Good lord. Reading through this thread makes me realize how much the internet has skewed our views of everything, glamorizing hot take, knee-jerk reactions to anything that doesn't result in the perfect outcome. You aren't a serious person if you're calling for Brands' job. You just aren't. He's been at Iowa 17 years and has never finished lower than 8th at the NCAA tournament and that happened in his first year. Since then, he's never finished lower than 5th (and that was only once) and has four national titles - and probably missed out on a fifth during the COVID season. I think he behaves like a complete idiot and has the reasoning skills of a 7-year-old, but you're out of your damn mind if you're trying to run him off.4 points

Just from the last two years, you have Drake Ayala, Max Murin, Cobe Siebrecht, and Nelson Brands. Going back to the year before, you have Austin Desanto, Kaleb Young, Michael Kemerer, and Jacob Warner. All got undeniably better while they were in college. They won a title and were a heavy favorite for a second prior to the COVID cancellation. Are those both Penn State reload years?4 points

Every year is a reload year. The nature of collegiate sports. And Iowa has been the clear second best team since 2010. And in Brands' Iowa tenure B.C. they were clearly top dog. And from 2007 - 2023 they have nothing to be ashamed of (or if they do, every other team save one has more to be ashamed of). And off the top of my head I will go with Austin DeSanto, Max Murin, Zach Glazier, Pat Lugo. I am sure there are a lot more.3 points

Except they would have the opportunity to win 5 if they wanted to. Bottom line is winning 4 NCAA titles is beyond impressive, but folks are always looking for opportunities to knock the guys they don't root for. As a Mizzou fan, I'm just enjoying the O'Toole era, regardless of how it ends up.3 points

I'm with Fred on this one. Cinnabunz keeps the board lively...and I like that.3 points

I think we all know 2nd place is the ceiling here. For the Bucks to keep up with Mich, Iowa, Nebraska, VT they need bonus points in matches they should win, and maybe an upset or 2 by the big pinners McCrone and Rogotzke. (Easier said than done) Ohio St could finish 2nd or they could finish 12th. They are young, but they are gritty.3 points

They won a team title two years ago and have taken third and second since then. People have got to stop the madness.3 points

Ohio state is looking tough, they have some people on there rosters that could make a deep run in march and make it under the lights. The question is will all of them live up to it? could the be a NCAA threat this year??2 points

You may be right - and yet in spite of that - a conservative clean cut school like Notre Dame or Boston College do not have an active D1 program. And Brown does. So for all the hippies out there - there's got to be a couple wrestlers. Askren always had a bit of a hippy vibe to me.2 points

First off, I think a Penn State shutout of Iowa is EXTREMELY unlikely. The dual is at CHA which mean Iowa will get some benefit from the refs. I think they win at least 4 of 10 matches (Ayala, Woods, Franek, Caliendo). However, if Penn State managed to shut out the Hawks this would be a first...and also two huge losses in a row for Iowa. Would this actually cause the Brands' seats to become warm or even hot?2 points

I agree with TylerDurden and Vak that people's perceptions are skewed to ask "what have you done for me lately more than ever." It explains exaggerated feelings with increasing regularity prematurely. My example of a senior becoming conditioned like a Pavlov's dog in just 6 years' time is a testament to the expectant observer's state of mind.2 points

Someone at NCAA's a few years ago came out to "Stuck in the Middle With You", which is an excellent choice for a wrestling match. Obviously, Spencer's Pokémon theme song was incredible. I don't even like Pokémon, but it was so funny.2 points

Wrestled my brother back in the day at a big (40 to 50 man bracket) tournament – a lot of things had to happen for us to meet, but we did. He almost teched me. Ended up seeing him in a dual the next year. Our grandmother was there and he was nice enough to keep it to a low major decision that time. He was the younger one. The end.2 points

Sometimes these arguments become so tiresome when people bog them down with ASSumptions and semantics. I have not read on here that anyone said, including me, there shouldn't have been and shouldn't be amendments to the constitution. What I hear people say is that the basis of it and the intent of it should be the first priority and changed, following the prescribed process to do so, instead of just throwing it out the window because of some political ideology and people thinking "it doesn't fit any longer". It does fit in its intent and shouldn't be changed without extreme vetting and interrogation.2 points

Let's do a hypothetical comparison. What about Steiber? He competed attached in 5 seasons. He took multiple losses during his first freshman season and most likely wouldn't have won the national title. An injury allowed him to wipe that season out and start over, and then he won 4 straight. Is that more impressive to you than what O'Toole has the potential to do? (Mind we are counting our chickens, here.) The argument is that only Dake is actually 4 out of 4 as all others took a redshirt of some sort. The difference being that O'Toole was effectively allowed to compete as an attached athlete during the season he would have otherwise redshirted. If he was a year older and took a redshirt in 2020 and then had 5 NCAA tournaments to win 4 titles, it would be a different story.2 points

Someone is going to finish 8th who thought they had a chance to finish 2nd. It's that even. The trophy race (outside of PSU) is going to be fascinating this year.2 points

Where would anyone get information regarding someone not wrestling in the meet? I suggested it could happen (not Bartlett but just certain guys not going) but that just seemed like a possibility due to how often it seems to happen for one reason or another. I have to doubt that anyone affiliated with the PSU program or Iowa program that has intimate knowledge of the situation would divulge that. Certainly the wrestlers know better and the coaches definitely wouldn't reveal that.2 points
-
Nope. There is no chance PSU loses unless they have at least 2 more of their guys out due to injury But tOSU certainly has a shot at 2nd. They’re not built all that different to OSU IMO Wrestlestat ratings highest to lowest: tOSU: 4, 9, 10, 13, 14, 14, 19, 25, 26, 33 Ok St: 2, 2, 8, 10, 11, 12, 13, 15, 17, 23 The biggest advantage OK St has is Plott, who is rated 2nd but whose highest finish is 6th down a weight. When you factor that Welsh is probably way too low and should likely be more around the 12ish range, tOSU would really only need to overperform by less than 2 places on average and OK St underperform by less than 2 places on average and they’d be right about the same score, especially considering tOSU has more bonus potential IMO.2 points

If a city town whatever needs $X in property tax to run, and there are 10 even sized properties to make it easy you’d split it X/10. But if one like a church is exempt you now split it X/9, so it is coming out of your wallet2 points

You’re bouncing all over the place on this. There is no more rational or less political structure, anywhere. The truth is, the court has suffered from activists, no matter which party they were nominated by, than by originalist/textualists. In fact, your complaints and solutions both would pull the court to a more political state to satisfy.2 points

This is just the social contract. People without kids pay for local schools. People who don’t drink soda subsidize the dental insurance of those who do. People who don’t eat meat subsidize ranchers and those who do. People who don’t give a shit about football have their taxes go to a new stadium. Sometimes you pay for things that don’t benefit you directly because they benefit society as a whole or enough people like it or we’ve decided we can’t or shouldn’t regulate people to that extent. If you’re so worried about who pays for an abortion maybe the guy who had sex with the women you’re calling whores can pay for it? He also probably knows sex can result in a pregnancy.2 points

I regularly bag on the brands for some of their decision making and the way they run the program, but I think this is some elephant-sized hyperbole. We are witnessing a time where one program simply cannot be competed against, because they have something very special going on, and everyone else is competing for second place. I would say, if anything, the brands, probably Terry especially, have a penchant for wanting to help the kid who is down on his luck and/or incapable of totally controlling himself. I will go so far as to say they saved austin desanto many years in jail with the work they put in with him. I also would not chalk the ferrari saga up to blind desire to compete. I think they wanted to mentor/father in a way to make the world better, and it was tough to admit defeat. There are a handful of big letter programs in the country that have real legacies of producing consistent AA’s for more than a decade. They are Iowa, Penn State, Okie State, Ohio State, Nebraska, and Cornell. Of these programs, only two have transitioned from their founding figurehead coach. Yes I know Ohio State was good before Tom Ryan, but his arrival was a total regime change, not a continuation of the same tree. I want to include Minnesota here, but they are clearly not at the same level as when Robinson was the coach. The only other team to transition seemingly well from a head coach leaving has been Cornell, which leads me to believe that Mike Grey was just running the program behind the scenes anyway. As far as running a blockbuster program, which is under the biggest microscope in the sport, I’d say the brands are doing a pretty good job. They regularly turn average guys into AA contenders, and they do the spirit and the legacy of the program justice every year, even when it seems like they might stumble. Most importantly, it really seems like they graduate good young men, and legitimately develop character, probably as well as any other head coach.2 points

Yes and then they can write it off on taxes. That is a subsidy. https://www.keepertax.com/tax-write-offs/farmer#:~:text=The cost of livestock%2C like,be deducted on your taxes.&text=Food to feed livestock on the farm is considered tax-deductible.&text=Write off seeds and plants you purchase to grow and harvest.&text=Small supplies like shovels and,to farm are tax-deductible.1 point

Write offs for live stock and their feed, insurance, the acreage itself, grazing on public land, etc. The US gov massively subsidizes the meat industry overall.1 point

This is an astonishing debate, but I really don’t think it can be had enough, bc puberty sure as heck isn’t stopping anytime soon. How do you work around the notion that: 1) bad things happen, and people who are pregnant as a result of these terrible things are still required to have that child in some states? 2) Reproductive capability occurs ~ a full decade before feasible parenthood in our society today? Also, I definitely expect we will see businesses and homebuyers voting with their feet, lots of these anti-abortion laws have been on the books ready to go into affect since roe v. wade first came down. This is a reality that is going to really drag down a lot of different states. You will see major divestment from most of the population 40 and under.1 point
