  1. I hate to sound like a Debbie Downer here, but you guys know this is my life … I will watch every level, every style and it’s to the point where if there’s a college hockey game on, I’ll watch that over most duals except the big ones. As a consumer on my own time, I want to also be entertained. I’m not actively reporting on things as they happen anymore so what am I watching in my free time? It’s becoming increasingly hard to just have wrestling on and be engaged in a lot of the product. Most of it now is just scanning results and going back to watch specific bouts that were eye-catching … when given a more exciting sports option, wrestling is going to have to do more things. And I love wrestling.

  2. Do they ever try out these rules in live exhibition matches or tournaments? Seems silly to change the rules without first having an opportunity to see how they would operate in a real live match. Sometimes ideas that seem great on paper have unintended consequences that you only see in a real world situation.

  3. 3 point takedown is idiotic. You’ve now made it easier to get one takedown and ride out and sit on a lead.

  4. I'm really taken aback by how significant some of these changes are. I think they are almost all very good. But I am just surprised that so much progress is being attempted all at once. Not opposed to it - just didn't expect it.

  5. This somehow seems a funny / sad cliché given recent 'no Muhammad... no false prophets' hubbub.

  6. I just gave you literal facts. The year before that it was Kem vs. Hidlay at 174 , with a relative wash but advantage NC State because of the head to head win, 184 clear advantage NC State, 197 clear advantage Iowa (all of this is discounting heavyweight, where Iowa holds a clear advantage. That year UNI went 2-2 at 174, Keckeisen took 3rd, and DNQ at 197 again. The year before that (2021) Kemerer took second at 174 while NC State DNQ and UNI went 0-2. Hidlay took second at 184, Brands went 1-2, and Keckeisen took 3rd. At 197, Warner took 4th, NC State went 0-2, and UNI again didn't qualify. Two years before that (Due to COVID) Iowa DNQ at 174, NC State went 1-2, and UNI also DNQ. At 184, Wilcke went 2-2, Reenan went 0-2 for NC State, and Foster won it for UNI. At 197, freshman Jacob Warner took 7th, Malik McDonald went 1-2 for NC State and UNI again DNQ. The year before that, Joey Gunther went 0-2 for Iowa at 174, Daniel Bullard went 1-2 for NC State, and Taylor Lujan lost in the blood round for UNI. Mitchell Bowman went 2-2 at 184, Pete Renda went 2-2 and lost in the blood round for NC State, and Drew Foster went 1-2 for UNI. At 197, Cash Wilcke went 3-2 and lost in the blood round for Iowa, Mike Macchiavello won it for NC State and Jacob Holschlag came in unseeded but placed 5th. 7 All Americans for Iowa, 5 for NC State, 5 for UNI.

  7. AJ Ferrari is now considered an undersized 197 pounder? In what universe?

  8. Listen man, lets not get crazy. I would expect Penn State to be favored to land most any transfer or recruit they actively seek, but the bolded part is just asinine. The only reason a wrestler in that weight range would go to Iowa is because NOBODY ELSE would take them? It's the second most successful college program going right now, has the biggest fanbase, and has world class coaches. Not being better than Penn State is not the same thing as being bad.

  9. Maybe an age-group ban. Wrestling can save a lot of kids who need it. Kid still has a lot of years ahead of him. Sounds like he could use some real lessons. Agree with pretty much all of jchapman’s assessment here. He’s what, 14-15? Lotta time to right the ship, but under close, very close watch

  10. I'm torn between wanting to throw the book at the kid and giving him a chance for redemption. If my own son got assaulted like that, I would be livid. If my own son threw that punch, I would be livid, but would want a chance for him to own the consequences and work through an improvement process that would lead to changed behavior, ultimately leading to an earned second chance.

  11. Eliminate riding time and add the pushout.
    3 points
  12. If these rules go through, then they should just eliminate riding time as well. It will make it much easier to follow and understand during matches. Sure, the few die-hards will get it, but image a causal fan or even the typical table worker at a dual will see it as complicated. Not sure the reward of one point at the end of a match will be worth the "effort" to keep track of the situation.

  14. With all this talk of NIL deals, I started wondering which wrestlers offered value in terms of social media presence. To that end, here are the Instagram numbers for a handful of prominent NCAA wrestlers: Starocci - 159k Carr - 113k Bartlett - 101k Fix - 89.7k Brooks - 35.9k Woods - 33.3k Lewis - 23.2k Ramos - 22.9k KOT - 22.7k Cassioppi - 22.5k Arujau - 22.4k Sasso - 21.1k

  18. Truax going to Iowa made sense, maybe not as much sense as Penn State, but it did make sense. Then when someone asked me "if you were Bernie, what would you do" and I gave a biased answer for a little fun. I'm not saying Penn State was a mistake or the wrong decision, I just said Iowa made sense. So I don't understand how this even went this far. You guys have problems

  21. Yeah the only issue I see with a three point td and 2 pt reversal is that and escape and a td is now worth 4 pts and a reversal is only 2. There are some situations where those look almost identical and it’s a tough call to make if it should be a reversal or not… now that’s a two point difference which is huge

  25. Yes, that is OPRF's main gym/field house and mat. BTS Chicago does many events there, as their CEO is an alum of OPRF, as well as having taught and coached at the school for years. He maintains close ties with the school. News report in Chicago media states that the boy who was punched suffered a deviated septum from that punch. SPAR kids are trained to wrestle hard, and my guess is the kid who threw the punch took umbrage with that.

  26. Brandvold should have been, but still...his return on Prep Wrestlers from Wisconsin was awful. There are numerous more examples. A few guys he should or could have gone after like Yan White or Ryan Allen who would have likely have a lot of success, but were late bloomers. NOW...well, Wisconsin has the talent, but....well, that's already been established.

  33. From other thread: They can get a three year lease on a good used Ford Focus for $665k/yr, just don't tell BnG he comes in an orange jump suit. The younger two are only $200k/yr each but come with one per get out of jail free card (one won't be enough). BTW: the team race is for 2nd.

  36. “It puts an emphasis on risk and we need more risk. If you look at the numbers statistically, takedowns have gone down, backpoints have gone down, tech falls have gone down." -- PROPOSAL X. Grant to Poeta, Ruth and IMAR four additional years of eligibility. Numbers back up! What do you foresee with the new rules? There will be a bunch of hairy cavemen. There are tons of lads starting their new beards today. Leg riding and bow and arrows just became the premium rides. Easy to twist somebody's upper torso to look like you're attempting near fall. Fellows great at neutral get a big advantage, and recruiting will change. More "Takedown Tournaments"? Nothing to stop the Gopher Choker? New weigh-in rules benefit the bigger 125s, as if they didn't get a big enough benefit after the first round of tournaments. Stalling. Why not refs with cattle prods? Or, refs allowed to be sarcastic? "Better move on the bottom, Nancy boy!" All in all, I like the proposals, but would've liked to have seen a new sarcasm rule.

  41. Actually I didn't ask you and I am pretty sure nobody did.... It was a statement of your own accord, choosing Brands and the Ferrari's over Cael, Starocci and Brooks. But hey, maybe now you can live a little bit more in reality.

  43. With the top rider having to attempt to turn the bottom wrestlers, wouldn’t it be more beneficial to just call stalling when the top wrestler isn’t actively pursuing a turn rather than have guys hook an ankle for 4 seconds, let go to avoid stall call, hook for 4 seconds, repeat…
