Wrestleknownothing Posted February 16, 2023 Share Posted February 16, 2023 I was asked to coach my daughter's soccer team one year. I had never played and never coached. There was some dishonesty involved by the team organizers and we wound up having to play U18 even though we had players as young as 13 and only 3 17 year-olds. But enough about my excuses. We went 0-12-1. I missed the tie, so I was 0-12 as head coach and the assistant was 0-0-1. My daughter was the co-high scorer on the team with 1 goal. Won my first varsity match as a Junior , probably late in the season. By my senior year of college I was beating guys who were placing 2nd (by pin) and 3rd (16-14) in my state during my losing streak. (Large prestigious one class state.) treep2000 Posted February 16, 2023 Share Posted February 16, 2023 I wasn't bad, but I wasn't great either. Concussions is what did me in and my career, too early. Now a middle aged man living vicariously through everyone else. I had some headscratcher losses, some big wins, and then some matches where all I could do is lose and try not to get pinned (thank you Joe Heskett). Three time third place district finisher when the top two qualify for state (top three go now). Lost the JV match..... teched the varsity opponent. Was third on the depth chart of five 88-pounders (Yes, I'm that old). Lost every wrestle-off to the JV starter, who was also a freshman. Tortured by the varsity starter (a sophomore) in practice. Finally, late in the season, we had a dual against a team who also had three wrestlers, so he and I wrestled an exhibition match (in my practice gear, because you had to be a JV starter to get a singlet.) I took him down and rode him out, earning a 3-0 decision with riding time (Yes, I'm that old). Shortly thereafter broke my arm wrestling (in gym class!) so that was the end of my season. At the start of sophomore year there was this girl that I had a crush on, and she was trying out for the school play, so I went too. She failed the audition, but I got the lead, so, since after-school rehearsals conflicted with wrestling practice, that was the end of my wrestling career. Pretty sure that some invisible hand made sure that I ended up where my relative talents (and lack thereof) belonged. My son had a nice high school career, one of the best wrestlers on his team. But, whenever I thought he might be getting a big head I reminded him that his old man had retired from wrestling no only undefeated, but also unscored upon. 3 2 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was a volunteer wrestling throwing dummy coach for many many years and enjoyed that. Freshman year: weighed 98 lbs and was behind the returning state runner up Sophomore year: ineligible due to transfer Junior year: was ejected from a car and broke my pelvis and jaw into multiple pieces. Was in a wheel chair to start the season. Ended up taking 7th at states Senior year: shoulder torn and dislocated. Injury defaulted into oblivion. College: wrestled club but my shoulder never held up even after multiple surgeries. 500 wrestler Posted February 17, 2023 Share Posted February 17, 2023 Definitely in the middle, as per my moniker. Freshman year, first year of wrestling every, started at JV at 119 and went 5-0, after 2 pound allowance dropped down to 114 and was thrown to the wolves at varsity. I was strong and kept most losses to a decision. Ended up going 3-12 on varsity; interestingly one of my 3 wins was a 27-4 win (no tech falls back then) against another freshman who became a regional champ his junior year, a big deal in NJ. Big jump sophomore year, full season around .500, got some league honors, better records junior and senior year but both seasons cut short due to injury, so it all added up to a little better than .500. Not many sports you can start as a freshman and be a 4 year varsity starter. The highlight of my career though was coming in 2nd in the intramural tournament my senior year of college at Cornell, got teched in the final by a guy who had just quit the wrestling team the week before.
