestling.org/events/6056313-eiwa-championships-2018-ncaa-wrestling/videos?playing=6131398 D32 points

Ok, then YOU put a word to it? Two matches on the Championship side in which he SHOULD have lost but was given a TD on review that shouldn't have been called a TD and then not having NF called against you when you very clearly gave up 2 NF? Pick your non-clownish word...2 points
-
Nope. I think Max Dean is an excellent wrestler and a couple hammer on top. He is very talented and has won a ton of high level matches. At NCAA’s last year he was gifted calls in both those matches.2 points

Jordan Burroughs his senior year was probably the best college wrestler I have seen.2 points

If this is true confusion, have you heard of a website called Google? Depending on your skills in forming a question in the search bar there, you could find an answer.2 points

Eh, I feel like John Smith was overrated. (I mean, if we're gonna make a threat in honor of our favorite Cinnamon themed pasty, we have to keep some of the same nonsense, no?)2 points

No, no, no. More conspiracy theories need not apply. We're getting to the end of that mess - that sleeping dog is just fine.2 points

You are right. But, just like Ed Banach - all the buildup and hype are too much to ignore when the final result on the mat is a loss like they took.2 points

Spencer Lee called him "nobody" or "some guy" the first year he All Americaned. He then implied Cardinale was below him enough that he won't mention his name. His karma was standing right next to Cardinale on the all american podium- dethroned. It reminded me how Byrd told Cannon "you're nobody" after big 10s 2 years ago, and then Byrd-Cannon finishing 5-7 back to back years on the podium. They've seemingly mended their relationship now that an influx of 133 talent left them both off the podium this year, and it appears Byrd will never lose to Cannon.1 point

Yep. It would be clownish if I said that Max Dean was a terrible wrestler - which I did not say and do not think. He’s a great wrestler that happened to benefit greatly from two calls in two separate matches that went his way. I’m not asking him to return his medal, just think that is relevant information to assess his “underperformance” this year.1 point

I’m sure Truax’s goal is to win a national title. His best chance of doing that is to go whatever weight Brooks is not going. I have no idea which one that would be, but if he went to PSU, he would figure it out a lot quicker and get ready for that weight. That said I hope he doesn’t go there… the rich don’t need to get any richer lol1 point

Guy. You have trouble reading or something? Truax is well under the 197lb limit without even cutting. Day 2 he weighed in at 188lbs, 10lbs under the 197+1 limit. I personally talked to some of the Cal Poly squad at our hotel that morning and they said he was under 190 with warmups on. His 18-3 record this season was his best, yes, but he also missed a very large stretch of it where he would have had competitive matches. I would have put money on him having more wins and the same losses either way, though. The same can be said for each season too, fwiw. Also, also, his first year midway through the season he went to 157, so it isn't like he ballooned from 149 to 165 in one offseason. He was already having to cut to get to 157 by the end of that season. Also, also, also, his tweet says he will be looking in to a number of graduate schools for his last year of eligibility. No mention of staying at Cal Poly for it.1 point

Your post might make sense if Truax was a full-feed 197. Reality is he was only three pounds over 184+1 on day two if this year’s tourney. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk1 point

What in the hell is that ref looking at/for back there? This feels like a "write the caption," candidate. Preisch looks like he's watching another match. Dean looks like he's asking, "how flat would you like me ref?" While the ref is getting kicked in the chest and trying to figure out what that stain is on the back of Preisch singlet. Did he sit in something or...should we add an H to that?1 point

I'd take my sister against any of them. She was a gymnast...and mean. I remember I did...something and she came flying on from the top ropes(or so it seemed) and I just kept getting these rabbit punches only stopping to dig her nails in with her other hand and start swinging with the now free hand. It took both parents to peel that little banshee off me...and just like the real world, I got yelled at(I don't actually remember that part, but it was 25 years ago and it feels true).1 point

It was pretty clear. "While in a Cornell singlet." Gabe only wrestled in a Cornell singlet. And I'm fine with it as well. Why be in a hurry to start your professional life if you are still capable of competing? Particularly if you're not likely to compete at the next level? I'll bet Gable Stevenson will regret not using his last year at some point. Chael said one thing that was absolutely correct. Every Wrestler looks back on their career and they have regrets. If you win 3 NCs, if you finish in the Rd of 12 4 times(by the way, there was Murin and one other Wrestler who had 3 Rd of 12 finishes coming into the year, I can't remember the other one). So what's it really matter? You start at 23 or 24? You can still get married and have kids or you can still live near campus with your friends and do whatever you want. Real life sucks compared to College! Hanging out, practice, 4-5 hours of class a day, at that point, most of them are taking easier classes. Then you get your own workout in and you hang out with your buddies playing video games or...with the fairer sex(really, the whole point of College...all the rest is a distant 2nd!)1 point

Fleeger was a great talent, but didn't seem to have the conditioning to win the big ones.1 point

On finger ties - stalling, sure. What about broken fingers? I’ve seen many a wrestler shaking their hands, massaging their fingers, seemingly in pain. And a few times holding a dislocated / broken finger up.1 point

Joseph, Hall...potential 1/1/2/1 and a 1/2/2/1. Both had the chance to jump tiers if not for the cancellation. As for the argument that Lee would have won if 2020 was wrestled...everyone thought he'd win THIS year, he didn't. Sucks for him.1 point

Your recency bias is hilarious. Spencer Lee career record is 98-6. Who are you putting him ahead of on that list? Who from PSU would you put behind him? Ed Ruth went 136-3 with 105 bonus point wins in his career? Zain Retherford that went 128-4 and had a bonus rate around 85% his last 3 years? Jason Nolf who went 118-3 and averaged 80+% bonus? How about Bo Nickal who went 120-3 who averaged over 80% bonus his last 3 years? He's literally behind all of the PSU guys. Brooks and Starocci are going to win their 4th next year so he'll definitely be behind them.. Who else are you putting above him from my list? He's got almost double the losses of everybody else and nowhere near the wins. Do you think Snyder? A guy who won an Olympic gold and weighed 230lbs wrestling heavyweight beating Adam Coon? No way. No way he had a better career than Greg Jones. Joe Williams? Nope. Maybe you have an argument with Dieringer but that's it. Also, how many times did these guys get pinned?1 point
-
There's too much recency bias with Lee to rank him appropriately versus the field. I think we can all agree his the best all time 125 pounder. On the 3X timer list I'd imagine he'd come in somewhere around 12th.1 point

Whenever I was pinned, I accepted it as a failure. I knew I could get better. And sure enough, I developed a world class bridge. It was my best move. My go to move. It was feared.1 point

Didn't mention him earlier because it seemed obvious, but Frank Chamizo. Obviously he represents Italy internationally, but I believe he resides in NYC.1 point
