Sayonara!

Albania is now on standard time rather than daylight- they do it a week earlier plus there's a delay with UWW- they're talking about 6am edt (9 minutes from now)

I am actually pumped David got Sadulaev round one. He has been a slow starter in his last few tournaments, and this is likely his first time down to scratch 92kg since 2016? I think he probably got a few kg for his wrestle off.

I think if they both start slow, that is a recipe for disaster for DT.  Sadulaev can win a low scoring affair with anybody on the planet at any weight.

I keep wanting to envision this being like DT's 2nd match with Yazdani (the one in the 1st round at Worlds) and I am having trouble doing that.  I was pretty confident in DT's 2nd match with Yazdani, because he broke Yazdani their first go-round, even if it was a come-from-behind Pinfellery.

Peak had a very nice win to start, and then Greco went full American.

🙂 is it time for Taylor vs Sad yet?

Ah... I had to peak at the brackets to get the gist of what you're saying.

Got it now!

(NOT pretty, in a USA greco kind of way, that is. 😏 )

... AND that won't happen until Wednesday (damn it that UWW paired them right off the bat!)

Just 2 random underachieving guys who couldn't compete at the Olympics and are new to the weight.
Perfectly  normal pairing 😉

Can't wait.... if DT wins this, it'll be perfect retirement story .

While it might be Wednesday, most people will have been sleeping by the time they have wrestled, so most gents on this forum will wake up to whatever the result was.

Well... it looks like Hafizov is still waiting to see if he'll get pulled into repechage (depending IF Hamadli of Azerbiajan win against Aslanyan of Armenia in the semis.)

All others from the US have been eliminated today.

Well... apparently Hafizov DID get pulled into repechage.

(But from the looks of it, it doesn't look like it will be a walk in the park.)

Happy we are getting Taylor-Sadulaev in the first round. Wrestling needs more events like this. One of the greatest ever at 86 meeting one of the greatest ever at 97 for a catchweight fight, with a decent possibility neither will ever wrestle on the world stage again. This is wrestling's Hagler-Leonard. Who would've thought that a match of this magnitude would ever be possible? I'm actually more excited for this bout than I was for the Olympics.

Awww... 72Kg semis in the bottom bracket.

The wrestler from China, who beat Türkiye's Selcuk Can (2nd seed), lost.

Booger is eliminated.

@nhs67 makes a valid point about Sadulaev winning a grinder but I agree Taylor would have a round one match advantage in terms of rust factor and with Sadz coming off the scales. Someone mentioned in an earlier discussion that the cut to 92 ain't no thang for Sadulaev, but we'll see.

Everyone is talking about how hard the cut is going to be for Sadulaev but no one seems concerned that he might actually gain quite a bit from getting back in tip top shape. It's the Russian Tank for crying out loud!

We know how that got to this weight and point.   If you don't think it is still one of the best matchups in freestyle history, please tell us one that supersedes a 7 time World and Olympic Champion (2 Olympic Golds and 5 World titles) vs. a 4 time World and Olympic Champion (not to mention that they also both have a silver at Worlds).

The first and second Sad vs Snyder for starters.

I think Greco is down, not just in the US. Freestyle is going to have Sadulaev, Taylor, Burroughs; Greco has only people hard cores would know about or badly struggling wrestlers.

Just not many stars left in Greco. I guess Aleksanjan, and RIza are the closest things left. Besides that there is a lot of parity, new champions: I don't think that's good.

Decline could be the new normal for Russia in this style. They don't have a single gold medalist (again). Center of Greco is moving firmly east, past Eastern Europe.
