When an established super stud like Lee, who’s obviously in grad school AND recovering from surgery can fit in workouts, the sensible thing to do is accommodate his schedule and maximize his recovery. There are any number of reasons why he might not be practicing with the team at the moment. Regardless, any idiot who thinks Lee isn’t a team player has been asleep the last 4 years. 125 - Dean Peterson may have secured the spot over Rutgers teammate Dylan Shawver; same for unseeded Diego Sotelo of Harvard who was unseeded and took 3rd after a first round loss to Jack Medley. Sotelo beat teammate Beau Bayless in the consis 10-0 and won 5 matches before a MFF in the match for 3rd over Peterson. 133 - 4th Seed Michael Colaiocco of Penn won the title with an 8-1 win over Taylor Lamont in the quarters, a 15-13 win over #1 seed Lucas Byrd in the semis and a 3-2 win in the final over Chris Cannon that included a riding time point. Ryan Crookham had a big 2-1 decision in the quarters over #2 seed Joe Hellman of Rutgers. 141 - unseeded Saul Ervin of SIU Edwardsville took 5th and got to the semis with wins over Joe Zargo (WBF 1:54) and 4th seed Jesse Vasquez of ASU. 149 - unseeded Caleb Tyus of SIU Edwardsville also made it to the semis with wins over Graham Rooks (4th seed) and 5th seed Sam Hillegas. He took 4th to Doug Zapf (2-6) but beat Tyler Badget of Pitt in the consis semis 7-5. Badgett also had a good tourney. 157 - unseeded Drew Scharenbro of WIsconsin won 2nd. 165 - not a lot of surprise. Lucas Revano of Penn won four matches in the consis and got 7th from the 14th seed 174 - Unseeded Daniel Wask (Unattached Navy Prep) beat #2 seed Troy Fisher in the quarters and fell 2-3 to Nick Contrera in the semis, then won 4th after a win the consi semis over Pitt's Luca Augustine. Wask is going to do some big things in NCAA wrestling after his PG year. 184 - Jaritt Shonhoster (UW Whitewater) was the 5th seed and won 2nd, with a fall over the top seed Brian Soldano in the semis. 197 - Andrew Davison Northwestern lost to Cole Urbas 2-3 in his second match on the front side and then won 3rd place with 6 wins in the consis - beast! 285 - Pitt's unseeded Dayton Pitzer took 2nd and won several big matches, including 4-0 over #1 seed Colton Schultz (ASU) in the quarters and a pin (5:57) over 4th seed Trent Hilger in the semis. Plenty of other big wins, but these are some I noticed!4 points

I was actually thinking of Messenbrink for some redonk reason. The four gallons of Captain Morgan Black this morning might have had an effect. I thought the fourteen potatoes, eight ears of corn and three kegger porterhouse might offset the alcohol content. Obviously i was wrong.3 points

You guys have been addressing the big tech election impact in another thread. I'm more concerned with foreign government interference, much of which happens on social media, and requires some sort of censorship of misinformation on those platforms. As I said, fraud has occurred in every US election ever. I don't believe fraud at a level that would impact the results of the election has happened any time in the recent past. With no evidence of such, claiming it is a possibility is just being a sore loser (didn't expect any better out of Trump). It's much more likely that folks didn't want four more years of Trump than there was a nationwide conspiracy to commit election fraud at a level that would cause him to lose so badly without any (legitimate) evidence left behind.3 points

That he doesn’t wrestle with the team because he is recovering from surgery. He rehabs in the room, he conditions with the team, he is not live wrestling during Iowa practices at this point. Which is what has been happening, regardless of how you want to interpret Angie Ayalas post.3 points

I'm thinking this guy deserves his own thread. True freshman, takes out Cohlton Schultz 4-0, pinned Trent Hilger in the semis, now has Davison in the finals. Can he take out 3 top 10 HWTs? I'm curious how the Hilger match went (it was a late pin). Especially surprising since Pitzer wrestled 215 in high school last year, and Schultz/Hilger are BIG boys. I assume Pitt was planning to redshirt him, but Gavin may need to rethink that. As an aside, check out Pitzer's impressive collection of first period pins last year: PA-Wrestling.com : Mount Pleasant Vikings Wrestling : Dayton Pitzer. 45-0, with only 4 guys making it past the first period (and only 2 past the 2:40 mark).2 points

Coach Smith said they’re fighting sickness and/or nagging injuries. Apparently only returning AA’s are susceptible to such ailments. Someone call Dr Fauci out of retirement, this phenomenon can probably be prevented with proper masking.2 points

Lee should go to a club where they care about his health. Sanderson and staff care about more than wrestling, so NLWC would be a good choice.2 points

Meh. He also only won 15-5 against a true freshman with losses to Tristan Lujan, Jarrett Trombley, Trevor Mastrogiovanni and Liam Cronin.2 points

And, it's often forgotten that Gymmy J was one person "of interest" in the entire investigation, so having him serve as an investigator of hisself may have been a bit of a "conflict of interest, " as those in the legal fields say.2 points

Assad and Berge should have never went to ot, ref gifted AA a stalling point. Upon further review, I can see why no coach should want to send their starters to a tournament hosted by the hocks.2 points

4 of the Top 10 ranked dual teams + #14 and #15 I'm not entirely sure what you're getting at. Would you rather not have the event (which is undoubtedly the best dual competition of the year) exist?2 points

Spencer obviously was annoyed. I get his perspective, not wanting to put unnecessary miles on the injured knee against a teammate.. I get Drake's perspective of wanting to wrestle. Seems to me this probably should have been a Brands decision, but in the end its much ado about nothing, IMO. It's an aggressive sport.2 points

Dual meets need to mean something first. Then we'll see the manipulation of that oddly random scoring metric after it gets gamed or we get one bad call leading to a 16-15 win on criteria before people go back go clamoring "you want a title decided like that?" I also see zero issues with a team winning 4 matches and winning a dual - we have that possibility right now. Only time people complain is when it happens against their team. The harder part is finding a split where a team wins 3 bouts but wins the dual. That's what can't happen now. I'd love to see how many instances this has actually happened. Also, you can't really retroactively apply 'would have won' scenarios because people would completely wrestle differently if they were trying to win the dual knowing they were behind. Applying point systems to what-if scenarios really aren't logical, because it assumes everything would stay the same, when it wouldn't. Keep wrestling til the very end instead of shutting it down when you know you can't get the MD or TF. Is there a problem? Depends on who you ask. Should it be fixed. Depends on who you ask. I think the bigger problem with scoring in wrestling is how few people can actually score our national tournament by hand. Oh, you can score your team by hand, but the type of scoring in tournaments changes based on how big the bracket is, how many you place, etc. A team from the Pac-12 wrestles a completely different scoring format than they do at the NCAA championships because places and rounds are drastically different in size. We have too many nuance rules in wrestling and it makes the acceptability outside of our own people that much more difficult. It's not the casual fan, it's the freaking advertising companies who COULD be convinced to put the sport on the air with more sponsorship. Why do we see cornhole on TV? It's easy to explain. Throw the bag in the hole. It's a bar/outdoor game. Having simple rules for non-wrestling people to understand is pretty easy to understand. Took my kids to a hockey game today. Goal. 1. Simple. Yes, team sports are different, but we adapt or we die. If we try to adapt after we're already in the casket, it's too late.2 points

Require a minimum number of matches to qualify for the post season and another minimum number to be seeded at nationals. I don't know the exact numbers to suggest, maybe a minimum of 10 to qualify and 20 to be seeded. I don't want the threshold so low that it eliminates legitimate injuries, but maybe those athletes forfeit their seed.2 points

Wonder if the ‘grind’ would fell less crappy if we just went to mat side weigh-ins. Take the crappiest part of wrestling - the hard weight cuts - out of the picture. I’m no doctor but it might also help prevent injuries - less stress on body. Sorry - don’t mean to derail. But thought it was related.2 points

Yeah, sort of reminds me of the pattern we are seeing out of Okie State at the international level1 point

No, I am. But I’m not blind to Lee’s obvious loyalty and commitment to Iowa, regardless of allegations from a passionate parent.1 point

I think this scenario makes sense. But if Lee didn't want to wrestle Ayala, he could have forfeited himself. If Ayala didn't want to be told to forfiet, I respect that. Given his injury history and ongoing recovery, I not surprised he would do much if any live wrestling in the room. Probably spends most of his time in PT and doing low impact cardio. Parents should stay off social media. They and never going to make anything better that way.1 point

I tried to read some lips and it looked like Lee was saying, "he said he wanted it" or "you said you wanted it. That's what you wanted" to his corner1 point
-
The point of debate seems to be: Is Lee responding to coaches about them complaining about how he manhandled Ayala. (A wrestler they don't like to see easily crushed.) Is Lee responding to coaches about having to wrestle a teammate when he's gimpy. (His interaction with Ayala at the end of the match indicates otherwise.) Don't need to take a poll here... it's obviously #1.1 point

With Ayala wrestling unattached, how much onsite 'power' did they have over Ayala there?1 point
-
My two cents: How could anybody fault Ayala for this? I respect him MORE for wanting to actually wrestle, and why the hell wouldn't he want to go against the great Spencer Lee? ESPECIALLY if he doesn't go with him in the room. Ayala had nothing to lose here. Lee should put the ego aside and look at it from Drake's point of view. Lee is a warrior and if the shoe was on the other foot, he'd have done the same thing.1 point

It's funny because Minnow is a paying hater. At least Basch owns his colors. Minnow legitimately tries to ruin peoples lives just to twist what they say and manipulate their emotions. Look what he did with Swatfords brother last year. Both Swatford and his brother are actually stellar gents. Top notch and more like every day guys than 99% of D1 wrestlers. Minnow took a fiscally and emotionally sensitive situation and abused it for clicks... JUST TO BE OKAY WITH BEING WRONG. I may poke fun at Swatford and his brother - or at least I did on the old forums quite a bit, but for anyone who knew nothing about Minnow before then, that shows you all you need to know about his character. For those who continue to tickle his juevs with your tongues? Do better.1 point

But if you’re watching a college match you probably already understand the scoring system. This just seems like trying to fix a problem that doesn’t really need fixing. Much bigger fish to fry if we’re making changes IMO1 point

"given the expectation level of the participating teams" that's a heck of a qualifier look at how utterly underwhelming some of the high seeds are. 25 of the 40 Top 4 seeds never AA'd. that's a far cry for the Midlands we know and love. i admit, i don't know what the solution is (and that i'll watch it regardless b/c i love wrestling), but man, i miss the great fields and head-to-heads1 point
