Supposedly there are other matches this weekend, and there is a rumor that they will even continue to wrestle until some time in March. I find it hard to believe, but who am I to take away hope? Instead, I will provide the final update before tonight’s dual between Iowa and Penn State. Most Favored Wrestler Status Cometh the hour, cometh The Man. It is a near universally accepted fact (can a fact be universal if it is only near?) that Spencer Lee will take his pinfall streak to eight this evening. It is also anticipated that he will grab the mic and announce to the world that “it’s a pinfall, people”. Below are the weights ordered by total expected points for the expected winner. Only BAC had the intestinal fortitude to pick Jesse Ybarra to beat Gary Steen so Lee could bump up to 133 and do The Deed. Honorable mentions go to Aaron Brooks and Carter Starocci who were also unanimous selections, but expected to score fewer bonus points. UPSET ALERT You heard it here first. Gary Steen has been playing the long con. And he has you all fooled. Like lambs to the slaughter. Every Answer is Wrong But we are right on average. The expected final score is Iowa 14 – PSU 21. Last year the expected final score (19 - 13) was the actual final score, but no one picked that actual score. The same is true again this year. If however, the final is 14-21 then BerniePragle and Mr. PeanutButter will have some braggin’ to do, both having predicted 15-21. Get That Fence Post Out of Your... We got a bunch of fence sitters on this board. Some people just want to have their cake and eat it too. Those guys are the worst. Make up your minds already. The are six namby pamby, wishy washy undecides who want to change their choice if Haines stays red tonight. No One Expects The Spanish Inquisition… And no one expects the Hawkeyes to win the majority of matches. Even the most diehard among us have it five matches to five with an Iowa dual victory dependent on bonus point wins. Well really just one bonus point win, but who’s counting (me, I’m counting, of course I am)? Note: the original title of this section was Sister Kissing. The Partisans We all come to Intermat's message board for the non-partisan, well-reasoned, level-headed discussions, but every now and then it is good to take a peek at the wild one-sided views of the team specific boards. As mentioned previously, the Hawkeye Report crowd does not hold out great hope for the black singlets tonight. They are still predicting a PSU win by the score of 16 - 19. Meanwhile, the combined PSU faithful have the score 23 - 13. Irrational exuberance? Likely, but I am even more extreme in my prediction, so what the hell do I know? I love Gomez and Andonian as well. Since you mentioned them, wonder if you have seen any of Luke Nichter of Drexel. Check out the opening move in this one5 points

After watching this dual I am fully convinced that college wrestling would be a better, more exciting product without the riding time point. Outside of Spencer and Aaron Brooks guys just sat on the ankle on top and did not look for turns. Just hang on and try to get the riding time point.4 points

As much as I love symmetry, I love weird little corners of the rulebook more. Way more. So here is what I now hope happens. The dual opens at 125 with Spencer Lee taking on Gary Steen. Just as the whistle blows Lee reaches up to adjust his own head gear. At that moment Steen fires the one and only bullet he knows he will get the entire match. Steen isn't strong enough to take down Lee, but after a bit of scrambling Steen finds himself in the rear standing position and he is hanging on for dear life. Their feet get tangled a bit and Lee winds up putting his hand down for a split second. The ref instantly calls the two for Steen. This only serves to anger Lee so he immediately spins on Steen and within seconds he has secured the pinfall and the match is over. Steam is pouring out of Lee's ears as he head butts every single Iowa fan that has made the trip to State College. Every single one of them is out cold with a strange contented smile on their faces. Over the course of the next four matches there are numerous reffing controversies. Cael Sanderson throws multiple chairs and costs PSU two team points. Terry Brands wrestles the shoes off the official and starts twisting them in his face earning two team point deductions, one for each shoe. The balance of the match goes back and forth. The highlight for PSU is when Max Dean secures the bow and arrow on Jacob Warner, pauses to give a knowing nod to the crowd, and then proceeds to empty every arrow in the quiver on poor Warner before securing a pinfall of his own. PSU has a three point lead at this stage, but Big Time Tony Cassioppi secures a last second takedown to seal the win over Greg Kerkvliet, and the dual victory over PSU on tie-breakers. But for some odd reason there is a delay in declaring the winner of the dual. Officials are huddled at the scoring table. There is a call for more calculators and more batteries. And finally, after an excruciating amount of time, it is announced that PSU has won the dual on the seventh tie-breaking criteria. That's right. In defeat Gary Steen won the dual for PSU in the very first second, while losing the battle he has won the war. The rest of the two plus hours was just delayed gratification. When two teams finish in a tie in a dual meet or a team-advancement tournament, the following criteria shall be applied to determine a winner: a. Greater number of victories. Note: Forfeits, defaults and disqualifications count toward total number of victories. b. Combined total number of falls, forfeits, defaults and disqualifications. c. Total match points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls. d. Total near fall points scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls. (Example: N-2 + N-2 + N-4 = Total of 8 near fall points scored for one team.) e. Total number of takedowns scored only from decisions, major decisions and technical falls. (Example: T-2 + T-2 + T-2 = Total of 3 takedowns scored for one team.) f. Least number of unsportsmanlike conduct calls. g. First takedown scored in the dual meet.4 points

Just out of curiosity, at what level does one have to compete to be more than a "fan" to you? Is D2 high enough or do we have to make a Senior World team before we can debate with the great LJB? I don't think you realize how arrogant you're coming off in this thread, almost as if you're gatekeeping the sport. "Me and mine have had a certain experience with the sport, so every person has to have the same experience or else they have no idea what they are talking about." It's very cool that your son is having success at the highest level, but that doesn't make you some oracle of the sport. You've already done a great job of proving that in this thread.4 points

great night of NCAA wrestling on tv with this one and then the 2 B1G duals. Per Virginia Tech site, here are the probable match-ups: 125 – Cooper Flynn, r-Fr vs Colton Camacho, r-Jr 133 – No. 5 Sam Latona, r-Jr vs No. 7 Micky Phillippi, r-Sr 141 – No. 12 Tom Crook, Fr vs No. 3 Cole Matthews, Jr 149 – No. 9 Caleb Henson, Fr vs No. 29 Tyler Badgett, r-So 157 – No. 5 Bryce Andonian, Sr vs No. 33 Dazjon Casto, Sr 165 – No. 25 Connor Brady, r-So vs No. 23 Holden Heller, r-Sr 174 – No. 3 Mekhi Lewis, r-Sr vs Luca Augustine, r-Fr 184 – No. 7 Hunter Bolen, r-Sr vs No. 19 Reece Heller, r-Jr 197 – No. 22 Andy Smith, r-So OR TJ Stewart, Fr vs No. 2 Nino Bonaccorsi, r-Sr 285 – No. 23 Hunter Catka, r-So vs No. 5 Dayton Pitzer, Fr or Jake Slinger, Sr Rooting for Tech, but also hope to see Pitzer and Bonaccorsi. I guess with Pitzer being a freshman there is still question of whether they turn him loose for rest of the season, but why is Nino in the OR category? Banged up?3 points

I'd HATE to ref a match like this. In my BRIEF time as a HS ref, I remember just a few hundred people in a "big" rivalry duel and I dreaded calling shit. PSU fans(or Iowa at CHA) are just ruthless! I don't think the home crowd EVER thinks the other guy is in a "potentially dangerous" situation or NOT stalling!3 points

Yea, heard some of the boos. Figured they’d flip once done. Frankly, that sucks that they couldn’t recognize a great wrestler and show their appreciation. Boo Penn State fans.3 points

For me upsets could only be: Steen over Lee Teske over Bravo Young Brands over Starocci Assad over Brooks All other matches are within reasonable level of competition that even if it's not a tossup it's expected to be close.3 points

125: Lee (just because I have never seen anything like that before) or Medley (really pulling for him to go on a vision quest and end up on the podium..tall order i know) 133: Byrd 141: alirez 149: Van Ness (right now just want to see how he's developed and continues to grow) 157: Andonian 165: toss up between Carr/Hamiti 174: Ruth (It's like watching paint dry sometimes, but he just keeps winning and I keep watching...) 184: Keckeisen 197: Beard 285: Parris3 points

Yes. Three titles and on a seven pin streak toward his fourth title in dominating fashion? Yes, yes I would.3 points

This is why I really enjoyed rooting for Hamiti last year as a true freshman who had been in high school the year prior. Also major props to Spencer Moore at UNC last year who started at 125 at 17 years old after skipping a year of high school during covid. He wrestled Liam Cronin at one point who was old enough to be his babysitter3 points

There should be an asterisk next to the win. Basically too old to be competing against 17 and 18 year olds. Should be noted.2 points

Tonight vs. VMI on the BU Knights Sports Network @ 7pm in Louisville. Participated at the NCWA National Duals earlier this month. Placing 1st for their division, winning 52 of 55 non-forfeit matches. Has a Southern Conference regular season dual schedule. Will be at the Great Lakes Conference tournament February 25th and the NCWA Championships March 9th. Both teams participated at the Soldier Salute last month in Iowa. VMI placed 10th with 37.5 points while Bellarmine was 11th with 21.5 points. VMI won last year's dual 29-10.2 points

As a typically-optimistic gopher fan I am feeling oddly pessimistic about this one. Also don’t think we see Nagao. But would be very happy if we did. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk2 points

Don't think we will see Carr this weekend, betting the good doctor has more important commitments. Hopefully can keep 157 to a regular decision and then figure out a way to pull out the HWT match.2 points

I'm all about teaching a person how to fish, so I'll ask you about your methodology. Are you brute-forcing this endeavor aka visiting each page and selecting text for each athelete? If so could I offer an alternative: why don't you just build a webscraper using Python? Python is free You can learn to write basic code pretty quickly, like a matter of minutes to hours. If you don't want to do that, you can copypasta most queries if you want to speed up the process. You can brag to people that you know how to code and show off your neat little table! Take that you pleebs! You can get a better idea watching this video. My research comp team shows this to their interns and new grad analysts as part of their unofficial onboarding if the person doesn't know how to scrape yet.2 points

@ionel, I've always liked the Gopher posters. Additionally, if Johnson, Gibbons, Sparks or Flores can't get to Minneapolis for the dual, I wouldn't mind hearing Mack Reiter and his partner call it. They're neutral and low-key very funny. Does this mean I'm going soft on Minnesota? No way. The Land of 10,000 Mosquito Bites. It's the movie Fargo but with trees. As you said, it could very well come down to heavyweight, and that's one of many close matches. Matt Wroblewski has a head-to-head win when they were both at 197, but Garrett Joles is a big musclehead and may now outweigh Wroblewski, who had a earlier start at putting on weight. These guys never get to shoot doubles or knee-down singles because there are so many fatties in conference. They are free here to actually shoot, and they both can do it. I'm especially looking forward to Danny Pucino versus Jake Bergeland, Carr versus Brayton Lee, Little Braunagel versus Sparks and Edmond Ruth versus O'Reilly. I want to see how Dylan Connell measures up against Isaiah Salazar. The Gopher's a big dude and tough wrestler, but Connell's added some muscle. There should be some very good matches! As a selfish ILLINI fan, I hope the dual starts at either 125, 157 or 184. I think those are the Minny guys who are pulling the most weight. Actually, the whole team looks pretty huge except for Joles and McKee, which makes me wonder, how did Pat McKee ever miss weight? Two rolls of half-dollars in his singlet?2 points

Mike and I share different opinions and beliefs on the non-wrestling forums. But at the end of the day, we are all part of the same wrestling community. We support each other and pay it forward to the next generation of wrestlers. For example, Eric Akin sold me his wrestling mats at a significant discount for my son. I gave those mats to a new youth wrestler last year. I mentioned that my daughter started wrestling this year to Mike, and Mike sent wrestling swag and provided feedback on her wrestling. My daughter laughed when I told her I bicker with a World Champ's father, and he had a surprise for her. My daughter quickly fell in love with the sport, and DP is easily her favorite wrestler. At worlds, I was impressed with Dom's ability to finish shots and her no-panic defense discipline in winning close matches. From watching interviews/clips... Dom seems happy, confident, and well-supported. Kudos to Mike and her. How very different this is from another father/son combo that used to be on this forum. It's great to have MP on the forum, his support for women's wrestling, and his pride in his daughter's accomplishments. Good job, Mike, and let's go, DP!2 points

This isn't really a new phenomenon. Greg Ruth was a double champ for Oklahoma back in 1965 and 1966. There must be some interesting back story to his career. He graduate high school in 1958 having never won PA state. He was 2nd at 145 in 1957. In 1958 and 159 he attending Lehigh and finished 4th at EIWAs at 157lbs in 1959. Then he took 5 years off and transferred to Oklahoma where he won a title at 167lbs in 1965 before dropping to 160lbs and winning a second title in 1966. He had to be at least 26 when he won the second title. Of course back then 1st year students weren't allowed to compete so maybe he wasn't beating 17 and 18 year olds in 1966.2 points

Appalachian State hosts Duke on Tuesday 1/24 and will LOCK on Tuesday at noon EST. Unclear at this time which (if any) Appalachian State starters will be attending their APP State Open, but if they have only the one dual for the week, look to: 125, Caleb Smith, 149 Jon Jon Millner, 157 Tommy Askey, 165 Will Formato, 174 Will Miller, & 197 Carson Floyd Duke Heavyweight Niesenbaum will ahve Owen Trephan on Friday 1/27 so may be a pass on this week's Fantasy lineup1 point
