Thoughts on the no call in the Arnold/Ryder match? And also, thoughts on the reaction time rule? I feel like the reaction time rule will be eliminated in the offseason. Is it too subjective

Arnold, who i like as little as any ncaa wrestler, was treated as badly by the refs in that match as any wrestler since Ryan churella.

Could have gone either way every time that scenario comes up.   But when you leave it to the refs who made the call on the mat to review their own call it’s very unlikely for them to change.

The real issue is this has happened to Arnold several times on last second attempts.  Why can TnT not get the kid to pull the shot attempts sooner.

Takedown, we might need to consider once takedown criteria is established its a takedown and eliminate reaction time.  However, I get the point of folkstyle is control, tough to figure out what is best, certainly consistency is lacking some.  I did not like the final stall when both wrestlers appeared completely out of bounds.  I don't understand if both are outside the cylinder before the follow up dive action even began how it can be a stall? You could see Gabe walking back to center thinking we are both OOB, time for a restart...and I'm for calling more stalling in many cases.

Will have to be at least one more year; the rules only change in odd years

Takedown.  Arnold completed the takedown, then Ryder went through a not very fast reach back to get the whizzer.  I would say his reaction failed and it really took a second attempt to get to the whizzer.

TD for me.  Hard to understand why Ryder was so happy to win that match that way.

Agree. TD. Not a stall in OT. Am guessing Ryder reacted that way knowing he was gifted that match. Ryder still could have won the match without the stall call, but he benefited from 2 missed calls.

I didn’t like that stall call in SV but I don’t mind the no takedown call there.

I do think Ayala had a takedown in the sequence starting at about 5:35 here though:

Rock knows the rules very well, and he thought it was a takedown. I thought it was too. But they rarely overturn calls. It feels almost egotistical that these calls never got changed, but it's supposed to be independently reviewed by someone off the mat, right? Even in duals?

I thought it was a takedown. And what a major let down, Gabe shoots the first time in his wrestling career and is rewarded with that? Great. He’s never doing that again…

Seriously though, he got screwed, twice. Didn’t even get dinner or any drinks first.

The stall call seemed to occur because Ryder took a shot. He took a shot when they were both out of bounds so why does the shot mean anything?

Didn't they eliminate reaction time like 10 years ago?  Then that lead to a lot of challenges and flash TDs that people didn't like so they brought it back.  Now it's going to eliminated again?  How many times will the cycle repeat?

I have no idea. What made it worse is that Ryder paused a good second before realizing that a free-point was up for grabs. Arnold kicks out, both guys relax, and then Ryder takes the shot out of bounds.

I guess I don't understand the rule. Maybe without a pause it's an "action" call?

Re Arnold's throw-by: Takedown. Ryder reset before reaching back for the whizzer

correct whistle should have been when Ryder steps out before he shoots

I agree it looked like he was already out of bounds and it prob should not have been called (havent yet seen replay).  But if you are Arnold and have already been warned then why back up if Ryder is out and cant take you down.  Gabe threw his headgear when he got off the mat, I was sitting just above Iowa walk in corner.  It was still there on floor hwt match.  TnT antics after 184 for pretty hilarious.

Is there a way to get a hold of the current rule book? Id like to look at the take down criteria and reaction time section.

I think thats a much easier fix than stalling. Stall calls will always be subjective.

Unless im mistaken this is the entire description of what a take down is and what reaction time is. It is embarassingly vauge and brief considering how important take downs are.

SECTION 2. TAKEDOWNS

Art. 1. Match Takedowns. A takedown shall be awarded when, from the neutral

position, a competitor gains control of the opponent by taking the opponent down

to the mat in bounds and beyond reaction time.

It was a takedown for Arnold. Reaction time needs to be more defined. Way too many examples of inconsistencies with the current rules book. It currently states reaction time is "The amount of time a wrestler is provided by the referee to react to individual scoring or wrestling situations... Reaction time is determined by each individual referee and is described only as a period of time that is not instantaneous."

The reality with Arnold vs. Ryder's match is, you plug another referee in and the match is scored differently here with the same sequence. Same goes for several matches throughout the season. Needs to be defined better or we need a better review process.
