Final X has yielded mixed results so far for Penn State/NLWC:

  • Messenbrink gassed and lost to Carr
  • Barr dominated by Hidlay
  • Duke TF'd 10-0 by Yianni
  • Lilledahl dominated by Lee
  • Dake dominated by Valencia

Maybe Penn State isn't the juggernaut everyone thought it was?

Yeah, these will be tough matches for the Nits if they meet up with those guys at the 2026 NCAAs!

Oh, wait...

I'd ask again why you are the way you are, but I'd get nowhere.

Lee was a heavy favorite.

Barr...was also a dog.

Duke is a Sr in HS who wrestled a 4X National Champ.

Did ANYONE think these guys were "unbeatable?"

In fact, I think Flow picked these matches and...didn't they ALL pick this except for Mesenbrink?

Is it true a very unreliable poster suggested that Iowa will beat them this.

Wrestlers who made the world team and have wrestled at least 1 match for the school and RTC. Iowa 1/ PSU 1

LOL... PSU has a World Champ, a guy who just took 3rd and now a World Team Member all joining their record breaking team last year.

Wrestlers who will score a single team point for Iowa in the future-0

Wrestlers who will score points for Penn State in the future.

Duke beat a 4X Champ and a World Silver Medalist...
Blaze just smoked a guy who's a 3X AA and took 2nd at a weight higher than he'll Wrestle!

Haines won easily and Mesenbrink is running through 165 the next 2 years.

But impressive little narrow pathway for Iowa to tie PSU in...some way!

PSU will have 2 senior world team members and 6 Senior national team members on their NCAA roster.  When was the last time a team had as many?  Additionally they have 4 other wresters on age group world teams: Blaze (61kg U20), Duke (70kg U20), Henckel (79kg U20), Connor Mirasola (92kg U20), Cole Mirasola (125kg, U20), Welsh (86kg U23) and Welsh is also on the senior ladder somewhere having finished 5th at senior nationals 86kg.  They will also have 2024 61kg world champ Masanosuke Ono and Joe Sealy who was 3rd at the U20 trials in the room.  A crazy accomplished team in freestyle.

57kg Lilledahl 2nd

61kg none (Blaze 4th)

65kg Marcus Blaze 3rd

70kg PJ Duke 1st

74kg Mesenbrink 2nd

79kg Haines 1st

86kg None (Welsh 5th at senior nationals)

92kg Barr 2nd

97kg None

125kg None

Blaze took 3rd at 61kg, too. He beat Davino 7-0 for 3rd at the Open.

I meant 4th on the ladder.  3rd at the open is 4th on the ladder since Arujau was sitting at Final X.  Open runner-up Seth Gross had beaten Blaze earlier in the tournament so there was no need for a true second/third at that weight.  Unlike 57kg where the open runner up and 3rd place finisher did not meet in the tournament.  So, Cronin and Provo wrestled for true third at 57kg at final x.

61KG ladder is

1 - TBD Forrest/Arujau

2- TBD Forrest/Arujau

3 - Seth Gross

4 - Marcus Blaze

Welsh was #6 in his class and though not on the national team was in the list you quoted.

I think it's a surprise to have 6 athletes with college eligibility left on the senior national team much less all on the same team with multiple years left.  In 2023 the top three in men's freestyle were as follows.  Eight with eligibility left and no more than 2 on the same team.  This is also a little skewed due to COVID Brooks, Camacho, Sasso, and Steveson were all class of 2018 and Arujau and Fix were class of 2017.  Only O'Toole and Trumble were within 5 years of graduating high school.  All 6 of PSU's senior national team members are.

2. Thomas Gilman
3. Nick Suriano/Jacob Camacho

Who starts 157 for penn state next year?  I haven't seen anything from Kasak since nationals.  Is that code for Kasak had surgery and is in recovery?  Usually he competes in the freestyle season.

I think that back in 2022 when he was still at Minnesota.  Kasak has a cadet/U17 world silver from before PSU too.  I was listing accomplishments from this freestyle season.

I thought maybe you only did the 6 that were top 3.  Welsh was 6 on Flo's big board.  Looks like Willie got it right here.
