The ILLINI have dark horses and some folks who are completely off the radar who could show up. The MSU Open on Saturday will be a coming out party for super young or new ILLINOIS wrestlers. Can't wait to see how they do. At 125, Maximo Renteria would've been a four-time Cali champ but for Covid cancelling his Senior year. Ironically, I believe it was Covid that screwed up his redshirt season leaving him with a terrible record. You could see the Covid hit him in the second period of his second match at last year's MSU Open. Poor fella gassed right off. He forfeited out of the tournament. In high school, besides the state championships, he ragdolled Dylan Ragusin and beat a four-time Mizzou state champ. With Cardani out or limited at the start of the season, we will see a lot of Maximo. I think he could be very good. At 141, Danny Pucino's been around for a bit, but hasn't started because of Carr and Duncan. In the free season two years ago, he did beat Dylan D'Emilio and the Wisconsin starter in duals when Duncan was out. He also beat Frankie Tal-Shahar in an extra match pretty handily. His toughest competition at the MSU Open looks to be D'Emilio, Jordan Decatur and Frankie Tal-Shahar--again ironically--and it could be a coming out party for him. He'd have to beat two of those guys, barring upsets, and that would place him as an obvious AA threat. On another note, he's wrestled for the Italian freestyle team at age group and Senior-level tournaments. He's fun, dangerous and exciting to watch. Four years left on his clock, too. At 149, Kevon Davenport was a four-time Michigan state champ. He transferred from Nebraska stuck behind Ridge Lovett. I have no idea how he'll do this year, but he's beaten Dean Heil in freestyle, and he had a pretty good redshirt year with the stupid Cornhuskers. The good news for the ILLINI is that if he falters, there are a couple of other transfer guys who could make noise at the weight: Jake Harrier and Anthony Federico. Whoever wins the spot, I think, is gonna be a threat to AA. At 174 and 184, there are Edmond Ruth and Dylan Connell. Ruth seems to be enjoying life as an ILLINI, and who knows how good he can be. He entered two opens last year unattached and won them both. He'll have Demetrius Romero and Ethan Smith at the MSU Open, as well as some mid-level talent, so we'll get to see how far he's progressed. Again, the ILLINI have two guys waiting in the wings at this weight (Sizemore and Ernd). Connell was a four-time ILLINOIS state champ, total old school tough wrestler, rides hard, and had a very nice 25-6 record as a true freshman redshirt. He's a baby face and may need some adjustment time, but down the road....4 points

There's no way to formulate a full opinion on this until we see Spencer on the mat. If he looks like he did before the injuries or even most of the way, the odds are really good he wins. If he doesn't, that changes. We don't have near enough information at this point to make that determination.3 points

Forum respect is built upon your contribution to the forum, whether it be knowledge (usually gained from personal experienc), observations (usually gained as being a conscious fan/spectator), or wit/humor (you either have it or you don't). I wrestled for 12 years. Loved the sport, wasn't a D1 calibre, but have an intense love of the sport. I'm now a middle aged man living vicariously through others in my Fandom and am having fun on the mat thru BJJ. I contribute here and there, make some controversial comments from time to time, but don't really feel disrespected. We are a community of folks that care about wrestling and that is our common bond.2 points

So I coach at our area's inner city school... gonna ramble here One of the biggest things I think is understanding circumstances and the wrestlers as a coach.... For instance, I had a kid not shave before a meet so I'm a little aggravated and pull him aside, turns out no one has ever taught him to shave (he lives in a foster facility). I had another kid not making it to practice because his mom was too drunk, two dad's last season OD during season. Nuance that is needed (not saying be a players coach but also not being a hard liner) If you can address things that the team can provide before it even reaches the wrestlers, its a big difference (providing and washing practice gear daily, finding a business to pay for or subsidize costs, etc...) Some kids need wrestling and wrestling needs some kids, but drawing the line of a kid needing wrestling and a kid taking other kids down Content needs to be relatable, to be blunt Dan Gable posters and old Iowa content do not work (or at least for us) Showing that you are prepared helps a long way to the kids looking up to you as dependable, don't wing practices Give the kids something to want that isn't wrestling.. So we do a lock in, chili supper, jv buffett, a few overnights, xmas break basketball tourney, full team “field trip”, special “black team” gear for varsity at the end, etc... In the offseason, going to places they haven't been to (like kayaking, hiking, etc..) Kids quit when they don't get playing time in any sport, so make sure JV kids get matches, ours will get 18/20 a season We write postcards to every incoming freshman in the summer inviting them out to wrestling, do a free two week elementary league at all of our feed elementary schools and then do a big meet at the end of it (making the high school kids coach at each of the schools before than get any end of the year awards), give out multi sport shorts for kids doing more than one sport, give out preseason shirts, etc... (we make and give away shirts for everything) At the end of the day, wrestling is just the tool you have to impact them2 points

Would you believe that there are people within unmentionable circles that would say that Smith hasn't improved since arriving in Cbus? The gall! Horrible take. Preposterous.1 point

Agree. Probably would make more sense to not include anyone that is ranked & blue chip recruits making their first start. But when the questioned is phrased "anyone outside the top 10" it broadens who qualifies.1 point

Sammy Alvarez now that he is up at 141 and not cutting too much due to Seabass transferring in. He had weight management and other issues the last two seasons which caused him not to have full seasons but is at his preferred weight now. Due to these circumstances he is being left off a lot of preseason lists but he should be surprising a lot of people this year.1 point

Thanks for sharing. How do you read the next subsection 13.1.1.3.1.1? It doesn’t take effect until next year, but looks like it would cover this situation, no?1 point

Its a mistory, if you figure it out you'll know something about me. Profile name is pretty simple but only one former poster I know of figured it out, he was a NC if that helps. Regarding the pic, didnt have one on the other board, added my puma paw print pic from Brazil, someone thought I was a Nittany Lion fan so changed to this one. If you look real close thats a reflection of me in the pic. Thats all my hints for now.1 point
