  1. Hope both men have successful surgeries. Prayers up. The Latona's have been a part of VT wrestling for nearly a decade. Everyone knows Sam, but his older brother Dom started wrestling at VT in 2016. The Brothers have always been hard working, humble and selfless. Sam sacrificed a couple years with a severe cut to help VT get the best lineup on the mat. Nice to see the family receive a wonderful gift from Coach Robie. VT Wrestling Tweet

  3. Very nice of you to say! For anyone was was interested in the best sources for transfer portal news, Jon Kozak at Flo has been running this list that shows dates of portal entry by weight, by school, including past accomplishments. It's a huge list and has been a great reference this year. https://www.flowrestling.org/articles/13994973-2025-ncaa-d1-wrestling-off-season-transfer-tracker for a quick glance at who is currently still in the portal, I think wrestlestat has a nice view which is updated quite regularly: https://www.wrestlestat.com/transferportal Intermat keeps a solid list as well that can be a good reference source: as you can imagine - information flows through all different channels for transfer portal news, so sometimes one source gets the update before another does. as an example, intermat has been the only ones showing the Clem brothers from West Virginia to Sacred Heart. Other updates Flo will have first - or Wrestlestat - it's hard to predict.

  11. I think this chart sums up the impact of the NCAA's decision to take away a year of eligibility from the 2016 high school graduating class (approximately) and transfer it to the 2017 and beyond classes (approximately) in college wrestling. Using Willie's Big Board data, out to his top 100 ranked recruits I show the number of All-American honors won by each high school graduating class. Notes: The 2016 graduating class was poised to become the most decorated of the era before the NCAA decided to cancel the 2020 tournament. As it stands, without their final year of eligibility they were only 1 AA behind 2014, equal with 2015, and 5 AA's ahead of 2013. The 2017 - 2019 classes effectively received an extra redshirt allowing them to complete their careers a year older than they would have otherwise. While not all took advantage of the extra year, enough did that is shows up in the data. Curiously, the 2020 class, the direct beneficiaries of the fifth year, did little with it. While 40 of the 100 still have remaining eligibility, only 11 of the 40 have AA'd in the past. The class of 2020 is likely to finish with 50 - 55 AA's. The class of 2021 is a bloodbath. With only 16 total AA's from 9 wrestlers among the top 100 through four years, it is not looking good. The story can be told by its top 2 ranked high schoolers. Paddy Gallagher and Alex Facundo have zero AA's between them. While Facundo still has two years left (3? who really knows for sure at this point?) and Gallagher still has one, even if they AA out it will be historically low.

  12. The NCAA lost a ton of money in 2020 from not having March Madness basketball. The NCAA couldn't afford to lose out on football revenue and basketball revenue in the 2020-2021 school year, but they realized there would be reluctance on the part of athletes to waste a year of eligibility if the season did not happen or was cancelled midway through. They countered this by assuring athletes that participating in 2020-2021 would not harm their eligibility, ensuring that most athletes would agree to play and that the NCAA would get their normal revenue streams. (Don't forget that in the 2020-2021 school year, it didn't seem to be guaranteed that a full season could go off without a hitch)

  15. who created expedited removal? The one and only sir bill ‘the cigar king’ Clinton….. Yes, there is legal precedent for using expedited removal — which limits due process — and it has been used by presidents from both parties over the past 50 years. So, in that context, Trump (or any president) can legally continue or expand this practice, within the boundaries of immigration law and Supreme Court rulings. Key points: Expedited removal was created in 1996 under President Bill Clinton through the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRIRA). It allowed for fast-track deportations of certain undocumented immigrants without a full hearing. Presidents Bush, Obama, Trump, and Biden have all used expedited removal to varying degrees. Trump greatly expanded its scope in 2019 to include undocumented people found anywhere in the U.S. who couldn't prove they had been in the country for at least two years. The Supreme Court upheld the legality of limited due process in expedited removals in DHS v. Thuraissigiam (2020) — ruling that non-citizens without lawful status and caught soon after entry have limited constitutional protections.

  25. Regressing at the individual wrestler level is problematic as the data is not continuous because exact placement only goes to eight. For example, if the 33 seed wrestler wins one match they finish in the 17 to 24 range. But where in that range? Got me. And the discrete jumps are largest for the lowest finishes. Wrestlers who finish 0-2 in (ish) are a group of 9. Wrestlers who finish 1-2 are a group of 8. The round of 12 and 16 are groups of 8. And everything else is groups of 1. So measure to the mid-point of the range and regressed at the team level in an attempt to smooth out some of the discontinuity, but that was pretty unsatisfactory. The R-squared was a paltry 0.1255. Here is what that looks like for the 21 teams that averaged 6 NQ per year filtered down to just the years they had at least 5.

  28. 10 / 9 / 8 / 5 / 2 all seem interesting. Comment on all but 10 specifically Here are the top 10 reasons a U.S. student visa (F-1, J-1, or M-1) might be revoked or terminated: Failure to Maintain Full-Time Enrollment Students must remain enrolled full-time unless granted special permission. Unauthorized Employment Working off-campus without authorization (e.g., without CPT/OPT for F-1 students) violates visa terms. Academic Dismissal or Suspension Poor grades, cheating, or violations of school policies can lead to dismissal — and loss of visa status. Overstaying the Visa Staying in the U.S. beyond the grace period after a program ends can result in visa revocation. Criminal Activity Any criminal charges, including DUI, drug possession, theft, or violent offenses, can lead to revocation. Failure to Report Changes Not reporting changes in address, school, or program to your Designated School Official (DSO) can result in status loss. Providing False Information Lying on your visa application or providing fake documents can cause immediate revocation. Disengagement from Classes If you stop attending classes (even if technically enrolled), you can fall out of status. Violation of School Rules or Honor Codes Academic dishonesty or behavioral issues can get you expelled and affect your visa. National Security or Immigration Enforcement Reasons If a student is suspected of having ties to prohibited organizations or activities, the U.S. government can revoke their visa immediately.

  30. Time for some regression analysis Take all the performers and their seeds and see if there is a relationship between seed and under/over performance. A #1 seed can never overperform, but is a 32 seed more likely to over-perform than an 8 seed? Is there an optimum seed for overperforming?

  33. I do like the idea that you have to complete the rideout for the win. Like you said with the 12 vs 15 seconds of riding time, when the first guy on bottom escapes immediately, then the match just turns into the other wrestler having to choose neutral and try to get a TD while the other guys backs up and stalls for 30 seconds. If one guys escapes in 2 seconds and the other escapes in 5 seconds, is that really how we should be deciding the match? I'm a bit surprised and think stalling needs to be adjusted to compensate for the three point takedown. After this years NCAA tournament, it really stuck out to me how easy it is to win if you score the first takedown. The tactic is simply to score the first takedown, then turn to wrestling a defensive match. Go into the third period up 4-2, wrestle just enough to only get called for stalling twice (it's pretty hard to get hit for stalling 3 times in 2 minutes), and win 4-3. I call it the Antrell Taylor special after he used it against both Bianchi in the quarters and Blaze in the finals. McGowan nearly pulled it off against Vincent Robinson, but blew it by getting taken down with 1 second left.

  35. No but if everybody gets due process all the time for everything then explain what loop hole Obama found to deport so many and conduct drone assasination strikes. Reason being is then Trump can use said loop hole and everybody will be happy.

  37. Davison strikes me as a dude who could do really well at 97kg. He got too big for 197 but was incredibly fast as a smaller HWT. Feldman seems to have regressed as he’s gotten bigger. That said, I think he’d do better at 125kg than he would at 97kg. Rock, hard place. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

  39. I don't understand the rationale for hitting a guy for stalling on top. It is incongruous with the riding time point incentive. We already make it harder to ride with things like the locked hands rule. If you think it's still too easy, ban certain positions. Riding is controlling and isn't that what folkstyle is about?

  43. I'd argue if Bo spent less time trying to become a striker and more time becoming what Askren was in MMA, grappling and bullying people / hammer fisting tf out of everyone, he'd do better. You keep referring to Askren in the UFC when he was a shell of his former self and obviously out of shape. You keep dismissing his Lawler win.... Tell me how often your arms go limp while you're consciously and actively defending yourself. Quite the defensive move by a veteran like Lawler. This is why people are focusing on the Askren part of your comments.
