These are from 2 separate matches this year, and according to his wrestlestat he was also DQ’ed from the “Cougar Clash”2 points

Not much. I had typed in some language that was probably self-righteous (and mean) but I edited it out before I posted. What I said was just what I saw and what any neutral observer saw. Have we gotten to the point where we can't just speak plainly about what's plainly in front of our eyes? This wasn't an isolated mistake by an emotional, exhausted wrestler at the end of a grueling match. This was premeditated indefensible escalating conduct from the whistle. From someone with a documented history.2 points
-
The problem here is the ref and the coach -- not so much the kid, who is an established bad apple and by the eye test probably irredeemable. That the referee and his coach would see that happening in front of their eyes and not firmly put a stop to it before his opponent was injured is indefensible and, in my opinion, both of them should be reviewed by their superiors to decide if it's appropriate for them to continue in positions of authority. It's pitiful as far as the referee goes because he's on the mat with them, a foot away from the completely inappropriate illegal moves, and it's the first duty of his job to ensure the wrestlers' safety. It's pitiful as far as the coach goes because this is not an isolated incident and there's no way he can claim he didn't know that this kid is a problem. Why in the hell did Hahn have to be the one to put a stop to it? Well anyway, true to his good character, he stepped in, and, true to his good character, he didn't beat the crap out of the kid and the other coach as I'm sure he wanted to.2 points

I don't have an answer on the military question. But I do have a question on what you consider to be an assault rifle. If you want them removed, they have to be identified. mspart2 points

When wrestlers are in neutral, they are on both offense and defense. I give latitude. When a wrestler is on bottom, he is on defense and trying to get on top or back to neutral, I give latitude. When a wrestler is on top, they are on offense. They should act like it. The goal of wrestling to me, the ultimate victory, is to pin your opponent. This isn't to say you can't be stalling in all of the positions but this is my basic thought process. Stalling on top is ruining folkstyle wrestling for me. Which is crazy because I love watching a real hammer from the top position more than anything.2 points

I should apologize here and now for wrongfully predicting Indiana would be at the bottom of the Big10 this year but they have beaten both Maryland and Purdue. Maryland has beaten Pitt who has beaten Virginia Tech for the sake of comparison2 points

It seems like the Wyoming Cowboys have just spiraled into an abyss. They have taken some huge losses to teams like Air Force, North Dakota and South Dakota! What's going on in Laramie?1 point

Thanks for the thoughtful post. If anyone hasn't watched the video, watch it. Tanner is a very, tough wrestler, and he was looking around trying to figure out how the heck this guy was getting away with trying to maul him. It wasn't wrestling, it was a kid who clearly wasn't mentally stable.1 point

Putting silly forum squabbles aside, let's get back to the subject at hand... This situation is a problem. The coaches and refs need to be held accountable, as well as the wrestler.1 point

The thing that stood out to me (other than the elbow thing) was after the ref stopped the match and talked to both wrestlers presumably to say take it easy, as soon as he blew the whistle for the next restart Fernandes basically punches Cook in the head. I’m not sure that would’ve been worthy of throwing him out, but should’ve at least been a penalty point. Did he knock someone out? Wtf is a “KO bonus” supposed to mean?1 point

I think Blockhus, while still an underdog, has it within him to take down Murin this time. He's 0-3 against him, but each match has gotten closer.1 point

The NRA (I'm assuming by following the money) puts a bunch of data and references out there with the specific purpose of the pro-gun faction (incorrectly) inferring things from the data. Allow me to change things up a little and see what we can infer from this data: At a rate of about 50 million people dying each year since 1945, there have been about 3.8 billion people died in those subsequent 77 years. On August 6 and 9, 1945 approx 355,000 people died from atomic weapons. 355,000 ÷ 3,800,000,000 = .009% chance of dying by atomic weapon in 77 years. Yet, I very clearly remember getting under my desk in air raid drills in the early 60s to protect myself from an atomic bomb. Cool, huh? I will add that all of those deaths were in only two cities, 77 years ago. (A reference to your subsequent post about pockets of gun deaths.) Should we not have been concerned with atomic weapons, especially with them getting in the wrong hands? Did we need to cure cancer and solve poor nutrition before we could address atomic weapons? Should we have endless argued the semantics of atomic weapon, fission bomb, hydrogen bomb, etc such that nothing ever got done)?1 point

The stay itself will be fine because fans need a bed, a beer, nachos, and excellent wrestling. But you just have to figure out how to get there and how long it will take, then you have to figure out why you are paying dense city prices for a metro population of 1 million, then you have to figure out how long until you get bck home. Other than that it's fiiiiiiine. Same problem as Coralville world cup...1 point

Penn State is undefeated in duals and most likely will stay that way. They will win the BIG10 dual title and probably win BIG10s individually too. However, this team is not as strong as past teams -- deeper, yes, but I feel like the number of "locks" to win the title in March has declined compared to past years. In past years it wasn't a question whether guys like DT, Taylor, Nolf, Nickal or Zain would win...it was a matter of whether they'd win the finals by tech or major. This year's team doesn't have guys like that. It seems ridiculous to say that about guys who could be 3x, 4x or 5x NCAA champs but it's true. 125 - Steen is a scrapper but tiny for the weight. I don't think he qualifies for NCAAs as he would have to place top 8 at Big 10s to do so. The Suriano Curse continues to haunt PSU. 133 - RBY, believe it or not, is the biggest "lock" for PSU to get a champ in March. He has Fix figured out, so his biggest threat I think is actually Pat Glory due to unfamiliarity. Still, I think RBY wins his 3rd. 141 - Bartlett is overrated. He has great defense but he's got very little offense from neutral and from top. I think he makes R12 at best. He can stick with anyone in matches with his defense but against top guys (see Real Woods) he's not going to be able to score a TD and his opponents will. Also, he never scores bonus points. 149 - Van Ness is also overrated, although he is a freshman. Despite his pedigree he looks sluggish and unexplosive. He shoots straight on which makes it easy to defend. He's also not that great from bottom. I think he goes 2-2 at NCAAs. Maybe he's injured this year but I see him taking big steps next season. 157 - Haines I actually have the most upside on. He's a freshman but he seems to have upperclassman strength. Good neutral offense, can get out of bottom. Seems to have decent defense even against funky guys like Siebrecht. Already beat Will Lewan too. I have him placing mid-AA (4-6) with a minute chance at making the finals. 165 - Facundo actually has nice neutral offense but he's easily tied up by guys like Kennedy. Not much of a rider either. With the right bracket I can see him making low AA. I predict 7-8. Needs to gain some strength it seems. 174 - Starocci is still the favorite although Brands showed you can slow him down significantly with the right tactic. Guys like Labriola or Lewis could upset him. Don't forget about 22-1 Ed(mond) Ruth! 184 - Brooks I put at #2 most likely to repeat for Penn State. He did lose to Coleman and Hidlay will be a threat again, but he's been looking really solid. 197 - Dean took a few losses earlier this year but has stabilized. He rode Warner easily but gets in a lot of close matches. A bigger 197er like Elam or Laird could take him out in March. HWT - Kerk looks bigger and better this year. He's finally beating Cassioppi although he's shown he is prone to gassing. Parris gassed him out and other big HWTs may employ the same strategy. With smart match management I have him as a finalist. Overall my final predictions are as follows: 125 NA 133 champ 141 R12 149 2-2 157 5th place 165 7th place 174 runner-up 184 champ 197 3rd HWT runner-up PSU still wins the team title1 point

There are several moving parts here. I don't think there was much of a cheer for Taylor in Carver. Nothing remotely like Steveson. Which makes sense. 1. Closer, big dual vs ended, not competitive dual. 2. College star vs someone who just won a gold medal for the good old USA. The times that the fans tend to give those types of ovations are at Big Tens and NCAAs. Which makes sense since they aren't home crowds cheering for one team to trounce the other in a head to head dual, and since it's the end of the season, a better place for a summation. I remember Taylor getting a big ovation from the crowd a few weeks later at Big Tens after he beat Moore again there, including from Iowa fans, it was pretty cool. The video is here, they cut it off after a few seconds but it's already starting and building before the tape ends. (This is actually just an excuse to watch the incredible Taylor move at the 6:00 mark, which triggered some of the fullest oohs and aahs I've ever heard at a match.)1 point

A couple of things off the top of my head: 1) Everytime there is a conviction of a felony which involves a firearm, have a determination of how the perpetrator obtained the gun. In the normal world, this is called Root Cause Analysis. It's a process of determining how/why things happen. This would never happen because in most cases eventually there would be a line drawn to gun and ammo dealers and manufacturers. Their cash cow is protected by their wise investments in lobbyists and politicians in Washington. 2) Outlaw the sale of body armor to private citizens. No, I'm not kidding. Am I not correct in saying that the majority of mass shootings anymore are commited by some jackwagon with a weapon that shouldn't be in civilian hands in my opinion (but no thanks I'm not gonna get into the semantics BS of "assult rifle"), outfitted in his body armor. I would ask, Why does any private citizen need body armor, but that would be too close to the Why does any private citizen need... I'm assuming here that the body armor manufacturers don't control as many lawmakers as the gun and ammo manufacturers do.1 point

I found this Beauty and the Beast dual on YouTube. It sounded like Zeb from OhioCasts doing the commentary. During the 149 lb match, Zeb used the term "pinfall"! During a break in the action, he panned the camera over to the gymnastics and in true Ozzy Man fashion we saw "spinny flippy shit with a spreadie to the gawds!" Clarion wins the dual. Kent read. Yes, you saw that correctly. He's co-holding onto a hammer with one hand and had a drink or can or something in the other. My advice would have been to ditch both and run out the door and let the cops handle DePape. But he didn't even appear to be rattled at all, and he's the one that called 911. Weird, very weird. mspart1 point

It is 50x more data-driven and logical to raise concern over drowning in swimming pools and falling furniture than school shootings. School shootings are awful, yet rare. The news covers it because of the emotional engagement it drives and profits. Unfortunately, the coverage causes more harm than good, including unwarranted anxiety and copycat behavior. Who profits from school shooting news? The gun manufacturer, security firms, news firms, and politicians.1 point

This guy isn't dirty, he's downright criminal. That wasn't wrestling, that was 'assault with intent to do bodily harm.' He needs to be disciplined by removing him from eligibility for wrestling. Good time for him to start his MMA training. Whichever of his coaches were aware of what was happening in the match and did nothing to stop it, they need to be harshly disciplined.1 point

Guns are a problem everywhere. You are wasting your time if you lock your door in Newtown, CT. Columbine is in a nice, leafy suburb. Gun violence is different from all of the things you mentioned because they enable the barbarism. They enable terrorism. They are viciously, violently and lethally imposed on others. There is outrage over irresponsible driving. Compared drinking and driving now to 30-40 years ago.1 point
