  2. Hope both men have successful surgeries. Prayers up. The Latona's have been a part of VT wrestling for nearly a decade. Everyone knows Sam, but his older brother Dom started wrestling at VT in 2016. The Brothers have always been hard working, humble and selfless. Sam sacrificed a couple years with a severe cut to help VT get the best lineup on the mat. Nice to see the family receive a wonderful gift from Coach Robie. VT Wrestling Tweet

  3. I'm not surprised that Penn State isn't doing this. I'm a little surprised at what salty b I t c h e s some of the fans are being about the event daring to exist.

  13. As a Penn State fan and alumni, I really don't understand the hatred towards this event. I get why Cael will say no, the timing of it doesn't really make any sense, but the current wrestling season calendar doesn't either. If you have a team full of kids attempting to make world teams throughout the fall, they likely aren't "optimized" to compete in early November. This being said, as a wrestling fan, why would you not want to see at least most of the nations top teams compete. Particularly in a dual meet setting.

  16. I want to just let this year soak in first....enjoyed watching the Masters this weekend. Watching McIlroy sink that last put on 18 and then the very iconic walk to the club house to sign his scorecard.....embracing his friends, wife, daughter and more after 17 Masters and 11 attempts to complete the Grand Slam....the EMOTIONS....wow. This has to be in my top 15 most iconic sports moments/finishes of all-time....one of those was actually the state volleyball championship my daughter's senior year in high school. It's great to be alive in my lifetime to be able to have witnessed the likes of Nicklaus, Woods, Ali, Jordan, S. Williams, Sampras, Federer, Djokovic, Nadal, Brady....enough of those guys.....Medved, Belaglozov, B. Satiev, Tediashvili, Saduliev, Fadzaevand more. Add to that all the great music/genres......W. Nelson, Brooks, Jackson, Brooks and Dunn, McIntire (more of those where they came from), then there's the Beatles, Chicago, Journey, Foreigner, Beach Boys, Four Season, Lionel Ritchie, Four Tops, Temptations,....the list goes on and on. Then top it off with attending 46 NCAA Wrestling Championships, 40 in a row, and countless other events, World Cups, World Championships, Big Tens, State tournaments. Great to be alive. Next stop.....I'm going fishing!!

  18. And when they added multiple turns and when they added step outs. Techs are a lot easier to come by in Freestyle. I love almost everything about the current freestyle rules, but I would personally like to see us go back to one turn and then you have to change holds. We got to see a lot more great wrestling IMO

  20. It's a lot of fun to do if you are thinking about it Rodent. I can't say I did good, but it was fun. I was bound and determined I would not lose due to passivity, so I initiated action and my inexperience and lack of ability got me in trouble from there. But I had a blast doing it. mspart

  27. In spite of the fact that it ended with the biggest upset of the tournament, 285 was the most chalk weight. The sum of absolute deviations from seed was 77, just ahead of 125 at 81.5. This also made the heavies the second most chalk weight since the 33 seed era began. Only 165 in 2019 was more chalk. At the other end of the spectrum 141 was the most busted bracket this year (but only sixth most in the 33 seed era). A lot of the "bust" came from five of nine guys seeded to go 0-2 finishing with win(s), and three higher seeded wrestlers doing the opposite.

  28. 2011: Burroughs beat Nick Marable at the 2011 US Open immediately after NCAAs then beat him again at WTT. Dake chose to go to Univeristy Natl's where he got 2nd to Howe, then DNP at WTT. 2012: *Burroughs ran through the 2012 Olympic Team Trials where there were no byes 2013: Burroughs beat David Taylor at the 2013 US Open (Dake didn't compete) and then beat Dake at WTT. 2014 Burroughs won the US Open over Taylor then beat him 2x more at WTT. Dake did not compete at either due to injury. 2015 Burroughs got a bye to the finals and then beat Dake 2x under new direct bye rules. 2016 Burroughs became the real Magic Man when everyone disappeared from 74kg. He won the olympic spot, Dake fell short at 86. However Burroughs did not medal, therefore no direct bye in 2017. 2017 Burroughs once again beats Dake at the US Open, gets a bye at WTT, and then stop me if you have heard this before but JB beat Dake to make the world team. 2018 UWW creates a new 79kg weight class and Dake finally gets a chance to make his mark as he makes his first world team and first world championship. Both win medals. 2019 Dake and JB both enjoy byes to the finals, win spots and world medals 2020ne OTT JB gets the direct bye as the returning 74 medalist, Dake gets a bye to the semis as the 79 medalist and proceeds to snatch Nolf's soul on live television. Dake finally wins. JB and Dake switch weights for a couple years until 2024 OTT where Dake gets the finals bye, JB gets a bye to the semis and loses to Nolf meanwhile NLWC/PSU fans show their true colors. Dake had plenty of chances over the years, he just didn't capitalize on them.

  29. This actually makes the kid more likeable. Not one of those Jesus-crazed robots that fill out the rest of the PSU roster. What's more concerning is that he was taken down and ridden out by a cop.

  33. After the Stanford dual, Ethan said that 149 was a 1 year deal. However, if you are offered a bag of money to stay at 149, you may make that sacrifice and stay down. The reason he went down was because we had two good 157 in CJ Hamblin and Stiles and we were struggling at 149 with injuries. Stiles was actually losing to Hamblin in the Orange/Black wrestle-off and had to come back and get the win in OT. So everyone decided with the team lineup and the landscape of 149, that Stiles should go down. 149 was very tough cut for him to make. His first time down he was up on Gabe Willochell by 6 or 7 points and gassed hard and lost. After that he seemed to manage it ok.

  35. The top teams was invited. If a wrestlers is called to the mat but doesn't show up its a forfeit, you don't change the name or invalidate the guy who ended up winning. PSU doesn't want to put their foot on the line, fine, but they don't then get to say the name should be changed. If PSU wants to be the National Duals Invite champs then they can show up, but they are choosing to let someone else win that title.

  36. When guys get hurt in January and February and have to miss the postseason, we can say they don't have their real roster, and we can also dismiss what happens at NCAAs, right? Lucas Byrd doesn't get to call himself champion because Ryan Crookham wasn't in the tournament, right? No. Like any other time, you go with the best guys available and the results are the results. Lots of guys are worn down by March and aren't the best version of themselves. Again, we don't discount the NCAAs because of it. There is no utopian scenario to get a perfect outcome. You can quibble with things like the date, or the selection criteria, or name of the event ... Or you can appreciate that there are people trying to make this sport bigger and putting their money where their mouth is to make it happen. And appreciate the fact that all these teams want to show up and COMPETE and put on a show for the fans.

  42. Iowa fans should be stoked. Mocco, a junior in high school, got 3 takedowns to 0 against Penn State's starting heavyweight. If Kueter is healthy for the next three years, and then Mocco taking over, they are set for the foreseeable future at heavyweight. Whether Hawkeye fans want a push out in folk or not, there isn't one, so you favor the guy getting all the takedowns. Plus, I don't believe they really want that rule change. I mean do you really think Hawk fans want to start yelling "passivity!" 500 times per match?

  46. I didn’t start wrestling until 9th grade. Got better over the years and won a HS state championship my senior year of HS. In college, I had only one varsity college match. Freshman year at a NAIA/D3 school. I’m the backup 134. Last week of 1st semester. Coach says 142 has a 0.8 gpa and cannot wrestle. Off the team. Tells me I’m going to start my first match against WVU in 2 days. But…We’re putting the starting 134 in to win at 134/142 so I need to weigh in at 134. Match day. I get bumped to 142 against WVU starter. First period, I shoot a takedown in first 30 seconds, but WVU hits me in a cradle and I fight/flop for 2 ½ minutes to end the period down 0-5. 2nd period, I take bottom. I reverse WVU kid and throw in legs. Force a power half for 2 back! I’m only losing 4-5! Then… I get too high, WVU catches my head, pulls me over, and pins me. I come off the mat. Coach grabs me and says, “You scored! You scored!” and he's all excited. I’m pissed at coach. What the hell did he expect? Why is he so surprised? I’m supposed to score and try to win. But…I’m stupid and naïve. Find out later, my opponent: Scott Collins, WVU’s first National Champion. He was only a freshman that year and didn’t win D1 until his senior year, but I can say I scored 4 points against him
