Have you missed me? Well, I have missed you.

But maybe we can remedy that.

Data – And Lots Of It

I have used my time away from this esteemed place of learned men/women wisely. I have been working on a project with @cowcards and @grogs84 to create a database of every D1 NCAA tournament match, and the impact on team scoring using both:

  • the scoring that existed in the day, and
  • what exists now.

The ‘now’ (normalized) scoring is great for comparing across eras even if other rule changes make some of those comparisons less valid than others. As of now the scoring for 1950 - 2025 is up and available. 1928 - 1949 is on its way.

@cowcards and @grogs84 put in a massive amount of work typing all 39,000+ matches into a database. @cowcards has also done a massive amount of detective work to find and fix errors on what had become the default set of brackets we all use (wrestlingstats.com - created by the late, great Jay Hammond).

The brackets have a handful of missing matches, and a handful with incorrect scores that have now been fixed in our database. That is not to say we have not introduced our own unique set of errors. We absolutely have. It is impossible to manually assemble this amount of data covering almost 100 years without some errors creeping in there.

It is now your job to find them. Fare thee well.

Things We Thought We Knew

By putting in the time to re-score every tournament (shout out to @gimpeltf for a lot of insight on how to score, and where to find some dead bodies) we have also been able to find errors in the official NCAA records that we hope will be fixed by the time the next Division I Wrestling Championships Records Book is published.

Did you know that Oklahoma State’s fourth-place tie finish in 1950 was actually a fifth-place finish? Now you do. And so does the NCAA. We will see if they change anything. I have my doubts.

  • Have you ever wondered how years in college affected performance?
  • Or which team has scored the most points on a normalized basis?
  • Or which three wrestlers won five matches at a single NCAA tournament in five different ways?

While I know the answers to all those questions (and more), soon you will too.

The real reason I am here is to announce that I will be taking my talents to @cowcards‘s version of South Beach, accessible here:

A Guru teaming up with a Know Nothing, what could possibly go wrong? Good thing we have a talented programmer like @grogs84 to break the tie.

As many of you already know, @cowcards had created a website where you can find the year-by-year NCAA tournament record of everyone who has ever been in the tournament along with hometowns, high schools, graduation years, etc. Now he has added match-by-match NCAA tournament results.

Who else is sporting a data woody right now? Anyone? Just me? Okay. Never mind.

We have also set up a little playground for yours truly. I will post random musings as well as data deep dives. You know, my usual stuff. But I do want this to be a conversation. To that end comments will be enabled.

And I will be taking requests.

It doesn't feel like anyone read my original post closely. Or this one.

My issue is this. @BobDole made the site worse through his inattention when he let a denial of service attack fester for a week. Then he doubled down and made it worse still through his attention when he decided to take away functionality. It is wild to me that roughly two months later you guys are still dealing with this.

Have reactions. Don't have reactions. Whatever. But to make a decision to actively make the site worse is hard to fathom. Harder still to fathom is @Husker_Du's acceptance that his administrator is making his product worse. I can only assume Bob is volunteering his time because I assume Willie is a better business man than to pay someone to degrade his product.

Assuming I am not banned for speaking my mind I will be back on occasion to let you know what I am doing elsewhere.
